Abstract:Simultaneous removal of low concentration formaldehyde (HCHO) and ozone byproduct was investigated in the gaseous VUV (vacuum ultraviolet) photocatalysis by using noble metal modified TiO2 films. Noble metal (Pt, Au, or Pd) nanoparticles were deposited on TiO2 films with ultrafine particle size and uniform distribution. Under 35 h VUV irradiation, the HCHO gas (ca. 420 ppbv) was dynamically degraded to a level of 10~45 ppbv without catalyst deactivation, and over 50% O3 byproduct was in situ decomposed in the reactor. However, under the same conditions, the outlet HCHO concentration remained at 125~178 ppbv in the O3 + UV254 nm photocatalysis process and 190~260 ppbv in the UV254 nm photocatalysis process. And the catalyst deactivation also appeared under UV254 nm irradiation. Metallic Pt or Au could simultaneously increase the elimination of HCHO and ozone, but the PdO oxide seemed to inhibit the HCHO oxidation in the UV254 nm photocatalysis. Deposition of metallic Pt or Au reduces the recombination of h+/e− pairs and thus increases the HCHO oxidation and O3 reduction reactions. In addition, adsorbed O3 may be partly decomposed by photogenerated electrons trapped on metallic Pt or Au nanoparticles under UV irradiation.
Vacuum Ultraviolet Photocatalytic Degradation of Formaldehyde and Ozone Decomposition by Au/TiO2 Nanocomposite Film.

Abstract:To increase VUV (vacuum ultraviolet) photocatalytic efficiency for removing formaldehyde and decomposing its byproduct,i.e.ozone (O3),Au nanoparticles was supported on TiO2 nanocomposite film with low-temperature adsorption method.Three methods,i.e.UV254nm photocatalysis (TiO2/UV),VUV photolysis (VUV) and VUV photocatalysis (TiO2/VUV) were compared to degrade low concentration formaldehyde in the gas phase.The results showed that the removal ratio of formaldehyde in the TiO2/VUV process was much higher than that in the TiO2/UV or VUV photolysis process.Deposition of Au nanoparticles on TiO2 significantly improved the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes.Accordingly,in the VUV photocatalysis,Au/TiO2 not only increased the removal ratio of formaldehyde,but also significantly decomposed ozone.The concentration of residual O3 was decreased 32%.Moreover,Au/TiO2 film was stable in the VUV photocatalysis process.
Photocatalytic Degradation of Low Concentration Formaldehyde and Simultaneous Elimination of Ozone By-Product Using Palladium Modified TiO2 Films under UV254+185nm Irradiation

Abstract:Simultaneous elimination of formaldehyde and O3 by-product was investigated in the UV254+185nm photocatalysis with a continuous flow mode using palladium modified TiO2 films (Pd-TiO2). Formaldehyde (HCHO) was introduced at a low concentration (ca. 450ppbv), typical of polluted indoor environments. Pd nanoparticles, deposited via an electrostatic self-assembly method, had uniform distribution on TiO2 films with an average size of 3–4nm. Under UV254+185nm irradiation, the steady state concentration of HCHO was reduced to 10–50ppbv for a long irradiation period (>30h), and catalyst deactivation was not observed. Modification of TiO2 with palladium could simultaneously increase the conversion of HCHO and O3, especially at the high RH level, showing the excellent moisture-resistant behaviors. At the Pd loading of 0.3–0.4μgcm−2, the O3 conversion ratio increased over 3 times compared to pure TiO2. XPS analysis exhibited that PdO on the TiO2 was oxidized to mixture palladium oxides PdOx(x>1) under UV254+185nm irradiation. Due to high electron affinity of formed PdO2, the photogenerated electrons could be trapped by PdOx, thus improving the separation of e−/h+ pairs. As the reduction of PdO2 and oxidation of PdO coexisted, the PdOx could be dynamically stabilized, thus increasing the photoactivity of Pd-TiO2. Under UV254+185nm irradiation, the ozone might be decomposed on the Pd-TiO2 via two different routes, i.e., photocatalytic reduction of O3 on exposed TiO2 and decomposition of O3 on PdOx particles involved with UV irradiation and trapped electrons.
TiO2/Schwertmannite nanocomposites as superior co-catalysts in heterogeneous photo-Fenton process.

