Abstract:Considerable effort has been applied to the development of new processes and catalysts for cellulose conversion to valuable platform chemicals. Isosorbide is among the most interesting products as it can be applied as a monomer and building block for the future replacement of fossil resource-based products. A sustainable method of isosorbide production from cellulose is presented in this work. The strategy relies on a bifunctional Ru catalyst supported on mesoporous niobium phosphate in a H2 atmosphere under pressure without further addition of any soluble acid. Over 50 % yield of isosorbide with almost 100 % cellulose conversion can be obtained in 1 h. The large surface area, pore size, and strong acidity of mesoporous niobium phosphate promote the hydrolysis of cellulose and dehydration of sorbitol; additionally, the appropriate size of the supported Ru nanoparticles avoids unnecessary hydrogenolysis of sorbitol. Under a cellulose/catalyst mass ratio of 43.3, the present bifunctional catalyst could be stably used up to six times, with its mesoporous structure well preserved and without detectable Ru leaching into the reaction solution.

Abstract:As a crucial bio-based platform chemical, the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from the abundant substrate cellulose has garnered significant attention. However, tedious reaction steps are inevitable because of the complex tandem conversions of dissolution, hydrolysis, and dehydration. Furthermore, due to the ultralow solubility of cellulose, harsh reaction conditions are inevitable, which can exacerbate HMF degradation. To this end, we investigated the structural changes in microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) after its dissolution and regeneration in various dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to clarify the mechanisms underlying its dissolution. The results revealed that the highly crystalline cellulose I in MCC was converted into amorphous cellulose II after treatment with DMSO/tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAC), which led to the complete dissolution of MCC. Accordingly, a dissolution-catalysis coupling reaction strategy was proposed for converting MCC to HMF via a one-pot method in DMSO/TEAC, simultaneously reducing the number of steps necessary for the reaction and achieving mild reaction conditions. In addition, the pathway for the one-pot reaction was clarified by analyzing the intermediate yields. The combination of AlCl3 as a catalyst and DMSO/ TEAC resulted in a notable MCC conversion of 93.3 wt% and a high HMF yield of 53.1%. Remarkably, the reaction conditions employed in this study (130 degrees C, 1 h) were milder in terms of shorter reaction times and lower temperatures than those reported in most current literature. This was attributed to the complete dissolution of MCC resulting from decrystallization. Therefore, the proposed reaction strategy enabled the efficient production of HMF from cellulose.

Abstract:The conversion of biomass to functional hydrochar based catalysts for sustainable biorefinery application is critical but still challenging. In this study, mild hydrothermal treatment combined with limited oxygen calcination was developed to treat corn stover and model components for directional preparation of hydrochar based catalysts. The prepared catalysts with various Al active species, exhibited high specific surface area, hierarchical pores, cross-linked carbon microspheres, and excellent catalytic and recycling performances for glucose isomerization. After optimization, a fructose yield of 35.1% (selectivity 77.4%) was obtained at 160 degrees C for 20 min and it was still more than 25% after the fourth recycling. The reaction kinetics for glucose isomerization was studied. This study established the physicochemical properties performance relationships of hydrochar based catalysts. The optimized hydrothermal and calcination steps were crucial to improving performance by regulating the active sites and catalyst structures. Moreover, nitrogen, silicon and other elements coupled together could form functional compounds, which is vital for improving the catalytic performance by the synergy between support and Al active center. Three components in corn stover played distinct roles in the catalysis step. This study provides a novel way for developing efficient and recyclable catalysts from biomass, which could be applied in biorefining. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:Selective and economic conversion of lignocellulosic biomass components to bio-based fuels and chemicals is the major goal of biorefineries, but low yields and selectivity for fuel precursors such as sugars, furanics, and lignin-derived monomers pose significant disadvantages in process economics. In this Minireview we summarize the existing protection strategies used in biomass chemocatalytic conversion processes and focus the discussions on the mechanisms, challenges, and opportunities of each strategy. We introduce a concept of using analogous methods to manipulate biomass catalytic conversion pathways during the upgrading of carbohydrates to fuels and chemicals. This Minireview may provide new insights into the development of selective biorefining processes from a different perspective, expanding the options for selective conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals.

