Abstract:We fabricate fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in microfibers (MFs) using focused ion beam milling technique. By periodically etching 100 nm-depth grooves on the surface of silica MFs with diameters less than 2 μm, evident grating features with transmission dip up to 15 dB are obtained. Because of the high-index contrast of the gratings structure, the length of the microfiber Bragg grating (MFBG) can be reduced to 500 μm level. Using a 518 μm-length 1.8 μm-diameter MFBG, we also demonstrate sensitivity up to 660 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) for refractive index (RI) sensing. The highly compact MFBGs demonstrated here may serve as low-dimensional building blocks for miniaturized photonic components and devices.

Abstract:We report a novel micro-fiber Bragg grating (mu FBG) sensor that takes advantage of the degeneracy of stop-band and rapid emergence of spectral modes when an effective phase shift occurs. The phase shift can be enabled by a range of perturbations in a central segment of the grating, including monolayer immobilization of bio-molecules or change in refractive index in the surrounding, thereby constituting the possibility of a highly sensitive sensor with the merit of scalable performance. The use of mu FBG ensures strong evanescent field coupling to the surrounding in order to maximize signal transduction. Simulation results indicate very favorable sensor signal characteristics such as large wavelength shift and sharp reflection dips. A general relation between the peak position within the stop-band and the amount of effective phase shift is also provided, and may generally serve as helpful guideline for FBG sensor design. A typical mu FBG sensor device may detect surface protein/DNA adsorption with limit-of-detection (LOD) as low as 3.3 pg.mm(-2) for surface mass density and 51.8 fg for total mass. Abstract:We report a miniaturized fiber probe inline reflective interferometer (FPIRI) sensor, with a several mu m-micro-notch cavity fabricated for highly sensitive refractive index measurement. Its sensitivity in liquid is similar to 100 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) near the wavelength of 1550 nm with a high extinction ratio. This probe sensor is very compact, stable, and cheap, offering great potentials for detecting inside sub-wavelength particles or biocells.

Abstract:By using a simple and low-cost nanoimprinting technique, polymer micro/nanofiber Bragg gratings (MNFBGs) are fabricated with a ~551-nm grating period and a grating depth >;10 dB around 1.5-μm wavelength. As-fabricated MNFBGs also show high compactness to optical fiber systems and large dynamic range. Using a 2.5-μm-wide and 1.4-μm-thick MNFBG, we demonstrate strain sensing with a high sensitivity of -2.5 pm/με.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a compact microfiber Bragg grating (MFBG) force sensor that offers greater sensitivity under load. The FBG is fabricated by focused ion beam (FIB) milling a microfiber tapered from nonphotosensitive standard single-mode fiber. It is only ~58μm in length. The force sensitivity of the MFBG is as high as ~4133nm/N around the resonant wavelength of 1550nm, which is three orders of magnitude larger than that recorded in FBGs inscribed in untapered fibers.

Abstract:Ultra-short phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) composed of cascaded microchannels is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The cascaded microchannels are fabricated based on femtosecond (fs) laser micromachining technology in the microprobe and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is written in the core of single-mode fiber (SMF) near the microprobe. Ultra-short PS-FBG is sensitive to both refractive index (RI) and temperature, while FBG is only sensitive to temperature, so FBG can be used to compensate temperature crosstalk. The length of the microprobe is less than 150 μm and its diameter is about 40 μm, and the total length of the ultra-short PS-FBG is less than 95 μm, which is about one fiftieth of the traditional FBG. Experimental results show that the RI sensitivity of the PS-FBG is 463.7953 nm/RIU in the range of 1.3323 ∼ 1.3797, the temperature sensitivity is about −28.9 pm/°C from 40 °C to 80 °C, and the temperature crosstalk can be well suppressed based on the transfer matrix method.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an all-silica first-order fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for high temperature sensing by focused ion beam (FIB) machining in a fiber probe tapered to a point. This 61-period FBG is compact (~ 36.6 μm long and ~ 6.5 μm in diameter) with 200-nm-deep shallow grooves. We have tested the sensor from room temperature to around 500 °C and it shows a temperature sensitivity of nearly 20 pm/°C near the resonant wavelength of 1550 nm.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a microfiber Bragg grating force sensor with ultra-high sensitivity. The fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is inscribed in a microfiber tapered from standard non-photosensitive single-mode fiber by focused ion beam machining method, and has a compact size (∼112 μm in length). Small diameter increases the force sensitivity of such grating when acting as a force-sensing element under tensile loads. We have demonstrated force sensitivity as high as ∼3146 nm/N around the resonant wavelength of 1538 nm, which is three orders of magnitude larger than FBGs in untapered fibers.

Abstract:Gradient-index (GRIN) fiber probe is an all-fiber ultra-small optical lens, which has broad application prospects in endoscopic image detection in small spatial tissues such as cardiovascular. However, its development lacks a systematic theoretical system. This paper discusses the key issues of the design, fabrication and performance testing methods of the probe. Based on the characteristics parameters of GRIN fiber probe, comparative analysis is conducted between the analytical method and numerical simulation methods. An integrated high precision optical fiber welding and cutting device is presented for the fabrication of ultra-small GRIN optical fiber probe. In addition, the method and device for detecting the focusing performance of ultrasmall GRIN fiber probe are analyzed. As a result, a system method for design, fabrication and performance testing is provided for the research of GRIN fiber probes.

