Abstract:Network virtualization holds a great promise for next-generation network, because it enables sharing of physical infrastructure among different users/services, in a logical isolated way, to achieve higher efficiency and greater flexibility of resources. By using optical network of extremely large capacity, more services can be carried out, but that leads to increase in substrate failures. This problem can be addressed by using survivable virtual network embedding (SVNE), more commonly with single-path provisioning (SPP) than multipath provisioning (MPP), although the former consumes more resources. However, only a few schemes consider using one-to-multi node mapping in SVNE. Now, one-to-multi node mapping and MPP scheme can be easily implemented in SVNE for software defined network (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) technology. So, this paper investigates the feasibility of implementing the SVNE scheme, with MPP and one-to-multi node mapping, to achieve higher reliability and better efficiency in elastic optical network. This scheme considers four key points: 1) the number and resource requirement of physical nodes that carry one virtual node, 2) the spectrum requirement of each path of one virtual link, 3) the number of paths considering shared risk group, and 4) graph theory, which are used in the scheme. Three contrasting schemes are formulated as integer linear programming models and their simulation are carried out. The results show that the proposed survivable multipath virtual network embedding scheme against multiple failures, with SDN/NFV, achieves significant gain in terms of spectrum efficiency and survivability.

Abstract:As virtualization is becoming a promising way to support various emerging application, provisioning survivability to requested virtual networks (VN) in a resource efficient way is important. In this paper, we investigate the survivable VN embedding (SVNE) problem from a new perspective. First, we consider the failure dependent protection (FDP) in which each primary facility node would have a different backup facility node, as opposed to the Failure Independent Protection (FIP) which has been studied before, in order to provide the same degree of protection against a single node failure with less substrate resources. Secondly, we enhance the VN with additional computing and communication resources and design the Enhanced VN (or EVN) before embedding it to the substrate in order to further reduce the amount of substrate resources needed to survive a single facility node failure. The work is the first that combines the FDP with EVN design (FD-EVN) to explore a resource efficient solution to the SVNE problem. After presenting a binary quadratic programming (BQP) formulation of the FD-EVN design problem and a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation of the EVN embedding (EVNE) problem, we propose two heuristic algorithms for FD-EVN design, as well as an EVNE algorithm that explores primary and backup substrate resources sharing. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the solutions to the BQP/MILP formulation when possible, and the heuristics. The proposed FD-EVN approach has shown to be resource efficient and in particular, outperform other approaches in terms of request acceptance ratio and embedding cost, although as a tradeoff, requiring more service migration after failures.

Abstract:WDM optical networking technology is expected to facilitate bandwidth-intensive multicast application by establishing a "light-tree" which regards the source node as the root and all the destination nodes as the leaves. However, the existing multicast routing algorithms are time-consuming and the generated "light-trees" are very sensitive to failures, e.g., a single fiber cut can disrupt the information from transmitting to several terminals. In this paper, we propose a novel fast multicast algorithm with enhanced survivability (FMES), which applies a two-stage multicast routing approach, and employs a path protection scheme for each segment of the first stage tree. Analysis and experimental results show that FMES has the significant advantage of a much shorter running time than that in existing schemes, and this advantage can be enlarged in the distributed routing and signaling system of the coming intelligent optical networks. We also compare FMES with non-protection and full-protection schemes. It shows that the FMES scheme achieves the best trade-off between network survivability and resource-utilization. We illustrate our study with numerical experiments based on the real-life ChinaNet topology.

Abstract:We propose a novel virtual passive optical network (VPON) scheme syncretizing multiple subsystems for metro-access optical network, which reflects the characteristic of flat network and meets the demand of technology compatibility. In this scheme, in order to maximize the utilization of finite network resource, the threshold-based resource recycling and allocation mechanism supporting the reconfiguration and escalation of VPON is proposed. Finally, we conduct detailed simulations to research and analyze the performance and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Nowadays, cloud computing networks significantly benefit the deployment of new services and have become one infrastructure provider in the digital society. The virtual extensible local area network (VxLAN), which belongs to the network schemes to overlay Layer 2 over Layer 3, is one of the most popular methods to realize cloud computing networks. Though VxLAN partially overcomes the capacity limitation of its predecessor virtual local area network, it still faces several challenges like annoying signaling overhead during the multicast period and interrupted communication with a migrating virtual machine (VM). In this paper, we propose a new software defined network (SDN) based VxLAN network architecture. Based on this architecture, we address how we can deploy an intelligent center to enhance the multicast capability and facilitate the VM migration. Besides, we discuss the means to update the global information and guarantee the communication continuum. Finally, we use Mininet to emulate this SDN based VxLAN architecture and demonstrate effective load balancing results. In a word, this proposed architecture could provide a blueprint for future cloud computing networks.

