Abstract:In this paper, we consider a discrete almost periodic Lotka–Volterra competition system with delays. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the permanence and global attractivity of the system. Further, by means of an almost periodic functional hull theory, we show that the almost periodic system has a unique strictly positive almost periodic solution, which is globally attractive. Some examples are presented to verify our main results.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a Lotka–Volterra competition system with two dynamical resources and density-dependent motility under the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. Here, we put the two competing species into a predator–prey system, and assume that the two competing species as predators can feed on different preys and that the preys as resources admit temporal dynamics including spatial movement, intrinsic birth–death kinetics and loss due to predation. When the distributions of prey's resources can be homogeneous, by using some proper Lyapunov functionals and applying LaSalle's invariant principle, we obtain that the solution can converge to the positive steady state exponentially or to the competitive exclusion steady states algebraically as time goes to infinity. Our finding shows that the consideration of temporal dynamics on the resources can lead to the coexistence of two competitors in some parameter conditions regardless of their dispersal rates. When the distributions of prey's resources are spatially heterogeneous, we conduct several numerical simulations in different combinations of dispersal strategy and the distributions of prey's resources, and we show that the non-random dispersal and heterogeneous distributions of prey's resources can affect the fates of two competitors.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the almost periodic dynamics of a multispecies Lotka-Volterra mutualism system with time varying delays on time scales. By establishing some dynamic inequalities on time scales, a permanence result for the model is obtained. Furthermore, by means of the almost periodic functional hull theory on time scales and Lyapunov functional, some criteria are obtained for the existence, uniqueness and global attractivity of almost periodic solutions of the model. Our results complement and extend some scientific work in recent years. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the main results.

Abstract:We investigate the global dynamics of the Lotka-Volterra systems with anti-symmetric interactions. We prove that the dynamics of system can be determined by some associated linear inequalities, which are of independent interest in linear programming. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to the linear inequalities are established. When the solutions of the linear inequalities exist, the solutions of corresponding Lotka-Volterra systems are uniformly bounded, and the persistence and extinction of any species can be classified by an index set, which is uniquely determined by the linear inequalities. When the solutions of linear inequalities do not exist, the solutions of the Lotka-Volterra systems are unbounded. As an application, we analyze the three-species case and classify the long-time behaviors of the solutions to the system.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with positive steady-state solutions of a class of cross-diffusion systems which arise in the study of the predator–prey systems with prey-taxis. Under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, we use the theory of fixed point index in positive cones to establish the existence of positive steady-state solutions. By analyzing two related eigenvalues, we further obtain the coexistence region with respect to the growth rates of two species and characterize the differences of coexistence region if different predator–prey interactions are adopted. Additionally, we investigate the limiting behavior of positive steady-state solutions as some parameter tends to infinity. Our results not only generalize the previously known one, but also present some new conclusions.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish some sufficient conditions ensuring the existence and uniqueness of positive (Bohr) almost periodic solutions to a class of semilinear evolution equations of the form: u′(t)=A(t)u(t)+f(t,u(t)),t∈R . We assume that the family of closed linear operators (A(t))t∈R on a Banach lattice X satisfies the "Acquistapace–Terreni" conditions, so that the associated evolution family is positive and has an exponential dichotomy on R . The nonlinear term f , acting on certain real interpolation spaces, is assumed to be almost periodic only in a weaker sense (i.e., in Stepanov's sense) with respect to t , and Lipschitzian in bounded sets with respect to the second variable. Moreover, we prove a new composition result for Stepanov almost periodic functions by assuming only continuity of f with respect to the second variable (see the condition Lemma 1‐(ii)). Finally, we provide an application to a system of Lotka–Volterra predator–prey type model with diffusion and time–dependent parameters in a generalized almost periodic environment.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following Lotka-Volterra competition system with dynamical resources and density-dependent diffusion in a bounded smooth domain [Formula: see text] with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, where the parameters [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) are positive constants, m(x) is the prey's resource, and the dispersal rate function [Formula: see text] satisfies the the following hypothesis: [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] on [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. When m(x) is constant, we show that the system (*) with has a unique global classical solution when the initial datum is in functional space [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text]. By constructing appropriate Lyapunov functionals and using LaSalle's invariant principle, we further prove that the solution of (*) converges to the co-existence steady state exponentially or competitive exclusion steady state algebraically as time tends to infinity in different parameter regimes. Our results reveal that once the resource w has temporal dynamics, two competitors may coexist in the case of weak competition regardless of their dispersal rates and initial values no matter whether there is explicit dependence in dispersal or not. When the prey's resource is spatially heterogeneous (i.e. m(x) is non-constant), we use numerical simulations to demonstrate that the striking phenomenon "slower diffuser always prevails" (cf. Dockery et al. in J Math Biol 37(1):61-83, 1998; Lou in J Differ Equ 223(2):400-426, 2006) fails to appear if the non-random dispersal strategy is employed by competing species (i.e. either [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] is non-constant) while it still holds true if both d(w) and [Formula: see text] are constant.

