Abstract:One of the most serious bottleneck on achieving kilojoule-level high-energy petawatt (PW) to hundreds-petawatt (100PW) lasers with ps to fs pulse duration is the requirement of as large as meter-sized gratings in the compressor so as to avoid the laser-induced damage to the gratings. However, this kind of meter-sized grating with high quality is hard to manufacture so far. Here, we propose a new in-house beam-splitting compressor based on the property that the damage threshold of gratings depend on the pulse duration. The new scheme will simultaneously improve the stability, save expensive gratings, and simplify the size of compressor because the split beams share the first two parallel gratings. Furthermore, based on the fact that the transmitted wavefront of a glass plate can be much better and more precisely controlled than that of the diffraction wavefront of a large grating, then glass plates with designed transmitted wavefront are proposed to compensate the wavefront distortion introduced by the second, the third gratings, and other optics in-house such as the beam splitter. This simple and economical method can compensate the space-time distortion in the compressor and then improve the focal intensity, which otherwise cannot be compensated by the deformable mirror outside the compressor due to angular chirp. Together with multi-beams tiled-aperture combining scheme, the novel compressor provides a new scheme to achieve high-energy PW-100PW lasers or even exawatt lasers with relatively small gratings in the future.

Abstract:We report our researching work on algorithm design and software development for Dammann gratings design and fabrication for CO2 laser medical applications. The algorithm consists of two parts: elements surface-relief optimization and mask data generating. In the first part, Simulated Annealing Algorithm is adopted and some acceleration codes are imbedded into the algorithm for fast-calculation consideration, and the detailed design procedures are illustrated. In the second part, a mask data generating algorithm is proposed to generate the mask data with Caltech Intermediate Form (CIF) format. The algorithm firstly identifies the border sample-points of the designed patterns and then sorts them to form clockwise or counterclockwise closed curves. The algorithm has covered the area of Dammann gratings design and mask data output, which will bring convenience to its applications. As an example, a grating to produce 7*7 spots for CO2 laser medical applications was designed and fabricated to support and validate the efficiency of the developed software.

Abstract:Grating Light Valve (GLV) is a kind of optics device based on Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical System (MOEMS) technology, utilizing diffraction principle to switch, attenuate and modulate light. In this paper, traditional GLV device's structure and its working principle are illuminated, and a kind of modified GLV structure is presented, with details introduction of the fabrication technology. The GLV structure includes single crystal silicon substrate, silicon dioxide isolating layer, aluminum layer of fixed ribbons and silicon nitride of movable ribbons. In the fabrication, lots of techniques are adopted, such as low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), photolithography, etching and evaporation. During the fabrication processes, Photolithography is a fundamental and fatal technology, which determines etching result and GLV quality. Some methods are proposed through repeated experiments, to improve etching result greatly and guide the practical application. This kind of GLV device can be made both small and inexpensively, and has been tested to show proper range of actuation under DC bias, with good performance. The GLV device also has merits such as low cost, simple technology, high fill ratio and low driving voltage. It can properly be well used and match the demands of high light power needed in laser phototypesetting system, as a high-speed, high-resolution light modulator.
New grating compressor designs for XCELS and SEL-100 PW projects

Abstract:The problem of optimizing the parameters of a laser pulse compressor consisting of four identical diffraction gratings is solved analytically. The goal of optimization is to obtain maximum pulse power, completely excluding both beam clipping on gratings and the appearance of spurious diffraction orders. The analysis is carried out in a general form for an out-of-plane compressor. Two particular plane cases attractive from a practical point of view are analyzed in more detail: a standard Treacy compressor (TC) and a compressor with an angle of incidence equal to the Littrow angle (LC). It is shown that in both cases the LC is superior to the TC. Specifically, for 160-cm diffraction gratings, optimal LC design enables 109 PW for XCELS and 115 PW for SEL-100 PW, while optimal TC design enables 86 PW for both projects.

Abstract:High-energy tens (10s) to hundreds (100s) petawatt (PW) lasers are key tools for exploring frontier fundamental researches such as strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED), and the generation of positron-electron pair from vacuum. Recently, pulse compressor became the main obstacle on achieving higher peak power due to the limitation of damage threshold and size of diffraction gratings. Here, we propose a feasible multistep pulse compressor (MPC) to increase the maximum bearable input and output pulse energies through modifying their spatiotemporal properties. Typically, the new MPC including a prism pair for pre-compression, a four-grating compressor (FGC) for main compression, and a spatiotemporal focusing based self-compressor for post-compression. The prism pair can induce spatial dispersion to smooth and enlarge the laser beam, which increase the maximum input and output pulse energies. As a result, as high as 100 PW laser with single beam or more than 150 PW through combining two beams can be obtained by using MPC and current available optics. This new optical design will simplify the compressor, improve the stability, and save expensive gratings/optics simultaneously. Together with the multi-beam tiled-aperture combining method, the tiled-grating method, larger gratings, or negative chirp pulse based self-compression method, several 100s PW laser beam is expected to be obtained by using this MPC method in the future, which will further extend the ultra-intense laser physics research fields.