Abstract:The heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction is an effective technique in combating organic contaminants for both soil and water remediation, and extensive studies have focused on enhancing its efficiency and reducing its costs. In this work, we developed novel photo-Fenton catalysts by simply milling commercially available TiO2 (P25) with Schwertmannite (Sh), a natural iron-oxyhydroxysulfate nanomineral. We expect that the photo-generated electrons from TiO2 could continuously migrate to Sh, which then could enhance the separation of electron-hole pairs on TiO2 and accelerate the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) on Sh, leading to high degradation efficiency of the target organic contaminants. SEM and TEM results showed the distribution of TiO2 on Sh surface for the nanocomposites (TiO2/Sh). Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the much higher content of Fe(II) was determined on TiO2/Sh than on Sh via a common method in the iron ore, and the consumption of H2O2 and the production of •OH were more significant in the TiO2/Sh system than those in the TiO2 and Sh systems. These results well support our hypothesis that the photo-generated electrons could migrate from TiO2 to Sh on the composites, and can also explain the much higher degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) in the TiO2/Sh system. Besides, TiO2/Sh had lower Fe dissolution as compared with Sh, and retained high catalytic stability after four repeated cycles. Above merits of the TiO2/Sh composites, in combining with their simple synthesis method and low-cost property, indicated that they should have promising applications as heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) originating from diverse sources with complex compositions pose threats to both environmental safety and human health. Photocatalytic treatment of VOCs has garnered attention due to its high efficacy at room temperature. However, the intricate photochemical reaction generates ozone (O3), causing secondary pollution. Herein, our work developed a novel "synergistic effect" system for photocatalytic co-treatment of VOCs and O3 secondary pollution. Under the optimized reactor conditions simulated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), MgO-loaded g-C3N4 composites (MgO/g-C3N4) were synthesized as efficient catalysts for the photocatalytic synergistic treatment process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, characterization, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests revealed that the addition of MgO reduced the band gap of g-C3N4, and increased O3 molecule adsorption in the composites, efficiently harnessing the synergistic effect of O3 to generate a significant quantity of reactive oxygen radicals, thereby facilitating the removal of VOCs and O3. This study provides new insights for simultaneous elimination of VOCs and O3 secondary pollution by a photocatalytic process.

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of gaseous formaldehyde for 35 h was performed using Pt-TiO2 film in the following irradiation systems: UV254 nm, O3+UV254 nm, and UV254+185 nm. Concurrent improvements in formaldehyde degradation and O3 removal were achieved by modifying TiO2 with Pt nanoparticles, resulting in a 3.13.4-fold O3 elimination increase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the Pt-TiO2 film was carried out to assess the electronic states of the Pt nanoparticles and accumulated organic species. The deconvoluted C 1s and O 1s XPS spectra revealed that the content of carbonyl and carboxyl groups on Pt-TiO2 and degree of catalyst deactivation in the systems studied decreased in the following order: UV254 nm > O3+UV254 nm > UV254+185 nm. Metallic Pt0 was oxidized to a mixture of PtOads and Pt4+ species under O3+UV254 nm and UV254+185 nm irradiation owing to the presence of O3 and hydroxyl radicals, but remained stable under UV254 nm irradiation. Pt species at higher oxidation states can act as electron trapping centers, and improve the photocatalytic activity of Pt-TiO2 and provide reactive sites for O3 decomposition under UV irradiation, resulting in a faster O3 removal rate than that displayed by TiO2. The XPS studies provided valuable information to elucidate the beneficial role of Pt species and the reduction of catalyst deactivation under UV254+185 nm irradiation.

