Abstract:In China, son preference and sex-selective abortion have led to 32 million excess males under the age of 20 years.• Men for whom marriage is unavailable are assumed to be psychologically vulnerable and may be prone to aggression and violence.• Policy-makers are addressing some causes of the high sex ratio at birth, but more could be done.• It will be several decades before the sex ratio at birth in countries like India and China is within normal limits.
