Abstract:The performance of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems suffers from severe degradation over the wireless channels with the spectral nulls. Zero-Padded (ZP) OFDM signal guarantees the symbol recovery by using MMSE but faces cubic order complexity in equalizer. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity signal reconstruction to deal with the spectral nulls by utilizing the DFT codes. The simulation results demonstrate that the significant performance improvement can be achieved by using our proposed method over the so-called ZP-OFDM overlap and add scheme with extra yet acceptable complexity.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology is presented for use in free-space optical (FSO) communications accompanied by the spatial diversity reception. Using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation formats, the OFDM signals show robustness to support high spectral efficiency and compatibility with the spatial diversity reception to improve receiver sensitivity. Compared with the single-carrier QPSK signal, the OFDM-QPSK signal with 64 sub-carriers can reduce the BER from 2.87 × 10−3 to 2.98 × 10−4 at the SNR of 6 dB. Using a two-aperture spatial diversity reception with OFDM, the BER can be reduced from 2.45 × 10−3 of a single receiver to 6.10 × 10−4 under moderate turbulence conditions. Under strong turbulence, the BER of the single receiver is 2.14 × 10−2. It can be improved to 1.16 × 10−3 by using four-aperture receivers, and even 6.87 × 10−4 by using six-aperture receivers. The optimized aperture number should be selected according to channel conditions.

Abstract:A novel rateless coded Vector Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (V-OFDM) system for adaptive transmission over wireless channels is studied in this paper. In particular, an iterative receiver with joint V-OFDM equalization and ratelss decoding is designed, which exchanges the logarithmic likelihood information between the belief propagation decoder and the maximum likelihood equalizer or the hard/soft decision based equalizer recursively. Both analytical and numerical results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the system performance with a modest complexity.

Abstract:We propose a high spectral efficiency coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system utilizing a novel and almost blind phase noise compensation method. With the aid of pseudo pilots instead of pilots, laser phase noise can be suppressed effectively while the overhead of system is reduced successfully. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed pseudo pilot-aided phase noise compensation scheme can approach that of the pilot-aided counterpart, yet achieve higher spectral efficiency even when the phase noise is severe.

Abstract:We propose a phase-noise compensation algorithm by using radio frequency pilot (RF-Pilot) method in combination with extend Kalman filter (EKF) in time domain for the coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system with large linewidths and high-order circular quadrature amplitude modulation (C-QAM). We realize the coarse phase-noise compensation in time domain by setting a RF-Pilot at the receiver, and then complete the channel evaluation and channel balance. After accomplishing the initial pre-decision in the frequency domain, we use EKF to realize the final phase noise compensation, according to the judged temporal signal and the channel equalization temporal signal. We numerically verify the algorithm by transforming in a 50 Gb.s(-1) CO-OFDM system with 100 km transmission distance under C-16QAM and C-32QAM. The results show that compared with original RF-Pilot phase-noise compensation algorithms, the proposed method has better performance on the phase noise compensation while has no obvious decrease of frequency utilization, and the complexity is not increased significantly. For CO-OFDM systems with C-32QAM and a laser linewidth of 2.1 MHz, the bit error rate achieves the upper limit of forward error correction. It theoretically confirms that the proposed algorithm can improve the tolerance of laser linewidth on the CO-OFDM system. We can use the inexpensive distributed feedback lasers with relatively large linewidth as the source of the object and the oscillator of the receiver. The proposed phase-noise compensation algorithm is beneficial to the application of CO-OFDM system in long distance access network and metropolitan area network.

Abstract:The complex time-domain equalization can be replaced by simple frequency-domain equalization in OFDM systems. This is one of the key advantages of the OFDM technique. On the other hand, channel noise affects the accuracy of channel estimation, deteriorating the performance of equalization. We present in the paper a novel algorithm, which is based on the well-known Walsh transform, to mitigate the noise effects in equalization. The performance of the proposed algorithm is very close to that with perfect channel estimation, while the computation required is pretty small due to the use of Walsh transform.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a low-overhead equalization algorithm used in the intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) system with offset-quadrature amplitude modulation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OQAM-OFDM) modulation. By utilizing the complex interference approximation (IA) structure and the comb pilot-based frequency domain intra-symbol averaging and intra-subcarrier linear interpolation (CFAL) method, the OQAM-OFDM signal’s intrinsic imaginary non-orthogonal distortions can be mitigated and the low overhead of channel estimation with high estimation accuracy can be achieved. The experiment and numerical simulation are constructed to evaluate the proposed IA-CFAL algorithm from the aspects of bit error rate (BER) performance, mean square error (MSE), dispersion tolerance, time jitter tolerance and complexity. Comparison with the previous algorithms are made to prove its robustness to transmission impairments with low training overhead.

