Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.

Abstract:In this study, two methacrylate‐based azo homopolymers are synthesized and used to fabricate photodeformable microspheres through a self‐assembling approach. The methacrylate‐based azo homopolymer with the narrow molecular weight distribution is synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, while the other with the relatively broad molecular weight distribution is synthesized by conventional radical polymerization. The azo polymers are characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis TGA, gel permeation chromatography GPC, and ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy (UV–vis) m. The colloidal spheres are obtained by gradually adding deionized water into the solutions of the azo polymers in N,N‐dimethylformamide. Laser light scattering analysis and transmission electron microscopy observations show that although both azo polymers can form uniform colloidal spheres in the dispersions, the molecular weight and its distribution show significant effects on the colloid formation process and the sizes of the colloidal spheres formed in the process. Upon irradiation with a linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam for a period of time, the azo polymer microspheres show the elongated deformation along the polarization direction of the actinic light. image

Abstract:The self-assembly and photoresponsive properties of an amphiphilic azo random copolymer bearing branched azobenzene side chains(PMAPB6P-AA) are reported.The aggregates of PMAPB6P-AA in THF/H2O dispersion were obtained by slowly adding deionized water into a THF solution of the polymer to the water content of 80 vol%.Instead of quenching the aggregates with excess water to form solid colloidal spheres,the dispersion was diluted with a THF/H2O mixture(THF/H2O=1/4,V/V) and then THF in the medium was slowly removed through evaporation.The procedure could generate a series of hollow-structured aggregates with different sizes simply by adjusting the preparation conditions.The hollow aggregates were characterized by transmission electron microscopy(TEM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and dynamic light scattering(DLS).Photoisomerization behavior of the azobenzene units was studied to detect the local environment surrounding the molecular probes in the hollow aggregates.Results showed that hollow aggregates possessed the non-spherical morphology at relatively high increasing rate of water content.The size(hydrodynamic diameter) of the hollow aggregates was determined by the polymer initial concentration in THF.The photoinduced isomerization rate and the photoisomerization degree of the hollow aggregates decreased with the increase of polymer initial concentration in THF.The vesicle-like aggregates with a thin shell were formed by diluting the polymer disperse at 23 vol% water content with THF/ H2O(THF/H2O=10/3,V/V) and slowly removing THF through evaporation.For the vesicle-like aggregates,photoinduced disaggregation was observed when irradiated with the 365 nm UV light.The understanding obtained from this study can be used to develop new functional materials from photoresponsive random copolymers.

Abstract:A methacrylate‐based copolymer containing side‐chain push–pull azo chromophores and adamantyl groups is synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, DSC, thermal gravimetric analysis, gel permeation chromatography, and UV–vis. By exploiting its good solubility in a water‐immiscible solvent (dichloromethane), azo polymer microspheres are fabricated through the solution dispersion method. Surface relief structures are inscribed on the microsphere surfaces upon exposure to the interference pattern of laser beams at 532 nm. Meanwhile, the shape of the microspheres is stable upon the light irradiation, which is distinct from the submicron‐scale colloidal spheres of azo polymers. By using camphene as a porogen, microspheres with the well‐developed porous structures are prepared. For the first time, it is observed that pores on the azo polymer microspheres can be modified or even selectively closed upon irradiation with a linearly polarized laser beam. image

Abstract:Azo molecular glass microspheres with photoinduced deformation properties have attracted attention for fabricating anisotropic particles and other specific-shaped particles. In this work, we investigated the self-assembly of an azo molecular glass ( IAC-4 ) material in tetrahydrofuran/water( THF/H2O) mixed solvents to form the colloidal spheres with uniform sizes in the dispersions as well as photoinduced deformation behavior of the formed IAC-4 microspheres. The intermediate states of self-assemblies were investigated via dynamic light scattering( DLS ). The results showed that as the water content increased, the hydrodynamic radius ( R-h ) tended to increase to reach the maximum and then decreased gradually. The relationship between the critical water content( ewe ) and initial concentration of IAC-4 in THE was proved to be consistent with the solubility of a solid solute in the binary mixed solvents, which indicated that IAC-4 underwent the transition from unsaturated state to a saturated state in the mixed solvents as the water content increased and then gradually aggregated to form the colloids in the dispersions. To test the photoinduced deformation property, the IAC-4 microspheres were obtained by separating the colloidal spheres from the dispersion and dried appropriately. Upon the irradiation with the linearly polarized laser beam ( 488 nm, 100 mW/cm(2) ), the microspheres of IAC-4 showed rapid photoinduced deformation parallel to the polarized direction. After the irradiation for 1 min, IAC-4 microspheres were rapidly stretched into the ellipsoidal particles with the average axial ratio of 1. 44. With the growth of the irradiation time, the average axial ratio further increased. Finally, the IAC-4 microspheres could evolve into the rod-like particles with the average axial ratio of 3. 32 for the irradiation time of 7 min.
Fabrication of bowl-shaped aggregates of azo polymer and their photoinduced deformatoin behavior

