Abstract:Here, we describe the synthesis of novel titania nanosheets controllably doped with binary transition metal ions and their layer-by-layer self-assembly. The tailored Mn and Fe doping in exfoliated Ti 0.6 Mn x /2 Fe (0.8- x )/2 O 2 ( x = 0.0–0.4) nanosheets is achieved by systematically changing the molar ratio of Mn/Fe in K 0.8 Ti 1.2 Mn x Fe 0.8- x O 4 using a codoping strategy. The protonated layered crystals exhibit a delaminated behavior in the tetrabutylammonium hydroxide solution and are exfoliated into colloidal single sheets, which are characterized by a large lateral size and a thickness in molecular dimension. The resulted nanosheets are able to be layer-by-layer deposited with oppositely charged polymers into a composite organic/inorganic system.
Controllable Hydrothermal Synthesis, Optical and Photocatalytic Properties of TiO2 Nanostructures

Abstract:Different surface morphologies of TiO2 thin films were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method on Ti substrates through changing reaction time. The microstructure, composition, optical properties and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 thin films were systematically investigated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. As the reaction time increases, anatase structure and brookite structure of TiO2 films respectively increases and decreases, corresponding to surface morphology changes from irregular structure to regular geometrical shape structure. These structural changes are accompanied by significant variations of optical properties and photocatalytic properties including a widening of the band gap from 2.86 to 3.19 eV, photocatalytic degradation efficiency from 92.5 to 98.1% and photocatalytic degradation rate from 0.032 to 0.048 min(-1). Among all samples, TiO2-1 shows the best photocatalytic properties. Compositional analysis indicates that TiO2 surface layer contains Ti and O elements, the ratio of Ti:O is 1:2.28 which is close to the atom ratio of TiO2. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Few-layers MoS 2 sensitized Ag–TiO 2 nanocomposite thin film for enhancing photocatalytic activity

Abstract:The novel few-layers MoS 2 sensitized Ag–TiO 2 were prepared through hydrothermal method, photoreduction method and spin-coating method, respectively. The microstructure, surface morphology, chemical composition and ultraviolet–visible absorbance of the samples were investigated systematically. The results indicated that the Ag nanoparticles and few-layers MoS 2 were deposited successfully on the surface of TiO 2 NRAs. The visible photocatalytic activity was estimated by degradation of methylene blue solution. The results indicated that the photocatalytic properties of MoS 2 /Ag–TiO 2 was larger than pure TiO 2 NRAs and Ag–TiO 2 . The significantly increased photocatalytic properties was attributed to the stronger visible light capture capability and the enhanced electron–hole pairs separation.
Mo-doped titania films: Preparation, characterization and application for splitting water

Abstract:A series of Mo-doped TiO2 films are prepared on quartz substrate by the layer-by-layer assembly method. The films are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scan electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis spectrophotometry and fluorescence spectrophotometry. The results show that TiO2 phase transformation from anatase to rutile is promoted with higher dopant concentration. The surface oxygen vacancies (SOVs) of Mo-doped TiO2 films bind photoinduced electrons to further give rise to new photoluminescence (PL) signals, and the intensities of PL signals are in proportion to SOVs content of the films. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 film is evaluated by measuring H-2 evolution from water and the effects of SOVs of Mo-doped TiO2 films on photocatalytic processes are investigated along with their inherent relationships.

Abstract:TiO2 thin films doped with different contents of Mo were deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering. Surface morphology, crystal structure, elements' valence states and absorption edge of each sample were characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible spectrometer. Cyclic voltammetry was utilized to study the photoelectric properties while the photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation rate of methylene blue. The result indicates that an appropriate concentration of Mo could extend the absorption edge of TiO2 film to visible range remarkably. When the content reached 0.9 at.%, with a xenon lamp we observed the strongest photocurrent as well as the best photocatalytic property while under the illumination of strong visible light, a photocurrent 10 times the undoped sample appeared. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy observed the fastest speed of carrier transfer as doping content increased to 0.9 at.%, while higher doping amount would precipitate carrier recombination due to a large number of lattice defects.

