Abstract:Catalytic transformation of glycerol to value-added products has attracted the attention of scientists all over the world. Among various transformations, selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen to dihydroxyacetone, glyceric acid, glyceraldehydes, and tartronic acid is challenging both from the viewpoint of academic research and industrial application. Herein, we review the recent progresses in the selective oxidation of glycerol under base-free conditions. Those catalysts widely reported for the selective oxidation of the terminal hydroxyl and secondary hydroxyl groups in glycerol, such as monometallic Au, Pt, and Pd NPs, and bimetallic Au-Pt, Au-Pd, Pt-Bi, Pt-Sb, and Pt-Cu, were compared and discussed in detail. The reaction mechanism over Pt-based catalysts, possible catalyst deactivation, and the corresponding improvements are presented. Further, the recent progresses in the continuous oxidation of glycerol in fixed bed reactors and its excellent selectivity in the formation of dihydroxyacetone are highlighted.

Abstract:Glycerol is considered as a significant green platform chemical, and many efforts have been devoted to design and prepare the efficient catalysts to convert glycerol to glyceric acid; however, the active site as well as reaction mechanism of glycerol oxidation remains rather ambiguous in terms of different oxygen sources. Herein, we studied the oxidation reaction of glycerol to glyceric acid over the catalytic systems of Au/CeO2− x and Pt/CeO2− x on periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculation in detail. By the optimization of catalyst structure models and comparison of substrate adsorption configurations, the interfacial sites of supported catalysts (Au/CeO2− x and Pt/CeO2− x ) are regarded as the intrinsic active sites. Potential energy curve confirms that the reaction mechanism of glycerol oxidation includes two main pathways: OH− and O2 as oxygen sources in base and base-free environment, respectively. Mechanism studies indicate that Au/CeO2− x interface facilitates the dehydrogenation of C−H/O−H bond, which further promotes the formation of glyceraldehyde. Moreover, Pt/CeO2− x is favorable for the transfer of intramolecular H, resulting in excellent catalytic performance for the oxidation of glyceraldehyde to glyceric acid. The O2 − was involved in oxidative dehydrogenation as active oxygen in base-free condition, and Pt/CeO2− x was more favorable for base-free glycerol oxidation. This work offers detailed insights into interfacial synergy effects of supported catalytic systems and the reaction mechanism of glycerol oxidation, which will pave the way for the selection of solvent conditions toward selective oxidation reaction.

Abstract:A systematic study of Au‐promoted and unpromoted Pt/MgO/SBA‐15 catalyst is developed to separate the promoter effect from electron transfer effect between Au and Pt. Multi‐characterizations revealed that Au and Pt metals in these bimetallic catalysts mainly exist in the form of alloy, and the main role of Au is to reduce the size of AuPt alloy nanoparticles, thus enhancing the adsorption and activation of intermediate products. Through the optimization of various factors (including MgO content, Au/Pt molar ratio, reaction temperature and time), the Au1Pt2/MgO/SBA‐15 (0.05) catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and glyceric acid selectivity for the selective oxidation of glycerol. Density functional theory calculation confirmed that the synergistic effect between Pt and Au active sites could facilitate the oxidation of primary hydroxyl group by promoting the activation of C‐H bond and the oxidation of aldehyde group. Abstract:Selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen in base-free aqueous solutions has become a hot topic, as the rapidly increasing production of biodiesel is creating a surplus of glycerol. In this work, an N-doped-carbon-supported core-shell structured Sb@PtSb2 hybrid catalyst was prepared via a facile synthesis route, in which a mixture of glucose, melamine, and SbCl3 (Sb-NC) was pyrolyzed, then impregnated with Pt by immersion in an aqueous solution of H2PtCl6, and further treated in hydrogen flow. Characterization of the catalyst products indicated that introducing SbCl3 can increase the surface area of the binary glucose + melamine pyrolyzed support (NC), and Sb@PtSb2 hybrids could be formed on the surface of an Sb-NC support during hydrogen treatment at 700 degrees C. It was found that the Sb@PtSb2/NC catalyst was more active for the selective oxidation of glycerol in a base-free aqueous solution than Sb-free NC-supported Pt (Pt/NC). Further characterization also indicated that the promising performance of Sb@PtSb2/NC might be attributed to its enhanced oxygen activation. Abstract:A series of Ag/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method. The catalytic performance for selective oxidation of 1,2-propylene glycol to methyl glyoxal was investigated. Under optimum reaction conditions [V(N-2) : V(O-2)=300 : 19, n(O-2)/n(alcohol)= 1.2, LHSV=3.2 g/(g(.)h) and temperature=673 K], the conversion of 1,2-propylene glycol got to 95.7%, and the selectivity to methyl glyoxal was 55.3%, being higher than that over conventional electrolytic silver catalyst. The UV-vis DRS and XPS results indicated that the existence of large amount of Ag+ and Ag-n(delta+) in Ag/ZrO2 catalysts contributes to the enhancement of catalytic activity.

