Abstract:We present an alternative to fabricate ultra-small air-gap micro-cavity based Fabry-Perot interferometer (AG-MC-FPIs) for high-temperature sensing by focused ion beam (FIB) machining in tapered fiber tips (TFTs). Its size is smaller than 10μm and the sensitivity is ~20 pm/°C near the wavelength of 1550 nm.

Abstract:A miniaturized tip Fabry-Perot interferometer (tip-FPI) is proposed for high-temperature sensing. It is simply fabricated for the first time by splicing a short length of microfiber (MF) to the cleaved end of a standard single mode fiber (SMF) with precise control of the relative cross section position. Such a MF acts as a Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity and serves as a tip sensor. A change in temperature modifies the length and refractive index of the FP cavity, and then a corresponding change in the reflected interference spectrum can be observed. High temperatures of up to 1000 °C are measured in the experiments, and a high sensitivity of 13.6 pm/°C is achieved. This compact sensor, with tip diameter and length both of tens of microns, is suitable for localized detection, especially in harsh environments.

Abstract:A compact fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) sensor for high temperature measurements is proposed and demonstrated. The FPI consists of a small core microstructured fiber and single mode fiber, and it is enabled by partial Fresnel reflection at the interface of the two fibers and the end surface Fresnel reflection of the microstructured fiber. Simple splicing and cleaving techniques are used to construct such an interferometer, and the fringe contrast can reach 20 dB. Response to high temperature up to 1000°C is tested and a sensitivity of 17.7 pm/°C at 1570 nm is obtained. This proposed sensor is compact, and fabricated only with splicing and cleaving techniques, which shows a great potential for space-limited high temperature sensing applications.

Abstract:We present an ultra-small all-silica high temperature sensor based on a reflective Fabry-Perot modal interferometer (FPMI). Our FPMI is made of a micro-cavity (similar to 4.4 mu m) directly fabricated into a fiber taper probe less than 10 mu m in diameter. Its sensing head is a miniaturized single mode-multimode fiber configuration without splicing. The sensing mechanism of FPMI is the interference among reflected fundamental mode and excited high-order modes at the end-faces. Its temperature sensitivity is similar to 20 pm/degrees C near the wavelength of 1550 nm. This kind of sensor can work in harsh environments with ultra-large temperature gradient, but takes up little space because of its unique geometry and small size. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A simply fabricated, highly sensitive, and inexpensive optical fiber temperature sensor is reported with a Fabry–Perot (FP) microcavity of controlled length. The microcavity with controllable length is fabricated by single-mode fiber (SMF) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for temperature sensing. After the PDMS is cured, the SMF is connected to the supercontinuum light source (SCLS) and the optical spectrometer analyzer (OSA) for online observation of the reflection spectrum. The micro-displacement platform is used to pull the SMF to form an air cavity. After the air cavity is stabilized, ultraviolet (UV) activated glue is used for packaging outside the PDMS. The FP microcavity is formed by the end face of the SMF and the face of PDMS. The length of the FP microcavity can be controlled online by the micro-displacement platform to a minimum of 15 µm. The free spectral range (FSR) may reach 74.8 nm and the interference fringe contrast (IFC) is up to 19.8 dB to allow sensitive measurements across a wide temperature range. The experiments demonstrate a high temperature sensitivity of 5.388 nm/°C from 33 to 93 °C with high repeatability and linearity (R2=0.9937). Stability experiments showed that the maximum changes in wavelength and intensity are only 45 pm and 0.035 dB, respectively. It is anticipated that the easily constructed, compact, and inexpensive fiber-optic temperature sensor will be employed in practical applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical Fabry-Perot interferometer fiber tip sensor based on an etched end of multimode fiber filled with ultraviolet adhesive. The fiber device is miniature and robust, in a convenient reflection mode of operation, has a high temperature sensitivity of 213 pm/°C within the range from 55 to 85°C, a good refractive index sensitivity of ∼−73.54 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) within the range from 1.332 to 1.372, and a high gas pressure sensitivity of −40.94nm/MPa. This device has a high potential in monitoring extreme environment of high temperature and pressure when Sapphire fiber and stable high temperature glue are employed.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Snf-Swi, the prototypical ATP-dependent nucleosome-remodeling complex, regulates transcription of a subset of yeast genes. With the exception of Snf2p, the ATPase subunit, the functions of the other components are unknown. We have investigated the role of the conserved Snf-Swi core subunit Snf5p through characterization of two conditionalsnf5 mutants. The mutants contain single amino acid alterations of invariant or conserved residues that abolish Snf-Swi-dependent transcription by distinct mechanisms. One mutation impairs Snf-Swi assembly and, consequently, its stable association with a target promoter. The other blocks a postrecruitment catalytic remodeling step. These findings suggest that Snf5p coordinates the assembly and nucleosome-remodeling activities of Snf-Swi.