Abstract:Template-free synthesis of TiO 2 architectures with controlled morphology evolution has been developed through solvothermal reaction in 1,4-dioxane. By simply varying the molar ratio of the concentrated HCl over Titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) from 0 to 5.0, series of morphologies including nanoparticle-built microspheres, nanoparticle-built microspheres decorated with nanorods, nanorod cauliflowers, and nanorod dendrites have been obtained. The influence of several key factors on the morphology control of TiO 2 has been systematically investigated. These parameters include the mass (molar) ratio of HCl/TTIP, solvothermal reaction temperature and time, acid species (concentrated nitric acid), and solvent type (tetrahydrofuran and 1,3-dioxane). The mechanism for the formation of the TiO 2 architectures with controlled morphology evolution has been discussed. The application of the TiO 2 architectures as water splitting photocatalyst and lithium–ion battery anode has been demonstrated. And the corresponding structure–property correlation has been discussed.

Abstract:Most recently, much attention has been devoted to photocatalytic materials that may help to solve the global energy crisis and may provide environmental protection. Herein, novel cocatalysts based on few layered MoS2 and TiO2 nanomaterials have been designed by growing MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of TiO2 nanospheres through a facile hydrothermal method. The method allows the formation of TiO2/MoS2 core–shell heterostructures of uniform morphologies and stable structure and provides a good control over shell thickness. The mechanism that forms these heterostructures is discussed in detail. In addition, as cocatalyst, MoS2 nanosheets can enlarge the light harvesting window to include visible light and improve the photocatalytic ability of TiO2. Using Rhodamine B as the model, the resultant heterostructure is demonstrated to possess excellent and stable photocatalytic activity in the degradation of organic pollutants under visible light illumination. The TiO2/MoS2 heterostructures possess this catalytic activity due to their large surface area and their excellent interface for separating holes and electrons. Therefore, this novel heterostructure nanomaterials possess potential applications in water treatment, degradation of dye pollutants, and environmental cleaning.
Chelating Coordination Modulation Method for the Synthesis of Ti-MOF Single Crystals

Abstract:Despite titanium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ti-MOFs) are promising as efficient photocatalysts, the high reactivity of titanium ions makes the synthesis and structure determination of new Ti-MOFs quite challenging. In this study, we propose a chelating coordination modulation (CCM) method for the synthesis of Ti-MOF single crystals by using molecules with chelating coordination groups as modulator. Thanks to this method, three Ti-MOFs (FIR-117-119) have been obtained and structurally determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), validating the universality of this approach. By capturing the intermediate and determining its single crystal structure, the role of modulator in the growth of Ti-MOF single crystal is clarified: the use chelating coordination molecule as modulator and competitive ligand slows down the reaction rate through forming Ti-Modulator key intermediates, which balance the formation of Ti-MOFs and growth of single crystals. Furthermore, FIR-119 exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light due to its good light adsorption ability with narrow bandgap. These results highlight the potential of the chelating coordination modulation method in the synthesis of new photoactive Ti-MOFs and their single crystals.

Abstract:We report a simple scheme to fabricate organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructures with extraordinary morphologies by one-step spin coating, using a PS-b-PEO diblock copolymer as template coupled with sol-gel chemistry. The shape and size of the titania nanoobject can be fine-tuned by controlling the amount of sol-gel precursor relative to PS-b-PEO and the composition of the precursor. Ordered arrays of nanoscopic titania objects such as nanodots, nanobowls, and nanonetworks were obtained from the initial hybrid nanostructures by removing the organic matrix by UV treatment. Photocatalytic activities of the resulting titania nanoobjects were investigated in terms of the degradation of a typical dye.{graphics}

Abstract:The design and fabrication of nanostructures based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) have attracted much attention because of their low cost, non-toxicity, stability, and potential applications in industry and technology. Recently, one-dimensional (1D) structured titanates have been used as titanium source to prepare TiO2 nanostructures with various crystalline phases, shapes, sizes, exposed facets, and hierarchical structures. Among the synthetic strategies, hydrothermal method is a facile route to controllable preparation of well-crystalline TiO2 in one step. Herein, we review our recent progress in transferring 1D titanates into TiO2 nanostructures through hydrothermal method, including the transformation mechanism and applications.

