Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an improved Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) architecture supporting bandwidth-scalable physical layer local area network (LAN) emulation. Due to the use of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technology for the LAN traffic transmission, there is no need to change the existing EPON architecture. Only one receiver at each optical network unit (ONU) is required to detect both LAN traffic and EPON downstream traffic, which makes the proposed system simple and cost-effective. Moreover, flexible assignment of LAN traffic bandwidth is realized by allocating different number of subcarriers or using different modulation formats. The 250 Mb/s 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (4-QAM) and 500 Mb/s 16-QAM OFDM LAN traffic are successfully emulated with the EPON traffic in our experiment. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:In this paper, a novel Passive Optical Network based on Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA-PON) is presented. The design of the Optical Line Terminator (OLT) and the Optical Network Unit (ONU) for the OCDMA-PON are studied in detail. The proposed OCDMA-PON combines the advantages of PON and OCDMA technology and it can be applied to an optical access network with full services on demand, such as internet protocol, video on demand, tele-presence and high quality audio. Compared to other multiple access technologies, the proposed OCDMA-PON provides more ONU and assembly flexibly for PON. We analyze in detail the scalability and system transmission performance of such a network. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is feasible and that the novel design can improve the scalability and transmission performance of the optical access networks.

Abstract:Since the Internet and broadband networks were introduced, emerging applications—such as video on demand, teleconferencing, and high-quality audio transmission—have demanded high-throughput optical-access networks with stringent qualityof-service (QoS) capabilities. However, the infrastructure of current access networks suffers from limited bandwidth, high network-management costs, poor flexibility, and low security, which prevent networks from delivering integrated services to their users. Owing to the maturity of optical components and electronic circuits, optical-fiber links have become practical for use in access networks. Passive optical networks (PONs) and different multiplexing technologies have been proposed in this context, including wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM),1 time-division multiplexing (TDM),2 and optical-code-division multiplexing (OCDM).3 PONs have been standardized for fiber-to-the-home solutions and are deployed by network-service providers worldwide. Even though PONs based on TDM (TDM-PON) effectively use fiber bandwidths, they have limitations regarding transmission speed, burst synchronization, security, dynamic-bandwidthallocation, and ranging accuracy.4, 5 WDM technology has also been proposed for PONs. When used in conjunction with PONs (WDM-PON), this emerging technology becomes more favorable as the required bandwidth increases, but it has failed to attract attention from industry because of the high cost of the associated optical components.6 Other schemes for optical access networks are currently under study worldwide.7 Optical-code-division multiplexing access (OCDMA) systems have attracted attention in recent years because of a number of advantages, including their asynchronous access capability, flexibility of user allocation, support of variable bit rates, burst Figure 1. Abstract:A novel hybrid WDM/TDM optical access network architecture called wavelength shared WDM PON and its media access control mode is proposed. The system is based on a two-stage distribution tree connecting OLT and ONUs.and uses ALOHA protocol for control channel and FIFO scheduler to efficiently assign bandwidth. The packet delay in the system is analyzed and the numerical results demonstrate that the system possesses well performance of packet delay.

Abstract:Recently, digital signal processing (DSP) methods have been extensively studied and various DSP-based schemes have been proposed for next-generation passive optical network (PON). In this paper, we combine the time-division-multiplexing (TDM) architecture with advanced DSP methods to achieve high spectrum-efficiency colorless transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), as the original form of various DSP methods with frequency-domain equalization (FDE), is chosen for both upstream and downstream transmissions. In the TDM-PON based on OFDM (TDM-OFDM-PON) architecture, OFDM symbols are transmitted in different time slots instead of on-off-key (OOK) bits in conventional TDM-PON. This architecture can be extended for single-carrier with FDE easily. Due to the same TDMA scheme, it can achieve maximum compatibility with current TDM-PON. A DSP-based evolution scheme from conventional TDM-PON to TDM-OFDM-PON is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by upgrading the optical line terminal (OLT) to support both OOK and OFDM signals, which can maintain the current optical distribution network (ODN) and minimize the impact for the existing service and equipment.

Abstract:This article provides a brief overview of the evolution and emerging trends of passive optical networks (PONs). Early standardized time division multiplexed (TDM) PONs, namely the Broadband PON (BPON), Gigabit PON (GPON), and Gigabit Ethernet PON (GE-PON), are first reviewed and compared. A discussion on standardized 10 G-PON including IUT-T next-generation PON stage-1 (NG-PON1) also commonly referred to as XG-PON and IEEE 10 Gigabit Ethernet PON (10GE-PON) is then presented. Abstract:A passive optical network (PON) scheme based on optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) for the downstream traffics is proposed and analyzed in detail. In the PON, the downstream traffics are broadcasted by OCDM technology to guarantee the security, while the upstream traffics pass through the same optical fiber by the common time division multiple access (TDMA) technology to decrease the cost. This schemes is denoted as OCDM/TDMA-PON, which can be applied to an optical access network (OAN) with full services on demand, such as Internet protocol, video on demand, tele-presence and high quality audio. The proposed OCDM/TDMA-PON scheme combines advantages of PON, TDMA, and OCDM technology. Simulation results indicate that the designed scheme improves the OAN performance, and enhances flexibility and scalability of the system.

