Abstract:To overcome the target-aspect sensitivity in radar high resolution range profile (HRRP) recognition, a novel method called Improved Kernel Distance Fuzzy C-means Clustering Method (IKDFCM) is proposed in this paper, which introduces kernel function into fuzzy c-means clustering and relaxes the constraint in the membership matrix. The new method finds the underlying geometric structure information hiding in HRRP target and uses it to overcome the HRRP target-aspect sensitivity. The relaxing of constraint in the membership matrix improves anti-noise performance and robustness of the algorithm. Finally, experiments on three kinds of ground HRRP target under different SNRs and four UCI datasets demonstrate the proposed method not only has better recognition accuracy but also more robust than the other three comparison methods.

Abstract:Current perception and monitoring systems, such as human recognition, are affected by several environmental factors, such as limited light intensity, weather changes, occlusion of targets, and public privacy. Human recognition using radar signals is a promising direction to overcome these defects; however, the low signal-to-noise ratio of radar signals still makes this task challenging. Therefore, it is necessary to use suitable tools that can efficiently deal with radar signals to identify targets. Reservoir computing (RC) is an efficient machine learning scheme that is easy to train and demonstrates excellent performance in processing complex time-series signals. The RC hardware implementation structure based on nonlinear nodes and delay feedback loops endows it with the potential for real-time fast signal processing. In this paper, we numerically study the performance of the optoelectronic RC composed of optical and electrical components in the task of human recognition with noisy micro-Doppler radar signals. A single-loop optoelectronic RC is employed to verify the application of RC in this field, and a parallel dual-loop optoelectronic RC scheme with a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is also used for performance comparison. The result is verified to be comparable with other machine learning tools, which demonstrates the ability of the optoelectronic RC in capturing gait information and dealing with noisy radar signals; it also indicates that optoelectronic RC is a powerful tool in the field of human target recognition based on micro-Doppler radar signals.
Dual Space SVDD Based Radar Target Recognition from HRRP

Abstract:In radar target recognition based on kernel method, Support vector data description（SVDD） has been applied to High resolution range profiles（HRRPs）recognition. In this paper, first, three distribution models,i.e., Membership model, Cloud model, Gaussian mixture model, are developed to describe distribution characteristics of HRRPs in extended space. Secondly, test HRRPs in multi-target hypersphere spaces are classified, in accordance with their multi-space distributing characteristics,into two types, i.e., shrink sample and slack sample. Determination of the property of a test sample is achieved by using the minimum relative distance for shrink samples and three distribution models for slack samples, respectively. Thus three HRRP recognition methods based on dual space SVDD are formed. The extensive experiment results for HRRPs of four planes show that the proposed methods have better recognition performance than the recognition method based on single space SVDD.

Abstract:Since the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) directly relates to the distance between the target and the radar for a given noise power and radar power, the noise robustness of a recognition algorithm is very important to increase the recognition distance between the target and the radar in the real application. In this paper, a novel noise-robust recognition method for high-resolution range profile (HRRP) data is proposed to enhance its recognition performance under the test condition of low SNR. The target dominant scatterers are first extracted based on the scattering center model of complex HRRP data via the orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm. Then, a scatterer matching recognition algorithm based on Hausdorff distance is developed with the magnitudes and locations of extracted dominant scatterers used as the feature patterns. Here, the noise reduction is accomplished based on the sparse distribution property of dominant scattering centers in a target. Experimental results on the synthetic and measured HRRP data demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the recognition performance under the relatively low SNR condition for both orthogonal and superresolution representations of scattering center model.

Abstract:Secondary motions of targets observed by radar introduce non-stationary returns containing the so-called micro-Doppler information. This is characterizing information that can be exploited to enhance automatic target recognition systems. In this paper, the challenge of classifying the micro-Doppler return of helicopters is addressed. A robust dictionary learning algorithm, Label Consistent K-SVD (LC-KSVD), is applied to identify effectively and efficiently helicopters. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on both synthetic and real radar data.