Abstract:The bowl-shaped aggregates were prepared by using an azo polymer ( BP-AZ-2CA ), and their photoinduced deformation behavior was studied. The bowl-shaped aggregates were prepared through gradual hydrophobic aggregation of the polymeric chains in DMF-H2O media and characterized by using TEM. critical water content ( CWC ) was obtained by the light scattering measurement. The results showed that two types of aggregates formed in the system, one was small colloidal spheres and the other was bowl-shaped aggregates. The aggregates with different average diameters were obtained by adjusting the initial polymer concentration and water-adding rate in the preparation processes. The photoinduced deformation behavior was studied by irradiating the bowl-shaped aggregates in solid state with a linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam (488 nm,110 mW/cm2 ) for different time periods. Upon the light irradiation, the bowl-shaped aggregates were elongated along the polarization direction of the laser beam especially when the irradiation time was longer than 15 min. The hollow space in the aggregates almost remained unchanged after irradiation. The morphology of the bowlshaped aggregates after irradiation changed with the angle between the bowl-shaped aggregates and the polarization direction of the light beam.

Abstract:Colloidal spheres composed of two amphiphilic azo polymers were fabricated and characterized.The colloidal spheres were prepared from BP-AZ-CA and BP-AZ-NT through gradual hydrophobic aggregation in THF-H2O solutions induced by increase in the water content.The relationship between the scattering light intensity and water content of the system was studied.The results show that during the aggregating progress,the more hydrophobic BP-AZ-NT tends to aggregate first,so the critical water content(CWC) of the system is determined by the more hydrophobic component.Because of the less hydrophobic molecules apt to aggregate later,so the outside layer of the colloidal spheres contains less hydrophobic BP-AZ-CA molecules.Upon irradiation of a linearly polarized Ar + laser beam(488 nm,100 mW /cm2),the hybrid colloidal spheres were elongated along the polarization of the laser beam.The results show that for the two-component colloidal spheres containing both BP-AZ-CA and BP-AZ-NT,the elongation rate of the colloidal spheres at first stage is similar to the colloidal spheres composed of BP-AZ-CA,but the final deformation degree is slightly smaller than that of BP-AZ-CA colloids.
Photoresponsive submicron-sized hollow spheres obtained from amphiphilic azobenzene-containing random copolymer

Abstract:This article reports the formation, morphology control, and photoresponsive properties of submicron-sized hollow spheres of an amphiphilic azobenzene-containing random copolymer (PEAPE). The hollow spheres were obtained by diluting the polymer disperse at 50 vol% water content with THF–water (v:v = 1:1) and slowly removing THF by evaporation. The size and shell thickness of the hollow spheres were determined by the polymer initial concentration in THF, water addition rate, and diluent volume. The ratio of the average shell thickness to the hollow sphere size was mainly affected by the diluent volume. By adjusting these factors, the size and shell thickness of the hollow spheres could be well controlled. The photoisomerization study indicated that hollow spheres possessed a compactly packed shell with density similar to that of their counterparts with solid interiors. Upon UV light irradiation, the hollow spheres in dispersions showed different photoresponsive properties depending on their size and shell thickness. For the “vesicle-like” spheres with a thin shell, photoinduced disaggregation was observed when irradiated with the 365 nm UV light.

Abstract:Photodeformable microspheres are fabricated from a newly synthesized amphiphilic azo polyurethane (PU) through gradually hydrophobic aggregation. For the synthesis, a PU-based precursor polymer (PU-Ph) is synthesized through step polymerization between 4,4-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) and N-phenyldiethanolamine. Then, the PU-based azo polymer (PU-Azo-Ph) is obtained by postpolymerization azo-coupling reaction between PU-Ph and diazonium salt of 4-aminobenzoic acid. The microspheres with controllable morphology and narrow size distribution are fabricated by gradually adding H2O into tetrahydrofuran solutions of PU-Azo-Ph, which are characterized by laser light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The research indicates that the colloid structures can be significantly modified by adjusting the preset water content in the preparation process. By adjusting the self-assembling condition, the colloidal microspheres with solid interiors and porous and hollow structures are obtained. Upon exposure to a linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam, the microspheres are elongated along the polarization direction to give ellipsoids and other elongated structures.
Photoinduced Reversible Worm-to-Vesicle Transformation of Azo-Containing Block Copolymer Assemblies Prepared by Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Abstract:A series of azo-containing copolymeric assemblies based on poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-poly[(benzyl methacrylate)-co-(4-phenyl-azophenyl methacrylate)] [PDMA-b-P(BzMA-co-AzoMA)] were prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization-induced self-assembly at high solid contents. Depending on the chain length of P(BzMA-co-AzoMA), spheres, worms, and vesicles were readily prepared. These azo-containing wormlike micelles underwent reversible worm-to-vesicle transformation upon alternative UV/vis light irradiation. By investigating the morphology evolution, a series of intermediates were observed, including coalesced worms as well as "octopus" like and "jellyfish"-like structures. The morphology transformation was rationalized by the volume change of the P(BzMA-co-AzoMA) block caused by the trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene groups. It is the first demonstration of light-stimulated reversible worm-to-vesicle transition and would benefit for the understanding of morphology evolution of polymer assemblies under external stimuli.