Abstract:The laser-induced damage observed in optics has rendered compressor gratings the most limited component of petawatt (PW) lasers, owing to the considerable challenges associated with manufacturing gratings possessing both a sufficiently high damage threshold and large dimensions. An asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC) based multistep pulse compressor method was proposed recently to alleviate the requirement of such gratings. The viability of AFGC is further investigated experimentally in SEL-100 PW frontend with spectral bandwidth of over 200 nm in this study. It is verified that the AFGC has the ability of beam-smoothing resulting from the introduced spatial dispersion. Meanwhile, the spatial dispersion scarcely impacts temporal contrast and focal spot of the output beam. By reducing the laser spatial intensity modulations from 2.0 to 1.3, the pulse energy capacity of the AFGC can increase more than 1.5 times through simple translation. The results mark a breakthrough toward experimentally renovating the grating compressor, and pave the way for a reliable and efficient constructions of 100 s PW lasers.

Abstract:Propagation of ultrashort intense laser pulses in a plasma Bragg grating induced by two intersecting laser pulses is studied. Such a plasma grating exhibits an ultrawide photonic band gap, near which the strong dispersion appears. It is found that the grating dispersion dominates the dispersion of the background plasma by several orders of magnitude. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show the light speed reduction, pulse stretching, chirped-pulse compression, and fast compression of Bragg grating solitons in the plasma grating. The nonlinear coupled-mode theory agrees well with the PIC results. Since the plasma grating can support an ultrahigh damage threshold, it can be a novel photonic device to manipulate extremely intense femtosecond laser pulses.
Low-dispersion low-loss dielectric gratings for efficient ultrafast laser pulse compression at high average powers

Abstract:We have developed low-dispersion (1480 l/mm), resonance-free, diffraction gratings made of dielectric materials resistant to femtosecond laser damage $(SiO_{2}/HfO_{2})$. A 14 cm diameter sample was fabricated resulting in a mean diffraction efficiency of 99.1% at {\lambda} = 810 nm with 0.4% uniformity using equipment which can fabricate gratings up to 1m diagonal. The implementation of these gratings in the compression of 30 fs pulses in an out-of-plane geometry can result in compressor efficiencies of ~95%. The measured laser absorption is 500x lower than current ultrafast petawatt-class compressor gratings which will enable a substantial increase in average power handling capabilities of these laser systems.

Abstract:It is proposed a new method of compressing laser pulse by fast extending plasma gratings(FEPG), which is created by ionizing the hypersound wave generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS) in the background gas. Ionized by a short laser pulse, the phonon forms a light-velocity FEPG to fully reflect a resonant pump laser. As the reflecting surface moves with a light velocity, the reflected pulse is temporally overlapped and compressed. This regime is supported by the simulation results of a fully kinetic particle-in-cell(PIC) code Opic with a laser wavelength of 1um, displaying a pump pulse is compressed from 13ps to a few cycles(7.2fs), with an efficiency close to 80%. It is a promising method to produce critical laser powers due to several features: high efficiency without a linear stage, robustness to plasma instabilities, no seed and a wide range of pump intensity.

Abstract:To avoid damage in high-power laser systems, a chirped plasma-based grating is proposed for compressing laser pulses that have been previously stretched and amplified. This chirped grating is generated through the interaction of chirped pump laser pulses in a plasma slab. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations demonstrate that the grating exists for a duration sufficient to be utilized in the final chirped pulse amplification (CPA) stage. The generation of the grating is quite flexible, as several parameters can be adjusted, such as plasma density, chirp, length, and intensity of the pump laser. To begin, the structure of the grating is analyzed in terms of ponderomotive effects of the pump laser pulses. The primary application of the chirped plasma-based grating lies in compressing laser pulses to large amplitudes and short durations after they have been stretched and amplified beforehand. The compression factor is explored in connection with potential grating parameters. Reflectivity and effective bandwidth of chirped plasma gratings are parameters to be optimized. However, the grating spectral bandwidth can only be increased at the expense of reflectivity. The PIC results are made understandable through model calculations based on coupled mode equations.
Design and analysis of broadband high-efficiency pulse compression gratings

