Abstract:This paper systematically investigates the influences of polarization states on laser-induced domain nucleation in z-cut LiNbO3 crystals. The real-time 2D and 3D phase distributions at the focus during laser-induced domain nucleation were reconstructed by digital holography. The different LiNbO3 samples, including undoped congruent LiNbO3, Mg-doped congruent LiNbO3, Hf-doped congruent LiNbO3, and stoichiometric LiNbO3, were tested. The systematical comparisons of phase mapping and nucleation fields with different polarization states, including linear polarization, circular polarization, and elliptical polarization, have been carried out. The polarization states proved to be a key influence factor for the laser-induced domain nucleation. It was demonstrated that the generated bulk photovoltaic field along the -z direction was an important mechanism for laser-induced preferential domain nucleation. This work is of great significance for the future development of ferroelectric domain engineering of LiNbO3 crystals.
Nonlinear Beam Shaping in Domain Engineered Ferroelectric Crystals.

Abstract:Domain engineered ferroelectric crystals are a type of microstructure functional material that is used widely in the area of nonlinear optics. Herein, research processes in the area of nonlinear beam shaping using domain engineered crystals in the past decade are reviewed. The newly developed design methods, such as the nonlinear Huygens-Fresnel principle, nonlinear volume holography, and caustic design, which have analogs in linear optics, are introduced. Using the proposed methods for nonlinear beam shaping, multiple function integration, generation of Airy beams, and arbitrary curved trajectories are realized. As an extra degree of freedom, orbital angular momentum of light beams is generated and manipulated through domain engineering. Discussions and future directions in this field are presented.
Optical Controlled Switch Behaviour of the Zns : Cu and Sral2o4 : Eu Phosphors

Abstract:We study the effects of a laser beam from the laser diode operating at 980 nm on the violet-excited ZnS:Cu and SrAl2O4:Eu phosphor powders. Two contrary phenomena, i.e., infrared-induced permanent quenching and short-lived enhancement of phosphorescence, are observed. The defect levels play a significant role in both the processes. It is demonstrated that the phosphorescence induced by the violet beam can be controlled by another infrared beam. The turn-off and turn-on behaviour means that doping luminescent centres into host materials is a considerable way to design a new all-optical switch and may control the output of laser beams in the fibre lasers and optical communications.

Abstract:One promising technique for working toward practical photonic quantum technologies is to implement multiple operations on a monolithic chip, thereby improving stability, scalability and miniaturization. The on-chip spatial control of entangled photons will certainly benefit numerous applications, including quantum imaging, quantum lithography, quantum metrology and quantum computation. However, external optical elements are usually required to spatially control the entangled photons. Here we present the first experimental demonstration of on-chip spatial control of entangled photons, based on a domain-engineered nonlinear photonic crystal. We manipulate the entangled photons using the inherent properties of the crystal during the parametric downconversion, demonstrating two-photon focusing and beam-splitting from a periodically poled lithium tantalate crystal with a parabolic phase profile. These experimental results indicate that versatile and precise spatial control of entangled photons is achievable. Because they may be operated independent of any bulk optical elements, domain-engineered nonlinear photonic crystals may prove to be a valuable ingredient in on-chip integrated quantum optics.

Abstract:Simultaneous manipulation of multiple degrees of freedom of light lies at the heart of photonics. Nonlinear wavefront shaping offers an exceptional way to achieve this goal by converting incident light into beams of new frequencies with spatially varied phase, amplitude, and angular momenta. Nevertheless, the reconfigurable control over structured light fields for advanced multimode nonlinear photonics remains a grand challenge. Here, we propose the concept of nonlinear geometric phase in an emerging ferroelectric nematic fluid, of which the second-order nonlinear susceptibility carries spin-dependent nonlinearity phase. A case study with photopatterned q-plates demonstrates the generation of second-harmonic optical vortices with spin-locked topological charges by using cascaded linear and nonlinear optical spin-orbit interactions. Furthermore, we present the dynamic tunability of second-harmonic structured light through temperature, electric field, and twisted elastic force. The proposed strategy opens new avenues for reconfigurable nonlinear photonics, with potential applications in optical communications, quantum computing, high-resolution imaging, etc.

Abstract:Materials that exhibit ferroaxial order hold potential for novel multiferroic applications. However, in pure ferroaxials, domains are not directly coupled to stress or static electric field due to their symmetry, limiting the ability to pole and switch between domains -- features required for real-world applications. Here we propose a general approach to selectively condense and switch between ferroaxial domains with light. We show that circularly polarized light pulses on resonance with infrared-active phonons manifest helicity-dependent control over ferroaxial domains. Nonlinear contributions to the lattice polarizability play an essential role in this phenomenon. We illustrate the feasibility of our approach using first-principle calculations and dynamical simulations for the archetypal ferroaxial material RbFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$. Our results are discussed in the context of future pump-probe optical experiments, where polarization, carrier frequency, and fluence threshold are explored.