Abstract:In this work, colloidal spheres composed of azo polymers with different chromophore loading densities were prepared, and their photoinduced deformation behavior was studied. The colloids were constructed by using a series of amphiphilic epoxy-based random copolymers containing 4-carboxylazobenzene functional groups with different degrees of functionalization (DFs). The colloidal spheres were fabricated through gradual hydrophobic aggregation of the polymeric chains in tetrahydrofuran-H2O dispersion media, which was induced by gradually adding water into the systems. The colloidal spheres were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The photoinduced deformation behavior was studied by irradiating the colloidal spheres with a linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam. Results showed that the critical water content (CWC) for the colloid formation is related to the DF of the polymers, and CWC increases with the increase of DF. The hydrodynamic diameter of the colloidal spheres is also related to the DF of the polymers. When the DF of the polymers increases, the average size of the colloids gradually decreases. The hydrodynamic diameter of the colloidal spheres increases as the water dropping rate decreases. When the dropping rate is below 20 mu L/s, the size of the colloidal spheres increases abruptly as the dropping rate further decreases. Upon the linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam irradiation, the colloids composed of polymers with different DFs can all be elongated along the polarization direction of the laser beam. As DF increases, the deformation degree characterized by the axial ratio (l/d) almost linearly increases. These observations can give some insight into the photoinduced deformation mechanism and can be used to construct colloids with different sizes and photoresponsive ability.

Abstract:Many efforts have been made in fabricating three-dimensional (3D) ordered zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures due to their growing applications in separations, sensors, catalysis, bioscience, and photonics. Here, we developed a new synthetic route to 3D ZnO-based hollow microspheres by a facile solution-based method through a water-soluble biopolymer (sodium alginate) assisted assembly from ZnO nanorods. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman and photoluminescence spectra of the ZnO-based hollow microspheres were obtained at room temperature to investigate their optical properties. The hollow microspheres exhibit exciting emission features with a wide band covering nearly all the visible region. The calculated CIE (Commission Internationale d'Eclairage) coordinates are 0.24 and 0.31, which fall at the edge of the white region (the 1931 CIE diagram). A possible growth mechanism of the 3D ZnO superstructures based on typical biopolymer-crystal interactions in aqueous solution is tentatively proposed, which might be really interesting because of the participation of the biopolymer. The results show that this biopolymer-directed crystal growth and mediated self-assembly of nanocrystals may provide promising routes to rational synthesis of various ordered inorganic and inorganic-organic hybrid materials with complex form and structural specialization.
Size-Dependent Light-Driven Effect Observed For Azo Polymer Colloidal Spheres With Different Average Diameters

Abstract:In this work, colloidal spheres with different average diameters were prepared by using azo polymers (BP-AZ-CA and BP-AZ-NT) and photoinduced deformation behavior of the colloidal spheres was studied. The colloidal spheres were prepared through gradual hydrophobic aggregation of the polymeric chains in THF/H2O media and characterized by using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The colloidal spheres with different average diameters were obtained by adjusting the polymer concentration and water-adding rate in the preparation processes. The photoinduced deformation behavior was studied by irradiating the colloidal spheres in the solid state with a linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam (488 nm, 80 mW/cm(2)). Upon being irradiated with light, the colloidal spheres were elongated along the polarization direction of the laser beam. Results show that the deformation rate, maximum deformation degree, and even deformed shape are closely related to the average diameters of the colloidal spheres. Under the same light irradiation condition, the colloidal spheres with average diameters in the range of 200-300 nm show the fastest deformation rate and largest deformation degree among the series. For colloids similar in size, the BP-AZ-CA colloidal spheres exhibit deformation rates significantly faster than those of the BP-AZ-NT colloidal spheres. The BP-AZ-CA colloidal spheres with an average diameter of 5 10 nm show more complicated "spindle-like" or "tadpole-like" shapes after light irradiation for 45-85 min. These results clearly indicate that the photoinduced deformation behavior is significantly dependent on the sizes of the colloidal spheres. The observation can shed some new light on the possible mechanism of the photoinduced colloid deformation.
Azo Polymer Microspherical Cap Array: Soft-Lithographic Fabrication and Photoinduced Shape Deformation Behavior.