Abstract:The carrier-free ultra-wideband (UWB) radar (impulse radar) has seen a recent surge of interest. In this letter, a novel recognition system for vehicles based on the carrier-free UWB radar is proposed, in which the sparse representation is introduced as an effective feature extraction method. Based on the original K-SVD algorithm, we provide a new dictionary learning (DL) idea. Instead of only embedding discrimination criteria in the objective function, we expand and improve the optimization procedure of the K-SVD algorithm. Moreover, to alleviate the impact of the signal diversity on the recognition performance, we propose a hierarchical code constraint (HCC) and bind it to the improved K-SVD model. In this way, signals from the same class but with different distributions will be represented by the corresponding dictionary atoms. Extensive experiments prove the improved K-SVD with an HCC-IKSVD can effectively take both reconstruction capability and discriminative power of the dictionary into consideration.

Abstract:In order to enhance radar target recognition performance of high-resolution range profile (HRRP) under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), a novel HRRP sequential recognition method utilizing the correlation among scattering centers is proposed in this letter. In this method, the correlative information among the prominent scattering centers is considered in the covariance matrix and the sequential recognition is carried out through the long short-term memory (LSTM) network to fully excavate the information of HRRPs. Moreover, we introduce a noise-robust recognition algorithm to renew the Gaussian-trained model by the estimated variance of the noise. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can acquire higher recognition rates and better robustness by introducing correlative information and sequential processing.

Abstract:According to the characteristic of radar receiver signal,this paper proposed a new method in radar fault diagnosis,which combined wavelet transformation and Least Squares Support Vector Machine(LS-SVM).First,according to the expert's experiences,it selected the proper test point in the circuit,the sampled data characteristic was extracted and processed by wavelet transformation,then established the model of radar fault diagnosis,at last,the fault diagnosis in a certain type of radar receiver was applied by the basic principal and classification method of LS-SVM.The sampled signals were processed by wavelet de-noising in order to reduce error in sampling,and then applied wavelet decomposition to extract energy coefficient as the characteristic vectors of the radar,after normalization,they were the input vectors of the fault diagnosis model of radar,and the outputs of the model were used to complete the categories of the typical faults in the radar receiver.The actual example results of the simulation with MATLAB tools indicate that this method has better classification ability and improves the accuracy and efficiency of the fault diagnosis.

Abstract:A novel machine learning method named multiclass multiple kernel learning based on support vector data description with negative (MMKL-NSVDD) is developed to classify the FFT-magnitude feature of complex high-resolution range profile (HRRP), motivated by the problem of radar automatic target recognition (RATR). The proposed method not only inherits the close nonlinear boundary advantage of SVDD-neg model, which is applied with no assumptions regarding to the distribution of data and prior information, but also incorporates multiple kernel into the mode, avoiding fussy choice of kernel parameters and fusing multiple kernel information. Hence, it leads to a remarkable improvement of recognition rate, demonstrated by experimental results based on HRRPs of four aircrafts. The MMKL-NSVDD is ideal for HRRP-Based radar target recognition.

Abstract:Deep learning has made significant progress in the field of radar space target recognition. However, deep neural networks require significant amounts of data to train network parameters, posing challenges in achieving non-cooperative target recognition. Therefore, it is of practical significance to research a fast and accurate target recognition method with limited radar data. In this paper, we propose a novel radar space target recognition network based on high-dimensional feature maps, called HRPnet, which fully utilizes high-resolution range profile (HRRP), radar cross section (RCS), and polarization (POL) data obtained from the radar. First, a sparse auto encoder (SAE) is employed to conduct deep feature extraction on the three types of data. Second, the Gramian angular field (GAF) transformation is employed to obtain two-dimensional representation of HRRP, RCS, and POL data, respectively. These two-dimensional maps are then integrated to construct high-dimensional feature maps. Third, a feature map convolutional neural networks (FMCNN) is designed for high-dimensional feature map classification and target recognition. Experimental results indicate that the proposed HRPnet outperforms existing methods in terms of recognition accuracy and noise resistance, particularly in the case of limited sample size.

