Abstract:Currently, poor long-term cycling stability and intrinsic low charge/ionic conductivity of metallic oxides have limited its applications in lithium-ion batteries. The two-dimensional (2D) double transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXene) are extremely popular in energy storage because of their extremely high conductivity, mechanical property and flexibility, which will overcome the existing problems for metal oxides as Li-ion anodes. Herein, VNbO5 metallic oxide was successfully fabricated on VNbCTx MXene by an in-situ partial oxidation strategy. By adjusting the sintering temperature (300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 °C) to control the oxidation degree of VNbCTx MXene, high performance electrode material for lithium ion batteries was obtained. The as-prepared VNbO5 on VNbCTx MXene (for simplicity denoted as VNbC@VNO) combines the advantages of MXene and metal oxides, including the elevated conductivity of MXene, structural stability from in-situ growth of oxides between MXene layers, prevention of structural collapse and stacking during charge and discharge process, and facilitation of Li-ion transport. Compared with commercial vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) electrode materials with capacity of ~294 mAh g−1, VNbC@VNO-500 electrode demonstrates improved specific capacity of 400.3 mAh g−1 which exhibits a 36.2 % increasing in reversible capacity after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g−1 for Li-ion storage. Furthermore, superior rate performance (142.0 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1) was obtained based on the pseudocapacitance dominated mechanism. This work offers a facile and cost-effective way for enhancing LIBs properties, which is also helpful for the development and application of double transition metal MXene in the energy storage field.