Abstract:We report on two effective methods, multiparameter optimization and local optimization combined with the diffraction bandwidth merit function, to design a broadband pulse compression grating (PCG), and we present broadband, high-efficiency PCGs based on both the multilayer dielectric grating (MDG) and metal-multilayer dielectric grating (MMDG) models. For MDG, the average diffraction efficiency is higher than 97.5% for TE polarization light over the 100 nm bandwidth centered at 800 nm. Moreover, a novel multilayer structure, which comprises higher index material in the high-reflectivity mirror and relatively lower index material on top, is first proposed to yield higher average efficiency, broader bandwidth, and excellent fabrication tolerance. For MMDG, it exhibits an ultrabroadband top-hat diffraction spectrum with average efficiency exceeding 97% over the 200 nm wavelength wide centered at 1053 nm. In addition, the MMDG structure, which has the best tolerance for grating fabrication, is determined by investigating characteristics of MMDGs with different thin-film structures.

Abstract:A multistage smoothing multistep pulse compressor (MPC) based on a single-pass single-grating-pair (SSGP) main compressor is proposed to simplify the entire petawatt (PW) compressor. Only one grating pair with relatively long distance is used to generate the same amount of spectral dispersion in the main compressor compared with a four-grating main compressor. As the SSGP induces the largest spatial dispersion, it can introduce the best beam-smoothing effect to the laser beam on the last grating. When considering the diffraction loss of only two gratings, the total compression efficiency of the SSGP main compressor is even larger than that of a four-grating main compressor. Furthermore, the spatiotemporal aberration induced by single-grating-pair can be compensated effectively by using deformable mirrors, however it is difficult or complicated to be well compensated in a four-grating compressor. Approximately 50-100 PW laser pulses can be obtained using this SSGP-based multistage smoothing MPC with a single laser beam

Abstract:Contemporary chirped-pulse-amplified high-power laser systems rely on meter-sized diffraction gratings for pulse compression. Fabricating large gratings is a bottle-neck problem. We developed a multiple-holographic-exposure method to fabricate large monolithic gratings. In consecutive exposures, the attitude of the photoresist-coated substrate is monitored and adjusted by using two interferometers with a He-Ne laser, and the relative position between the substrate and the exposure interference fringes is adjusted by using the interference fringes between the diffraction orders of the latent grating with the exposure beams as the incident beams. A mosaic grating with a size of 80×50 mm2 was fabricated, and the wavefront aberration of the 1st-order diffraction wavefront in the mosaic area is better than /10 PV @633 nm.

Abstract:High-intensity lasers require suppression of prepulses and other non-ideal temporal structure to avoid target disruption before the arrival of the main pulse. To address this, we demonstrate that ionization gratings act as a controllable optical switch for high-power light with a temporal contrast improvement of at least $3\times10^5$ and a switching time less than 500 fs. We also show that a grating system can run for hours at 10 Hz without degradation. The contrast improvement from an ionization grating compares favorably to that achievable with plasma mirrors.

Abstract:The laser system with output energy larger than 150 Joules, output pulse width less than 1-ps has been finished in last year in Research Center of Laser Fusion (LFRC) at China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP). The front-end of the system can emit 4-mJ, 1053-nm femtosecond laser by optical parametric amplification based on supercontinuum white-light injection. Then the laser is stretched to chirped pulse with 2ns pulse duration and amplified to near 200 Joules by multi-stage phosphate Nd:glass amplifiers. Subsequent amplification in a chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) chain will result in a sometimes substantial lengthening of the output pulses owing to gain narrowing and uncompensated phase errors. The acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter (AOPDF) [2] is used to modulate the amplitude and phase of ultrashort pulses in order to maintain the short pulse duration after amplification. The size of a single gratings is not enough for high energy pulse compression, Therefore we developed tiled-gratings technology. A single-pass tiled-gratings-compressor (TGC) [3] is used in this system. Real-time monitoring and on-line alignment system has been established to achieve coherent addition of the tiled gratings. Impact of vibration being eliminated to a least level, the tiled gratings can keep stable for a several hours.

Abstract:In terms of Fourier optics,the amplitude expression of the output pulse from the misaligned tiled-grating compressor in the far-field is obtained.A theoretical model for the analysis of all the errors is put up,where the idea that the impact of alignment errors on the pulse is the additional phase delay and deflection is summarized.With the criterion that the encircled energy in one times diffraction limit should be kept more than 90% of the ideal case,a design is carried out for a 1 ps pulse with a size of 40 cm and the tolerances of every alignment error are obtained.
