Abstract:In conventional fast-ramp-based target detection schemes for the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems, all chirp sequences are performed fully on two-dimensional fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) to estimate range and velocity of a target, and all range-Doppler cells are scanned by the two-dimensional (2-D) cell-averaging constant false alarm rate (CA-CFAR) detector to extract valid targets against background noise. This results in an extremely high computational complexity. To decrease the complexity while maintaining a desired performance, this article proposes a target detection scheme based on distributed one-dimensional (1-D) CA-CFAR and region-of-interest (ROI) preprocessing, which performs Doppler-FFT only for range ROI cells and scans only Doppler ROI cells to extract pretargets. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme significantly decreases complexity and simultaneously improves detection performance in terms of detection probability, figure of merit (FoM), and CFAR loss, as compared with the conventional schemes. The advantages of the proposed scheme over the conventional ones are further verified by field tests under multitarget scenario, using our recently developed FMCW radar with high angular resolution.

Abstract:In this paper,an improved dynamic programming based track-before-detect algorithm is proposed to detect weak target,whose track may be discontinuous due to the range ambiguity for high pulse repetition frequency(HPRF) radar applications.In the new algorithm,the latter successive states are estimated and the search strategy is improved.Firstly,the latter successive states are estimated and then the continuity of track is judged.Secondly,a best tentative track path selection is made recursively for each scan based on measures of target strength using a dynamic programming process.The improved algorithm is used to detect the target in the case of range ambiguity.As demonstrated by simulation results,this method can improve the detection performance of weak target.Therefore it is feasible and effective.

Abstract:The detection and tracking of moving targets in a low SNR environment are critical in the context of target tracking.The track-before-detect(TBD)technique is an effective method to detect and track dim targets.Different TBD algorithms have different characteristics in detection/tracking performances and computational complexity.Both dynamic model and measurement model of target are defined for the application in HPRF-PD radar.The principles and implementation steps of two TBD algorithms based on dynamic programming algorithm(DPA)and particle filter(PF)are given.The performances of detecting and tracking targets and computational complexities of these two algorithms are compared through simulation experiment.Simulation result shows that the DPA-TBD has lower computation cost and is easy for implementation while getting better tracking performance.And the detection performance of PF-TBD is better when the SNR is low.

Abstract:Range ambiguity is a common matter of PD(Pulse Doppler) radar.In this paper,an improved pulse waveform,i.e. pulse position modulation(PPM) waveform,is proposed.This paper firstly describes the structure of this waveform,the principle of non-fuzzy distance,and receiving method.Then its performances of anti-blind and anti-jamming are analyzed.This waveform combined with shunt treatment is used to solve the range ambiguity in the paper.The PPM waveform,which is compatible with processor architecture of conventional PD radar,is easy to implement coherent processing.So it can be used in the present radar system.Finally,the simulation result proves the feasibility of this waveform and advantages compared to conventional waveform.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of simultaneously detecting and tracking multiple targets using dynamic programming (DP) based track-before-detect (DP-TBD) with reference to low pulse repetition frequency (PRF) surveillance radars. The Doppler ambiguity phenomenon in the low PRF radars is the primary cause which complicates the tracking process. In the range-apparent Doppler plane, target states with different velocities may correspond to the same measurement, thus multiple modes are formed in the posterior density, resulting in a more challenging estimation problem. In this work, we propose an efficient multi-target DP-TBD algorithm suitable for low PRF surveillance radars. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively repress the ghost trajectories due to the multi-modality of posterior density and correctly estimate the true target states and target number.

Abstract:A lot of work has been done for applying Dynamic programming (DP) algorithm in weak moving target detection and tracking. Most of them are based on IR image sequence and a constant target velocity is assumed. The goal of this paper is to apply DP algorithm to radar Doppler detection problems. Radar returns from multiple range cells are arranged as a set of Doppler-range images to fit in DP imagery detection model. Trajectories in image sequence are modeled as states sets. Then DP algorithm is applied to integrate measurements along possible target trajectories, returning as possible targets those trajectories for which the measurement sum, or merit function, exceeds a threshold. Low SNR target that maneuvers among several range cells can be detected through such long-term integration. Under a practical set of radar parameters, good detection performances are presented that at about 100% detection probability, about 7dB SNR gain is achieved through 15-frame DP non-coherent integration.
Efficient Radar Detection of Weak Manoeuvring Targets Using a Coarse‐to‐fine Strategy

Abstract:Detection of weak manoeuvring targets has always been an important yet challenging task for radar signal processing. One primary reason is that target variable motions within a coherent processing interval generate energy migrations across multiple resolution bins, which severely deteriorate the parameter estimation performance. The problem is compounded by an increasingly complex surveillance environment, as well as more affordable and pervasive than ever small targets such as drones. In this work, a coarse-to-fine strategy for the detection of weak manoeuvring targets is designed. First, a coarse estimation of the chirp parameter in an extended unambiguous range using a novel coprime segmented discrete polynomial-phase transform is coherently integrated and derived. Sparse fractional Fourier transform is then employed to refine the coarse estimation at a significantly reduced computational complexity. The proposed scheme achieves an efficient and reliable weak target detection, while requires no a priori knowledge on the motion parameters, which is verified by the simulation results.