Abstract:Noble metal nanoclusters/oxides have been attracting close attention in heterogeneous catalysis due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, due to the effect of the Schottky heterojunction, the deposited particles are easy to aggregate, and the size is difficult to control. In this work, we report a surface-confined photodeposition process to load ultrafine noble nanoclusters on semiconductor oxides, e.g., titanium oxide (TiO2), in a fluidized bed (F method). Different from the traditional photodeposition in solution (L method), the metal precursors which are absorbed on the semiconductor are difficult to migrate via the F method, therefore effectively inhibiting the agglomeration of nanoparticles. Noble metal nanoclusters with a uniform size smaller than 2 nm are obtained. In the model reaction of the catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO), Pt/TiO2 with an ultralow loading amount (0.08 wt% Pt) showed excellent performance for the catalytic oxidation of HCHO at room temperature, which is benefited from the small and uniform size of nanoclusters. This work brings an effective strategy in the fabrication of size-controlled noble metals on oxide supports for heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are omnipresent in the sphere of human industrial, harboring latent adverse consequences for health and the ecological system. The photothermal catalytic oxidation of VOCs is an advanced integrated technology that harnesses the combined effects of light and heat energy to enhance the efficiency of VOCs degradation. Herein, a bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) was synthesized with the incorporation of Ce into the UiO-66-NH2(Zr) (i.e., UNH(Zr)), UiO-66-NH2(Zr2Ce) (i.e., UNH(Z2C)), which was achieved with Ce atom substituting for a portion of Zr atom within the Zr-oxo clusters. Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are integrated with MOFs to form composites using the dual-solvent method. Ce-oxo fulfills a bifunctional role: it not only facilitates the enhancement of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), but also establishes interaction with Pt NPs. Ce-oxo mediates an enhancement of electron density on Pt NPs. This phenomenon enhances the adsorption and activation of oxygen, significantly boosting the photocatalytic performance for toluene degradation, as demonstrated by a reduction of 30℃ for complete mineralization of toluene as compared to that of Pt@UiO-66-NH2(Zr) (i.e., PUNH(Zr)). This study potentially offers new insights into the relationship between electron transfer effects in bimetallic MOF-based catalysts and their efficient catalytic performance for VOCs degradation.
Fluorinated TiO2 Coupling with Α-Mno2 Nanowires Supported on Different Substrates for Photocatalytic VOCs Abatement under Vacuum Ultraviolet Irradiation

Abstract:The particular role of fluorine (F) doping in the photocatalytic activity of nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) towards toluene degradation was systematically studied. TiO2 nanosheet catalysts doped with different amounts of F- (denoted by F-TiO2) were synthesized by hydrothermal method. For comparison, calcination was performed on the catalyst to remove F-.. The photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of toluene over F-TiO2 was found to be much higher than those of TiO2 and commercial P25 under the irradiation of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light, with a high toluene degradation efficiency of about 90 %. Moreover, the toluene degradation efficiency increased to 96 % with the addition of only 1 wt% alpha-MnO2 nanowires, and the residual ozone (O-3) in the system can be completely eliminated. In addition, four different substrates were explored for catalyst coating to facilitate the operation and minimize catalyst loading, which can provide a promising strategy for practical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) abatement in industrial applications.
Study of Self-Cleaning and Low-Emission Properties of FTO/TiO2 Composite films

Abstract:TiO2 films on the FTO (SnO2:F) coated glass substrates were prepared through spin coating via a sol-gel method. The FTO/TiO2 double-layer composite films were characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-Vis, and FTIR. The results demonstrate that the best photocatalytic activity of FTO/TiO2 composite films is achieved when TiO2 film thickness is about 210 nm. The water contact angle values of FTO/TiO2 composite films decrease with the increase of the UV irradiation exposure time of the films. FTO/TiO2 composite films have better hydrophilic after UV irradiation. The FTO substrates are protected by TiO2 layer and the composite films still retain a certain low-emission property after heat treatment. When the thickness of TiO2 film is about 210 nm, the composite films have both self-cleaning property and low-emission property.

Abstract:The TiO2/diatomite composite was synthesized through a mild hydrolysis of titanyl sulfate. The prepared composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the anatase TiO2 nanopartilces anchored on the surface of diatomite with Ti-O-Si bonds between diatomite and TiO2. The photodegradation of gaseous formaldehyde under UV irradiation by the TiO2/diatomite composite was studied under various operating conditions, including relative humidity, illumination intensity and catalyst amount, which have significant influence on the degradation process. The TiO2/diatomite composite exhibited better photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2, which could be attributed to the favorable nanoparticles dispersibility and strong formaldehyde adsorption capacity. In addition, the composite exhibited outstanding reusability over five cycles. The TiO2/diatomite composite shows great promising application foreground in formaldehyde degradation. Study on the Decomposition Mechanism of Formaldehyde and Ozone Byproduct in the Presence of MnOx-TiO2 Catalyst under UV185+254nm Irradiation

