Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.

Abstract:An experimental demonstration of an all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AOS-OFDM) transmission system with inline chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation is carried out to test the nonlinear influence. With five subcarriers non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulated, the total bit rate is 50 Gb/s without polarization multiplexing. The receiver end is highly simplified with direct detection using optical Fourier transform filter. After transmission in 160-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link with 130-ps/nm residual CD, an optimum input optical power for the system performance is achieved.

Abstract:A novel high speed transmission system using all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency multiplexing (AOS-OFDM) technique is proposed and demonstrated. By utilizing polarization multiplexing (PolMUX) and non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format, the total bit rate is 100 Gb/s with high spectral efficiency of 1.6. In addition, optical cyclic postfixes are inserted to help improve the system performance. The 100 Gb/s PolMux-NRZ-AOS-OFDM signals can pass through 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission link without any compensation.

Abstract:In this paper, all-optical OFDM transmitter and receiver with 5×20Gbit/s were simulated. The 100-Gbits/s signal was successfully transmitted over 40-km-SMF without dispersion companion in the simulation experiment. We have analyzed the principle of orthogonal carrier generation, and obtained the optimal configuration for two, three and five orthogonal carriers. Through designing proper system parameters, the clearly eye diagrams were obtained. The BER curves of five orthogonal signals were detected.

Abstract:A chirped fiber grating (CFG) written by the moving fiber/phase mask scanning beam technique with a uniform mask is used to demonstrate the dispersion compensation in the externally modulated microwave/millimeter-wave over fiber system It is found that the use of the CFG is an efficient way to compensate for the severe RF power degradation induced by the fiber chromatic dispersion, which results in a significant improvement in the transmission performance. The signal to noise ratio is improved from 4.8 dB to 24.4 dB when 10.58 GHz RF signal carrying 5 Mbit/s QPSK format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber.

Abstract:The performance of a novel all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is proposed and analyzed. Time delays and phase shifters are used to realize all optical forward/inverse discrete Fourier transform (DFT/IDFT). Different system configurations are tested and analyzed to optimize the performance, including the system capacity, modulation formats, DFT/IDFT constructions, and the width of the sample pulse. The 50- and 100-Gb/s real-time all-optical sampling (AOS) OFDM systems are investigated. All results are analyzed, and useful suggestions are offered for future high-speed applications.

Abstract:A novel high spectral efficiency all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (AOS-OFDM) scheme with optical cyclic postfixes (OCPs) inserted is proposed. Ultrashort pulses are used as optical samples and processed by all optical discrete Fourier transformers based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) technique. This scheme includes five subcarrier channels with 20 Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) modulation of each channel. So, the total bit rate is 100 Gb/s. The spectral efficiency is higher than 1.4. Furthermore, with the help of OCPs, the dispersion tolerance of this 100 Gb/s AOS-OFDM system increases to more than 300 ps/nm, which is much higher than a traditional 100 Gb/s DQPSK system.

Abstract:Metro network, as a medium distance transmission system, poses a special challenge of transmission capacity and cost. In this paper, we present a detailed comparison of applying three advanced modulation formats including pulse amplitude modulation-4 (PAM-4), carrierless amplitude and phase modulation-16 QAM (CAP-16), and discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) with low-cost direct detection for 100-Gb/s/ metro optical transmission systems. These modulation formats are all experimentally demonstrated with similar digital signal processing algorithms. Three kinds of chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation ways named CD precompensation method, single sideband (SSB), and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) are also compared. Two types of modulators including an IQ modulator and a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator are employed to generate SSB or CD precompensated signals in this experiment and their transmission performance is also evaluated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the performance of single-wavelength 100-G signal transmission based on direct detection is evaluated over 480 km of standard single mode fiber with PAM-4, CAP-16, and DFT-S OFDM modulation formats.

Abstract:Single-carrier (SC) and multicarrier (MC) transmissions have emerged as two competitive technologies for long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission systems. In this letter, we compare chromatic dispersion (CD) and nonlinearity tolerances for coherent optical SC frequency-domain-equalization and SC orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing systems. We establish the simulation systems employing the same structures of transmitter and receiver, the same structure of frame, and almost the same frequency-domain equalization method except the inverse fast Fourier transform processing. Both CD tolerance and nonlinear transmission performance in single-channel and wavelength-division-multiplexing scenarios are investigated. The comparison can reveal the difference of SC and MC transmissions.