Abstract:Glycerol is a significant by-product of biodiesel production and a functional molecule with three hydroxyl groups. Glycerol can be transformed through different catalytic processes, among which the selective oxidation of glycerol over heterogeneous catalyst is appealing due to its environmental friendliness and the facile production of various value-added products from glycerol. Owing to the structural sensitivity of the reaction, the activity and products selectivity not only depend on the active metal sites, but also is affected by many other factors, such as the pH of the reaction system, the structure and characters of metal and support. This article provides a comprehensive review of recent developments on glycerol selective oxidation over supported noble metal catalysts. Critical attention is paid to the influence of metal-support and metal-metal interactions on the electronic and geometrical structure of catalysts and the consequent catalytic performances, which is conducive to better understanding of the reaction mechanism and more rational design of catalyst to enhance the catalytic activity and selectivity of desired products, such as 1,3-dihydroxyacetone.

Abstract:A series of Pt/C catalysts with different Pt particle size ranged from 1.2 to 26.5nm were prepared and used for the oxidation of glycerol in a base-free aqueous solution. The morphologies and the dispersion of Pt were characterized by CO adsorption, TEM and XRD. It was found that the dispersion of Pt depends strongly on the surface properties of the support, the amount of reducing agent and preparation temperature. Though bigger sized Pt particles (>10nm) were less active, smaller sized ones (<6nm) exhibited higher glycerol conversion, stable selectivity and good recycled activity.

The strong interaction between Au and CeMnO3 perovskite facilitates the electron transfer from the B-site metal (Mn) in the CeMnO3 perovskite to Au and stabilizes Au nanoparticles, which results in the enhanced catalytic activity and stability for glycerol oxidation. Valence band photoemission spectral analysis reveals that the uplifted d-band center of Au/CeMnO3 promotes the adsorption of the glyceraldehyde intermediate on the catalyst surface, which benefits further oxidation of glyceraldehyde into glyceric acid. The flexibility of the perovskite support provides a promising strategy for the rational design of high-performance glycerol oxidation catalysts.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol represents a most promising synthetic route for various specialty products in plastics, pharmaceuticals and textile industries. How to enhance chemoselectivity of 1,3-propanediol over other co-products still remains a grand challenge in this area in the past two decades. While particle size, metal-support and surface acidity have been extensively investigated for catalyst development in literature, fundamental studies on spatial and electronic configuration of "metal-solid acid" interfacial catalysts for tunable activity and selectivity are yet to be established in this field. In this context, interfacial steric hindrance and electronic transfer effect is critical for tunable activity and selectivity for metal catalysts. Therefore, in this review article, we have conducted a comprehensive and critical discussion on how steric hindrance and electronic coupling at metal-acid interfaces affect catalytic activation of internal -OH group in glycerol molecule. Selected highlights on the mechanistic investigation for ex-situ and in-situ formed Brønsted acidity over Pt-WO x and Ir-ReO x catalysts, have been discussed with experimental and computational details. The outcome of this review will provide important insights on controllable manipulation of spatial and electronic structures for selective hydrogenation reactions with broader industrial applications.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of glycerol is a hot topic. Increased biodiesel production has led to glycerol oxidation over Au- and Pt-based catalysts being widely studied. However, Pt catalysts suffer from deactivation because of weak metal-support interactions. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs)-pillared nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) was prepared by direct pyrolysis of melamine on MWCNTs, and the synthesized NG-MWCNT composite was used as the support for Pt. Characterization results showed that the surface area (173 m2/g) and pore volume of the NG-MWCNT composite were greater than those of bare MWCNTs and the separated melamine pyrolysis product (CNx). Pt (1.4 ± 0.4 nm) dispersion on the NG-MWCNTs was favorable and the Pt/NG-MWCNT catalyst was highly active and selective in the oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid (GLYA) in base-free aqueous solution. For example, the conversion of glycerol reached 64.4% with a GLYA selectivity of 81.0%, whereas the conversions of glycerol over Pt/MWCNTs and Pt/CNx were 29.0% and 31.6%, respectively. The unique catalytic activity of the Pt/NG-MWCNTs is attributed to well-dispersed Pt clusters on the NG-MWCNTs and the electron-donating effect of the nitrogen dopant in the NG-MWCNTs.
Tailoring Facets of α-Mn 2 O 3 Microcrystalline Catalysts for Enhanced Selective Oxidation of Glycerol to Glycolic Acid