Abstract:To increase the efficiency of simultaneous removal of formaldehyde and ozone byproduct under 185nm VUV(vacuum ultraviolet) irradiation,TiO2 supported manganese oxide catalyst(MnOx-TiO2) was synthesized and used as photocatalyst.The conversion rate of HCHO and O3 byproduct significantly increased from 44.7% and 38.7% for TiO2 to 77.5% and 96.8% for MnOx-TiO2,respectively.To elucidate the decomposition mechanism of HCHO and O3 on the MnOx-TiO2 under VUV irradiation,the decomposition rates of HCHO and O3 under VUV irradiation and in dark condition(added O3) were compared,and the photocatalytic degradation of HCHO on the MnOx-TiO2 under UV254nm irradiation was also investigated.The results indicated that the HCHO was mainly oxidized via homogeneous oxidation with active oxygen species and heterogeneous catalytic oxidation with ozone on the MnOx surface.Only less than 10% HCHO could be photocatalytically degraded on the MnOx-TiO2 under UV245nm irradiation.The O3 byproduct was mainly removed via thermal catalytic decomposition on the MnOx surface.The stability of MnOx-TiO2 to catalytically decompose O3 was greatly improved when the MnOx surface was irradiated with VUV light.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) that were deposited onto a TiO2 film on the simultaneous removal of toluene and ozone byproduct during 254nm ultraviolet and 185nm vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation. The uniform Pd NPs that were deposited onto the TiO2 film via an electrostatic method showed a high activity for toluene and ozone conversion. Pd NPs with the smallest mean size (1.9±0.7nm) exhibited the highest turnover frequency (TOF). However, the Pd–TiO2 film prepared with an immersion time of 10min exhibited the highest activity for both toluene and ozone conversion because of the relatively small size and high density of the as-deposited Pd NPs. Compared with the direct VUV photolysis and the TiO2/VUV photocatalytic processes, the Pd–TiO2/VUV process exhibited a better performance in degrading toluene over a range of concentrations with a short retention time (5.7s), and 90% of the ozone generated by 185nm VUV was simultaneously decomposed. In addition, approximately 94.1% of the converted toluene was mineralized into CO2 and CO, and only a small amount of degradation intermediates, such as benzaldehyde and formic acid, were detected in the Pd–TiO2/VUV process with a total yield less than 2%.
Research on degradation of formaldehyde in aqueous solution by combined photocatalysis and ozonation

Abstract:The degradation effects of low concentration formaldehyde in aqueous solution by three photochemical methods(UV/O_3,TiO_2/UV,TiO_2/UV/O_3) were compared,and the effects of initial pH,formaldehyde concentration and ozone addition rate on the formaldehyde degradation by TiO_2/UV/O_3 were studied.The results show that the degradations of formaldehyde in the three processes-UV/O_3 TiO_2/UV,TiO_2/UV/O_3,follow the apparent first-order reaction kinetics.The rate constant of TiO_2/UV/O_3 is larger than sum of those of TiO_2/UV and UV/O_3,which indicates a synergistic effect of photocatalysis and ozonation.The effect of pH on formaldehyde degradation by TiO_2/UV/O_3 can be ignored.The rate constant decreases with the increase of initial concentration of formaldehyde,while the absolute removal amount of formaldehyde increases with the increase of its initial concentration. The rate constant increases with the increase of ozone addition rate.Formic acid is identified as the main intermediate product during formaldehyde degradation;however,formic acid is quickly degraded and mineralized during the reaction,indicating that TiO_2/UV/O_3 is a safe and effective method to remove formaldehyde.
Performance of an innovative VUV-PCO purifier with nanoporous TiO 2 film for simultaneous elimination of VOCs and by-product ozone in indoor air

Abstract:An innovative vacuum ultraviolet photocatalytic oxidation (VUV-PCO) air purifier, consisting of a photocatalytic unit bearing nanoporous TiO2 film, an ozone removal unit bearing Mn-Fe catalyst and a radial fan, was designed and constructed. The performance of the VUV-PCO air purifier in simultaneous elimination of VOCs and O3 by-product was, for the first time, evaluated in a sealed actual room. The evaluation was conducted in both intermittent on/off and continuous operations. The results illustrated that the air purifier had high efficiency in removing formaldehyde and moderate efficiency in removing benzene, toluene, ofm-xylene, ortho-xylene, pentanal, octanal and nonanal, which were released from particleboard into the sealed room. During the removal of formaldehyde decomposition and TVOC in intermittent three-time on/off operation, the air purifier exhibited good stability. During the operation without heating, the air purifier had high formaldehyde and TVOC removal efficiencies, reaching values of about 48.00% and 78.71%, respectively after 90 min. During the continuous operation, the air purifier was able to continuously and effectively remove formaldehyde, benzene homologues, aldehyde and ketone compounds, while the ozone removal unit was able to effectively eliminate ozone generated during VUV photocatalysis. The removal of TVOC by 38.25% was reached after 240 min. In addition, heating the ozone removal unit was found to not only accelerate the release of VOCs from particleboard, but also promote the decomposition of ozone. The ozone removal unit operated with heating was able to reduce ozone content from 250 to 75 ppb.

