Abstract:Fusion energy is a promising source of clean energy, which could solve energy shortages and environmental pollution. Research into controlled fusion energy has been ongoing for over half a century. China has created a clear roadmap for magnetic confinement fusion development, where superconducting tokamaks will be used in commercial fusion reactors. The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) is the world's first fully superconducting tokamak with upper and lower divertors, which aims at long-pulse, steady-state, H-mode operation, and 101-s H-mode discharge had been achieved. In 2007, China joined the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and became one of its seven members. Thirteen procurement packages are undertaken by China, covering superconducting magnets, power supplies, plasma-facing components (PFCs), diagnostics, etc. To bridge the gap between the ITER and fusion demonstration power plants (DEMOs), China is planning to build the Chinese Fusion Engineering Testing Reactor (CFETR) to demonstrate related technologies and physics models. The engineering design of the CFETR was completed in 2020, and Comprehensive Research Facilities for Fusion Technology (CRAFT) are being constructed to explore the key technologies used in the CFETR.

Abstract:ITER is a nuclear facility. It is essential to maintain operational safety or to bring this facility to a safe state in case of accidents or incidents. During plasma operation ITER plasma will generate significant heat loads on the plasma facing components. For a few reference accidents there is the need to stop plasma reliably within a certain time. Fusion power shutdown system is the safety system to implement this termination function for ITER. It is based on the concept of massive gas injection.This paper summarizes the safety requirements, logics and the physics requirements on this system for reliable termination of ITER plasma. With regard to the quantity of gas, transient behavior simulation is shown, subsequently providing guideline for laboratory bench-testing. Abstract:Abstract A key goal in the control of a magnetic fusion reactor is to maintain current profiles that are compatible with a high fraction of self-generated non-inductive current as well as with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability at high plasma pressure. This enables high fusion gain and noninductive sustainment of plasma current for steady-state operation. The approach taken toward establishing such plasma current profiles at the DIII-D tokamak is to create the desired profile during the plasma current ramp-up and early flattop phases. The evolution in time of the current profile is related to the evolution of the poloidal flux, which is modeled in normalized cylindrical coordinates using a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) usually referred to as the magnetic diffusion equation. We propose, and test in simulations, an extremum-seeking-based, receding-horizon, diffusivity-interior-boundary control scheme designed to match as close as possible a desired current profile within a prespecified time interval.

Abstract:With regard to pollution emission control, there are two critical issues that are blocking corona plasma industrial applications. The first one is the capacity of repetitive pulse power techniques, and the second is the total energy consumption. Worldwide research and development on industrial corona plasma systems were very much dependant on individual empirical experience. Systems were not designed at an optimized operation. To the authors' knowledge, no group has tried to bridge the gap between the fundamental characteristics of corona plasma, chemical reactions, pulsed power generators and the corona plasma reactor. This paper discusses their recent work in developing industrial corona plasma systems for industrial applications. (4 pages)

Abstract:Fusion nuclear reactions, in which multiple atomic nuclei collide to form a single atomic nucleus, can only occur at extremely high temperatures, where all matter is in the plasma state. In the majority of today's experimental fusion reactors, the fusion plasma is confined to a torus shape using a magnetic confinement system called a tokamak. The performance of a tokamak depends crucially on the current spatial profile, which is related to the poloidal magnetic flux. Accordingly, in this paper, we investigate a finite-time optimal control problem in which the aim is to drive the current spatial profile to within close proximity of a desired target profile, subject to a parabolic PDE governing the evolution of the poloidal magnetic flux. To solve this optimal control problem, we first use the finite element method to approximate the PDE model by an ODE model. Then, we apply the control parameterization and time-scaling techniques to obtain an approximate finite-dimensional optimization problem, which can be solved using sequential quadratic programming methods. Simulation results using experimental data from the DIII-D tokamak in San Diego, California demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Computing Open-Loop Optimal Control of the Q-Profile in Ramp-Up Tokamak Plasmas Using the Minimal-Surface Theory

Abstract:The q-profile control problem in the ramp-up phase of plasma discharges is considered in this work. The magnetic diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) models the dynamics of the poloidal magnetic flux profile, which is used in this work to formulate a PDE-constrained optimization problem under a quasi-static assumption. The minimum surface theory and constrained numeric optimization are then applied to achieve suboptimal solutions. Since the transient dynamics is pre-given by the minimum surface theory, then this method can dramatically accelerate the solution process. In order to be robust under external uncertainties in real implementations, PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controllers are used to force the actuators to follow the computational input trajectories. It has the potential to implement in real-time for long time discharges by combining this method with the magnetic equilibrium update.

