Abstract:We derive explicit formulas for the Lin-Lu-Yau curvature and the Ollivier-Ricci curvature in terms of graph parameters and an optimal assignment. Utilizing these precise expressions, we examine the relationship between the Lin-Lu-Yau curvature and the 0-Ollivier-Ricci curvature, resulting in an equality condition on regular graphs. This condition allows us to characterize edges that are bone idle in regular graphs of girth four and to construct a family of bone idle graphs with this girth. We then use our formulas to provide an efficient implementation of the Ollivier-Ricci curvature on regular graphs, enabling us to identify all bone idle, regular graphs with fewer than 15 vertices. Moreover, we establish a rigidity theorem for cocktail party graphs, proving that a regular graph is a cocktail party graph if and only if its Lin-Lu-Yau curvature is equal to one. We conclude this work by presenting a condition on the degree of a regular graph that guarantees positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:Abstract Many empirical networks incorporate higher order relations between elements and therefore are naturally modelled as, possibly directed and/or weighted, hypergraphs, rather than merely as graphs. In order to develop a systematic tool for the statistical analysis of such hypergraph, we propose a general definition of Ricci curvature on directed hypergraphs and explore the consequences of that definition. The definition generalizes Ollivier’s definition for graphs. It involves a carefully designed optimal transport problem between sets of vertices. While the definition looks somewhat complex, in the end we shall be able to express our curvature in a very simple formula, $$\kappa =\mu _0-\mu _2-2\mu _3$$ κ = μ 0 - μ 2 - 2 μ 3 . This formula simply counts the fraction of vertices that have to be moved by distances 0, 2 or 3 in an optimal transport plan. We can then characterize various classes of hypergraphs by their curvature.

Abstract:We give a generalizations of lower Ricci curvature bound in the framework of graphs. We prove that the Ricci curvature in the sense of Bakry and Emery is bounded below by $-1$ on locally finite graphs. The Ricci flat graph in the sense of Chung and Yau is proved to be a graph with Ricci curvature bounded below by zero. We also get an estimate for the eigenvalue of Laplace operator on finite graphs: $$\lambda\ge {1\over d D(\exp( d D+1)-1)},$$ where $d$ is the weighted degree of $G$, and $D$ is the diameter of $G$.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a simple formula for computing the Lin-Lu-Yau Ricci curvature on graphs. For any edge $xy$ in a simple locally finite graph $G$, the curvature $\kappa(x,y)$ can be expressed as a cost function of an optimal bijection between two blow-up sets of the neighbors of $x$ and $y$. Utilizing this approach, we derive several results including a structural theorem for the Bonnet-Myers sharp irregular graphs of diameter $3$ and a theorem on $C_3$-free Bonnet-Myers sharp graphs.

Abstract:Recently, Y. Ollivier defined the Ricci curvature of Markov chains on Polish spaces via the contractivity of transition kernels under the L-1 Wasserstein metric. In this paper, we will discuss further the spectral gap, entropy decay, and logarithmic Sobolev inequality for the lambda-range gradient operator. As an application, given resistance forms (i.e. symmetric Dirichlet forms with finite effective resistance) on fractals, we can construct Markov chains with positive Ricci curvature, which yields the Gaussian-then-exponential concentration of invariant distributions for Lipschitz test functions.

Abstract:Lin, Lu, and Yau formulated the Ricci curvature of edges in simple undirected graphs[2]. Using their formulations, we calculate the Ricci curvatures of Cayley graphs for the dihedral groups, the general quaternion groups, and cyclic groups with some generating sets that are chosen so that their cardinal numbers are less than or equal to four. For the dihedral group and the general quaternion group, we obtained the Ricci curvatures of all edges of the Cayley graph with generator sets consisting of the four elements that are the two generators defining each group and their inverses elements.For the cyclic group (Z/nZ, +), we have the Ricci curvatures of edges of the Cayley graph generating by S_{1, k} = {+1, -1, +k, -k}.

Abstract:Abstract The coarse Ricci curvature of graphs introduced by Ollivier as well as its modification by Lin–Lu– Yau have been studied from various aspects. In this paper, we propose a new transport distance appropriate for hypergraphs and study a generalization of Lin–Lu–Yau type curvature of hypergraphs. As an application, we derive a Bonnet–Myers type estimate for hypergraphs under a lower Ricci curvature bound associated with our transport distance. We remark that our transport distance is new even for graphs and worthy of further study.

Abstract:Curvature serves as a potent and descriptive invariant, with its efficacy validated both theoretically and practically within graph theory. We employ a definition of generalized Ricci curvature proposed by Ollivier, which Lin and Yau later adapted to graph theory, known as Ollivier-Ricci curvature (ORC). ORC measures curvature using the Wasserstein distance, thereby integrating geometric concepts with probability theory and optimal transport. Jost and Liu previously discussed the lower bound of ORC by showing the upper bound of the Wasserstein distance. We extend the applicability of these bounds to discrete spaces with metrics on integers, specifically hypergraphs. Compared to prior work on ORC in hypergraphs by Coupette, Dalleiger, and Rieck, which faced computational challenges, our method introduces a simplified approach with linear computational complexity, making it particularly suitable for analyzing large-scale networks. Through extensive simulations and application to synthetic and real-world datasets, we demonstrate the significant improvements our method offers in evaluating ORC.