Abstract:Titanium (Ti)‐based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted intensive attention due to the low toxicity, high earth's crust abundance, and unique photocatalytic properties of Ti elements. Great efforts have been devoted to the synthesis of novel architectures and their potential applications involving photocatalysis. However, Ti‐MOFs are still very scarce owing to their challenges in controlling the Ti chemistry in the reaction system. Until now, some significant results have been achieved, which may shed new insight into the future investigation of Ti‐MOFs. Herein, some representative researches in Ti‐MOFs are summarized and reviewed from the following four aspects: first, various synthetic strategies for preparing Ti‐MOFs are introduced; second, diverse structures containing multi‐connected ligands are presented in detail; third, the potential photocatalytic applications of Ti‐based MOFs involving H2 production, CO2 reduction, H2O2 production, N2 fixation, remediation of organic and inorganic pollutants, as well as organic transformation reaction and photocatalytic sensors are discussed; finally, perspectives on current challenges and emerging opportunities in this research field are discussed. Through summarizing this specific type of MOF, this review is expected to stimulate researchers' interest for in‐depth investigation of novel structures synthesis, as well as new applications and concepts in these intriguing fields.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) polymorphs photocatalysts containing two or more crystal phases have customarily been synthesized at high temperature using complicated procedures or expensive equipment, accompanied by the formation of by-products. Therefore, here, we propose an effective acid-regulated hydrolysis and condensation of titanium cation strategy to directly synthesize mesoporous TiO2 with controllable phase junctions. In the method, poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDADMAC) is used as the structure directing agent to produce mesostructure, and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is used as the acid regulator and coordination agent to adjust the hydrolysis and condensation modes of Ti4+, thereby controlling the crystal structure and phase junctions of synthesized mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs. Furthermore, since the heterophase junctions and mesostructure effectively improve the separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-holes, the obtained R74B26 with unique brookite and rutile phase junctions owns the highest photocatalytic activity among all obtained samples, the evolution rate of H2 is 8.98 mmol h‐1−1 g−1. This work will open up new perspectives toward the synthesis of mesoporous polycrystalline material for various potential applications.

Abstract:A serial of surfactant-templated mesoporous TiO2 films with the thickness over several micrometers have been successfully synthesized by one-step dip-coating and subsequent evaporation induced self-assembly method. Three different pre-condensed TiO2 sols in the presence of surfactant (Pluronic F127) micelles with high viscosities were employed as the precursors for dip-coating. By treating the films in liquid paraffin as “shape protector” at certain high temperature for sufficient time, thick mesoporous films can be kept crack-free after calcinations. By employing the size-controlled titanium-oxo clusters in the sols as building blocks for self-assembly, the final obtained films represent tunable mesostructures. The mesoscopic characteristics of the films, such as Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas, pore size distributions and pore wall crystallizations, have been comparatively studied. The results demonstrate that such tunable mesoscopic characteristics are greatly dependent on the structural and shape parameters of the initial formed inorganic clusters.
Morphology Control and Photocatalytic Activity of Tio2 Film

Abstract:Using anodized pure aluminum, 3102 aluminum alloy and 6061 aluminum alloy as the templates, TiO2 thin films were prepared through a liquid deposition method. The TiO2 nanotuhes fabricated on the 3102 aluminum alloy substrate had one-dimensional tubular structures, similar to that obtained on pure aluminum substrate, whereas that prepared on the 6061 aluminum alloy substrate had bamboo-like structure with holes. It was found that the growth of TiO2 nanotubes or nanorods was correlated with AAO templates. The morphology control and morphology transformation mechanism were discussed. The results showed that the deposition temperature in the range of 30-40 = C was favorable for the formation of TiO2 nanoarrays, The photocatalytic capability of the TiO2 films prepared on the aluminum alloy is superior to that of the films fabricated on the pure aluminum. The main alloying elements Si was doped into TiO2 lattice to form Ti-O-Si bonds, resulting in the enhanced photocatalytic activity.
Tuning the Photoluminescence of MoS2/TiO2 by Molecular Self-Assembly Films