Abstract:In this work, azo polymer microspherical cap arrays possessing unique photoprocessible properties have been fabricated through a soft-lithographic contact printing approach. In the process, hexagonal polystyrene (PS) colloidal arrays, obtained by the vertical deposition method, were used as masters. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamps with aligned hemisphere air voids on the surfaces were obtained by casting the precursor against the colloidal arrays. By using the stamps and a solution of an epoxy-based azo polymer (BP-AZ-CA) as "ink", the microspherical cap arrays were fabricated by pressing the "inked" surfaces against substrates. Uniform 2D arrays of the submicrometer spherical caps could be obtained on the substrates after peeling off the stamps and drying. The characteristic sizes of the arrays depended on some adjustable features, such as the diameters of PS spheres and concentrations of the "inks" used in the process. After exposure to a linearly polarized Ar+ laser single beam, the spherical caps could be stretched along the polarization direction, and the arrays were consequently transformed into ellipsoidal cap arrays. Upon irradiation of interfering p-polarized Ar+ laser beams, only the spherical caps in the bright fringes were deformed by the light irradiation, which resulted in more complicated surface relief patterns. The observation gives another well-defined example of the photoinduced mass migration in the submicrometer scale. The approach can potentially be applied to fabrication of microlens arrays with different converging rate in two directions.

Abstract:Azo molecular glass (IAC-4) microspheres with a monodispersed diameter over ten microns were fabricated by microfluidics and unique shape manipulation was achieved based on their fascinating photoinduced deformation behaviour. After irradiation with a polarized laser beam (λ = 488 nm), the IAC-4 microspheres were transformed into uniform mushroom-like particles, and their three-dimensional (3D) asymmetric shapes were precisely manipulated by adjusting the irradiation time and the polarization state of light. By observing the particle morphology in three orthogonal views (top view, front view and side view) by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the photoinduced deformation behaviour of the ten-micron-sized particles was comprehensively revealed in the 3D space for the first time. It was observed that the photoinduced deformation asymmetrically occurred on the upper part of the microspheres due to the strong optical absorption of the azo chromophores. Besides, the deformation manner of the upper part was decided by the direction of the electric vibration of the refracted light. This work not only depicts a clear picture of the photoinduced deformation behaviour of the ten-micron-sized azo particles upon polarized light irradiation, but also provides a new method to controllably manipulate the particle shape from spheres to complex 3D architectures.

Abstract:An amphiphilic diblock copolymer, poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly {6-[4-(4-ethoxyphenylazo) phenoxy] hexyl methacrylate}, was synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization. In the solution of tetrahydrofuran and water, the diblock copolymer formed micrometer scale vesicles by self-assembly. Under the irradiation of UV light at 365 nm, these microvesicles generated such photoresponsive behavior as photoinduced expansion, swelling and fusion due to trans-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene units. The self-assembled vesicles even enlarged to be about five times their original size because of photoinduced fusion.

Abstract:Polymeric hollow nanospheres with stabilized structure have been realized by self-assembly of crosslinkable rigid poly(amic acid) ester (PAE) oligomer and coil-like poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVPy) via hydrogen bonding in their common solvent and subsequent photo-crosslinking of the PAE.

Abstract:A series of azo polyurethanes bearing push-pull type azo chromophores was synthesized by post polymerization azo-coupling reactions between a polyurethane precursor and diazonium salts of different aniline derivatives, respectively. Colloidal spheres with narrow size distributions were obtained by aggregation of these azo polyurethanes in DMF-H2O mixed solvents, which were induced by slowly increasing the water content. The self-assembling processes and formed structures were investigated by laser light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. When irradiated with linearly polarized light from Ar+ laser (488 nm) and diode solid state laser (532 nm), the azo polyurethane microspheres showed significant deformations elongated in the light polarization direction. The electron-withdrawing groups on the azo chromophores show a significant effect on the photoinduced deformation degree. These microspheres composed of the azo polyurethanes bearing carboxylic acid and trifluoromethyl groups as the electron-withdrawing substituents shows the largest deformation degrees when irradiated with 488 and 532 nm light, respectively.
