Abstract:Based on the previous research,a virtual network mapping algorithm with repeatable mapping over substrate nodes is put forward,in which,multiple virtual nodes in the same virtual network can be mapped to the same substrate node if there is enough resource capacity.That not only cuts down some virtual link mapping processes and reduces the mapping time,but also saves the substrate link cost and makes more virtual networks mapped.In addition,link splitting is introduced so that some low bandwidth resource can be used effectively to improve the mapping.Experiments show that new algorithm performs better in runtime,mapping percentage and mapping revenue.

Abstract:With the increasingly popular virtualization of both computing and networking resources in a distributed system (called a physical substrate), multiple virtual infrastructures (VIs) can share the physical resources of the underlying substrate, and accordingly even a single failure in the substrate can affect a large number of VIs and the services they offer. Thus, the problem of efficiently mapping a VI to a substrate while guaranteeing the VI's survivability in the event of failures in the substrate becomes important. In this paper, we study the survivable VI mapping problem to protect against link failures in the substrate. We first propose a solution based on traditional shared protection (survivable virtual infrastructure mapping algorithm, P-SVIMA), and then propose a novel VI node migration protection-based algorithm (MP-SVIMA) to minimize the computing and communication resource costs. The MP-SVIMA scheme takes advantage of the flexibility in where VI nodes are mapped in the substrate by migrating a VI node from the originally mapped physical location to a different location after a physical link fails in order to recover from link failures. We compare the efficiency of our solutions using simulations under various performance metrics.

Abstract:This paper proposes a Virtual Network Mapping algorithm for the unsplittable flow scenario, which maps virtual nodes and virtual links at the same phrase. We formulate the VN embedding problem as a 0-1 linear programming through substrate network augmentation, and then, based on the policy of divide and rule, we solve the model using linear programming, randomized and iterative method. Simulation experiments show that the proposed algorithm increases the acceptance ratio and the revenue while decreasing the cost incurred by the substrate network in the long run.

Abstract:As one of the challenges for network virtualization, virtual network embedding which maps Virtual network (VN) to the substrate network and allocates resources according to the requirements of VN in an efficient way has gained great attention. Existing algorithms generally make their decision according to the present available substrate network resource, especially bandwidth. This paper proposes a time-based VN embedding algorithm. A probability model is formulated to obtain the maximum probability that the available resources of substrate network can be used by succeeding VN requests. The probability is set as the weight of the node and the greedy algorithm is employed to embed the virtual node. The reciprocal of the probability is set as the weight of the link and the shortest path algorithm is employed to embed the virtual link. Simulation experiments show that the proposed algorithm increases the acceptance rate and the revenue compared to the existing algorithms.

Abstract:Network virtualization facilitates sharing and efficient utilization of computing and bandwidth resources of an underlying substrate network. As network virtualization becomes popular, it is important to efficiently map a virtual infrastructure (VI) onto a substrate network, such that the survivability of the former can be guaranteed against failures in the latter. In this paper, we study a virtualization layer approach to survivability, whereby the virtualization layer customizes a VI request with redundant nodes and links according to its reliability requirements and then passes limited information about the augmented VI to the physical layer, where the mapping of the augmented VI takes place. More specifically, we develop a flexible scheme to enhance the original VI graph with K redundant nodes, in order to fight against an arbitrary substrate node failure. In addition, a scenario-based component group (SBCG) concept is proposed to describe resource sharing of enhanced VI requests at the physical layer. We also develop an efficient heuristic that takes advantage of the limited information on SBCG to reduce costs when mapping the enhanced VI to the substrate network. The efficiency of the proposed solution is compared using extensive simulation under various performance metrics. It is shown that the K-redundant-node scheme with SBCG information is more cost efficient than the existing 1-redundant-node solution.

Abstract:Virtualization facilitates heterogeneous cloud applications to share the same physical infrastructure with admirable flexibility, while resource efficiency and survivability are critical concerns for virtual network embedding (VNE). As more and more internet applications migrate to the cloud, the resource efficiency and the survivability of VNs, such as single link failure or large-scale disaster survivability, have become crucial issues. Separating the VNE problem into node and link mapping sub-problems without coordination might cause a high embedding cost. This dissertation presents two independent approaches to solve the aforementioned challenges. First, we study two-stage coordinated survivable VNE (SVNE) problem and propose an adaptive path splitting based SVNE (APSS) scheme. We first develop a concise anchor node strategy to restrict the solution space of the candidate substrate nodes, which coordinates node mapping with link mapping to limit the distance spans of the virtual links. Then, we employ an adaptive path splitting policy to provide full protection against single-link failures with partial backup resource, and design an agile frequency slot windows choosing mechanism to mitigate the spectrum fragmentation for link resource efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed APSS scheme can achieve satisfactory performance in terms of spectrum utilization and blocking ratio. Second, we propose a synchronous evacuation strategy for VNs with dual virtual machines (VMs) inside a disaster risk zone (DRZ), which suffer higher risks than the VNs with single. The evacuation strategy exploits post-copy technique to sustain the online service alive and enhances synchronous VM migrations to shorten the dual-VM evacuation time. Numerical results show that the proposed strategy can outperform the best-effort scheme in terms of average and total evacuation times of dual-VMs.