Abstract:In Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, the local oscillator phase noise introduces two effects: common phase error (CPE) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). The correction of CPE does not suffice always, especially when high data rates are required. Through the creation of a frequency-domain linearized parametric model for phase noise, we generate an ICI reduction scheme to deal with phase noise. The effects of the transmitter high-power-amplifier (HPA) nonlinearity on the phase noise compensation are also investigated. The algorithm performance over AWGN channel is presented for DVB-T 2k and 8k modes. It is shown by the simulation results that the algorithm can significantly reduce the symbol-error rate (SER) floor, caused by the residual phase noise after CPE correction, while sacrificing an acceptable transmission bandwidth.
Chromatic Dispersion Compensation Using Two Pilot Tones in Optical OFDM Systems

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to compensate the fiber chromatic dispersion (CD) and to adjust the phase/amplitude using two pilot tones in fiber optical OFDM transmission. In the conventional channel estimation methods, one or more symbols have to be applied as the pilot tones. The new approach makes full use of the fiber CD properties while using less pilot tones. The simulations show a significant improvement (~ 2 dB) of the optical OFDM signal in terms of the bit error rate (BER) penalty, compared with the conventional least-square (LS) linear interpolation and one-reference-symbol methods.

Abstract:Phase noise (PN) consists of common phase error (CPE) and inter carrier interference (ICI). In an OFDM symbol, CPE has the same impact on each subcarrier, which is easy to be suppressed. However, ICI destroys the orthogonality of subcarriers, which is difficult to be eliminated. Therefore, an additional method is needed to be performed in the OFDM receiver to compensate the ICI. The interpolation method is considered an effective way to eliminate the ICI caused by PN in the OFDM system. To enhance the accuracy of the PN estimation and compensation, we propose a linear method, LI-ICI-EE1 method based on LI-ICI-E1. Multiple interpolation slopes are first calculated by selecting multiple pairs of observation samples, then the slope with the maximal linear fitting degree based on the least square (LS) criterion is selected to improve the LI precision. Furthermore, to improve the estimation accuracy of PN in the LI-ICI-EE1, we propose a Shrinkage-based on LI-ICI-E1 method named SLI-EE1, which is implemented by adding an l2 norm penalty term to the error function. At last, to optimize the low accuracy of LI-ICI-EE1 and SLI-EE1 when the PN compensation problem is a high-order problem, we propose a non-linear method Shrinkage-based Third-order Lagrange method named STL. Simulation results show that the improved methods have better BER performance.
A Low Complexity Frequency-Domain Linear Equalization Algorithm Based on Pre-processing in OFDM System

Abstract:Considering the serious Inter-Carrier Interference(ICI) in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) wireless systems with high frequency,a low complexity frequency-domain linear equalization algorithm based on pre-processing is proposed.The new algorithm first extracts a time-variant factor from every channel response.Consequently,one-dimensional filtering pre-processing in time-domain can be achieved at the receiver.As for the time-variant channel after time-variant factor extraction,Banded structure is used to approximate its frequency response matrix,which achieves low complexity frequency-domain linear equalization at the receiver.The analysis and simulation results show that,the proposed algorithm can reduce the complexity to 10% or less at the cost of 1-2dB performance,relative to MMSE algorithm;the proposed algorithm can obtain at least 5dB relative performance gain with the same complexity,compared to the existing low complexity algorithm which discards part channel information.