Abstract:An ~ 12-μm-long Bragg grating was engraved in an ~ 5-μm-diameter optical fiber tip by focused ion beam (FIB) milling. An ~ 10-dB extinction was achieved at 1570 nm with only 11 indentations. The grating was used for temperature sensing, and it exhibited a temperature sensitivity of ~ 22 pm°C.

Abstract:In this study, a fiber in-line air-gap Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) is fabricated by HF acid etching. For a low-cost and higher precise measurement, a demodulation system based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technique is build up and demonstrated in this air-gap FPI. In temperature measurements, the temperature sensitivity is about 1.75rad/°C by phase shift detection. We also test the long term performance of the system and the RMS error is about 0.04rad, which corresponds to the temperature resolution of ~0.02°C. It is much higher than the measurement resolution by using the traditional wavelength shift detection method. Our experiments show that the FMCW can provide a low-cost, high resolution and high speed interrogation solution to the fiber FPIs.

Abstract:We present a new fiber-optic high-temperature sensor based on a thin-core fiber (TCF) modal interferometer. A thin-core fiber, whose core radius is about half of the radius of a standard single-mode fiber (SMF), is inserted between standard SMFs to form an extremely simple in-fiber modal interferometer. The wavelength of the transmission dip increases linearly with the temperature. Experimental demonstration shows that it can be used to sense temperature up to 850 degrees C with a sensitivity of about 18.3 pm/degrees C.

Abstract:The optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) has been widely investigated as a potential temperature sensor. To function as a temperature sensor, the cavity of the FPI is typically constructed from either silica fibers or polymers. The silica cavity FPIs can function at temperatures exceeding 1000°C. However, its temperature sensitivity is constrained by its relatively low thermal optical coefficient and thermal expansion of silica materials. Although the polymer cavity FPI exhibits a high temperature sensitivity, its cavity is susceptible to deterioration in high-temperature environments. Here, to overcome this challenge and achieve high-sensitivity temperature sensing in a high-temperature environment, we propose a new type of temperature FPI sensor by inserting and sealing a section of Cr20Ni80 metal microwire inside a section of silica hollow core fiber (HCF) spliced to standard single-mode fiber (SMF). The FPIs exhibit a high degree of temperature sensitivity due to the high thermal expansion of the Cr20Ni80 metal microwire. Since the Cr20Ni80 metal has a high melting temperature of 1400°C, such FPIs can function in high-temperature environments. Moreover, the temperature sensitivity of this FPI can be modified without affecting its reflection spectrum by changing the length of the metallic microwire situated within the hollow core fiber. The experimental results indicate that the proposed FPIs exhibit a temperature sensitivity greater than -0.35nm/°C within the temperature range of 50°C to 440°C. Our proposed metal microwire-based FPIs are economical, robust, simple to fabricate, and capable of functioning in high-temperature environments, rendering them appealing options for practical applications