Abstract:The industrial use of lignocellulose is limited by the copresence of C5 and C6 carbohydrates in this feedstock and the low selectivity of the corresponding catalytic conversion reaction, which collectively result in suboptimal product yields and necessitate energy-intensive purification/separation processes. Herein, we designed a composite dual-site Ru single-atom (SA)/ Ru nanoparticle (NP) catalyst for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) and the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) in a biphasic solvent (gamma-valerolactone (GVL)-saturated aqueous Na2CO3). Ru-SAs activated LA, while Ru-NPs boosted H2 dissociation to promote the hydrogenation of LA to GVL and ensured the efficient oxidation of HMF to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The SA/NP site design increased the oriented conversion efficiency of complex substrates, and the alternate hydrogenation-oxidation process ensured the stability of catalyst activity. The biphasic solvent system not only facilitated the mass transfer process but also allowed the spontaneous and non-energy-intensive separation of the produced GVL and FDCA. The obtained results pave the way for the design of SA/NP dual-site catalysts for the one-pot oriented conversion of complex substrates and the facile separation of products.
Cellulose Conversion to Polyols on Supported Ru Catalysts in Aqueous Basic Solution

Abstract:It is of great significance and challenge to achieve direct conversion of cellulose to specific polyols, e.g., ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. For such selective conversion, a novel one-pot approach was studied by combination of alkaline hydrolysis and hydrogenation on supported Ru catalysts. A wide range of bases including solid bases, e.g., Ca(OH)2 and La2O3, and phosphate buffers were examined in the cellulose reaction in water, and the cellulose conversions and polyol products depended largely on the basicity or pH values in the aqueous solutions. Ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, and especially 1,2,5-pentanetriol were obtained with selectivities of 15%, 14% and 22%, respectively, at 38% cellulose conversion at pH 8 in phosphate buffer solution. These preliminary results provide potentials for efficient conversion of cellulose to targeted polyols by using the advantages of bases.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of cellulose, the most abundant biomass on Earth, to chemicals in high yields remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report the marked change in the distribution of polyol products in the cellulose reaction on Ru/C and WO3/C, strongly depending on the competitive reactions of the glucose intermediate. WO3 crystallites not only promote, as a solid acid, the efficient hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, but also catalyze the selective cleavage of the C-C bonds in glucose and other C-6 sugar intermediates, leading to the formation of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, in competition with the sugar hydrogenation to the corresponding C-6 polyols (e.g. sorbitol) on Ru/C. The basic C support, behaving similar to other solid bases (i.e. MgO), catalyzes the isomerization of glucose into fructose, leading to the favored formation of propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol. Such strong dependence of the product distribution on the catalytic functions is clarified by the kinetic analysis of the three competitive reactions of glucose, including its hydrogenation, isomerization and C-C bond cleavage. Importantly, such kinetic analysis can predict the maximum selectivity ratio of propylene glycol to ethylene glycol, which is 2.5, for example, at 478 K under the reaction conditions in this work, corresponding to a maximum yield of propylene glycol of similar to 71%. These understandings shed new insights into the selective conversion of cellulose, which provides guidance for the rational design of catalyst functions and tuning of reaction parameters towards the controllable synthesis of specific products from cellulose. Abstract:Selective conversion of biomass into targeted molecules like polyols, especially, from cellulosic compounds, is being widely investigated as a sustainable process to produce biodiesel and bio-additives. The known process involves two steps, namely hydrolysis and hydrogenation. Thus, it requires two different catalytic materials or bifunctional catalysts. In this context, the present work reports a new catalytic approach based on the use of tandem catalysts, consisting of the combination of an acid solid catalyst (active for hydrolysis) and a supported metal catalyst (active for hydrogenation). Two different functionalized activated carbons and the resin Amberlyst 15 have been tested as solid acid catalysts, and Ru nanoparticles supported on the original activated carbon (SA) are the metal catalyst part of the tandem. All the tested tandem catalysts exhibited higher activity than the supported Ru catalyst did. The highest cellulose conversion and selectivity to sorbitol (70% and 86%, respectively) have been obtained over a novel tandem catalyst, which resulted from a physical mixture between a sulfuric acid modified SA carbon (SASu) and Ru loaded SA (Ru/SA), leading to a tandem catalyst (Ru/SA+SASu). This novel-designed tandem catalyst is reusable. Based on tandem catalysts with a solid-solid system combination, the adopted novel-designed catalytic approach is cost-efficient and sustainable, and can be considered promising for the green production of high-added-value chemicals.
Selective C3–C4 Cleavage via Glucose Photoreforming under the Effect of Nucleophilic Dimethyl Sulfoxide

