Abstract:By guessing the relative quantities and proving the recursive relation, we present some continued fraction expansions of the Rogers–Ramanujan type. Meanwhile, we also give some J -fraction expansions for the q -tangent and q -cotangent functions.

For example, if $R(q)$ denotes the Rogers\textendash Ramanujan continued fraction, then \begin{align*}&R(q)R(q^4)=\dfrac{R(q^5)+R(q^{20})-R(q^5)R(q^{20})}{1+R(q^{5})+R(q^{20})},\\ &\dfrac{1}{R(q^{2})R(q^{3})}+R(q^{2})R(q^{3})= 1+\dfrac{R(q)}{R(q^{6})}+\dfrac{R(q^{6})}{R(q)}, \end{align*}and\begin{align*}R(q^2)=\dfrac{R(q)R(q^3)}{R(q^6)}\cdot\dfrac{R(q) R^2(q^3) R(q^6)+2 R(q^6) R(q^{12})+ R(q) R(q^3) R^2(q^{12})}{R(q^3) R(q^6)+2 R(q) R^2(q^3) R(q^{12})+ R^2(q^{12})}.\end{align*} In the process, we also find some new relations for the Rogers-Ramanujan functions by using dissections of theta functions and the quintuple product identity.

Abstract:We observe that certain famous evaluations of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $R(q)$ are close to $2\pi-6$ and $(2\pi-6)/2\pi$, and that $2\pi-6$ can be expressed by a Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction in which $q$ is very nearly equal to $R^5(e^{-2\pi})$. The value of $-{5\over \alpha}\ln R(e^{-2\alpha \pi})$ converges to $2\pi$ as $\alpha$ increases. For $\alpha=5^n$, a modular equation by Ramanujan provides recursive closed-form expressions that approximate the value of $2\pi$, the number of correct digits increasing by a factor of five each time $n$ increases by one. If we forgo closed-form expressions, a modular equation by Rogers allows numerical iterations that converge still faster to $2\pi$, each iteration increasing the number of correct digits by a multiple of eleven.

Abstract:Let $R(q)$ denote the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction for $|q| < 1$. By applying the RootApproximant command in the Wolfram language to expressions involving the theta function $f(-q) := (q;q)_{\infty}$ given in modular relations due to Yi, this provides a systematic way of obtaining experimentally discovered evaluations for $R\big(e^{-\pi\sqrt{r}}\big)$, for $r \in \mathbb{Q}_{> 0}$. We succeed in applying this approach to obtain explicit closed forms, in terms of radicals over $\mathbb{Q}$, for the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction that have not previously been discovered or proved. We prove our closed forms using the icosahedral equation for $R$ together with closed forms for and modular relations associated with Ramanujan's $G$- and $g$-functions. An especially remarkable closed form that we introduce and prove is for $R\big( e^{-\pi \sqrt{48/5} } \big)$, in view of the computational difficulties surrounding the application of an order-25 modular relation in the evaluation of $G_{48/5}$.

Abstract:We study the modularity of the functions of the form $r(\tau)^ar(2\tau)^b$, where $a$ and $b$ are integers with $(a,b)\neq (0,0)$ and $r(\tau)$ is the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, which may be considered as companions to the Ramanujan's function $k(\tau)=r(\tau)r(2\tau)^2$. In particular, we show that under some condition on $a$ and $b$, there are finitely many such functions generating the field of all modular functions on the congruence subgroup $\Gamma_1(10)$. Furthermore, we establish certain arithmetic properties of the function $l(\tau)=r(2\tau)/r(\tau)^2$, which can be used to evaluate these products. We employ the methods of Lee and Park, and some properties of $\eta$-quotients and generalized $\eta$-quotients to prove our results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the $5$-dissections of certain Ramanujan's theta functions, particularly $\psi(q)\psi(q^2), \varphi(-q)$ and $\varphi(-q)\varphi(-q^2)$, and derive an identity for $q(q;q)_{\infty}^6/(q^5;q^5)_{\infty}^6$ in terms of certain products of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $R(q)$. Using this identity, we give another proof of the modular equation involving $R(q), R(q^2)$ and $R(q^4)$, which was recorded by Ramanujan in his lost notebook, and establish modular equations involving $R(q), R(q^2), R(q^4), R(q^8)$ and $R(q^{16})$.

Abstract:The two Rogers–Ramanujan q-series ∑n=0∞qn(n+σ)(1−q)⋯(1−qn), where σ=0,1, play many roles in mathematics and physics. By the Rogers–Ramanujan identities, they are essentially modular functions. Their quotient, the Rogers–Ramanujan continued fraction, has the special property that its singular values are algebraic integral units. We find a framework which extends the Rogers–Ramanujan identities to doubly infinite families of q-series identities. If a∈{1,2} and m,n≥1, then we have ∑λ,λ1≤mqa|λ|P2λ(1,q,q2,…;qn)=[infiniteproductmodularfunction],where the Pλ(x1,x2,…;q) are Hall–Littlewood polynomials. These q-series are specialized characters of affine Kac–Moody algebras. Generalizing the Rogers–Ramanujan continued fraction, we prove in the case of A2n(2) that the relevant q-series quotients are integral units.

Abstract:We introduce a $q$-analog of the higher continued fractions introduced by the last three authors in a previous work (together with Gregg Musiker), which are simultaneously a generalization of the $q$-rational numbers of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko. They are defined as ratios of generating functions for $P$-partitions on certain posets. We give matrix formulas for computing them, which generalize previous results in the $q=1$ case. We also show that certain properties enjoyed by the $q$-rationals are also satisfied by our higher versions.

