Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.
Performance Improvement of the Free-Space Optical Communication Link Using Spatial Diversity Reception-Assisted OFDM Signals

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology is presented for use in free-space optical (FSO) communications accompanied by the spatial diversity reception. Using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation formats, the OFDM signals show robustness to support high spectral efficiency and compatibility with the spatial diversity reception to improve receiver sensitivity. Compared with the single-carrier QPSK signal, the OFDM-QPSK signal with 64 sub-carriers can reduce the BER from 2.87 × 10−3 to 2.98 × 10−4 at the SNR of 6 dB. Using a two-aperture spatial diversity reception with OFDM, the BER can be reduced from 2.45 × 10−3 of a single receiver to 6.10 × 10−4 under moderate turbulence conditions. Under strong turbulence, the BER of the single receiver is 2.14 × 10−2. It can be improved to 1.16 × 10−3 by using four-aperture receivers, and even 6.87 × 10−4 by using six-aperture receivers. The optimized aperture number should be selected according to channel conditions.

Abstract:In this letter, we theoretically investigate the intercarrier interference (ICI) that is induced by carrier frequency offset (CFO) and sampling frequency offset (SFO) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. A window shaping technique in the time domain at the OFDM receiver is presented, which can improve the tolerance to the frequency offset and reduce ICI. Compared with the conventional demodulation scheme, the simulation shows that the utilization of the window shaping method can increase the resistance to residual CFO to about eight times at power penalty of 2 dB. It can also improve the tolerance to SFO. A 4.65 Gb/s 4QAM OFDM RoF system over 40 km fiber link and 60 GHz wireless link is demonstrated experimentally. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the scheme is measured, with and without the proposed window shaping method, respectively. About 0.9 dB improvement of the required receiver power at a BER of $10^{-3}$ shows the feasibility of the window shaping method for ICI reduction in OFDM RoF system.
Optical OTFS is Capable of Improving the Bandwidth-, Power- and Energy-Efficiency of Optical OFDM

Abstract:We demonstrate that the proposed optical orthogonal time frequency space (O-OTFS) is capable of improving the bandwidth-/power-/energy-efficiencies of optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM). The bandwidth-efficiency is improved because only a single cyclic prefix (CP) is needed for an entire O-OTFS frame. The power-efficiency is enhanced thanks to the diversity gain achieved by its symplectic finite Fourier transform (SFFT), which also leads to a reduced peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), hence improving its energy-efficiency. These features are facilitated by the proposed layered asymmetrically clipped O-OTFS (LACO-OTFS), which is capable of removing the direct current (DC) bias while retaining the full optical throughput. Nonetheless, there exists an inherent trade-off, where increasing the O-OTFS frame size leads to a commensurately reduced CP percentage at the cost of an increased PAPR. In order to mitigate this, we propose to perform discrete Fourier transform based spreading (DFT-S) in the delay-Doppler (DD)-domain. Furthermore, we demonstrate that regardless of the choice of domain in which the information is modulated (i.e. O-OFDM/O-OTFS with/without DFT-S), the frequency-selectivity of the quasi-static but dispersive optical channel can always be equalized by single-tap frequency-domain equalization (FDE). Moreover, the channel estimation techniques are conceived to operate in the time-/frequency-/DD-domains for both O-OFDM and O-OTFS. Our simulation results demonstrate that for a multi-user optical wireless system associated with M = 64 subcarriers and the OTFS frame length of N = 64, LACO-OTFS is capable of achieving a 7 dB power-efficiency gain over LACO-OFDM, where the CP overhead is reduced by a factor of N = 64. DFT-S-LACO-OTFS is also capable of providing a 7 dB power-efficiency gain over DFT-S-LACO-OFDM, where the low PAPR of single-carrier transmission is retained.