Abstract:Biomass photorefinery is an ideal concept to help alleviate the current energy crisis and move toward carbon neutrality. Nevertheless, limited by the complex structure and multiple functional groups of biomass and its derivatives, current biomass photorefinery still suffers from inefficient substrate conversion and product selectivity. In this work, we rationally design polymeric carbon nitride (CN) by supramolecular self-assembly coupled with an organic copolymerization process method to convert glucose, a widely used model biomass molecule, into glycerol which is a value-added photorefinery product. This molecularly engineered photocatalyst improves the charge separation efficiency and significantly enhances visible light absorption. Importantly, ∼95% glucose conversion is achieved by the photogenerated reactive species of •O2 –, h+, and •OH under mild conditions with selective C3–C4 cleavage via a retro-aldol reaction pathway. The presence of O2 could provide favorable reactive oxygen species during the photoreforming process, and glycerol is the main product with >50% selectivity under the effect of nucleophilic dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which realizes the hydrogenation reaction of 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and glyceraldehyde. Our density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveals that DHA is the more favored intermediate compared to glyceraldehyde. This work demonstrates an example of using engineered photocatalysts and reaction systems for selective biomass valorization into biofuels/chemicals via a mild photocatalytic process.

Abstract:Sustainable synthesis of isosorbide, an important renewable platform chemical, from sorbitol and cellulose, has attracted increasing attention, but still remains challenging. Here, we have studied the effects of the acidity on the dehydration of sorbitol in water on a variety of solid acids, including zeolites, sulfonic materials, montmorillonite and mixed SiO2-Al2O3 oxide. These solid acids showed markedly different activities, which were found to be closely related to their strong Brønsted acid sites, while the weak Brønsted acid and Lewis acid sites were essentially inactive. Different from the other solid acids examined, H-ZSM-5 zeolites in a wide range of Si/Al molar ratios(25–300) exhibited superior selectivities to isosorbide in dehydration of sorbitol, consistent with the observed difference in their formation rates of the 1,4-sortbitan and 3,6-sorbitan intermediates. Kinetic studies on the sorbitol dehydration showed that 3,6-sorbitan, once it formed, dehydrated to isosorbide more readily than 1,4-sorbitan by a factor of 19, and the formation rate constant of 3,6-sorbitan on H-ZSM-5(Si/Al=25) was about three times higher than that of H-Beta(Si/Al=25). Such favorable formation of the reactive 3,6-sorbitan intermediate and the higher isosorbide selectivity on H-ZSM-5 appear to be induced by its confined pore structure composed of the paired 5-membered rings. H-ZSM-5 was also found to be efficient for the direct conversion of cellulose to isosorbide in coupling with Ru/C hydrogenation catalyst. This work provides fundamental insights into the acidity and pore structures that are helpful for the design of novel solid acids toward the efficient synthesis of isosorbide from the dehydration of sorbitol and even directly from the tandem reaction of cellulose.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of cellulose to liquid fuel and highly valuable platform chemicals remains a critical and challenging process. Here, bismuth-decorated β zeolite catalysts (Bi/β) were exploited for highly efficient hydrolysis and selective oxidation of cellulose to biomass-derived glycolic acid in an O2 atmosphere, which exhibited an exceptionally catalytic activity and high selectivity as well as excellent reusability. It was interestingly found that as high as 75.6% yield of glycolic acid over 2.3 wt% Bi/β was achieved from cellulose at 180 °C for 16 h, which was superior to previously reported catalysts. Experimental results combined with characterization revealed that the synergetic effect between oxidation active sites from Bi species and surface acidity on H-β together with appropriate total surface acidity significantly facilitated the chemoselectivity towards the production of glycolic acid in the direct, one-pot conversion of cellulose. This study will shed light on rationally designing Bi-based heterogeneous catalysts for sustainably generating glycolic acid from renewable biomass resources in the future.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) as a triply catalytic product is a value-added refining chemical in industry production. 5-HMF as biomass feedstock enables to be transformed into other high-value industrial compounds, such as 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA), 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan (BAMF), and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF). Hence, catalytic conversion of biomass into 5-HMF has been given much more attention by chemists. In this review, some latest studies about the conversion of cellulose to 5-HMF have been introduced systematically. Solid acids such as heterogeneous catalysts have been widely applied in the conversion of cellulose into 5-HMF. Therefore, some novel solid acids with Brønsted and/or Lewis acidic sites, such as sulfonated solid acids, carbon-based acids, and zeolite particles employed for biomass conversions are listed.