Abstract:The plasma shape control plays an important role in Tokamak operation. With the purpose of improving the control capacity and performance, as well as system efficiency, we start the development of system identification on EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak). On the basis of ISOFLUX principle employed on EAST, we attempt to build up a control-oriented model. By comparison, we adapt PEM (Prediction-Error-Methods). The corresponding procedure and result are presented.

Abstract:Abstract Contemporarily, as a tool to address issue of energy shortage, controlled fusion has become a hot technology. Although there are ways to achieve controlled fusion, it is currently not efficient enough to produce electricity based on power plant. The topic of this paper is to introduce a method of controlled nuclear fusion derived from laser technology, inertial confinement fusion. This research analyzed from plenty of angles in terms of its development in recent years. Firstly, the article proposes the concept of fusion and inertial confinement fusion. The main contradiction is the usage of compression to achieve high ignition points. In fact, the goal of this paper is to try to reach this ignition point in various ways. After demonstrating the basic concept of the inertial confinement fusion, mathematical expression for ignition and the principle of laser, it is found that its efficiency can be increased in several ways, i.e., amplifying lasers, adding magnetic field, and shock ignition that changes the waveform. It’s still not up to production standards, but inertial confinement fusion does give a path to achieve the goal. These results shed light on guiding further exploration for ICF as well as predict the future development direction.

Abstract:This article objectively discusses the potential of development of nuclear fusion as a profitable energy source for the society of the future. After a brief exposition treating the physical foundations on which nuclear fusion is based – that are known for a century -, attention is drawn to the formidable difficulties that have been encountered when trying its practical implementation in a controlled device, and to the different proposals for reactors which have been conceived with the aim of overcoming them and demonstrate its scientific-technical feasibility. Information is provided regarding the most relevant (public and private) projects that are currently being developed in this field, which exhibits a situation characterized by the strong irruption of private initiative in recent years, and by diversification in terms of concepts and reactor designs, without it being clear at the moment which solution will prevail in the commercial stage, or whether the path to that goal will be completed by several models that will coexist. It is estimated that, in the most optimistic case and thanks to the impetus given by private initiative, the first commercial fusion energy plants could be available in the 2040s, making it plausible that public-private collaboration mechanisms will proliferate. The enormous advantages that this resource would bring to society are pointed, taking account of its virtues as a clean, safe, almost unlimited and cheap energy. This article will be continued by another devoted to exploring the economic viability of fusion technology, assuming the high level of uncertainty associated with both the vagueness of the details in the design and operation of the plants, as well as the lack of knowledge in the energy environment, economic and social in the coming years. Abstract:Current status and challenges of key physics related to high-confinement operational scenarios and energetic particle confinement are briefly reviewed from the perspective of design and operation of tokamak- based fusion reactors. In the past few decades, significant progress has been made in the research on high- confinement mode physics, i.e. the main stability and confinement constraints on operational window of a fusion reactor have been identified, and some control methods for adjusting plasma kinetic profiles to optimize performance have been developed. Several operational scenarios, including inductive, hybrid and steady-state etc, , which are potentially applicable for future reactors, have been developed. In the conditions that fusion alpha particle self-heating is predominant and shear Alfv & eacute;n wave (SAW) instabilities potentially dominate fusion alpha particle transport, the SAW linear stability properties and excitation mechanisms are understood in depth, and the SAW instabilities nonlinear saturation, alpha particle confinement, and the influence of the heating deposition and the micro-turbulence regulation on fusion profile are under extensive investigation. The magnetically confined fusion research has entered a new stage of ignition and burning plasma physics, and new challenges that are faced are addressed, including whether efficient self-heating of plasmas by fusion alpha particles can be achieved, how the plasma stability and high-confinement can be maintained through the active control of key plasma profiles under the condition of dominant alpha particle heating, and whether it is possible to establish accurate models to predict long time scale complex dynamical evolution of fusion plasmas etc. . Solving these key problems will lay a solid scientific foundation for designing and operating future fusion reactors as well as promote the development of plasma science.