Abstract:We report an ultrasmall microfiber-probe-based reflective interferometer for highly sensitive liquid refractive index measurement. It has a 3.5 microm micronotch cavity fabricated by focused ion beam micromachining. A sensitivity of 110 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) in liquid is achieved with over 20 dB extinction ratio. Theoretical analysis shows this kind of device is a hybrid of Fabry-Perot and modal interferometers. In comparison with normal fiber interferometers, this probe sensor is very compact, stable, and cheap, offering great potentials for detecting inside sub-wavelength bubbles, droplets, or biocells.

Abstract:Deeply-tapered long-period fiber gratings (DT-LPFGs) have been demonstrated, which are fabricated by using the cylindrical-lens-assisted CO2 laser technique. Attributed to the effects of both the refractive-index perturbation and geometrical perturbation in the deeply-tapered structure, the proposed DT-LPFG is of the high coupling-efficiency and thus an ultrashort yet strong LPFG can be achieved. As a typical example, a LPFG with a length of only ∼1 mm and loss-dip of ∼ 33 dB in spectrum has been successfully obtained, which, based on our knowledge, is the shortest one among all those of the strong LPFGs reported to date. The fabricated DT-LPFG is also of the low polarization-dependence, which considerably benefits the practical application of grating itself. As an application of the proposed DT-LPFG, a transverse load sensor with sensitivity up to 1246.594 nm/(N/mm) has been successfully demonstrated, which represents the best result among all those of the fiber-based transverse load sensors.

Abstract:Fabry-Perot cavity (FPC) based on Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) is an excellent candidate for fiber sensing and high-precision measurement. The advancement of the femtosecond laser micromachining technique provides more choices for the fabrication of FBGs-based FPCs. In this paper, we fabricate miniature FBGs-based FPCs, using the femtosecond laser line-by-line scanning writing technique for the first time. By this method, the FBGs can be limited to a specific area in the fiber core region. The grating length, position, and the distance between two successive FBGs can be conveniently controlled to achieve the desired transmission spectrum. For future applications in sensing, the temperature and strain responses of the fabricated FBGs-based FPCs were studied experimentally. This work provides a meaningful guidance for the fabrication and application of miniature FPCs based on FBGs.

Abstract:In this letter, we reported long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) fabricated by femtosecond laser pulses direct writing in grapefruit microstructured fiber. The mode field distribution and dispersion property of this fiber was analyzed by finite- element method. Two LPFGs were fabricated with different periods of 230 and 250 mu m, the resonant dips appeared at the wavelengths of 1325.8 and 1449.4 nm, respectively. In addition, sensing characteristics of the LPFG with the period of 250 mu m were investigated in theory and experiment. The experimental results show that the strain and temperature sensitivities are 1.88 pm/mu epsilon and 0.267 pm/degrees C, respectively. It indicates that the temperature cross sensitivity is as low as 0.142 mu epsilon/degrees C.

Abstract:A novel optical fiber-coupled waveguide grating chip device based on Fano resonance effect is proposed and demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. It is fabricated by ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL), with the advantages of low-cost and easy mass production. Such a device can perform multifunctional sensing such as refractive index (RI) and pressure because the variations of the effective RI of the guide mode and the grating period will cause the resonant wavelength shifts under the change of external parameters. Through experimental verification, a RI sensitivity of 59.29 nm/RIU and a pressure sensitivity of 0.89 nm/MPa, a copper ion concentration detection sensitivity of 3.40 pm/ M are achieved, respectively. Furthermore, the chip sensing function is realized, and each arrayed sensing unit is interrogated through optical fiber scanning. This kind of optical fiber-coupled waveguide grating chip sensor can not only realize array sensing but also measure various physical and chemical parameters. It could find important applications in biochemical and industrial fields.

Abstract:Long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is one of the most important passive fiber devices. They work by coupling light from the fundamental core mode to the forward-propagating cladding mode, creating a series of resonant peaks in the transmission spectrum. In this paper, a series of no-core fiber (NCF) sections were periodically misaligned and embed in the single-mode fiber (SMF), to form a LPFG through the periodic refractive index (RI) modulation along the fiber axis. This fabricating method enhances the RI modulation to shorten the length of the proposed sensor to 2.82 mm. Experimental result shows that the highest RI sensitivity for the sensor reaches −4460.83 nm/RIU in a measuring range of 1.33–1.40 RIU at room temperature. Hopefully, the proposed study can lay some implementation methods for the design of the all-fiber compact RI sensor.

Abstract:Metallic grating (MG) with high accuracy is fabricated on the side surface of a D-shaped fiber by using focused ion beam (FIB) machining. The D-shaped fiber is obtained through polishing the cladding of a single-mode fiber away from one side. Then, a thin-film layer of gold is deposited on the flat side surface. A 38- μm-long grating with the pitch of 485 nm is further milled on the gold film. The guiding mode and the surface plasmon polariton mode are thus coupled in the MG through the evanescent field for sensing applications. The refractive indexes of pure water and isopropanol are measured. A sensitivity of 917 nm/RIU is obtained.

Abstract:A few-mode fiber (FMF)-embedded long-period fiber grating is proposed as a sensor for simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature. Periodically embedding the FMFs induces the local refractive index modulation to achieve a compact sensor size and obtains a low insertion loss. The simulated results show that the two resonance dips have opposite waveguide dispersion coefficients. Therefore, they show different refractive indices and temperature sensitivities in the experiment. At the same time, the spectral characteristics of double-resonance dips provides a condition for simultaneous measurement of two parameters. By monitoring wavelength shift of the two dips, the simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature is easily realized.
