Abstract:Previous electroencephalography(EEG) studies have suggested that the amplitude of the steady-state visual evoked potential(SSVEP) varies with the temporal frequency of the visual input. This study analyzes this phenomenon using simulated EEG based on a three-shell boundary element method(BEM) head model. The results show that the dipoles located in the left and right visual cortices have a time difference when responding to the visual stimulus. Thus, the data suggests that the dipoles in the visual cortex have different temporal phase settings for different stimulus frequencies which results in the scalp EEG signals having different amplitudes. This hypothesis is verified by the simulations.