Abstract:We analyze the performance of a coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system and a serial decode and forward relay transmission multihop coherent free-space optical OFDM system using an exponential distribution atmospheric turbulence model under the circumstance of strong atmospheric turbulence. The attenuation of the atmospheric channel fading model mainly considers the light intensity scintillation caused by atmospheric turbulence and interaction between the path consumption, the transmitter and the receiver. The OFDM signal mapping method uses quadrature amplitude modulation. We also derive the formulas of the outage probability and symbol error rate of the coherent OFDM and multihop system, respectively, under the conditions described above. In addition, a simulation is performed, which is essential to evaluate the influence of key factors including coherent detection in a number of relay nodes, the mapping orders, and the number of subcarriers, which have a significant effect on the outage performance and the bit error performance of the OFDM-FSO system under the strong atmospheric turbulence. Abstract:This paper theoretically investigates the signal degradation induced by intersubcarrier interference and frequency-selective fading in orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing radio-over-fiber systems. Turbo codes and bit interleaver technologies are proposed to effectively mitigate unbalanced error distribution because of intersubcarrier interference and frequency-selective fading. Experimental results show that the receiver sensitivities are improved as far as 5 dB after 50-km SMF-28 transmission for 6.25-Gb/s wireless signals on optical generated 60-GHz carrier.

Abstract:We show numerical simulation results of three different timing synchronization methods in Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OOFDM) system using Intensity-Modulation and Direct-Detection (IM/DD) in Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF) channel and do comparative study of the three algorithms. Based on Park's algorithm, we present a modification to it that can obtain higher time estimation accuracy in OOFDM system using IM/DD.

Abstract:We have recently demonstrated the improved phase noise tolerance in coherent optical OFDM by digital coherent superposition of optical OFDM subcarriers, which are phase-conjugated pairs with Hermitian symmetry. In this approach, we realized DCS of OFDM subcarriers in single polarization (or channel), denoted as SP-DCS-OFDM. In this paper, we show that another approach is in dual polarizations, or DP-DCS-OFDM. According to the concept of phase-conjugated twin wave, both approaches can also mitigate the fiber nonlinearity to the first order. We prove that both approaches can cancel the inter-carrier interference (ICI) due to phase noise to the second order, and we derive the reduced ICI power to the fourth order using the Wiener phase noise model. In simulation, we show the enhanced tolerance to the laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity.
Efficient Channel Estimation for OFDM Systems with Reduced Pilot Overhead

Abstract:Channel estimation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems stands for an important issue in mobile broadband communications, where a class of methods based on training symbols, also known as pilots, have been widely studied. Aiming at improving the spectrum efficiency and reducing the transmission latency, we tend to approach the minimal pilot overhead for OFDM systems by proposing a two-stage channel estimation method. Specifically, in the first stage, the initial value of the channel frequency response is obtained by the discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based estimator. Then, in the second stage, soft-decision is performed to select the components with high confidence, and thus the complete channel estimation value is reconstructed by employing the compressed sensing technology. Simulations show that the proposed scheme yields considerable improvements in both bit error rate (BER) performance and data transmission efficiency.

Recent Patents on Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Abstract:Recent patents and approaches of symbol timing and frequency offset estimation in optical OFDM systems are reviewed. The synchronization methods utilizing the training sequence or cyclic prefix are discussed and compared. The processing approaches includes subtraction, low-power DC offset, auto- and cross-correlation schemes.The synchronization methods have been evaluated in terms of the efficiency and complexity. It is shown that, by determining the optimal length of the non-zero pattern of the training sequence, synchronization algorithm using simplified auto-correlation scheme can achieve both of the accuracy and low complexity for optical OFDM systems. © 2013 Bentham Science Publishers.

Abstract:Schemes integrating inter-carrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation and common phase error (CPE) compensation for coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems are investigated. The purpose of our research is to counteract the impacts of laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity. We propose two ICI self-cancellation-based CO-OFDM schemes, and adopt a pilot-aided decision feedback (DFB) loop for CPE compensation. The proposed schemes are compared with conventional CO-OFDM schemes at the same spectral efficiency. Simulations show that our schemes can not only enhance laser linewidth tolerance of the CO-OFDM system, but also present strong robustness against fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:Using digital sub-band-demultiplexing, we experimentally demonstrate an efficient 66.7-Gb/s RGI-OFDM transmission scheme. Experimental results show that the overhead of cyclic prefix is reduced from 26.9% to 11.1%, which cannot be received by conventional OFDM.