Abstract:In this work, we study the availability-aware survivable virtual network embedding (A-SVNE) problem in optical interdatacenter networks that use wavelength-division multiplexing. With A-SVNE, we try to satisfy the availability requirement of each virtual component (i.e., a virtual link or a virtual node) in a virtual network. We first analyze the availability of a virtual component based on the availabilities of the substrate link(s) and node(s). Then, we formulate an integer linear programming model for the A-SVNE problem and propose several time-efficient heuristics. Specifically, we design two node mapping strategies: one is sequential selection using efficient weights defined by the availability information, while the other uses auxiliary graphs to transform the problem into a classical problem in graph theory, i.e., the maximum-weight maximum clique. Finally, we use extensive simulations to compare the proposed A-SVNE algorithms with existing ones in terms of the blocking probability, availability gap, and penalty due to service-level agreement violations, and the results indicate that our algorithms perform better.

Data Center Network Placement and Service Protection in All-Optical Mesh Networks

Abstract:Cloud services based on data center networks (DCNs) require a transmission infrastructure with high-capacity, low-latency, low-cost and high-availability, which can be offered by survivable optical networks. DCN placement is a fundamental issue in supporting cloud services in optical networks. It concerns not only the cost of providing cloud services, but also the service availability against failures via proper service replicas. In this paper, we jointly optimize DCN placement with service routing and protection to minimize the network cost, while ensuring fast protection of all services against a single link or server failure. An ILP (Integer Linear Program) is formulated to achieve optimal joint design. It integrates p-cycle (preconfigured protection cycle) for fast protection against a single link failure, and DCN replicas and fast service rerouting against a server failure. To make the design more scalable, a two-step heuristic is proposed for large-size networks. The first step separately solves the DCN placement and service routing problem in the failure-free scenario, and the second step takes fast service protection into account. The proposed design is validated by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:Airborne tactical networks (ATNs) are driving the promising development of Internet of battle Things (IoBT) by enabling efficient information sharing, which is impeded by the network ossification problem due to the tightly coupled network architecture. As a solution, network virtualization (NV) can solve the ossification problem by breaking the tight coupling between applications and network infrastructure for ATNs. With complex interference and malicious attacks, the application of NV is challenged by network failures when instantiating virtual networks on a shared substrate network, which is known as survivable virtual network embedding (SVNE). However, existing SVNE algorithms, mostly designed for wired networks, are not necessarily optimal for the virtualization of ATNs due to the complex wireless interference. To this end, a fault-tolerant SVNE algorithm, termed SVNE-FT, is proposed to recover virtual networks from single node failure (end or switching node failure) under the complex wireless interference. To end node failure, SVNE-FT adopts a novel node ranking approach to select reliable substrate nodes for virtual nodes and remaps the failed virtual nodes by releasing part of the substrate paths to improve the resource utilization. In addition, to switching node failure, it adopts the improved pre-configured cycle (p-Cycle) technology to augment the reliable link mapping with differentiated p-Cycles that protect switching node and reduce the resource consumption of backups. Numerical simulation results reveal that SVNE-FT outperforms typical and latest heuristic SVNE algorithms under the complex interference of ATNs. For instance, average acceptance ratio of virtual networks improves at least 12%.

