Abstract:A multi-period bi-level integrated planning and scheduling model was formulated by considering demand and utility uncertainties in order to reduce the effects of uncertain factors in production process on production planning and scheduling.Demand and utility uncertainties were dealt with separately in planning and scheduling layers according to the difference of time scale.In planning layer,chance constraint stochastic programming was introduced to describe the demand uncertainty.An uncertain discrete-time linear programming model was formulated based on discrete-time modeling method.The fluctuations of production rate and deviations from the reference limits of inventory were considered.In scheduling layer,the fuzzy theory was utilized to describe the utility uncertainty.An uncertain continuoustime mixed-integer linear programming model related to multistage multipurpose batch process was formulated based on unit-specific event-based continuous-time modeling method.The bi-level planning and scheduling models were iteratively solved by rolling horizon optimization strategy.The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model wvas illustrated through a benchmark example from literatures.The proposed method can effectively reduce the effects of the two uncertainties and increase the utilization of equipments and utilities.

Abstract:Numerical control (NC) system is a hybrid-tasks system (HTS), which is made up of periodic real-time tasks, aperiodic real-time tasks and non-real-time tasks. To guarantee the time determin-ability and reliability of NC system, a HTS model describing all three kinks of task with temporal parameters tuple was established and the heuristic best-first search (BFS) algorithm was introduced to schedule tasks of this model. Then a fault-tolerance scheduling strategy based on rollback recovery and BFS algorithm was proposed to remove transient faults of system. Comparing to traditional fault-tolerance scheduling algorithm, the strategy presented in this paper is applied to schedule mixed and dependent tasks of NC system, and raises the level of resources utilization by reducing the cost of fault disposal. The validity of this proposed approach applied to NC system is verified in case study and algorithm simulation.
Hierarchical approach of planning and scheduling with demand uncertainty and utility disturbance

Abstract:A hierarchical structure of planning and scheduling is introduced in this paper to jointly address the demand uncertainty and utility disturbance. In planning layer, a chance constrained programming model is involved to describe demand uncertainty. In scheduling layer, a vari-period scheduling strategy is proposed to solve the mismatching between period of scheduling and duration time of utility disturbance. Complexity problem is also solved by the hierarchical structure and vari-period scheduling strategy. The planning problem is formulated by a linear programming model with certain confidence level that maximize the product profit with considering cost of backlog and changes in product process. Scheduling model is formulated by an integer nonlinear programming (INLP) with considering cost of shutdown and changes in product process. A case study oriented from process industry is introduced to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Abstract:A simulation-based optimization framework is proposed in this paper to solve process industry scheduling problem under demand and yield uncertainties.The scheduling scheme consists of processing capacities and operation modes of product units as well as separator parameters.A scheduling simulation model with probability distribution of demand and yield has been established.The optimal scheduling orders are obtained through multi-population genetic algorithm based on this model.Robustness and effectiveness are demonstrated by simulation result of a real-world refinery.

Abstract:Vehicle scheduling is a typical NP hard problem involving task assignment, time arrangement, personnel arrangement and route selection. Something unexpected often happens to affect the original plan. Transportation with uncertain events are discussed in details; an integer programming model is constructed to describe the vehicle scheduling problem. Regarding the uncertain events, firstly a result under certain situation is worked out, then the problem is re-optimized to revise the original result based on accident analysis. To deal with the difficulty of the solution, a heuristic and genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. The results show such problem can be solved effectively with the presented method.

Abstract:Given that the overlapping of jobs is permitted, the paper studies the scheduling and control of failure prone production systems, i.e. so-called settings with demand uncertainty and job overlaps. Because a variable demand resource is involved in the production and corrective maintenance control problems of the system, which switched randomly between zero and a maximum level, it is difficult to obtain the analytical solutions of the optimal single hedging point policy. An asymptotic optimal scheduling policy is presented and a double hedging point policy is offered to control simultaneously the production rate and the corrective maintenance rate of the system. The corresponding analytical solutions and approximate solutions are obtained. Considering the relationship of production, corrective maintenance and demand variable, an approximate optimal single hedging point control policy is proposed. Numerical results are presented.

Abstract:The process data were hard to obtain in existing scheduling methods for steam power system. A scheduling strategy under uncertainty was proposed to deal with the inaccurate data in steam power system. The inaccurate data was presented by triangular fuzzy number, and a fuzzy scheduling model was established. Then the fuzzy model was shifted to a deterministic mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model by using necessity measures and α-level method. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to identify the effects of the imprecise parameters. An example from a certain petrochemical complex was adopted. Results showed that the power demand was most sensitive in the system.

Abstract:Progressive hedging (PH) is a classical decomposition algorithm for solving multistage stochastic problems. However, due to the exponentially growing model size of real-world enterprise-wide optimization problems, critical issues arise when implementing PH in practice. In this work, we propose a novel PH-based algorithm to address integrated planning and scheduling problems under demand uncertainty in a general mathematical formulation. Strategies are proposed to accelerate and guarantee the convergence of the algorithm. Through application of the enhanced PH to solve variants of a typical state-task network example and a real-world ethylene plant case, computational results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms directly invoking commercial solvers and gets a better solution within nearly two-thirds of the direct solution time on a serial computer. The advantage of the multistage stochastic programming method is also demonstrated by comparing the model solution with the counterparts of an expected value-based deterministic model and a two-stage stochastic model.