Abstract:Understanding and tuning the crystal-facet-dependent catalytic properties of catalysts are of great importance for the selective oxidation of polyols. Herein, a series of α-Mn2O3 catalysts with various morphologies (octahedron, truncated octahedron, and cube) are successfully synthesized for the enhanced selective oxidation of glycerol to glycolic acid. Our results show that the different catalytic performances of Mn2O3 catalysts with various morphologies originated from the chemical nature of the (001) and (111) facets. Multicharacterizations and density functional theory calculations revealed that the surface oxygen vacancies on the (001) facets are well correlated with the catalytic activity, and the C–H bond in oxygen-containing intermediates could be easily activated on the surface oxygen vacancies of the (001) facets, thus improving the catalytic activity. Moreover, the main role of (111) facets is to prevent the over-oxidation of glycolic acid products, leading to the improvement of glycolic acid selectivity. Consequently, the Mn2O3-truncated octahedron catalyst with both (001) and (111) facets shows high catalytic activity (0.87 mmol/(h m2)) and glycolic acid selectivity (52.6%) simultaneously. Abstract:The attractive challenge in green chemistry is exploring novel heterogeneous catalyst system for catalyst-controlled product selectivity for oxidation of olefins. Hence, we proposed efficient and green catalytic methods for the selective synthesis of aldehydes and ketones, the selectivity of the reaction is exclusively dependent on the metals from the catalyst. A series of novel glycosyl pyridyl triazole-platinum (GPT-Pt) complex have been successfully synthesized and fully characterized for the first time. The GPT-Pt catalysts have been applied in the selective oxidative cleavage of alkenes to yield the corresponding aldehydes in the presence of H2O2 as an oxidant in water. With GPT-Pd as the catalyst, the oxidation reaction give the ketones as the main products. Moreover, the catalysts were recovered and reused six times without significant yield decrease. Novel glycosyl pyridyl triazole-platinum (GPT-Pt) complex have been successfully synthesized.The selective synthesis of aldehydes or ketones is exclusively dependent on the metals from the catalyst. Moreover, the catalysts can be separated and reused at least six times with superior activity.

Abstract:Improving the selectivity in the oxidative coupling of methane to ethane/ethylene poses a significant challenge for commercialization. The required improvements are hampered by the uncertainties associated with the reaction mechanism due to its complexity. Herein, we report about 90% selectivity to the target products at 11% methane conversion over Gd2O3-based catalysts at 700°C using N2O as the oxidant. Sophisticated kinetic studies have suggested the nature of adsorbed oxygen species and their binding strength as key parameters for undesired methane oxidation to carbon oxides. These descriptors can be controlled by a metal oxide promoter for Gd2O3.