Abstract:We have proposed an ultra-compact double polymer-capped Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), which could be used for simultaneously measuring refractive index (RI) and temperature with low cross sensitivity. The designed and fabricated FPIs have double polymer layers which were fabricated by step-curing ultraviolet photoresist (SU-8) and polydimethylsiloxane on the end face of a traditional single-mode fibre. Three samples were fabricated with different Fabry-Perot cavity lengths. Experimental results show that the double polymer structure has higher temperature and RI sensitivities than single-layer structure. About 689.68pm/degrees C (based on the wavelength shift) in the temperature range of 20-75 degrees C and -147.04dB/RIU (based on peak intensity measurement) in the RI range of 1.335-1.355 were measured, respectively. Moreover, the compact structure, high temperature sensitivity and low cross-sensitivity of the FPI make it suitable for integration such as biomedical and microfluidic sensor probe.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate transverse load and strain sensing based on a fiber optic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with special air cavity, which was created by fusion splicing single mode fiber (SMF), hollow core fiber (HCF) and several electrical arc discharges. The cavity height of this structure is higher than the cladding diameter of SMF so that it can sense transverse load with high sensitivity. The transverse load sensitivity of this air cavity FPI sensor is 1.31 nm/N and about 5 times more sensitive compared to the current fiber tip interferometer (0.2526 nm/N). Meanwhile, this sensor also can measure strain and the strain sensitivity of 3.29 pm/mu epsilon is achieved. In addition, the low temperature sensitivity (1.08 pm/degrees C) of the sensor can reduce the temperature-induced measurement error. This novel air cavity FPI can be developed and used as high-sensitivity transverse load and strain sensor with temperature-insensitive. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, a microfiber Fabry-Perot interferometer temperature probe is proposed by fixing and encapsulating a microfiber and single-mode fiber in the silica capillary using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). In this structure, the cavity length of the Fabry-Perot interferometer refers to the distance between the end-face of the microfiber and that of the single-mode fiber, which can be adjusted precisely by 3D fiber adjustments. The microfiber Fabry-Perot interferometer has a microfiber diameter of 73 μm and a cavity length of 39 μm, being experimentally demonstrated with a high-temperature sensitivity of 6.386 nm/°C from 42 °C to 54 °C. An interesting optical modulation phenomenon has also been observed. This compact fiber probe can be used for real-time monitoring of temperature fluctuations in small and complex environments.

Abstract:This paper presents a miniature fiber-optic high-temperature pressure sensor fabricated on the tip of a singlemode (SM) fiber by means of fusion splicing, cleaving, and wet chemical etching. A new approach was developed to simplify the fabrication and greatly improve the sensitivity. The sensor is made entirely of fused silica, whose high-temperature sensing capability is explored in detail for the first time. Two sensors were tested up to 611 $^{\circ}\hbox{C}$ and 710 $^{\circ}\hbox{C}$, respectively, showing excellent repeatability better than 0.62% and 1.4%. The maximum operating temperature is limited by the mechanical creep of the fused silica diaphragm.

Abstract:Over decades, fiber-optic temperature sensors based on conventional single-mode fibers (SMF) have been demonstrated with either high linearity and stability in a limited temperature region or poor linearity and thermal hysteresis in a high-temperature measurement range. For high-temperature measurements, isothermal annealing is typically necessary for the fiber-optic sensors, aiming at releasing the residual stress, eliminating the thermal hysteresis and, thus, improving the high-temperature measurement linearity and stability. In this article, an annealing-free fiber-optic high-temperature (1100 °C) sensor based on a diaphragm-free hollow-core fiber (HCF) Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed sensor exhibits an excellent thermal stability and linearity (R2 > 0.99 in a 100–1100 °C range) without the need for high-temperature annealing. The proposed sensor is extremely simple in preparation, and the annealing-free property can reduce the cost of sensor production significantly, which is promising in mass production and industry applications.

Abstract:A novel miniature Fabry-Perot interferometric (FPI) temperature sensor is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The modal interferometer is fabricated by just splicing a section of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a single-mode fiber (SMF). The air holes of the PCF are fully collapsed by the discharge arc during the splicing procedure to enhance the reflection coefficient of the splicing point. The transmission spectra with different temperatures are measured, and the experimental results show that the linear response of 11.12 pm/°C in the range of 30–80 °C is obtained. This sensor has potential applications in temperature measurement field.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an all-silica first-order fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for high temperature sensing by focused ion beam (FIB) machining in a fiber probe tapered to a point. This 61-period FBG is compact (~ 36.6 μm long and ~ 6.5 μm in diameter) with 200-nm-deep shallow grooves. We have tested the sensor from room temperature to around 500 °C and it shows a temperature sensitivity of nearly 20 pm/°C near the resonant wavelength of 1550 nm.

Abstract:An ultracompact optical fiber Fabry–Perot interferometric sensor is proposed and demonstrated for high‐temperature measurement. The device is simply a section of single‐mode fiber with angled end face of 45°, the reflected light from the angled fiber end face is directed sequentially to the fiber core–cladding and cladding–air interfaces, respectively, and reflected back, and finally returned to the fiber core after being reflected by the angled fiber end face again. As a result, a Fabry–Perot interferometer is constructed. Because of the thermal‐expansion and thermal‐optical effect of the fiber material, the optical path difference between the core–cladding and cladding–air surfaces is changed with temperature, hence the device is well suitable for temperature measurement. In particular, the fiber device has good high‐temperature sustainability up to 1100°C, which makes it attractive for high‐temperature measurement in a narrow or hard‐to‐reach spatial environment.
