Abstract:A photonic quantization approach to implementing analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) in the optical domain with differential encoding employing a phase modulator and delay-line interferometers (DLIs) is proposed and demonstrated. In the proposed ADC system, the phase-modulated signal is sent to an array of DLIs that have identical time delay difference, but different phase shifts, which are employed to achieve quantization with differential encoding. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed. The quantization of a 10 GHz sinusoidal signal with a bit length of 4 is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:An improvement of a photonic analog-to-digital converter based on phase-shifted optical quantization (PSOQ) is presented and verified. The resolution can be increased by employing an additional Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) to combine with the PSOQ scheme. The improved scheme with a quantization level of 32 (corresponding quantization bit number is 5 bits) is experimentally demonstrated by using two LiNbO3 modulators, and the experimental result with the effective number of bits 4.23 is obtained.

Abstract:All optical analog-to-digital converters(ADC) are key devices in high speed signal processing.The frequency response characteristic of all optical ADC based on polarization-differential interference and phase-shifted optical quantization(PSOQ) is experimentally demonstrated.Different frequency sinusoidal signals are quantized by a 4 bit photonic ADC.The frequency spectra of digital signals are obtained and analyzed by discrete Fourier transform.The results show that the rang of frequency response is from 74.07 dB to 74.22 dB.The fluctuation of the frequency response is less than 0.15 dB.Then a 1 GHz triangular waveform is sampled and all-optical quantized,and the effective number of bits(ENOB) of 3.31 bit is obtained.The experimental results show that the frequency response of the PSOQ is better,and the application of PSOQ in arbitrary waveform is feasible.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion in a system with a phase modulator (PM) and a delay-line interferometer (DLI). The phase modulation and interferometric demodulation techniques are employed to realize quantization and encoding. In the system, the phase-modulated signal is optically sampled by a multiwavelength pulsed source and the phase-shifted transfer functions of the DLI under different wavelengths are used for encoding. In the approach, the differential signal, but not the original analog signal, is encoded, which increases the equivalent number of bits. In addition, the balanced detection technique can be incorporated into the system to alleviate the influences of amplitude and timing jitter.

Abstract:A novel approach of an all-optical analog-to-digital converter is proposed and demonstrated. One single-phase modulator and a continuous-wave laser diode are used to quantize the sinusoidal tone analog signal. Software sampling measurements yielded an effective number of bits of 4.1. Benefits of the proposed setup are its simple design, high bandwidth, and stability. The scheme is primarily limited in the optical domain by the speed of the phase modulator and in electronic domain by electrical comparators and logic devices.

Abstract:A novel phase-shifted optical analog-to-digital conversion proposal is presented and analyzed. Using an unbalanced MZM and specifically designed filter array, the desired phase shift between adjacent quantization channels can be realized. Comparing with existing schemes, the main advantage of this scheme is only one EOM and two wavelengths needed, regardless of the quantization resolution. Utilizing commercial products, analysis indicated that the number of bits as high as 8-bit and sampling rate up to 40GS/s can be realized.

Abstract:A novel approach for photonic quantization using dual-output Mach–Zehnder modulators (DOMZMs) and balanced photodetectors (BPDs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Based on the phase-shifting technique, all DOMZMs used in the scheme have identical half-wave voltages but are biased at different voltages. Due to the use of BPDs and DOMZMs with complementary outputs, the threshold voltages of comparators can be kept at zero, which eliminates the influence of power fluctuation of the input sampling pulses and improves the effective number of bits (ENOB) of the analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) system. After the comparators, a digital Gray code that represents the analog signal to be digitized is obtained. Proof-of-concept experiments with 8 and 16 quantization levels are implemented to verify the feasibility of the proposed approach. Bit resolution, ENOB degradation induced by bias voltage errors and potential for photonic integration are also discussed.