Abstract:Seasonality frequently occurs in population models, and the corresponding seasonal patterns have been of great interest to scientists. This paper is concerned with traveling waves to a time-periodic bistable Lotka-Volterra competition system with nonlocal dispersal. We first establish the existence, uniqueness and stability of traveling wave solutions for this system. Then, by utilizing comparison principle and the stability property, the relationship among the bistable wave speed, the asymptotic propagation speeds of the associated monotone subsystems and the speed of upper/lower solutions is obtained. Next, explicit sufficient conditions for positive and negative bistable wave speeds are derived. Our explicit results are derived by constructing particular upper/lower solutions with specific asymptotical behaviors, which can be seen as case studies shedding light on further studies and improvements. Finally, the theoretical results are corroborated under weak conditions by direct simulations of the underlying time-periodic system with nonlocal dispersal. The combined impact of competition, dispersal and seasonality on the invasion direction has shed new light on the modelings and analysis of population competition and species invasion in heterogeneous media.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the almost periodic dynamics of an impulsive multispecies Lotka–Volterra competition system with time delays on time scales. By establishing some comparison theorems of dynamic equations with impulses and delays on time scales, a permanence result for the model is obtained. Furthermore, based on the permanence result, by studying the Lyapunov stability theory of impulsive dynamic equations on time scales, we establish the existence and uniformly asymptotic stability of a unique positive almost periodic solution of the system. Finally, we give an example to show the feasibility of our main results, and our example also shows that the continuous time system and its corresponding discrete time system have the same dynamics. Our results of this paper are completely new even if for both the case of the time scale and the case of the time scale . Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:In this paper, a two-species competitive model with Michaelis–Menten type harvesting in the first species is studied. We have made a detailed mathematical analysis of the model to describe some important results that may be produced by the interaction of biological resources. The permanence, stability, and bifurcation (saddle-node bifurcation and transcritical bifurcation) of the model are investigated. The results show that with the change of parameters, two species could eventually coexist, become extinct or one species will be driven to extinction and the other species will coexist. Moreover, by constructing the Lyapunov function, sufficient conditions to ensure the global asymptotic stability of the positive equilibrium are given. Our study shows that compared with linear harvesting, nonlinear harvesting can exhibit more complex dynamic behavior. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:The Lotka–Volterra predator–prey system x′ = x − xy, y′ = − y+xy is a good differential equation system for testing numerical methods. This model gives rise to mutually periodic solutions surrounding the positive fixed point (1,1), provided the initial conditions are positive. Standard finite-difference methods produce solutions that spiral into or out of the positive fixed point. Previously, the author [Roeger, J. Diff. Equ. Appl. 12(9) (2006), pp. 937–948], generalized three different classes of nonstandard finite-difference methods that when applied to the predator–prey system produced periodic solutions. These methods preserve weighted area; they are symplectic with respect to a noncanonical structure and have the property that the computed points do not spiral. In this paper, we use a different approach. We apply the Jacobian matrix procedure to find a fourth class of nonstandard finite-difference methods. The Jacobian matrix method gives more general nonstandard methods that also produce periodic solutions for the predator–prey model. These methods also preserve the positivity property of the solutions.

Abstract:In this Letter, for a general class of delayed periodic Lotka–Volterra systems, we prove some new results on the existence of positive periodic solutions by Schauder's fixed point theorem. The global asymptotical stability of positive periodic solutions is discussed further, and conditions for exponential convergence are given. The conditions we obtained are weaker than the previously known ones and can be easily reduced to several special cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the existence of positive periodic solutions of generalized Leslie–Gower-type population models. Using the topological degree, we provide sufficient conditions to demonstrate the existence of positive periodic solutions to the considered models. It is interesting that the positive periodic solutions in this paper are general positive functions, not e exponential functions, which generalizes and improves the existing results. We note that due to the symmetrical property of periodic solutions, the results of this paper provide a deeper understanding of the periodic behavior of biological populations. Two numerical examples show the effectiveness of our main results.

Abstract:We are interested in the long time behavior of a two-type density-dependent biological population conditioned to non-extinction, in both cases of competition or weak cooperation between the two species. This population is described by a stochastic Lotka-Volterra system, obtained as limit of renormalized interacting birth and death processes. The weak cooperation assumption allows the system not to blow up. We study the existence and uniqueness of a quasi-stationary distribution, that is convergence to equilibrium conditioned to non extinction. To this aim we generalize in two-dimensions spectral tools developed for one-dimensional generalized Feller diffusion processes. The existence proof of a quasi-stationary distribution is reduced to the one for a $d$-dimensional Kolmogorov diffusion process under a symmetry assumption. The symmetry we need is satisfied under a local balance condition relying the ecological rates. A novelty is the outlined relation between the uniqueness of the quasi-stationary distribution and the ultracontractivity of the killed semi-group. By a comparison between the killing rates for the populations of each type and the one of the global population, we show that the quasi-stationary distribution can be either supported by individuals of one (the strongest one) type or supported by individuals of the two types. We thus highlight two different long time behaviors depending on the parameters of the model: either the model exhibits an intermediary time scale for which only one type (the dominant trait) is surviving, or there is a positive probability to have coexistence of the two species.