Abstract:In this study, the authors present a dynamic programming (DP)-based tracking-before-detect (DP TBD) procedure with reference to a low pulse repetition frequency (PRF) surveillance radar framework. In order to avoid non-linear transformation and meanwhile exploit the ambiguous Doppler information, which is eliminated in most of the literature, the authors model the target dynamics in the measurement coordinates defined by range and apparent Doppler. The target state evolutions in the range-apparent Doppler domain are considered as a hybrid system with the ambiguous number deemed as mode variable. Ambiguity number (or mode) transitions are modelled as state dependent. The authors present a DP TBD method for joint maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation of the target trajectory in the range-apparent Doppler maps and the corresponding ambiguity sequence, both assumptions of known and unknown nuisance parameters (target power and noise variance) are considered. The detection and tracking performance of the proposed procedure are investigated under several system settings. The effect of the prior uncertainty of the nuisance parameters on the performance is also studied. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Abstract:The performance of wideband radar detectors can be further improved if the features of a target's high-resolution range profile (HRRP) are fully utilized. In this paper, a target adaptive double threshold detection method is proposed. First, the amplitude distribution parameters of the HRRP's range cells are extracted for data generation, and the detection probability is statistically calculated. The online gradient descent method is then used to adaptively adjust the second thresholds of the double threshold detector, thereby improving the detection performance with a given constant false alarm rate. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified using two sets of measured data. The proposed algorithm exhibits superior detection performance compared to traditional detection algorithms for range-spread targets.

Abstract:Passive bistatic radar (PBR) has attracted widespread attention for its capabilities in dealing with the threat of electronic countermeasure, stealth technology, and antiradiation missile. However, passive detection methods are limited by unknown characteristics of the uncooperative illuminators, and conventional radar signal processing algorithms cannot be conducted accurately, especially when the carrier frequency of the transmitting signal is agile and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the scattered wave of target is low. To address the above problems, this paper presents a novel weak target detection method based on probability histogram, which is then tested by a field experiment. Preliminary results indicate the feasibility of the proposed method in weak target detection.

Abstract:Parameterized detection methods for high resolution radar target have the mathematical models mismatch problem. On the other hand, most parameterized range extended target detection algorithms are relatively complex and need a large amount of calculation. Thus these methods cannot satisfy the real-time processing requirements in engineering. In order to overcome the disadvantage of mathematical model mismatch and improve processing efficiency, this paper proposes a novel non-parametric double threshold detection method based on modified strong scattering point position information correlation. Measured data test shows that the algorithm can effectively detect the target and reduce the computational complexity.

Abstract:Airborne radar plays a crucial role in detecting aerial targets, but its detection capability can be significantly affected by strong ground clutter when operating in down-looking mode. The range-Doppler (RD) results of ground clutter in airborne radar may overlap the range-Doppler results of the targets, causing target occlusion and rendering them undetectable. In addition to target detection, accurate extraction of target parameters is also of great importance. Due to the high-speed movement of the airborne platform, targets may exhibit range-Doppler ambiguity, necessitating the use of appropriate methods to resolve the range-Doppler ambiguity. Aiming at the problem of target occlusion by clutter with range-Doppler two-dimensional ambiguity during airborne radar down-looking target detection, this paper conducts a study on the detection of airborne radar down-looking targets based on orthogonal signals combined with pulse repetition frequency (PRF) staggered transmission. An optimization method is employed to design multiple sets of PRF values, aiming to reduce the radar blind zone. The range-Doppler two-dimensional ambiguity of targets is resolved using multiple sets of PRF, and coherent processing is performed on the corresponding echoes using the transmission intervals, maximizing the utilization of radar transmission energy. This approach enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and improves the detection performance and parameter estimation accuracy, particularly for low SNR targets. The superiority of the proposed approach is demonstrated through simulation experiments.

An Adaptive Weak Target Detection Method Using Joint Detection and Tracking for Compact HFSWR

Abstract:The low transmission power and low signal-to-noise ratio increase the challenges of target detection for compact high-frequency surface wave radar. Track fragmentation often occurs due to missed detections during the tracking procedure. An adaptive weak target detection method using joint detection and tracking is suggested to enhance its detection performance. The tracker will communicate back the current target prediction state to the detector when it discovers that a target track cannot be connected to any new plot. The detector establishes a local detection gate on the Range-Doppler (R-D) spectrum, and the detection background is perceived using the binary hypothesis test. According to the detected background, an appropriate detection threshold adjustment method is used to lower the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) detection threshold and determines whether a weak target can be detected. The newly generated plot is obtained after the azimuth estimate and transmitted to the tracker for additional processing if a target is detected. The experimental results with field data reveal that the track length obtained by the proposed method is 29.76% longer than that of the detection before tracking methods, and the tracking time increases by 19.25 minutes on average.