Abstract:In this paper, we show how to deduce several moment integrals by the method of q-difference equation. In addition, we obtain several generalizations of transformational identities by the technique of moment integrals. Meanwhile, we obtain some special cases of bilateral-unilateral series and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities as by-products. Moreover, we give two mixed generating functions for generalized Rogers-Szego polynomials by moment integrals and derive two transformational identities by symmetry. At last, a trilinear generating function for generalized Rogers-Szego polynomials is given by moment integrals.

Continued fractions of cubic Laurent series

Abstract:We construct continued fraction expansions for several families of the Laurent series in $\mathbb{Q}[[t^{-1}]]$. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first result of this kind since Gauss derived the continued fraction expansion for $(1+t)^r$, $r\in\mathbb{Q}$ in 1813. As an application, we apply an analogue of the hypergeometric method to one of those families and derive non-trivial lower bounds on the distance $|x - \frac{p}{q}|$ between one of the real roots of $3x^3 - 3tx^2-3ax+at$, $a,t\in\mathbb{Z}$ and any rational number, under relatively mild conditions on the parameters $a$ and $t$. We also show that every cubic irrational $x\in\mathbb{R}$ admits a (generalised) continued fraction expansion in a closed form that can be explicitly computed. Finally, we provide an infinite series of cubic irrationals $x$ that have arbitrarily (but finitely) many better-than-expected rational approximations. That is, they are such that for any $\tau< 3+\frac{15\ln 2}{24}\approx 3.4332...$ the inequality $||qx|| < (H(x)^{\tau} qe^{c\sqrt{\ln q}})^{-1}$ has many solutions in integer $q$.

Ramanujan's continued fractions of order $10$ as modular functions

Abstract:We explore the modularity of the continued fractions $I(\tau), J(\tau), T_1(\tau), T_2(\tau)$ and $U(\tau)=I(\tau)/J(\tau)$ of order $10$, where $I(\tau)$ and $J(\tau)$ are introduced by Rajkhowa and Saikia, which are special cases of certain identities of Ramanujan. In particular, we show that these fractions can be expressed in terms of an $\eta$-quotient $g(\tau)$ that generates the field of all modular functions on the congruence subgroup $\Gamma_0(10)$. Consequently, we prove that modular equations for $g(\tau)$ and $U(\tau)$ exist at any level, and derive these equations of prime levels $p\leq 11$. We also show that the above continued fractions of order $10$ can be explicitly evaluated using a singular value of $g(\tau)$, which, under certain conditions, generates the Hilbert class field of an imaginary class field. We employ the methods of Lee and Park to establish our results.

Abstract:In this paper, we are mainly interested in using the $q$-exponential operator of Chen [8] in proving identities involving the generalized Rogers-Szegö polynomials r$_{n}(x,b;q)$ of Saad [11], the $(s,t)$-derivatives of Partial Theta function $\Theta_{0}(x,q)$ of Ramanujan, the generalized simplicial $d$-polytopic numbers $\fibonomial{n+d}{d}_{s,t}$, and the deformed $(s,t)$-trinomial series, both introduced in this paper. In particular, we will give the deformed and non-deformed ordinary generating functions of the sequences $\rr_{n}(x,b;q)$, $\fibonomial{n+d}{d}_{s,t}$, $\qbinom{n+d}{d}_{q}^2$, and $\qbinom{n+d}{d}_{q}\rr_{n}(x,b;q)$. We also derive $(s,t)$-analogues of the alternating sums of squares and sums of cubes.

On Convergents of Proper Continued Fractions

Abstract:Proper continued fractions are generalized continued fractions with positive integer numerators $a_i$ and integer denominators with $b_i\geq a_i$. In this paper we study the strength of approximation of irrational numbers to their convergents and classify which pairs of integers $p,q$ yield a convergent $p/q$ to some irrational $x$. Notably, we reduce the problem to finding convergence only of index one and two. We completely classify the possible choices for convergents of odd index and provide a near-complete classification for even index. We furthermore propose a natural two-dimensional generalization of the classical Gauss map as a method for dynamically generating all possible expansions and establish ergodicity of this map.

Abstract:Recently a new class of continued fraction algorithms, the )-expansions, was introduced in Kraaikamp and Langeveld (J Math Anal Appl 454(1):106–126, 2017) for each , and . Each of these continued fraction algorithms has only finitely many possible digits. These -expansions 'behave' very different from many other (classical) continued fraction algorithms; see also Chen and Kraaikamp (Matching of orbits of certain n -expansions with a finite set of digits (2022). To appear in Tohoku Math. J arXiv:2209.08882), de Jonge and Kraaikamp (Integers 23:17, 2023), de Jonge et al. (Monatsh Math 198(1):79–119, 2022), Nakada (Tokyo J Math 4(2):399–426, 1981) for examples and results. In this paper we will show that when all digits in the digit set are co-prime with N , which occurs in specified intervals of the parameter space, something extraordinary happens. Rational numbers and certain quadratic irrationals will not have a periodic expansion. Furthermore, there are no matching intervals in these regions. This contrasts sharply with the regular continued fraction and more classical parameterised continued fraction algorithms, for which often matching is shown to hold for almost every parameter. On the other hand, for small enough, all rationals have an eventually periodic expansion with period 1. This happens for all when . We also find infinitely many matching intervals for , as well as rationals that are not contained in any matching interval.