Abstract:The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system applies coherent demodulation to achieve high spectral efficiency at a bandwidth cost by the pilot tones. Considering the statistical property of the down-link channels to the users, it can be found that there is an opportunity to reduce the pilot number in the conventional designs while maintaining the same signal demodulation performances. The design philosophy involves utilizing the difference of the channel coherent bandwidths (CCBs) by allocating data to appropriate positions upon the fact that different CCBs can tolerate different minimized pilot spacing. The proposed design allows each user's equipment's data not to exceed its CCB with the sparser pilots. The theoretical analysis is carried out based on the concept of channel frequency response using linear interpolation with channel estimation employing the least squares (LS) method. The gain of the proposed method is demonstrated in terms of the ergodic capacities and confirmed by the simulations.

Abstract:Digital coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON) is a strong candidate for the 2nd-stage-next-generation PON (NG-PON2). However, as an OFDM system, especially for long-symbol duration OFDM system, it is very sensitive to laser phase noise. The common phase error (CPE) and intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the laser phase noise severely cut down the performance of the coherent OFDM-PON. To correct the phase noise as well as guarantee high spectral efficiency, in this letter, we propose an advanced pseudo pilot-aided orthogonal basis expansion-based (A-PS-OBE) blind ICI suppression method over both constant and nonconstant modulus modulation, and deployed it in coherent optical time division multiplexing (TDM) OFDM-PON. The numerical results demonstrate the A-PS-OBE method can make the application of the cost-effective lasers possible in the coherent TDM-OFDM-PON and high-order modulation can also be adopted though the laser linewidth is large to 700 kHz.

Abstract:Optical wireless communication (OWC) systems suffer inter-symbol interference (ISI) in time domain due to light emitting diode (LED)’s limited bandwidth at transmitter. As intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is used, the transmitted signals are unipolar and real-valued rather than bipolar and complex-valued as in radio frequency (RF). Thus, it is challenging to employ the RF-based timing offset estimation for OWC. Also, there is no carrier frequency offset (CFO) like in RF. It is possible to estimate timing offset in frequency domain for two reasons. First, the effect of ISI in time domain is mitigated in frequency domain with correct timing offset estimation, robust against LED’s limited bandwidth. Second, the correlation between frequency-domain signals are high, as signals are bipolar and complex-valued in frequency domain rather than unipolar and real-valued in time domain. Therefore, we propose an effective frequency-domain timing offset estimation approach for direct current biased optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) OWC systems, where a small number of pilots are applied on few DCO-OFDM subcarriers, leading to very low spectral overhead. The property of no CFO is utilized to formulate an error function, by exploring the correlation between received signals and pilots. We propose a squared error function (SEF)-based timing offset estimation approach, conducted by maximizing the ratio of two successive variances of squared errors. Simulation results show that, with a very low training overhead of 0.48%, the proposed SEF-based approach provides a bit error ratio (BER) performance close to ideal case with perfect timing offset estimation, perfect channel state information and zero-forcing (ZF) equalization.

Abstract:A simple optical OFDM (OOFDM) synchronization technique utilizing subtraction and Gaussian windowing at the symbol rate is proposed and implemented in FPGA-based OOFDM receivers. End-to-end real-time symbol synchronization of 128-QAM-encoded OOFDM signals at raw bit rates of 6.56Gb/s is experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, over directly modulated DFB laser-based 25km SMF intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) systems. Experimental investigations show that the proposed synchronisation technique offers a number of salient advantages including low complexity, fast tracking speed, high accuracy and suitability for high-capacity optical transmission systems.

Abstract:Optical coherent burst-mode transmission can offer not only flexibility but also efficiency of the network resource utilization in elastic optical networks. We propose a new digital signal processing (DSP) scheme of coherent burst reception with a training sequence (TS) to solve the convergence problem of equalization caused by the interaction between fast-changing transient frequency offset (TFO) and fiber chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation in optical burst (OB)-mode systems. The DSP scheme is demonstrated to perform well by the simulation and experimentation on 128 Gbps polarization multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PM-QPSK) coherent systems. Thanks to the DSP scheme, a guard interval between two OBs is no longer needed, and the valid payload can be transmitted during TFO changing from wavelength tuning. The proposed DSP scheme can reduce the overhead by ∼73% for wavelength-tunable OB-mode coherent systems compared with using guard intervals, which significantly improves the spectral efficiency of burst-mode systems.