Abstract:Production scheduling is an important part of manufacturing execution system. However, the effect of scheduling has not been evaluated timely. An online tracing method is proposed to guide production more effectively. By means of data analysis, information integration, online tracing and movement combination, it is available to restore the scheduling event and estimate the effect. Simulation results show a superior performance in crude oil processing.

Abstract:Green scheduling plays an important role in green manufacturing. However, the uncertain interference events, especially sudden changes of machine state, and the improvement of processing quality are ignored in green scheduling. They result in the current green scheduling is one-sided for green manufacturing. Therefore, this paper proposes an integrated method for intelligent green scheduling of the sustainable flexible workshop with edge computing considering uncertain machine state. Firstly, a multi-objective model for green scheduling is built and solved with the makespan, processing cost, processing quality and energy consumption as its optimisation objectives. Then, a hardware system for intelligent monitoring and diagnosis of machine state is established based on wireless sensor network (WSN), edge computing and artificial intelligence (AI). Finally, the diagnosis results of machine state provide feedback to the original green scheduling scheme and the corresponding real-time adjustment called green rescheduling is conducted to response to uncertain dynamic machine state. A case study of intelligent green scheduling where several machines fall into fault operation suddenly is employed to illustrate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed method, and it is compared with other multi-objective optimisation algorithms for green scheduling. The results indicate that the proposed method is superior to the rivals on this issue.

Abstract:A strategy for the integration of production planning and scheduling in refineries is proposed. This strategy relies on rolling horizon strategy and a two-level decomposition strategy. This strategy involves an upper level multiperiod mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model and a lower level simulation system, which is extended from our previous framework for short-term scheduling problems [Luo, C.P., Rong, G., “Hierarchical approach for short-term scheduling in refineries”, Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., 46, 3656-3668 (2007)]. The main purpose of this extended framework is to reduce the number of variables and the size of the optimization model and, to quicklyfind the optimal solution for the integrated planning/scheduling problem in refineries. Uncertainties are also considered in this article. An integrated robust optimization approach is introduced to cope with uncertain parameters with both continuous and discrete probability distribution.

Abstract:Normally, tasks are classified into real time and non real time according to temporal constraints for the processing and transmitting of these tasks, consequently the worst-case response time and average performance should be focused on them. However, in practical engineering context, partly violated temporal constraints can be tolerated if the violation meets certain distribution: Nevertheless, the loss-rate (within real time region, an instance of a task is regarded as loss if it violates its temporal constraint) under stable state or statistical real time can solve the problem in some extent, it can't include the permitted distribution of violation. For completely solving the problem, weakly-hard real time schedule theory or window-constraint real time schedule theory, which is used to investigate the problem related to allowing violation of instances over a finite range, consecutive instances or a time window, is proposed. In order to effectively utilize the fact that a practical application can tolerate some violations of temporal constraint under certain distribution, the fundamental research must be done from the aspects of specification of temporal constraint, schedule and schedulibility, and implementation, which are explained in detail in this paper.

Abstract:Uncertainty is an important characteristic of scheduling model for scale farm machinery operation organizing. Practice shows that scheduling model without considering uncertainties is nearly useless. Uncertain influence factors arisen from natural environment, society and economy, market and supply, and customer and behavior, exist widely, emerge frequently, and affect production deeply. Uncertainties interfere with the allocation of productive factors on temporal and spatial dimensions for farm machinery operation scheduling and management. Questionnaire for farm machinery organizations was designed and finished in 2014. Both occurrence frequency and influence degree for each factor were quantified. Four influence factors including operation location change, weather mutation, parts supply delay, and operation skill defects appear in both list of high occurrence and deep influence. Then results of questionnaire and results of specific investigation were used to study temporal and spatial scheduling model and system for farm machinery management. Three case studies are introduced. The first case is about the uncertainty and countermeasure of forage harvesters scheduling and monitoring for a professional forage plantation company. The second case is about the uncertainty and counter measure of cotton-picker scheduling and monitoring for a professional cotton picking company. And the third case is about the uncertainty and countermeasure of social service management for a professional cooperative. The cases show that the research has strong pertinence to deal with uncertainties and can improve management efficiency of farm machinery operation.

Abstract:Uncertainty has great impact on the original schedules of multi-shuttle Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RSs). When shuttle failure occurs during planning horizon, scheduling solution under deterministic circumstance will become infeasible and the reschedule work is needed. It will result into extra expense or loss. In our study, we propose a stochastic integer programming model to handle scheduling problem under shuttle failure in multi-shuttle AS/RS. Numerical experiments are designed to validate the robustness of our solution to tackle various uncertainty of shuttle failure. © 2018 IEEE.