Abstract:Network virtualization has been considered a promising approach for promoting heterogeneous services and mechanisms towards the next-generation network architectures, which can greatly improve the global utilization efficiency of network resources, and hence the capacity of service delivery. However, virtual network invulnerability has long been ignored and little research effort has been made. In this paper, we presented a novel virtual network restoration approach, MFP-VNMH, which could enhance the VN mapping and service restoration subject to the physical link failure in the physical substrate whilst avoiding the remapping of the overall VNs. The performance of proposed MFP-VNMH is assessed through extensive numerical experiments for a range of network scenarios in comparison with the overall VN remapping approach and the end-to-end link remapping approach. The result is encouraging and demonstrates its effectiveness and efficiency for VN mapping update and service restoration upon physical substrate failures.

Abstract:Recently network virtualization is considered as a powerful way to overcome the current ossification of Internet, and is viewed as the keystone of the next-generation network architecture. In network virtualization, virtual network (VN) embedding problem, which assigns virtual nodes and links to physical network, plays an important role. Due to the scarcity of physical resource, efficient and effective VN embedding schemes are necessary. Researchers usually narrow down the problem space with certain restrictions to propose efficient solutions, or pay more attention to improve the performance of link mapping stage. Though resources on physical nodes are also scarce, the node mapping stage is neglected. In order to better utilize resources on physical nodes, we develop a novel scheme with two-stage node mapping. In our scheme, physical resource migration of nodes makes node mapping more efficiently, and leads to a more flexible and reliable network virtualization environment. The simulations shows that our scheme increases the acceptance ratio of VN requests, and enhances the average revenue of physical network.

Abstract:SummaryCloud computing has become a new Internet application model, where network virtualization is recognized as an important technology for allowing multiple heterogeneous virtual networks (VNs) to coexist on a shared substrate network (SN). As demands in cloud computing increase, the scale of VN greatly increases as well, and providing an end‐to‐end SN to embed VNs in terms of scale is difficult. To utilize SN resources fully, we devise a topology‐aware Node‐Fusion algorithm, which is different from the traditional virtual network embedding (VNE) algorithms, for repeatable VNE over substrate nodes problem. We rank the resource of nodes through a novel solution by considering the CPU and bandwidth of adjacent link capacity and the number of adjacent links of each node as resources, and rank a node on the basis of resources. Furthermore, we embed several virtual nodes into the same substrate node together in accordance with Node‐Fusion interconnection value during the node mapping process, which can greatly improve the success ratio of the subsequent link mapping phase. Evaluation results confirm that Node‐Fusion outperforms traditional classical heuristics (Link‐opt, Node‐opt, and ORSTA), which are modified to fit into our model, with regard to acceptance ratio, long‐term revenue, long‐term cost, and revenue‐cost ratio.

Abstract:Network virtualization allows multiple virtual networks to coexist on a shared physical substrate infrastructure. As network virtualization becomes popular, the problem of efficiently mapping a virtual network while guaranteeing its survivability in the event of failures becomes increasingly important. In this paper, the reliability problem of virtual network is solved based on a node and link redundant backup strategy. We model the virtual network mapping problem as an integer linear programming and present a discrete particle swarm optimization based algorithm to solve the problem. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has higher recovery success ratio and can reduce backup bandwidth simultaneously.

Abstract:With the development of datacenter networks and network virtualization, facility-failure-proof survivable virtual network embedding (SVNE) has recently gained notable attention. In this work, we design novel location-constrained SVNE (LC-SVNE) approaches that consider the working and backup embeddings jointly and protect virtual networks against single-facility-failures efficiently. We first transform the survivable node mapping to a bipartite graph matching problem and solve it for effective resource sharing among working and backup facilities. Then, two survivable link mapping schemes are designed to minimize the bandwidth consumption of virtual links, by leveraging anycast- and multicast-based substrate routing scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed approaches outperform two existing ones on blocking probability and time-average revenue.

