Abstract:In this study, electroless iron coatings were deposited onto Pd catalysed non-metallic substrates in an alkaline bath, containing ammonium iron (II) sulphate hexahydrate as the metal source, trisodium citrate as a complexing agent, boric acid as the buffer, sodium hydroxide as the pH regulator and borohydride as the reductant. In addition, saccharin and lycine were investigated in this study as additives to the bath. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to characterise the iron coatings. The results show that the coatings present a natural amorphous state and the additives have visible effects on grain size and surface morphology. The saccharin can be used as the significant controlling factor in brittleness, and with its use grain refinement of electroless iron plating coatings has been identified. The addition of lycine leads to an increase in the release rate of hydrogen gas and a reduction in the porosity of the coatings.