Abstract:Domain wall nanoelectronics constitutes a potential paradigm shift for next‐generation energy conversion and von‐Neumann devices. In this context, attempts have been made to achieve energy‐efficient control over ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and ferroelastic domain walls through electric and magnetic fields or applied stress. However, optical control of ferroic domains offers an additional degree of freedom and significant advantages of reduced hysteresis and Joule heating losses, creating novel opportunities in the regime of nanoelectronics and photonics. Herein, the reversible optical control of ferroelectric domains and domain walls in a novel band‐gap‐engineered lead‐free ferroelectric ceramic ((K0.5Na0.5)NbO3–2 mol% Ba(Ni0.5Nb0.5)O3−δ) is demonstrated. The optical poling behaves similar to electrical poling and is governed by the bulk ferroelectric photovoltaic effect. The light‐generated charge carriers are transported toward domain walls or electrodes due to a nonzero field in the samples. This causes a change in internal electric field influencing the nanoscale state of polarization, which could also be interesting for other ferroelectrics if the voltage generated by light is in the range of the switching voltages. This work establishes a relationship between light‐induced macroscopic observations and nanoscale changes in the ferroelectric response, providing fundamental insight and facilitating research into ferroelectric photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials have shown great potential for control of the optical process in emerging materials. There are three ways for them to impact on the optical process in various materials. They can act as external perturbations, such as ferroelectric gating and piezoelectric strain, to tune the optical properties of the materials and devices. Second, ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity as innate attributes may exist in some optoelectronic materials, which can couple with other functional features (e.g., semiconductor transport, photoexcitation, and photovoltaics) in the materials giving rise to unprecedented device characteristics. The last way is artificially introducing optical functionalities into ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials and devices, which provides an opportunity for investigating the intriguing interplay between the parameters (e.g., electric field, temperature, and strain) and the introduced optical properties. Here, the tuning strategies, fundamental mechanisms, and recent progress in ferroelectric and piezoelectric effects modulating the optical properties of a wide spectrum of materials, including lanthanide-doped phosphors, quantum dots, 2D materials, wurtzite-type semiconductors, and hybrid perovskites, are presented. Finally, the future outlook and challenges of this exciting field are suggested.

Abstract:Ferroelectric domain engineering has wide applications in optical and electronic industries. Compared with traditional electric field poling, femtosecond laser poling has many advantages, such as higher fabrication resolution, 3D engineering applicability, and lower costs of production. In this review, the recent research progress on ferroelectric domain engineering with femtosecond laser pulses is presented. We show the latest results, including complex domain structures fabricated in various kinds of ferroelectric crystals, and discuss the influence of laser poling parameters and conditions on the morphologies of inverted domains and their physical mechanisms. The technical challenges to overcome in future are also briefly discussed.

Light-Induced Transitions of Polar State and Domain Morphology of Photo-Ferroelectric Nanoparticles

Abstract:Using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach, we study light-induced phase transitions, evolution of polar state and domain morphology in photo-ferroelectric nanoparticles (NPs). Light exposure increases the free carrier density near the NP surface and may in turn induce phase transitions from the nonpolar paraelectric to the polar ferroelectric phase. Using the uniaxial photo-ferroelectric Sn2P2S6 as an example, we show that visible light exposure induces the appearance and vanishing of striped, labyrinthine or curled domains and changes in the polarization switching hysteresis loop shape from paraelectric curves to double, pinched and single loops, as well as the shifting in the position of the tricritical point. Furthermore, we demonstrate that an ensemble of non-interacting photo-ferroelectric NPs may exhibit superparaelectric-like features at the tricritical point, such as strongly frequency-dependent giant piezoelectric and dielectric responses, which can potentially be exploited for piezoelectric applications.

Abstract:The feasibility of forming periodic ferroelectric domain structures in ferroelectric crystals as: LiNbO3, LiTaO3 and Ba2NaNb5O15, has extended the range of application of these materials in the photonic field. In fact, it has been demonstrated the ability, using these ferroelectric periodic structures, to manufacture different non-linear optical devices as: optical super- lattices (OSLs), second harmonic generation (SHG), and difference frequency generation (DFG), as well as in new fields like squeezed light generation for optical communication and information processing (1,2). These periodic ferroelectric structures can be achieved using different procedures: during the crystal growth by the "off centre Czochraski technique" (OCCT), applying an external electric field (EF) or by electron beam injection method (EBI). The aim of this work is to study, in periodically poled LiNbO3 (CT), LiTaO3 (EF) and Ba2NaNb5O15 (CT) crystals, new phenomena arising from the interaction between laser propagating beams and refractive index singularities associated with the ferroelectric domains. For this purpose scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) technique has been used (3). The SNOM study has been combined with far field light diffraction experiments.
Ferroelectric modulation of quantum emitters in monolayer WS$_2$