Abstract:Orthogonal transmission with frequency division multiplexing technique is investigated for next generation optical communication systems. Coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing (SCFDM) schemes are compared in combination with polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) or 16-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) formats. Multi-granularity transmission with flexible bandwidth can be realized through ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UDWDM) based on the orthogonal technique. The system performance is numerically studied with special emphasis on transmission degradations due to fiber Kerr nonlinearity. Abstract:Optical time domain multiplexed (OTDM) technology helps to respond to the need for increased capacity and demand in internet traffic using optical transmissions. High-speed optical networks are highly affected by chromatic dispersion (CD) that causes pulse broadening and intersymbol interference (ISI) at the light detector. This paper presents a comparative analysis of chromatic dispersion compensation on 10 Gbps single mode fibre (SMF) and 40 Gbps OTDM operating at C-band using Gaussian apodized linear chirped fibre Bragg grating, Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifier (EDFA) and uniform fibre Bragg grating (UFBG) hybrid approach in OptiSystem 18. A cascade of four UFBG and chirped Bragg gratings design approach presents minimal improvement in the quality factor and achievable single mode fibre length. Quality factor results at a reference wavelength of 1550 nm were obtained for respective chirped Bragg grating lengths of 8 mm, 20 mm, 50 mm, 87 mm, and 90 mm using linear Gaussian apodization. The Q-factor results obtained using the proposed simulation model for single 10 Gb/s channel were respectively 51.14 dBm over 30 km at a grating length of 20 mm and 15.64 dBm over 150 km at 45 mm of grating length. Different eye-diagrams corresponding to varying grating lengths have also been presented for 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s at corresponding SMF lengths.

Abstract:An all-optical sampling OFDM scheme using PolMux-DQPSK format with single source is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. 5 × 200 Gb/s AOS-OFDM signal with spectral efficiency of 3.07 bit/s/Hz is successfully transmitted over an 80 km SMF link with real-time detection by optical Fourier transform filters. Furthermore, this scheme can coexist with traditional WDM channels and be a promising technique for seamless upgrade of transmission date rate.

Abstract:Asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) has been a promising candidate in visible light communications (VLC) due to its improvement in power efficiency and reduction of nonlinearity based on previous simulation analysis. In this paper, for the first time as far as we know, we experimentally verify that ACO-OFDM would be an efficient scheme to improve the performance of a gigabit wavelength division multiplexing VLC system. Our theoretical investigations reveal that the advantages of ACO-OFDM can be attributed to the reduction of inter-carrier interference caused by signal-signal beating noise. An aggregate data rate of 1.05 Gb/s is successfully achieved over 30 cm transmission below the 7% forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). The experimental results show that ACO-OFDM can outperform DC-biased optical OFDM by BER performance of 1.5 dB at the same data rate and 4 dB at the same bandwidth, which clearly demonstrates the benefit and feasibility of ACO-OFDM. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel approach to simultaneously receive multi-band 100-Gb/s direct-detection optical signal with only one polarization and one conventional 40-GHz photodiode. The modulation format of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) is selected to provide signal spectrum with high side-lobe suppression ratio, which can effectively reduce the electrical sub-band frequency interference. The whole 100-Gb/s OFDM/OQAM signal is comprised of 6 sub-bands with 16- and 32-QAM formats loading. Only one guard band is required to accommodate the overlapped 6-band signal-to-signal beat interference (SSBI). The receiver bandwidth is mainly limited by the digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) of 33 GHz. The transmission distance over standard single mode fiber (SSMF) is up to 320 km.

Abstract:In current metro and access optical networks, the frequency band beyond the bandwidth of the electro-optical components is always deprecated due to the fading frequency response. On the other hand, an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is managed on individual subcarrier and can adapt to the varied channel frequency response by optimally allocating different modulation formats and powers across different subcarriers. Therefore, to reuse the commercial low bandwidth components in high speed networks, we design modified OFDM signals, which are with adaptive power and bit allocation, to improve the bandwidth utilization and maximize the data rate. We successfully transmit 16-GHz optical OFDM signals over a 20-km standard single mode fiber link with a 10-GHz commercial Mach-Zehnder (MZ) intensity modulator and direct detection. Eleven modulation formats are used for bit loading and the maximum data rate can reach 88.8 Gb/s. The modulation bandwidth utilization of the MZ modulator is increased by 60%.

Abstract:Power unevenness, mainly induced by stimulated Raman scattering, has been a major problem in multi-band transmission systems, especially in the upcoming field-deployed 400 Gbit/s widened C band plus L band system for backbone long-haul and ultra-long-haul scenarios. To reduce the impact of power unevenness, we propose an automatic power optimization (APO) algorithm to guarantee reliable transmission for all channels, especially the channels at short wavelengths. The simulation results show that the power unevenness of output power after 5-span transmission in the C band is up to 11 dB before APO, while after APO is applied, it is greatly improved to less than 1.6 dB. To further investigate the performance of the APO scheme, we conduct a real-time 44 Tbit/s C+L transmission system over 1900 km G.654.E fiber utilizing 400 Gbit/s transponders. The experimental results show that the power unevenness has been effectively compensated from 12 dB to 4 dB in the entire 11 THz range, making the received optical signal-to-noise ratio relatively flat (3.4 dB). Moreover, the capacity and distance product of this system is 83.6 Pbit/s·km (44 Tbit/s × 1900 km), and to the best of our knowledge, this is a record capacity and distance product in the real-time single-mode fiber transmission system.