Abstract:Self-assembly films have demonstrated an efficient method to functionalize the surfaces of variously different materials. In this work, we preliminarily explored the modification effect of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA) on the optical properties of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) grown on a rutile titanium dioxide (r-TiO2) (110) single crystal surface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterizations directly revealed that the PCDA molecules self-assemble into the same lamella structure as on pure MoS2, which can be further polymerized into conductive polydiacetylene (PDA) chains under ultraviolet light (UV) irradiation. Detailed photoluminescence (PL) measurements observed clearly increased luminescence of negative trions (A−) yet decreased total intensities for MoS2 upon adding the PCDA assembly, which is further enhanced after stimulating its polymerization. These results indicate that the PCDA assembly and its polymerization have different electron donability to MoS2, which hence provides a deepened understanding of the interfacial interactions within a multicomponent system. Our work also demonstrates the self-assembly of films as a versatile strategy to tune the electronic/optical properties of hybridized two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:High-temperature treatment of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising route to prepare a variety of functional materials with diverse applications. However, it is challenging to prepare highly crystalline metal oxides such as TiO2 with controllable structures and morphologies via direct calcination of MOFs. Here, we report a soft interface adaptive transformation strategy for the synthesis of MOFs derived TiO2 nanoparticles with elaborate structures. The soft interface is constructed by coating a thin silica layer on the external surface of Ti-MOFs with an octahedral morphology. This soft interface can partially adapt to the significant shrinkage and counteract the contraction force during the MOFs-to-TiO2 conversion. As a result, TiO2 hollow octahedrons are formed with a concave morphology, high specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancy sites, and consequently enhanced photocatalytic activity, which cannot be obtained by direct calcination or coating a thick/rigid silica layer. The opposite impact of the interface on MOFs derived metal oxides and carbon materials is further elucidated. This contribution provides new understandings in the synthesis of MOFs derived functional materials.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide films with large-area 2D ordered pore structure were prepared on glass substrate via a sol dip-coating latex template method. By simply controlling the concentration of the precursor sol, TiO2 array films with different morphologies, such as hollow sphere shell, bowl, pot, and ring arrays were obtained. Such films have large-scale periodic feature and large specific areas, which is promising to be useful in the optical, gas-sensing, catalysis applications.

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO(2) with a hierarchically 3D dendrimeric nanostructure comprised of nanoribbon building units has been synthesized via a spontaneous self-formation process from various titanium alkoxides. These hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures can be obtained by a very facile, template-free method, by simply dropping a titanium butoxide precursor into methanol solution. The novel configuration of the mesoporous TiO(2) nanostructure in nanoribbon building units yields a high surface area. The calcined samples show significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity and degradation rates owing to the mesoporosity and their improved crystallinity after calcination. Furthermore, the 3D dendrimeric architectures can be preserved after phase transformation from amorphous TiO(2) to anatase or rutile, which occurs during calcination. In addition, the spontaneous self-formation process of mesoporous TiO(2) with hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures from the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of titanium butoxide in methanol has been followed by in situ optical microscopy (OM), revealing the secret on the formation of hierarchically 3D dendrimeric nanostructures. Moreover, mesoporous TiO(2) nanostructures with similar hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures can also be obtained using other titanium alkoxides. The porosities and nanostructures of the resultant products were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and N(2) adsorption-desorption measurements. The present work provides a facile and reproducible method for the synthesis of novel mesoporous TiO(2) nanoarchitectures, which in turn could herald the fabrication of more efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Hybridization with oxide semiconductors provides a versatile strategy for tailoring physicochemical properties of two-dimensional materials (2DMs). However, the direct impacts of specific interface interactions have not yet been very well categorized, in particular at an atomic level. In the present work, through a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, we successfully grew monolayer MoS2 flakes on an atomically smooth rutile TiO2 single crystal with (100), (110), and (001) terminations. We found that the fabrication of comparable high-quality MoS2 on all of the TiO2 substrates can only be achieved via finely varying the growth parameters. Moreover, the photoluminescence of MoS2 also changes against the substrate terminations, showing a gradually reduced A(0)/A(-) exciton ratio following the sequence of (100) > (110) > (001). Detailed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements showed the same tendency for the binding energy shifts of both Ti and O in the MoS2/TiO2 samples, which were attributed to the varied dipole fields established at the MoS2/TiO2 interfaces. Our work not only reinforces the important role of interface charge redistribution in tailoring the properties of hybridized systems but also emphasizes that the facet effect may be applied as an efficient strategy for optimizing the photocatalytic activities of compositional systems.