Abstract:For applications of elastic optical network (EON),this paper proposes a sub-wavelength granularity optical signal transmission technique based on sub-carrier multiplexing in electrical domain with high flexibility,fine granularity and high efficiency.The digital signal processing in electrical domain can help to support flexible configurability on different sub-wavelength signals with different modulation formats and transmission rates.To meet the flexibility requirements from sub-wavelength signal transmission in EON,this paper also proposes a based on channel estimation and frequency-domain equalization (FDE) method based on.Detailed studies focus on performance comparisons between pilot signal based FDE and training sequence based time-domain equalization (TDE) and FDE methods with different equalization algorithms.Simulation results show that the pilot signal based zero-forcing FDE algorithm can obtain effective dispersion compensation and improve the transmission performance with low computation complexity.Meanwhile,taking into account the flexibility requirements from frequency slot and routing configuration in sub-wavelength granularity EON,this paper uses numerical simulations to study in detail the transmission performance with different sub-wavelength signal numbers,transmission distances and modulation formats.It is verified that the channel estimation and FDE method base don linearly frequency chirped pilot signal can achieve good adaptability under different EON configurations,and is one of the key technologies to be used in flexible optical transceivers and sub-wavelength signal dynamic redconfiguration.

Abstract:A phase noise compensation algorithm based on joint estimation of Kalman filtering (KF) in time and frequency domains is proposed aiming at higher-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) based incoherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system with large linewidth. Training symbols and pilot sequences in time domain are set in the transmitter. Frequency domain Kalman filtering is carried out based on training symbols at the receiver, and channel estimation value is obtained. Rough estimate value of phase noise is obtained with time domain extended Kalman filtering (EKF). The estimation value of phase noise in time domain is plural, and in order to obtain better compensation results, every OFDM symbol is divided into several sub-symbols according to the number of pilot sequences. Time domain EKF is carried out at the positions of pilot sequences. Rough estimation value of phase noise of every sampling point is obtained with linear interpolation at the last pilot of every sub-symbol. Predecision of frequency domain data after rough phase noise compensation and time domain phase noise fine compensation are carried out. Numerical simulation is performed by the proposed algorithm for CO-OFDM system with transmission rate of 50 Gbit· s_1 and transmission distance of 100 km. Results show that the compensation results achieved by the proposed method are better than that of other methods. When CO-OFDM system is with 16QAM and a laser linewidth of 1 MHz or with 32QAM and a laser linewidth of 800 kHz, bit error rate can reach the upper limit of forward error correction.

Abstract:In the coherent optical communication systems at 100 Gbit/s and higher rates using high-order phase modulation,laser phase noise and dispersion effects in fiber-optic transmissions are the major factors that affect the system performance.To compensate for these effects,this paper proposes a method for the combined use of electric channel equalization and carrier phase estimation modules in the electric domain.The phase estimation is completed after the electric channel equalization,the results of which are also used in updating the tap coefficients of the equalizer.This method can effectively reduce the requirements for the step-size in the equalization,conducive to acquiring lower bit error rate,more stable error performance and longer transmission distance.

Abstract:The increasing of phase noise in high-frequency orthogonal frequency division multiplexing wireless communication system degrades the system performance.A joint channel transfer function and phase noise estimation algorithm with low pilot consumption was proposed to resolve the conflict.By analyzing the characteristics of channel transfer function and phase noise,the algorithm is divided into two steps： on OFDM pilot time-slot,estimate channel transfer function and phase noise;on pilot sub-carriers,estimate phase noise continuously to eliminate inter-carrier interference caused by it,assuming the channel is constant.The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can eliminate phase noise effectively in a heavy phase noise condition.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely used in wireless communication systems for the advantage of mitigating inter-symbol interference caused by multi-path propagation. However, OFDM based wireless communication systems, such as the ultra-wideband (UWB) system, suffer performance degradations caused by phase noise distortion. The phase noise distortion introduces two effects: common phase error (CPE) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). In this paper, the VLSI architecture for phase noise compensation based on decision feedback algorithm using MMSE equalization is investigated. Particularly, the finite word length effect specific to the architecture is analyzed considering the tradeoff between the performance and the hardware complexity.

Abstract:Previous studies have revealed the similarity between phase noise in the symbol domain of discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-Spread) coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems and that in the time domain. This paper further details this characteristic through both formulas and simulation results, while also analyzing and summarizing its formation conditions and influencing factors. Based on this, a phase noise compensation (PNC) scheme based on DFT-Spread OFDM is proposed for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission with large fast Fourier transform (FFT) sizes. The proposed scheme effectively suppresses inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by phase noise in OFDM systems, as verified through simulations of dual-polarization (DP) 64-QAM CO-OFDM transmission over 80 km single-mode fiber (SMF). This work suggests that proposed PNC scheme enhance the tolerance for laser linewidth in OFDM systems, and may offer a possible solution for short distance high-baud-rate high-order QAM coherent transmission.