Abstract:A series of carbon supported bimetallic Pt―Cu catalysts were prepared and used for glycerol oxidation with oxygen in a base-free aqueous solution. It was found that bimetallic Pt―Cu/C was more active than monometallic Pt/C towards selective oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid. The selectivity of free glyceric acid reached 70.8% at an 86.2% conversion of glycerol over 5Pt―Cu/C. Highly dispersed bimetallic Pt―Cu nanoparticles with small particle size in dominant alloyed phase of PtCu3 were confirmed by XRD and TEM in the bimetallic Pt―Cu/C catalyst, which is proposed to contribute to the improved performance.

Abstract:In this work, different shaped WO3 (rod-like, lamellar and cuboid) supported Pt catalysts were prepared in a facile routine and tested in the selective oxidation of glycerol in base-free aqueous solution. Characterizations indicated that rod-like WO3 supported Pt catalyst (Pt/R-WO3) possesses higher surface area because of the formation of vertical pore channels and highly exposed plane (100), the deposited Pt atoms combined strongly with the terminal -W=O in rod-like WO3. These properties promoted the adsorption, storage and surface diffusion of oxygen over Pt/R-WO3 which exhibited the excellent activity for the selective oxidation of glycerol. And the higher amount of acid sites on the surface of Pt/R-WO3 enhanced the selectivity of glyceric acid. The calculated turnover frequency of each Pt atom in Pt/R-WO3 reached 946 h(-1) at 60 ?C.

Abstract:The conversion of glycerol to value-added products has received considerable attention recently because the booming biodiesel industry produces a large amount of glycerol as a byproduct.Among various means,electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol is appealing owing to its environmental friendliness and high efficiency.However,electrooxidation of glycerol is very complex,in-volving multiple electron and proton transfer processes with many reaction pathways.How to rationally design catalysts with high selectivity toward targeted products is an overarching challenge,and of both fundamental and practical significance.In this minire-view we aim to provide an overview of recent advancements in electrooxidation of glycerol focusing mainly on Pt-and Pd-based catalysts.We start with summarizing fundamental understandings)f factors dictating catalytic activity and selectivity garnered from in-situ and online spectrometric experimental studies as well as from theoretical works.We then use selective examples to demon-strate how these factors are manifested in the development of highly efficient glycerol electrooxidation catalysts.Finally,we sum-marize the key issues to be addressed in future studies.

Abstract:A series of N-doped carbon film coated active carbon (NxC-XC-72) was prepared via direct pyrolysis of mixed XC-72 (a commercial activated carbon), polyvinyl pyrrolidone and urea. Characterizations indicated that the specific area of synthesized N2.5C-XC-72 reached 281m2/g and uniform meso pore channels (sized in 4.0nm) formed. It was found that NxC-XC-72 was an excellent support for the evenly dispersion of Pt compared with raw XC-72. Pt/NxC-XC-72 was active and stable for the selective oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid in a base-free aqueous solution. The calculated turnover frequency on the basis of surface Pt increased from 573 (in Pt/XC-72) to 706h−1 (in Pt/N2.5C-XC-72) at 60°C.

Abstract:The silver based catalysts with 4A molecular sieve as carrier modified by addition of auxiliary catalysts were prepared by ion-exchange method.The effects of auxiliary catalysts,such as P,Zn,K,Cu,Ba and Zr,and reaction conditions on the catalytic performance for selective oxidation of 1,2-propylene glycol to methylglyoxal were studied.Results showed that Ag-P/4A molecular sieve has good catalytic performance.At 300 ℃,the space velocity being 6 000 h-1,with the substance ratio of oxygen to 1,2-propylene glycol being 1.7∶1.0,and the mass fraction of 1,2-propylene glycol being 70%,the conversion of 1,2-propylene glycol was 90.4% and the selectivity of methylglyoxal was 44.6% on the Ag-P catalyst.