Abstract:The adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde on the pure TiO 2 under dry and humid conditions were studied by in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was found that the formaldehyde molecules can be adsorbed on the hydroxyl groups on the TiO 2 surface via hydrogen bonding. With UV irradiation, the adsorbed formaldehyde rapidly converts to the formate species even on the pure TiO 2 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. In the dry environment, the superoxide radical anion O 2 − •, formed by adsorbed oxygen reacting with electrons, is suggested to play an important role in the formaldehyde oxidation. The introduction of water vapor provides a large amount of water and hydroxyl groups on the catalyst surface. Oxidation of water and hydroxyl groups by the photogenerated holes produces very active OH• radicals, which take part in the redox reactions and improve significantly the mineralization rate of formaldehyde on the TiO 2 due to its high redox potential. Abstract:A novel photo-catalytic oxidation method using ultraviolet (UV) and iron-loaded titanium dioxide (Fe/TiO2) catalyst was developed to remove NO from the flue gas, by which the removal efficiency of 53.4% was achieved without extra oxidant, and the efficiencies were 79.5% and 93.6% when 2 wt% and 4 wt% H2O2 were used, respectively. Increasing temperature and O2 concentration could facilitate the NO removal; neutral/alkaline solution and UV wavelength of 185 nm were more effective in removing NO, while the excess SO2 and gas flow rate were not conducive to remove NO. Besides, the NO removal mechanism was preliminarily speculated, in which •OH and O3 were determined to be the main oxidizing species in the photolysis and photo-catalysis of H2O/O2, the radicals were also formed in the catalysis of photo-generated H2O2 by Fe/TiO2, and the main removal product was identified as NO3 − by ion chromatography (IC). Meanwhile, the stability and reuse of catalyst were investigated by the recycling test.

Abstract:Photocatalysis was combined with O3 (O3-PCO) for better destruction performance of formaldehyde and toluene. It is of significance to study the stability of O3-PCO process since it is essential to the application of O3-PCO technology. The present work investigated the mechanism of enhanced performance and improved stability in the O3-PCO process under different operating conditions (e.g., humidity and initial O3 concentration). Results indicated that O3 improved remarkably the removal efficiency of formaldehyde and toluene with increased photocatalyst durability. The O3-PCO process exhibited excellent stability during the variation of humidity and initial O3 concentration. O3-PCO process has enhanced performance because it comprises more sub-processes (e.g., UV/O3 and O3/TiO2) for destroying pollutants than the PCO process alone does.
Improvement of water resistance by Fe2O3/TiO2 photoelectrocatalysts for formaldehyde removal: experimental and theoretical investigation

Abstract:TiO2-based photocatalysts are a potential technology for removing indoor formaldehyde (CHOH) owing to their strong photooxidation ability. However, their photooxidation performance is generally weakened when suffering from the competitive adsorption of H2O. In a method inspired by the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to generate intermediates with hydroxyl radicals on the anode electrode catalysts, an electric field was employed in this research and applied to the photooxidation of CHOH to prevent the competitive adsorption of H2O. Additionally, 0.5-5% Fe2O3 decorated TiO2 was employed to improve the photoelectrocatalytic activity. The influence of an electric field on hydroxyl-radical production was investigated by both density functional theory (DFT) with direct-imposed dipole momentum and photoelectrocatalytic experimental tests. The surface characterization of the photocatalysts, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), was conducted. DFT results show that a positive electric field with a strength of 0.05 Å/V was more favorable to produce hydroxyl on Fe2O3/TiO2(010) than was a negative electric field. Fe2O3 decoration can significantly boost hydroxyl formation, resulting from a decrease in the binding energy between the Fe of Fe2O3 and the oxygen and hydrogen atoms of H2O. The dissociated hydrogen atom of the H2O preferentially remained on the catalysts' surface rather than being released into the gas flow. The experimental results demonstrated that applying 150 V could not directly enhance the photooxidation of CHOH by either TiO2 or Fe2O3/TiO2 but that it could relieve the H2O inhibitory effect by more than 10% on the Fe2O3/TiO2.