Abstract:The conversion of biomass-derived saccharides into platform chemicals is of immense importance for biorefineries. This study demonstrated the potential of using heteropoly acid as a catalyst in a green solvent system composed of gamma-valerolactone and water for the production of levulinic acid from biomass-derived saccharides. The effects of heteropoly acids with different central heteroatoms (P and Si) and addendum atoms (W and Mo) on the catalytic conversion of glucose to levulinic acid in the gamma-valerolactone-water system were studied. According to the experimental results, silicotungstic acid had the highest catalytic activity. In comparison to other catalysts, silicotungstic-acid-catalyzed glucose conversion could obtain the highest levulinic acid yield under the same reaction conditions, which was mainly attributed to the lower ratio of Bronsted/Lewis acid of silicotungstic acid. In optimal circumstances, 87.7% levulinic acid was obtained by glucose conversion at 190 degrees C and 60 min. Meanwhile, non-protonic polar solvent gamma-alerolactone could promote the slight conversion of glucose to pentose, producing about 9% furfural. In addition, a kinetic model was established to further evaluate the reaction process of glucose conversion to levulinic acid and furfural. The green reaction system was also appropriate for other saccharides. In this study, a new approach could be provided to efficiently convert saccharides into platform chemicals.

Abstract:The conversion of cellulose from renewable biomass into the key platform chemical, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is of fundamental importance to the production of numerous bioproducts and biofuels. Various acidic catalysts have been developed for this process; however, most systems suffer from low efficiency and poor sustainability. Here, we report an acid-free conversion of cellulose into HMF in a biphasic system of tetrahydrofuran/concentrated seawater. The yield of HMF reached 48.6%, and this system has excellent reusability and sustainability. We found that the chloridions (Cl-) can promote the isomerization of glucose via a 1,2-hydride shift path and accelerate the dehydration of fructose, thus driving the selective formation of HMF. This simple system is capable of converting raw biomass to furfural and HMF with the lignin residues transformed into useful alkanes via a sequential catalytic upgrading, paving a new economic-viable pathway for the full valorization of lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract:Abstract Cellulose is the main component of lignocellulosic biomass. Its direct chemocatalytic conversion into lactic acid (LA), a powerful biobased chemical platform, represents an important, and more easily scalable alternative to the fermentative way. In this paper, we present the selective hydrothermal conversion of cellulose and simple sugars into LA, under mild reaction conditions in presence of ErCl 3 grafted on the mesoporous silica (MCM-41) surface. High yields and selectivity were obtained for the conversion of sugars under microwave (MW) irradiation at a relatively low temperature (200 °C) and short reaction times (10 min) under microwave (MW) irradiation. Ultrasounds (US) pre-treatment was investigated to reduce the cellulose crystallinity, before the MW-assisted conversion, providing LA with a yield of 64% within 90 min at 220 °C below the subcritical water conditions with increased operational safety. We finally discuss the scalability of the process and the recyclability of the catalyst.

Abstract:Achieving precise selectivity control by driving specific reaction paths involving selective C-O bond activation of multifunctional molecules in renewable biomass-oriented upgrading is highly attractive but challenging. Herein, we report a strategy for accomplishing highly flexible and precisely controlled dual-oriented selectivity switching via simply responding to only the acidity of the designed Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst. We demonstrated the concept using lignocellulosic biomass-derived gamma-valerolactone (GVL) conversion as a showcase, which exhibited unique selectivity switching toward either valeric acid with a high selectivity of 97.3% or pentane fuel up to 93.6%, respectively. Theoretical calculations exposed the very distinct electron redistributions on the C atoms of GVL under the built-in responsiveness of catalyst acidity and the resulting acidity-dependent ring C-O bond activation modes in GVL ring-opening, affording well-switchable valeric- or pentane-oriented reaction channels. The present dual-oriented strategy offers a simple and effective method for the selective upgrading of biomass resources.