Abstract:Usually radar target recognition methods only use a single type of high-resolution radar signal, e.g., high-resolution range profile (HRRP) or synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. In fact, in the SAR imaging procedure, we can simultaneously obtain both the HRRP data and the corresponding SAR image, as the information contained within them is not exactly the same. Although the information contained in the HRRP data and the SAR image are not exactly the same, both are important for radar target recognition. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end two stream fusion network to make full use of the different characteristics obtained from modeling HRRP data and SAR images, respectively, for SAR target recognition. The proposed fusion network contains two separated streams in the feature extraction stage, one of which takes advantage of a variational auto-encoder (VAE) network to acquire the latent probabilistic distribution characteristic from the HRRP data, and the other uses a lightweight convolutional neural network, LightNet, to extract the 2D visual structure characteristics based on SAR images. Following the feature extraction stage, a fusion module is utilized to integrate the latent probabilistic distribution characteristic and the structure characteristic for the reflecting target information more comprehensively and sufficiently. The main contribution of the proposed method consists of two parts: (1) different characteristics from the HRRP data and the SAR image can be used effectively for SAR target recognition, and (2) an attention weight vector is used in the fusion module to adaptively integrate the different characteristics from the two sub-networks. The experimental results of our method on the HRRP data and SAR images of the MSTAR and civilian vehicle datasets obtained improvements of at least 0.96 and 2.16%, respectively, on recognition rates, compared with current SAR target recognition methods.

Abstract:This paper studies the problem of radar target recognition based on radar cross section (RCS) observation sequence. First, the authors compute the discrete wavelet transform of RCS observation sequence and extract a valid statistical feature vector containing five components. These five components represent five different features of the radar target. Second, the authors establish a set-valued model to represent the relation between the feature vector and the authenticity of the radar target. By set-valued identification method, the authors can estimate the system parameter, based on which the recognition criteria is given. In order to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed recognition method, extensive simulations are given finally assuming that the true target is a cone frustum and the RCS of the false target is normally distributed. The results show that the set-valued identification method has a higher recognition rate than the traditional fuzzy classification method and evidential reasoning method.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method for the intelligent detection of high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) targets. This method cascades the adaptive constant false alarm (CFAR) detector variability index (VI) with the convolutional neural network (CNN) to form a cascade detector (VI)CFAR-CNN. First, the (VI)CFAR algorithm is used for the first-level detection of the range–Doppler (RD) spectrum; based on this result, the two-dimensional window slice data are extracted using the window with the position of the target on the RD spectrum as the center, and input into the CNN model to carry out further target and clutter identification. When the detection rate of the detector reaches a certain level and cannot be further improved due to the convergence of the CNN model, this paper uses a dual-detection maps fusion method to compensate for the loss of detection performance. First, the optimized parameters are used to perform the weighted fusion of the dual-detection maps, and then, the connected components in the fused detection map are further processed to achieve an independent (VI)CFAR to compensate for the (VI)CFAR-CNN detection results. Due to the difficulty in obtaining HFSWR data that include comprehensive and accurate target truth values, this paper adopts a method of embedding targets into the measured background to construct the RD spectrum dataset for HFSWR. At the same time, the proposed method is compared with various other methods to demonstrate its superiority. Additionally, a small amount of automatic identification system (AIS) and radar correlation data are used to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of this method on completely measured HFSWR data.

Abstract:A novel radar target recognition method based on the deep one-dimensional residual-inception network is proposed for a high-resolution range profile (HRRP). The traditional methods based on shallow models can hardly extract the complete information of the targets HRRP from different angles. The deep models, such as sparse autoencoder, have been adopted to solve this problem. However, these deep models with a huge amount of parameters require more training samples to guarantee the generalization performance. To solve the above-mentioned problem, a model based on the one-dimensional convolutional kernel and a pooling layer is proposed. It is worth noting that the one-dimensional convolutional kernel and pooling operation have the potential to overcome the translation sensitivity and target aspect sensitivity of the HRRP, and both of them can greatly reduce the parameters and improve the generalization performance of the model. In addition, a new loss function is proposed to further enhance the separability of features. The experimental results show that compared with other four deep models, the proposed model can achieve a good performance in recognition accuracy and robustness.

Abstract:In the passive bistatic radar (PBR) system,methods exist to address the issue of detecting weak targets without being influenced by non-ideal factors from adjacent strong targets. These methods utilize the sparsity in the delay-Doppler domain of the cross ambiguity function (CAF) to detect weak targets. However, the modeling and solving of this method involve substantial memory consumption and computational complexity. To address these challenges, this paper establishes a target detection model for PBR based on batch processing of sparse representation and recovery. This model partitions the CAF into blocks, identifies blocks requiring processing based on the presence of targets, and improves the construction and utilization of the measurement matrix. This results in a reduction in the computational complexity and memory resource requirements for sparse representation and recovery, and provides favorable conditions for parallel execution of the algorithm. Experimental results indicate that the proposed approach increases the number of blocks by a factor of four, and reduces the number of real multiplications by approximately an order of magnitude. Hence, compared with the traditional approach, the proposed approach enables fast and stable detection of weak targets.