Abstract:Distributionally robust optimization (DRO) is an emerging and effective method to address the inexactness of probability distributions of uncertain parameters in decision-making under uncertainty. We propose an effective DRO framework for planning and scheduling under demand uncertainties. A novel data-driven approach is proposed to construct ambiguity sets based on principal component analysis and first-order deviation functions, which help excavating accurate and useful information from uncertainty data. Moreover, it leads to mixed-integer linear reformulations of planning and scheduling problems. To account for the multi-stage sequential decision-making structure in process operations, we further develop multi-stage DRO models and adopt affine decision rules to address the computational issue. Applications in industrial-scale process network planning and batch process scheduling demonstrate that, the proposed DRO approach can effectively leverage uncertainty data information, better hedge against distributional ambiguity, and yield more profits.

Abstract:This article provides a review about how uncertainties in increasingly complex production and supply chains should be addressed in scheduling tasks. Uncertainty management will be particularly important in Industry 5.0 solutions that will require the close integration of operators and technical systems. To prepare for these challenging developments, this work reviews the sources of uncertainty and the scheduling algorithms that deal with the different types of models developed to handle the uncertain nature of the elements and the environment of complex technological systems. The paper not only identifies the challenges, but also the main building blocks that can help to manage and reduce uncertainties based on the I4.0 and I5.0 solutions. We hope that this study will serve as a starting point for R&D projects and algorithm developments, which will be needed primarily in the field of multi-agent, multistage and inverse optimizations.

Abstract:This paper tackles a large-scale and uncertain scheduling problem of semiconductor wafer fabrication system. Two kinds of uncertainties are considered here, including the machine breakdowns and the fluctuations of processing times. Instead of using the traditional rigid schedule, we propose a novel concept of operation-group-based soft schedule which is used as the new decision variable of the studied problem. The inherent idea of this concept is to make some critical scheduling decisions at the beginning of the scheduling horizon, and allow the remaining decisions to be made during the execution of the initial soft schedule. Furthermore, an operation-group-based soft scheduling approach (OGSSA) is proposed to deal with the uncertainties, which contains an offline optimization layer and an online dispatching layer. In the offline optimization layer, a prediction-based decomposition scheduling method is proposed to generate a soft schedule, and a global scheduling objective prediction model is constructed to evaluate the soft schedule. Then, the initial soft schedule is released to the online dispatching layer, and an online heuristic rule is designed to decide in real time, which operations and when to process. The computational results on the practical production data demonstrate the effectiveness of OGSSA under uncertain production environments.

Abstract:The fourth industrial revolution has necessitated the integration of sustainability and customer centricity into modern manufacturing systems, thereby emphasising their significance. However, the production process itself is characterised by inherent uncertainties. Hence, this paper primarily focuses on the multi-objective flexible job shop rescheduling problem with uncertain processing time and new job insertions. Two fuzzy constraints are incorporated: fuzzy processing time and fuzzy due date, which aim to model the uncertainty of processing time and ensure flexibility in meeting deadlines. The objective function aims to optimise both customer satisfaction and energy consumption. To address two types of rescheduling problems: time delay caused by fuzzy features and new job insertions, this paper is dedicated to providing a hybrid adaptative rescheduling strategy that combines a satisfaction-driven policy with two specific rescheduling methods. Moreover, an enhanced version of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is developed, incorporating population initialisation rules and multiple genetic operators to obtain solutions of superior quality. Experimental studies have demonstrated the impact of time delay caused by fuzzy features on customer satisfaction. The proposed hybrid adaptative rescheduling strategy and methods exhibit significant improvements in rescheduling plan performance under uncertain environments.

Abstract:Scheduling in the factory setting is compounded by computational complexity and temporal uncertainty. Together, these two factors guarantee that the process of constructing an optimal schedule will be costly and the chances of executing that schedule will be slight. Temporal uncertainty in the task execution time can be offset by several methods: eliminate uncertainty by careful engineering, restore certainty whenever it is lost, reduce the uncertainty by using more accurate sensors, and quantify and circumscribe the remaining uncertainty. Unfortunately, these methods focus exclusively on the sources of uncertainty and fail to apply knowledge of the tasks which are to be scheduled. A complete solution must adapt the schedule of activities to be performed according to the evolving state of the production world. The example of vision-directed assembly is presented to illustrate that the principle of least commitment, in the creation of a plan, in the representation of a schedule, and in the execution of a schedule, enables a robot to operate intelligently and efficiently, even in the presence of considerable uncertainty in the sequence of future events.

Abstract:A single-machine scheduling problem with deterioration and learning effect is studied in the present paper. The processing time and due date are considered uncertain variables due to lack of historical data. The aim is to minimize the makespan, total completion time, total weight completion time, and maximum lateness under an uncertain environment. To address the problem in an uncertain environment, the expected value model and pessimistic value model are developed. These models can be converted into equivalent models based on the inverse distribution method. It is proved that the corresponding dispatching rules can solve the problem optimally under different objective criteria. Finally, sensitivity analysis is used to illustrate the effectiveness of these rules.