Abstract:Software-Defined Network architecture offers network virtualization through a hypervisor plane to share the same physical substrate among multiple virtual networks. However, for this hypervisor plane, how to map a virtual network to the physical substrate while guaranteeing the survivability in the event of failures, is extremely important. In this paper, we present an efficient virtual network mapping approach using optimal backup topology to survive a single link failure with less resource consumption. Firstly, according to whether the path splitting is supported by virtual networks, we propose the OBT-I and OBT-II algorithms respectively to generate an optimal backup topology which minimizes the total amount of bandwidth constraints. Secondly, we propose a Virtual Network Mapping algorithm with coordinated Primary and Backup Topology (VNM-PBT) to make the best of the substrate network resource. The simulation experiments show that our proposed approach can reduce the average resource consumption and execution time cost, while improving the request acceptance ratio of VNs.

Abstract:In network virtualization, virtual network embedding is mostly static, which maps each virtual link onto a single predictable path, thus offering a significant advantage for adversaries to eavesdrop or intercept a certain virtual network. However, existing works on multipath embedding just focus on performance and survivability, instead of maximizing the routing unpredictability to avoid link attacks. In this paper, we present a mutable virtual network embedding framework which maps each virtual link onto a set of substrate links with a game-theoretic optimal stochastic routing policy. Firstly, we model the virtual network embedding in the context of stochastic routing with its effectiveness quantified by game theory. Then, in node mapping algorithm, we define a security capacity matrix to evaluate substrate nodes, thus overcoming two disadvantages of existing resource capacity metric. In link mapping algorithm, we work out the optimal stochastic routing policies with satisfying capacity, delay and cycle-free constraints. The simulation results indicate that our framework can significantly improve the probability that packets are not attacked, with little expense of request acceptance ratio and average routing hops.

Abstract:With the expansion of cloud computing, virtual network (VN) migration becomes the very perspective technology for saving energy, ensuring Service Level Agreements or improving the survivability of virtual networks in cloud networks. At present, the majority of research on the VN migration, however, are for saving energy or improving resource utilizations, and few of them for the entire virtual network migration for guaranteeing QoS or improving the survivability of virtual networks. Since the regional failure, network maintenance or QoS violation, the service provider generally needs to migrate the VN for guaranteeing the QoS or improving the survivability of virtual networks. In the paper, we research the live migration problem of the virtual network to optimize the virtual network migration performance. To efficient migrate virtual network, we present an effective VN migration method, VNM. To control the cost of migration or migration traffic, based on the VNM algorithm, we present an effective VN migration method with migration traffic control, VNM-MTC. We use two networks as substrate networks to simulate the performances of our presented algorithms. From the experiment, we can see that the total VN reconfiguration cost, total VN redeployment cost, total VN migration cost and blocking ratio of our presented algorithms are better than that of the contrast algorithm.

Abstract:In IP over WDM networks, a single failure in the WDM layer breaks down multiple IP links and may leave the virtual topology disconnected. This will make the restoration by the IP layer impossible, which must be avoided by suitable virtual topology design. In this paper, we focus on single-node failure and develop a Remove-Node Algorithm to map IP links on lightpaths in such a way that the IP topology remains connected after the failure of any node in the WDM topology. We prove the validity of the algorithm and give out simulation results at last.

Abstract:Network virtualization is a key technology that enables a substrate infrastructure to be shared by multiple virtual heterogeneous networks (VNs). Recent research of network virtualization typically focuses on designing a variety of methods to perform the mapping between the virtual and physical networks. Nevertheless, these related approaches and algorithms could either have good performance in building unicast service-oriented virtual networks or be applied to virtual multicast service-oriented networks. A limited number of studies have focused on the mapping problem in survivable hybrid virtual networks (HVNs), which is critical in considering both the multicast and unicast traffic of the same VN request. In this paper, we research the survivable HVN mapping problem while considering regional failures of the substrate network, and we posit an AI-based high-efficiency framework and algorithm to resolve this problem. Groups of simulations are conducted under different scenarios and compared with the existing approach to evaluate the framework and algorithms proposed in this paper. The simulation results demonstrate that the performance of our approach is superior to that of the existing approach.

Abstract:A virtual network (VN) contains a collection of virtual nodes and links assigned to underlying physical resources in a network substrate. VN migration is the process of remapping a VNs logical topology to a new set of physical resources to provide failure recovery, energy savings, or defense against attack. Providing VN migration that is transparent to running applications is a significant challenge. Efficient migration mechanisms are highly dependent on the technology deployed in the physical substrate. Prior work has considered migration in data centers and in the PlanetLab infrastructure. However, there has been little effort targeting an SDN-enabled wide-area networking environment - an important building block of future networking infrastructure. In this work, we are interested in the design, implementation and evaluation of VN migration in GENI as a working example of such a future network. We identify and propose techniques to address key challenges: the dynamic allocation of resources during migration, managing hosts connected to the VN, and flow table migration sequences to minimize packet loss. We find that GENI's virtualization architecture makes transparent and efficient migration challenging. We suggest alternatives that might be adopted in GENI and are worthy of adoption by virtual network providers to facilitate migration.