High-resolution Sparse Representation and Its Applications in Radar Moving Target Detection

Abstract:To address difficulties in radar signal processing, the effective and efficient detection of lowobservable moving targets in complex environments is an ongoing research hotspot. On the one hand, a signal may be extremely weak due to strong clutter and the complex motion of a target, making it hard to separate them in the time and frequency domains. On the other hand, complex coherent integration methods and the heavy computational burden of long-time integration represent challenges for improving radar detection performance with limited resources. High-resolution sparse representation can separate clutter from a moving target with respect to signal sparsity, and can be regarded as an extension of traditional transform-based moving target detection methods. This method has promising application prospects due to the advantages of its high time-frequency resolution, anti-noise property, robustness, and suitability for the analysis of multi-signals. In this paper, we systematically review conventional radar moving target detection methods. Then, we summarize their applications, including sparse representation in clutter property analysis, suppression, moving target detection, signature extraction, and time-frequency analysis. Next, we consider future developments. Finally, we provide some results based on real datasets and existing research.
A Multi-scale Radar HRRP Target Recognition Method Based on Pyramid Depthwise Separable Convolution Network

Abstract:Radar high resolution range profile (HRRP) contains important structural features such as target size and scattering center distribution, which has attracted extensive attention in the field of radar target recognition. In order to solve the problem of feature extraction and recognition in HRRP target recognition, we propose an HRRP target recognition method based on one-dimensional Pyramid Depthwise Separable Convolutional (PyDSC) neural network. For the processed data, pyramid convolution is selected, and convolution kernels of different sizes are used on different input channels, which can better extract the features of different scales and improve the overall recognition ability. At the same time, Depthwise Separable Convolution (DSC) technology is applied to PyConv network, a standard convolution operation is divided into two steps: deep convolution and point convolution, which can reduce the network complexity, reduce the amount of parameters and improve the speed of HRRP target recognition. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through experiments. The experimental results show that: 1) compared with the other three convolutional neural networks, our proposed PyDSC can significantly improve the recognition accuracy with a small increase in overhead; 2) Compared with the original PyConv, PyDSC can effectively reduce the complexity of the model.

Abstract:Radar Automatic Target Recognition (RATR) based on high-resolution range profile (HRRP) has received intensive attention in recent years. In practice, RATR usually needs not only to recognize in-library samples but also to reject out-of-library samples. However, most rejection methods lack a specific and accurate description of the underlying distribution of HRRP, which limits the effectiveness of the rejection task. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel rejection method for HRRP, named Deep Multi-modal Support Vector Data Description (DMMSVDD). On the one hand, it forms a more compact rejection boundary with the Gaussian mixture model in consideration of the high-dimensional and multi-modal structure of HRRP. On the other hand, it captures the global temporal information and channel-dependent information with a dual attention module to gain more discriminative structured features, which are optimized jointly with the rejection boundary. In addition, a semi-supervised extension is proposed to refine the boundary with available out-of-library samples. Experimental results based on measured data show that the proposed methods demonstrate significant improvement in the HRRP rejection performance.

Abstract:In the radar automatic target recognition filed, extracting representative features from the radar high resolution range profile (HRRP) is the key issues, which determines the accuracy and reliability of radar target recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel stacked discriminative auto-encoder(S-disAE), the center loss is integrated into auto-encoder, it can force the learned feature with large distance close to their class feature representation center, so as to reduce the intra-class variations while keeping the features of different classes separable. In pre-training stage of our discriminative auto-encoder(disAE), we combine the mean square error loss and center loss to learn the main factors of input raw data and minimize the intra-class variations of the feature, in fine-tuning stage, we also combine the softmax cross entropy loss and center loss to improve the classification accuracy. We conduct several experiments on the simulated HRRP data, the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can extract discriminant features and improve the HRRP recognition accuracy.