Abstract:The magnetized nuclear fusion plasma is a non-linear dynamic system with limits and constraints. It requires a sophisticated plasma control system with a wide variety of functions and components to ensure optimal and safe performance. A graph-based modelling framework is proposed for the integrated development of physics models, plasma scenarios and control systems. The framework contains actuators and sensors, continuous plasma processes and variables, discrete plasma states and events, and requirements. Most importantly, it defines the couplings between these elements. A Dependency Structure Matrix (DSM), a technique to represent and organize complex graphs, analyses these couplings to reveal a potential global system layout. The framework is demonstrated for ITER, resulting in a fully traceable graph model. The DSM suggests that the system can be organized into five distinct groups: Heating and current drive, magnetic configuration, burn dynamics, transport and exhaust, and plasma–wall interaction. Each group consists of actuators, sensors and physics. All couplings between groups are made apparent in the DSM. Although ITER features specific actuators and sensors, these groups appear common for magnetically confined fusion devices.

Abstract:Success of the UK’s Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme requires a robust plasma control system. This system has to guide the plasma from initiation to the burning phase, maintain it there, produce the desired fusion power for the desired duration and then terminate the plasma safely. This has to be done in a challenging environment with limited sensors and without overloading plasma-facing components. The plasma parameters and the operational regime in the STEP prototype will be very different from tokamaks, which are presently in operation. During fusion burn, the plasma regime in STEP will be self-organizing, adding further complications to the plasma control system design. This article describes the work to date on the design of individual controllers for plasma shape and position, magneto hydrodynamic instabilities, heat load and fusion power. Having studied ‘normal’ operation, the article discusses the philosophy of how the system will handle exceptions, when things do not go exactly as planned. Abstract:ABSTRACT Due to its clean products and sufficient raw materials, fusion energy is expected to become one of the main solutions of the energy crisis and ensuring the sustainable development of human society, which is a long-term strategic frontier field. The promise of fusion energy is to constrain the motion of high-temperature plasma by the high magnetic field generated by superconducting magnets, and then achieve controllable thermonuclear fusion. Fusion power is proportional to the fourth power of the magnetic field strength. Thus, future commercial fusion reactors need a higher magnetic field as the basis for sustainable development [1]. In order to verify the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy, China, the United States, the European Union, Russia et al. have jointly participated in the construction of the International Thermonuclear Fusion Test Reactor (ITER), which is expected to produce the first plasma discharge by 2025 [2]. Currently, China is leading the world in many fields of fusion energy research. For example, the experimental advanced superconducting Tokamak (EAST) whole-superconducting Tokamak located at the Institute of Plasma Physics in the Chinese Academy of Sciences has achieved a repeatable world record of stable plasma operation at 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds, which provides a solid foundation for ITER and also China's future Independent Building Fusion Reactor (https://www.cas.cn/syky/202105/t20210528_4790357.shtml). Prof. Jiangang Li, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, participated in and completed the design and construction of EAST plasma facing componments (PFCs) engineering by the support of the national ‘9th five-year plan’ major scientific and technological infrastructure, and presided over the completion of the national ‘11th five-year plan’ major scientific and technological infrastructure—EAST auxiliary heating system project. He also hosted the national ‘13th five-year plan’ major scientific and technological infrastructure—Integrated Research Facility for Critical Systems of fusion reactor comprehensive research facility for fusion technology (CRAFT). Many important scientific and technological problems have been solved and overcome by Prof. Li and his co-workers, which puts China's plasma physics research and fusion engineering technology at the forefront of global engineering.

Abstract:Magnetic fusion plasmas, which are complex systems comprising numerous interacting elements, have large uncertainties. Therefore, future fusion reactors require prediction-based advanced control systems with an adaptive system model and control estimation robust to uncertainties in the model and observations. To address this challenge, we introduced a control approach based on data assimilation (DA), which describes the system model adaptation and control estimation based on the state probability distribution. The first implementation of a DA-based control system was achieved at the Large Helical Device to control the high temperature plasma. The experimental results indicate that the control system enhanced the predictive capability using real-time observations and adjusted the electron cyclotron heating power for a target temperature. The DA-based control system provides a flexible platform for advanced control in future fusion reactors.