Abstract:A novel approach of a phase shifted all-optical analog-to-digital converter with double parallel intensity modulator is proposed and demonstrated.The phase shift of quantization curve is simply realized by optical attenuation.The proposed scheme can solve the problem of pulse walk-off,and low precision of phase shift in the present phase shifting quantization schemes as well as the influence of environment and temperature.In this scheme,the outputs of two parallel LiNbO3 intensity modulators are split into 4 channels with an optical attenuator inserted in each channel.By appropriately adjusting the optical attenuators,the phase shift between two adjacent channels is achieved,thus 8-channel optical quantizer is realized with resolution of4 bits.In the experiment,a10 GHz sinusoidal input signal is quantized using this scheme with an effective number of3.7 bits.The deviation from the ideal case is only0.3 bits.This result donates that the proposed approach is feasible,and has a relatively high effective number of bits compared with the present schemes.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:A photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) utilizing the modal birefringence of the polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) is proposed. In the PMF, sampling pulses with different wavelengths have different phase shifted transfer functions, which could be used for quantizing and encoding in a photonic ADC. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed and a 2.5 GHz sinusoidal electrical analog signal is quantized by using 16 different wavelengths. Abstract:A noninterferometric configuration for an optical phase-shifter module (OPSM) is presented and demonstrated, which is a key component in phase-shifted optical quantization (PSOQ) systems. In a PSOQ system employing such an OPSM, the input electrical analog signal is applied on two LiNbO3 intensity modulators in parallel, and the OPSM takes the outputs of the intensity modulators as its input and yields N-channel optical outputs, which are thresholded to generate digitized values of the input analog signal. The feasibility of this OPSM configuration is demonstrated by a proof-of-principle PSOQ experiment, in which a 2.5-GHz single tone is applied to the modulators and 16 transmission curves are recorded. Based on these transmission curves, software sampling indicates that an effective number of bits equal to 4.17 is attainable for a frequency as high as 2.5 GHz. Abstract:We propose what we believe to be a novel approach to enhance the dynamic range of a photonic analog-to-digital converter (PADC) without the need of additional custom-designed circuits or components. The method utilizes the unique characteristic of our previously reported multimode interference (MMI) coupler-based optical quantizer that exploits the periodicity of the optical phase to realize a modulo operation. Experiments were carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method on our phase-shifted optical quantization ADC (PSOQ-ADC) chip. Experimental results show that our proposed method enhance the dynamic range from [-V π, V π] to [-2V π, 2V π] and has the potential to be further extended. Additionally, we successfully reconstructed radio frequency (RF) signals at a sampling rate of 30 Gs/s. Our work provides a promising solution for achieving a high dynamic range in on-chip PSOQ-ADC.

Abstract:This paper firstly briefly introduces and reviews the recent developments in phase-shifting optical quantization for high-speed microwave signals, which is one promising branch in all-optical analog-to-digital conversion. After that, a phase-shifting optical quantization system with a sampling rate of 40GS/s and a theoretical read-out-bits of 4-bit is built, and practical considerations for further improvements of both sampling rate and resolution are discussed.

Abstract:A novel 2N bit bipolar photonic digital-to-analog converter (PDAC) scenario based on the optical differential quadrature phase shift keying (ODQPSK) modulation coupled with differential detection is proposed. Compared with other proposed schemes, this bipolar PDAC has a greater dynamic range and a larger noise margin with good scalabilities both in speed and resolution. We demonstrate a 4 bit PDAC in a proof-of-principle experiment at a sampling rate of 2.5 GS/s.

Abstract:All-optical format conversion from nonreturn-to-zero ON-OFF keying to binary phase-shift keying is demonstrated in a semiconductor optical amplifier-based nonlinear polarization switch. This conversion is realized by cross-phase modulation effect for phase encoding and nonlinear polarization rotation effect for amplitude equalization. In the experiment, error-free operation at 10 Gb/s is achieved with a receiver sensitivity penalty of 1.3 dB after single-ended detection.

Abstract:An all-optical format conversion (AOFC) scheme for the input 30 Gbit/s rectangular 8-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (8QAM) signal is proposed and numerically investigated based on phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) and nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Firstly, the input rectangular 8QAM signal is orthogonal decomposed into the inphase and quadrature components based on PSA, respectively. The in-phase component is the 4-ary amplitude and phase shift keying (4APSK) signal and the quadrature component is the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal. Secondly, the converted 4APSK signal is transmitted into one piece of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) to obtain the phase-distorted two-amplitude and two-phase (2A-2P) signal based on the self-phase modulation (SPM) effect. After adjusting the power of the 2A-2P signal, it is injected into one nonlinear MZI to eliminate the amplitude difference of the inner and the outer rings of the 2A-2P signal. The 2A-2P signal can be converted into the regular quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal by the nonlinear MZI with phase preservation. Thirdly, the converted BPSK and QPSK signals are coherently superposed in one 3-dB optical coupler (OC) to get the aggregated rectangular 8QAM signal and other types of 8QAM signals. The proposed scheme can also be extended to realize the AOFC from the 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal to two QPSK signals. The constellation diagrams, amplitude and phase histograms, error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit error rate (BER) of the relevant optical signals are measured to evaluate the system performance. The proposed scheme can be equipped with the optical gateway to enable all-optical interconnection of optical networks with different modulation formats.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new hybrid code structure based on the overlapping of two light sources to produce the effect of multi-voltage amplitudes. And we also proposed an efficient polarity reversal threshold (RRT) algorithm for multilevel based OCC system. Then taking the issue of SPO into account, a novel adaptive sampling method (ASM) is proposed, which can effectively alleviate the problem of SPO and further enhance the performance of multilevel OCC. It is demonstrated that a data rate of 8.4 Kbit/s can be achieved by applying the proposed two algorithms.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal adopting Mach–Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. The MZM is driven by a 6-GHz precoded vector signal carrying 2-Gbaud QPSK transmitter data, and biased at its minimum transmission point to realize OCS modulation. The phase of the 6-GHz precoded vector signal is 1/2 of that of the regular QPSK symbol. Only one polarization beam splitter (PBS) is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The bit-error rate (BER) for the 2-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulated vector signal can reach the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission in the presence of optical dispersion compensation, and 80-km SMF-28 transmission causes no power penalty.