Abstract:This article considers the detection and tracking of weak targets in multiple pulse repetition frequency (multi-PRF) radars using the track-before-detect (TBD) technique. By exploring the measurement independence among different PRFs, we decompose the joint multi-PRF and multiframe optimization problem into several lower dimensional maximizations, each of which corresponds to an intra-PRF multiframe processing. An efficient two-stage TBD procedure with a parallel structure is proposed for the multi-PRF radars. Specifically, in the first stage, a constraint inequality is derived analytically and used to decouple the measurement ambiguities from the nonlinear conversion relationship between polar and Cartesian coordinates. The intra-PRF multiframe integration can then be carried out concurrently using the ambiguous measurements and the target-like measurement plot sequences with different ambiguities are extracted for different PRFs. In the second stage, a covariance combination fusion-based inter-PRF joint disambiguation and estimation algorithm is proposed to solve the ambiguities of the plot sequences and output high-accuracy target tracks. Simulation experiments show that the proposed algorithm can provide a good detection performance and higher tracking accuracy with much lower complexity.

Abstract:Bistatic radar uses the scattered signal of the target to detect and locate the target. It requires long observation time to detect the moving target because the energy of maneuvering weak target is very low. But it is hard to ensure the signal coherence over long observation time. Aiming at the above problems, a maneuvering weak target detection algorithm based on sub-aperture division and hybrid integration is proposed. Specifically, by dividing the whole integration time to keep signal coherence in the sub-aperture, axis rotation (AR) -fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) algorithm is used to realize the coherent integration of target in each sub-aperture, and dynamic programming (DP) method is applied to perform the non-coherent integration between sub-apertures over long observation time. This method can effectively accumulate target energy and detect maneuvering weak target. Finally, the reliability of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulations.

Abstract:In radar multi-target detection,the weak target is almost covered by the strong target nearby be-cause of its low energy,which badly influences the detection of weak targets.A novel detection algorithm for weak radar targets is proposed to cope with the situation above.First,the strong target echo is integrated co-herently and its amplitude is estimated by the combination of Keystone transform and the least square filter.Af-ter that,the strong target echo is reconstructed and then cleaned from the original echo.Finally the remaining echo is integrated coherently for the detection of weak targets.The experimental results validate the effective-ness and advantages of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:For airborne two-antenna(one transmitting and two receiving)PD radar model,the low altitude moving targets received by main beam were mixed with strong clutter.Aiming at clutter suppression and moving target detection,a method was suggested to estimate radial velocity based on two segment DPCA.The formula was derived in detail.Finally,for moving targets with different velocities,simulation was carried out.The agreement of the final simulation results with the theoretical analysis indicates that this method could be used effectively to suppress clutter and estimate radial velocity of moving target whether it appered in mainlobe spectrum or in sidelobe spectrum.

Abstract:High pulse repetition frequency(HPRF) radar has range ambiguity problem when tracking target.It is required to detect target by at least two frames in a dwell for the current methods to resolve range ambiguity.Although recently proposed multiple hypothesis tracking algorithm can overcome the deficiency of the current methods,it will resolve incorrectly range ambiguity when ambiguity interval changes.Therefore,a new multiple hypothesis tracking algorithm is proposed which realizes target tracking by choosing the correct hypothesis interval based on the principle of the minimal statistic distance,so the shortcoming of the current multiple hypothesis are overcome.Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to the existing multiple hypothesis method in tracking performance on convergence time and tracking precision.

Abstract:The subspace projection approach is used for interference suppression and weak target detection in passive radar systems.The signal received in the echo channel is projected onto the subspace orthogonal to both multi-path interference and strong targets subspace.With this method,the computational load is very high due to the large size of the projection matrix.To reduce the computational load,an improved weak target detection method which replaces the large size projection matrix with several small size projection matrices is introduced.First,the signal received in the echo channel is projected onto the orthogonal complement of multi-path interference subspace.Then it is continuously projected onto the orthogonal complement of strong targets subspace.With respect to the subspace projection approach,the improved approach performances comparable capability in both interference suppression and weak target detection with computational simplicity.Finally its effectiveness is illuminated by simulation results.

Abstract:In the application of radar dim target detection,dynamic programming(DP) is an effective method in integrating target energy.This paper analyzed the characters of images of dim radar multi-target with DP,and achieved multi-target detection by using extreme value theory.The probability of false alarm and the probability of detection have been analyzed theoretically.The results of the simulation show that the method brings 4～5dB gain of noncoherent integration compared with traditional detection method.