Abstract:Network virtualization has been considered a promising approach for promoting heterogeneous services and mechanisms towards the next-generation network architectures, which can greatly improve the global utilization efficiency of network resources, and hence the capacity of service delivery. However, virtual network invulnerability has long been ignored and little research effort has been made. In this paper, we presented a novel virtual network restoration approach, MFP-VNMH, which could enhance the VN mapping and service restoration subject to the physical link failure in the physical substrate whilst avoiding the remapping of the overall VNs. The performance of proposed MFP-VNMH is assessed through extensive numerical experiments for a range of network scenarios in comparison with the overall VN remapping approach and the end-to-end link remapping approach. The result is encouraging and demonstrates its effectiveness and efficiency for VN mapping update and service restoration upon physical substrate failures.

Abstract:Based on the virtualization technique in optical networks, virtual transport network services (VTNS) has been introduced as a new kind of service in transport networks. With VTNS, transport providers are able to provide their customers entire virtual topologies instead of traditional end-to-end connections. This letter analyzes the new characteristics (i.e., multiple operators, diversified services) aiming at the survivability problem in virtualized optical transport networks, and proposes three novel protection schemes for VTNS against the new features. For the first time, VTNS with the proposed protection schemes are demonstrated on the flexi-grid optical networks testbed with commercial optical transport equipments. Additionally, the performances of the proposed protection schemes have been evaluated via simulations.

Abstract:Software-defined elastic optical networks (SD-EONs) provide operators more flexibility to customize their optical infrastructures dynamically. By leveraging infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), virtual SD-EONs (vSD-EONs) can be realized to further enhance the adaptivity of SD-EONs and shorten the time-to-market of new services. In this paper, we design and demonstrate the building and operating of quality-of-service (QoS) aware survivable vSD-EONs that are equipped with transparent data plane (DP) resiliency. Specifically, when slicing a vSD-EON, our network hypervisor (NHV) chooses to use "1:1" virtual link (VL) protection or on-demand VL remapping as the DP restoration scheme, according to the service-level agreement (SLA) between the vSD-EON's operator and the infrastructure provider (InP). Then, during an actual substrate link (SL) failure, the NHV realizes automatic DP restoration that is transparent to the controllers of vSD-EONs. We build a network testbed to demonstrate the creation of QoS-aware survivable vSD-EONs, the activation of lightpaths in the vSD-EONs to support upper-layer applications, and the automatic and simultaneous QoS-aware DP restorations during an SL failure. The experimental results indicate that our vSD-EON slicing system can build QoS-aware survivable vSD-EONs on-demand, operate them to set up lightpaths for carrying real application traffic, and facilitate differentiated DP restorations during SL failures to recover the vSD-EONs' services according to their SLAs.

Abstract:Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) has been introduced to improve the capacity of optical networks. In SDM optical networks, there are multiple cores/modes in each fiber link, and spectrum resources are multiplexed in both frequency and core/modes dimensions. Enabled by network virtualization technology, one SDM optical network substrate can be shared by several virtual networks operators. Similar with point-to-point connection services, virtual networks (VN) also need certain survivability to guard against network failures. Based on customers' heterogeneous requirements on the survivability of their virtual networks, this paper studies the shared protection based VN mapping problem and proposes a Minimum Free Frequency Slots (MFFS) mapping algorithm to improve spectrum efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can optimize SDM optical networks significantly in terms of blocking probability and spectrum utilization.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of survivable virtual optical network (VON) mapping against single link failure with shared backup path protection (SBPP) in elastic optical networks. We formulate this problem with an integer linear programming (ILP) model to minimize the resource consumption of both working and backup paths. A different dynamic cost model (DDCM) for each sharable frequency slot (FS) is proposed with the consideration of the flexibility and integrity of VON request. We also propose a shared protection VON mapping (SPVM) algorithm based on DDCM, together with a baseline algorithm for comparison. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm achieves near optimal results comparing with ILP solution in small-scale network, and also outperforms baseline scheme in terms of blocking probability, resource utilization and backup resource reservation in large-scale network.

Abstract:A novel modularized twin-ring wavelength division multiplexer access network is proposed in this paper. By originally designing the switch module and the exchange module, the central office and the remote nodes are formed respectively. This gives the network both modularity and scalability. By using twin-ring topology, the architecture of network is constructed. It makes the network not only have high reliability, but also support wavelength tetra-reuse. By simulation, the mentioned functions are demonstrated. The simulating results show the network has good performance.