Abstract:Quantum photonics promises significant advances in secure communications, metrology, sensing and information processing/computation. Single photon sources are fundamental to this endeavor. However, the lack of high quality single photon sources remains a significant obstacle. We present here a new paradigm for the control of single photon emitters (SPEs) and single photon purity by integrating monolayer WS$_2$ with the organic ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)). We demonstrate that the ferroelectric domains in the P(VDF-TrFE) film control the purity of single photon emission from the adjacent WS$_2$. By switching the ferroelectric polarization, we reversibly tune the single photon purity between the semi-classical and quantum light regimes, with single photon purities as high as 94%. This provides another avenue for modulating and encoding quantum photonic information, complementing more complex approaches. This novel multidimensional heterostructure introduces a new avenue for control of quantum emitters by combining the nonvolatile ferroic properties of a ferroelectric with the radiative properties of the zero-dimensional atomic scale emitters embedded in the two-dimensional WS$_2$ semiconductor monolayer.

Abstract:PT‐relaxor ferroelectrics exhibit excellent piezoelectric and quadratic nonlinear optical properties, making them prominent candidates for realization of phononic and nonlinear photonic crystals which rely on spatially patterned ferroelectric domains. However, formation of domain patterns, especially in three dimensions, has been challenging. This paper presents the first experimental demonstration of localized ferroelectric domains and their 2D and 3D patterns inside 0.62Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐0.38PbTiO3 (PMN‐38PT) single‐domain crystals engineered with focused near‐infrared femtosecond laser pulses. Two types of domains are optically induced. Primary domains are formed in the focal volume of the beam, and secondary domains appearing at higher laser power, in the shape of hollow cylindrical structures, are formed around the beam. A physical mechanism of optical domain inversion involving thermoelectric and space charge fields is proposed. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of domain formation and structuring in PMN‐PT relaxor‐based ferroelectrics, paving the way to integrate electromechanical, acoustic, and nonlinear optical effects in a single crystal. 3D domain inversions are realized in 0.62Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐0.38PbTiO3 single domain crystals by focused near‐infrared femtosecond pulses. Primary domains and optically erasable secondary domains can be formed in the focus and around the beam, respectively. A physical model of optical domain inversion and erasure is proposed. The results are crucial for developing hybrid devices combining piezoelectric and optical effects in monolithic crystals.

Coherence control of directional nonlinear photocurrent in spatially symmetric systems

Abstract:The interplay between crystal symmetry and its optical responses is at the heart of tremendous recent advances in light-matter interactions and applications. Nonlinear optical processes that produce electric currents, for example the bulk photovoltaic (BPV) effect, require inversion-symmetry-broken materials, such as ferroelectrics. In this work, we demonstrate that such BPV current could be generated in centrosymmetric materials with excitation of out-of-equilibrium coherent phonons. This is very different from the generally studied static or thermally excited states. We show that depending on the coherent phonon phase factor, the photoconductivity contains a static zero-frequency component, as well as THz frequency components. This indicates that a unidirectional current may emerge under synergistic effects of atomic vibration and light irradiation. We also generalize the conventional injection charge current into angular momentum (spin and orbital) degrees of freedom, and demonstrate spin and orbital BPV photoconductivities under coherent phonons. Our findings open the pathway to exploring the exotic phonon-photon-electron coherent interactions in quantum materials.

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ) is viewed as a promising material for optical communications and quantum photonic chips 1,2 . Recent breakthroughs in LiNbO 3 nanophotonics have considerably boosted the development of high-speed electro-optic modulators 3,4,5 , frequency combs 6,7 and broadband spectrometers 8 . However, the traditional method of electrical poling for ferroelectric domain engineering in optic 9,10,11,12,13 , acoustic 14,15,16,17 and electronic applications 18,19 is limited to two-dimensional space and micrometre-scale resolution. Here we demonstrate a non-reciprocal near-infrared laser-writing technique for reconfigurable three-dimensional ferroelectric domain engineering in LiNbO 3 with nanoscale resolution. The proposed method is based on a laser-induced electric field that can either write or erase domain structures in the crystal, depending on the laser-writing direction. This approach offers a pathway for controllable nanoscale domain engineering in LiNbO 3 and other transparent ferroelectric crystals, which has potential applications in high-efficiency frequency mixing 20,21 , high-frequency acoustic resonators 14,15,16,17 and high-capacity non-volatile ferroelectric memory 19,22 .

Wave-front engineering by Huygens-Fresnel principle for nonlinear optical interactions in domain engineered structures

Abstract:The wave-front engineering for nonlinear optical interactions was discussed. Using Huygens-Fresnel principle we developed a general theory and technique for domain engineering with conventional quasi-phase-matching structures being the special cases. By Fourier analysis we put forward the concept of local quasi-phase matching, which suggests that the quasi-phase matching is fulfilled only locally not globally. Experiments on focal effect of second-harmonic wave agreed well with the theoretical prediction. The proposed scheme combines three optical functions: generation, focusing and beam splitting of second-harmonic wave, thus making the device more compact. Further the proposed scheme can be used to perform the integration of multi-functional optical properties in nonlinear photonics, as well as expand the use of nonlinear optical devices.