Abstract:A graph is called Ricci-flat if its Ricci curvatures vanish on all edges, here the definition of Ricci curvature on graphs was given by Lin-Lu-Yau. The authors in arXiv:1301.0102 and arXiv:1802.02982 obtained a complete characterization for all Ricci-flat graphs with girth at least five. In this paper, we completely determined all Ricci-flat graphs with maximum degree at most 4.

Abstract:We study the Ollivier-Ricci curvature and its modification introduced by Lin, Lu, and Yau on graphs. We provide a complete characterization of all graphs with Lin-Lu-Yau curvature at least one. We then explore the relationship between the Lin-Lu-Yau curvature and the Ollivier-Ricci curvature with vanishing idleness on regular graphs. An exact formula for the difference between these two curvature notions is established, along with an equality condition. This condition allows us to characterize edges that are bone-idle in regular graphs. Furthermore, we demonstrate the non-existence of 3-regular bone-idle graphs and present a complete characterization of all 4-regular bone-idle graphs. We also show that there exist no 5-regular bone-idle graphs that are symmetric or a Cartesian product of a 3-regular and a 2-regular graph.

Abstract:We study the existence of solutions of Ricci flow equations of Ollivier-Lin-Lu-Yau curvature defined on weighted graphs. Our work is motivated by\cite{NLLG} in which the discrete time Ricci flow algorithm has been applied successfully as a discrete geometric approach in detecting complex networks. Our main result is the existence and uniqueness theorem for solutions to a continuous time normalized Ricci flow. We also display possible solutions to the Ricci flow on path graph and prove the Ricci flow on finite star graph with at least three leaves converges to constant-weighted star.

Abstract:The connection between curvature and topology is a very well-studied theme in the subject of differential geometry. By suitably defining curvature on networks, the study of this theme has been extended into the domain of network analysis as well. In particular, this has led to curvature-based community detection algorithms. In this paper, we reveal the relation between community structure of a network and the curvature of its edges. In particular, we give apriori bounds on the curvature of intercommunity edges of a graph.

Abstract:We prove a weaker version of a conjecture proposed by Qiao, Park and Koolen on diameter bounds of amply regular graphs and make new progress on Terwilliger's conjecture on finiteness of amply regular graphs. We achieve these results by a significantly improved Lin--Lu--Yau curvature estimate and new Bakry--Émery curvature estimates. We further discuss applications of our curvature estimates to bounding eigenvalues, isoperimetric constants, and volume growth. In particular, we obtain a volume estimate of amply regular graphs which is sharp for hypercubes.

Abstract:The definition of Ricci curvature on graphs given in Lin-Lu-Yau, Tohoku Math., 2011, which is a variation of Ollivier, J. Funct. Math., 2009. Recently, a powerful limit-free formulation of Lin-Lu-Yau curvature using graph Laplacian was given in Münch-Wojciechowski, Adv. Math., 2019. Let $F_k$ be the friendship graph obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex and $T$ be the graph obtained from a triangle and $K_{1,3}$ by adding a matching between every leave of $K_{1,3}$ and a vertex of the triangle. In this paper, we classify all of connected $C_4$-free graphs with positive LLY curvature for minimum degree at least 2: the cycles $C_3,C_5$, the friendship graphs $F_2,F_3$ and $T$.

Abstract:We study the Ollivier-Ricci curvature of graphs as a function of the chosen idleness. We show that this idleness function is concave and piecewise linear with at most $3$ linear parts, with at most $2$ linear parts in the case of a regular graph. We then apply our result to show that the idleness function of the Cartesian product of two regular graphs is completely determined by the idleness functions of the factors.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new notion of curvature on the edges of a graph that is defined in terms of effective resistances. We call this the Ricci--Foster curvature. We study the Ricci flow resulting from this curvature. We prove the existence of solutions to Ricci flow on short time intervals, and prove that Ricci flow preserves graphs with nonnegative (resp. positive) curvature.

Abstract:Bridging geometry and topology, curvature is a powerful and expressive invariant. While the utility of curvature has been theoretically and empirically confirmed in the context of manifolds and graphs, its generalization to the emerging domain of hypergraphs has remained largely unexplored. On graphs, the Ollivier-Ricci curvature measures differences between random walks via Wasserstein distances, thus grounding a geometric concept in ideas from probability theory and optimal transport. We develop ORCHID, a flexible framework generalizing Ollivier-Ricci curvature to hypergraphs, and prove that the resulting curvatures have favorable theoretical properties. Through extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world hypergraphs from different domains, we demonstrate that ORCHID curvatures are both scalable and useful to perform a variety of hypergraph tasks in practice.