Abstract:The contributions in magnetic confinement fusion theory presented at the 29th Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2003) are summarized here. This summary aims at providing an overview of the advances in the field and new directions in integrated modeling, computational physics, control design and application of artificial intelligence to discharge design and optimization. Given the increasing interest in bringing fusion to the grid and the focus on design and discharge optimization by means of self-consistent simulations that integrate physics and engineering with a hierarchy of fidelity models, the layout of this summary highlights applications over fundamental theory.

Abstract:Abstract Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) is widely considered as an ideal target plasma for magneto-inertial fusion. However, its confinement and stability, both proportional to the radius, will deteriorate inevitably during radial compression. Hence, we propose a new fusion approach based on axial compression of a large-sized FRC. The axial compression can be made by plasma jets or plasmoids converging onto the axial ends of the FRC. The parameter space that can reach the ignition condition while preserve the FRC’s overall quality is studied by using a numerical model based on different FRC confinement scaling. It is found that ignition is possible for large FRC that can be achieved with the current FRC formation techniques if compression ratio is larger than 50. A more realistic compression is to combine axial with moderate radial compression, which is also presented and calculated in this work.

Abstract:Within fusion research and development, there are three main categories of fusion devices: magnetic confinement fusion, inertial confinement fusion, and magneto-inertial confinement. The focus on achieving power production has historically centered around magnetic confinement fusion, employing devices such as tokamaks, stellarators, and spheromaks. The plasma confinement in these machines relies on powerful magnetic fields generated from large, complex electromagnetic systems containing superconducting coils. Superconductivity, or the flow of current without resistance at low temperatures, allows the electromagnets to fulfill the demanding requirements of fusion devices. Analyzing the history of superconducting magnets in the application of fusion energy production provides necessary insight into the current state of the technology and allows for identification of current and future trends in research and development. Throughout its history, fusion research has experienced cyclic periods of depression followed by renewed interest. Breakthroughs in superconducting technologies have played a part in stimulating these periods of renaissance, cementing its role as an enabling technology for fusion. Future trends in research aim to address several challenges in using superconducting magnets in fusion devices, including manufacturing difficulties, irradiation and long-term availability, quench detection and protection, and finally the high cost of the materials and cryogenic cooling. The resolution of these issues is crucial for advancing fusion devices toward practical energy production.

Instantaneous control strategies for magnetically confined fusion plasma

Abstract:The principle behind magnetic fusion is to confine high temperature plasma inside a device in such a way that the nuclei of deuterium and tritium joining together can release energy. The high temperatures generated needs the plasma to be isolated from the wall of the device to avoid damages and the scope of external magnetic fields is to achieve this goal. In this paper, to face this challenge from a numerical perspective, we propose an instantaneous control mathematical approach to steer a plasma into a given spatial region. From the modeling point of view, we focus on the Vlasov equation in a bounded domain with self induced electric field and an external strong magnetic field. The main feature of the control strategy employed is that it provides a feedback on the equation of motion based on an instantaneous prediction of the discretized system. This permits to directly embed the minimization of a given cost functional into the particle interactions of the corresponding Vlasov model. The numerical results demonstrate the validity of our control approach and the capability of an external magnetic field, even if in a simplified setting, to lead the plasma far from the boundaries.

Abstract:Viable magnetic fusion devices necessitate combining good confinement with effective power flux handling. A major concern for ITER, and devices beyond, is the divertor heat load width, which sets peak boundary heat loads on the plasma-facing materials. Current estimates of the heat flux width are narrow for future reactors. Here, we demonstrate how pedestal turbulence can expand into, or entrain, the stable scrape-off-layer and so broaden the heat flux width beyond these neoclassical predictions. Employing combined theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches, we focus on quiescent high confinement discharges on the DIII-D tokamak, but the results are of broader significance. Our findings uncover common trends in the edge turbulence intensity flux, the pressure perturbation skewness, and the turbulence mixing length, which together determine the heat flux width.