Abstract:Increasing bandwidth requirements have posed significant challenges for traditional access networks. It is difficult for intensity modulation/direct detection to meet the power budget and flexibility requirements of the next-generation passive optical network (PON) at 100G and beyond considering the new requirements. This is driving researchers to develop novel optical access technologies. Low-cost, wide-coverage, and high-flexibility coherent PON is emerging as a strong contender in the competition. In this article, we will review technologies that reduce the complexity of coherent PON (CPON), enabling it to meet the commercial requirements. Also, advanced algorithms and architectures that can enhance system coverage and flexibility are also discussed.

Passive optical networks(PONs) have large bandwidth;they can be flexibly deployed;and they are able to carry multiple services. In this paper,we discuss the architecture of a wireless backhaul based on PON. In such a network,the optical line terminal is placed in a central office and connects with the wireless core network. The optical network unit is placed in the mobile station. A passive optical splitter and fiber optic cable constitute a PON between the OLT and ONU.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new access networks concept: wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks. We emphasize the superiority of its architecture and analyze two special technologies adopted by recent WDMPON architecture: optical source sharing and spectral slicing. In the end, we indicate that WDMPON is the best candidate for future broadband network. It will offer important reference for telecommunication carriers to consider the best choice for the future OAN.

Abstract:"http://www.osa-jon.org/features/OAN_2005.html". Feature Issue on Optical Access Networks (OAN). Passive optical networks (PONs) have the potential to be high-speed access networks. However, PONs have higher installation and maintenance costs. One way to overcome these costs is to maximize the sharing, i.e., connect as many subscribers as possible onto one PON serving area. We propose a novel multistage linear add-drop (LAD) architecture for high-capacity PONs that is flexible, scalable, and provides bidirectional and symmetric wavelength-division multiplexing data services. As a result, we can provide real triple play services (video, data, and voice) at higher rates and lower cost. We also demonstrate a three-stage LAD PON experimental test bed that employs 40 downstream wavelengths, 40 upstream wavelengths, and a 20 nm broadcast band for video and other broadcast services. This access network design can support symmetric data services up to 10 Gbits/s along with 2.5 Gbits/s of video data for each of as many as 1280 users that would be in a 20 km range.

Abstract:A novel evolution scheme from legacy TDM-PON to the next generation WDM-PON with DPSK/ASK orthogonal modulation is proposed. The new WDM-PON is added into the existing PON infrastructure and coexisting with the current TDM-PON. To eliminate any change requirement for the existing TDM-PON, DPSK is applied for WDM-PON downstream. Meanwhile, upstream remodualtion is applied to achieve colorless ONU in WDM-PON. The application of DPSK/ASK reduces both crosstalk from coexisting and remodulation. The experiment results show the crosstalk is very little. Good performance is achieved for both unchanged coexisting TDM-PON and WDM-PON upstream signals in our proposed scheme.

Abstract:It is believed that next-generation passive optical networks (PONs) are required to provide flexible and various services to users in a cost-effective way. To address this issue, for the first time, this paper proposes and demonstrates a novel wavelength-division-multiplexed PON (WDM-PON) architecture to simultaneously support three types of services: 1) wireless access traffic, 2) optical virtual passive network (VPN) communications, and 3) conventional wired services. In the optical line terminal (OLT), we use two cascaded Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs) on each wavelength channel to generate an optical carrier, and produce the wireless and the downstream traffic using the orthogonal modulation technique. In each optical network unit (ONU), the obtained optical carrier is modulated by a single MZM to provide the VPN and upstream communications. Consequently, the light sources in the ONUs are saved and the system cost is reduced. The feasibility of our proposal is experimentally and numerically verified.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose that the power fading of double sideband for OFDM-PON induced by chromatic dispersion is smal when using low radio frequency (RF). The OFDM-PON based on time division multiplexing (TDM) architecture is the best solution for uplink colorless transmission. This makes ful use of the advantages of OFDM technique and colorless TDM architecture and is highly compatible with existing EPON and GPON. Time wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM) PON based on OFDM is a strong candidate for future PON, which makes ful use of OFDM modulation to increase the capacity of a single carrier without changing the structure of TWDM-PON system, achieving 100 Gbit/s high-speed access.
