Abstract:The synthesis of a new PEG based hyperbranched copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGMEMA-co-EGDMA) was achieved via a one-step in situ deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (DE-ATRP). Then, hollow PEG based nanospheres were fabricated from this polymer using a solvent evaporation method and post-stabilisation strategy. Furthermore, the analysis using a cellular metabolic activity assay proved that the copolymer did not affect cellular metabolism, indicating that this PEG based polymeric nanosphere has potential for use in drug delivery applications.

Abstract:Star polymers are comprised of a spatially defined core-shell-periphery structure. Their unique properties render them for diverse applications. One of the central challenges in the synthesis of star polymers is the design of a multifunctional core with many reaction sites for the conjugation with presynthesized arms or the initiation of the growth of arms. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the single-chain cyclized/knotted nanoparticles (SCKPs) with multiple vinyl functional groups can be synthesized by Cu-0&Cu-II-mediated homopolymerization of bisphenol A ethoxylate diacrylate. Furthermore, the SCKPs with multiple pendant vinyl groups are used as the core and uniform amphiphilic star poly(-amino ester)s with 17 high-molecular-weight arms are synthesized via a grafting-onto approach. This facile approach opens new avenues for the design and preparation of novel star polymers.
Structural Factors of Rigid−Coil Polymer Pairs Influencing Their Self-Assembly in Common Solvent

Abstract:This study investigates factors in the structure of rigid and coil polymer pairs that influence their self-assembly in solution. Several pyridine-unit-containing polymers, that is, poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP), poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP), copolymers of styrene and 4-vinyl pyridine (SVP), and PS-b-P2VP block copolymer, were used. Their counterparts, the rigid proton-donating polymers, that is, carboxyl-ended polyimide (PI) and poly(amic acid) ester (PAE), were used. All such rigid-coil polymer pairs could self-assemble into hollow aggregates of submicrometer size in their common solvents. The results show a common trend that the hydrodynamic radius of the assembled hollow spheres decreases with the increasing ratio of the rigid proton-donating polymer to the flexible proton-accepting polymer. A new route of micellization of block copolymers with the aid of the rigid polymers is presented. Structure stabilization of hollow spheres composed of PAE/PS-b-P2VP was successfully realized. Furthermore, crosslinking different parts of the hollow spheres led to nanocages totally different in chemistry: crosslinking PAE led to PAE-based nanocages while crosslinking P2VP blocks led to block-copolymer-based nanocages with the rigid PAE chains inside.

Abstract:Engineering of hollow particles with tunable internal structures often requires complicated processes and/or invasive cleavage. Halogen-bond driven 3D confined-assembly of block copolymers has shed light on the engineering of polymer organization along with the fabricating of unique nanostructures. Herein, a family of multilevel hollow-structured particles (e.g., fully porous, multi-chamber, multi-shell, and concentric multi-layer architectures) is reported via halogen-bond regulated 3D confined-assembly of amphiphilic polymer networks. To do so, polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO) amphiphilic triblock copolymer is selected, where P2VP blocks act as halogen acceptor. Meanwhile, poly(3-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodophenoxy) propyl acrylate) (PTFIPA) is employed as halogen donor. Halogen-bond driven donor-acceptor linking between PTFIPA and P2VP block presented in PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO, can lead to the formation of supramolecular polymeric networks, along with the increased P2VP domain and tunable hydrophobic volume. Therefore, an adjustable packing parameter (p) is thus anticipated, which can enable the morphology transformation sequence until an equilibrium state is reached. Moreover, computer simulations are further utilized as the tool to interpret such morphologies transition and identify the precise distribution of each component. Benefiting from the tunable hollow structure and a substantial surface for transporting purpose, these structurally novel particles open perspectives toward promising applications including encapsulation, nanoreactor, and catalyst support.
Self-Assembly of Rigid and Coil Polymers into Hollow Spheres in Their Common Solvent

Abstract:This paper studies self-assembly of a rigid oligomer, polyimide (PI) with carboxyl ends, and a proton-accepting polymer poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVPy) or poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) (SVP) in solutions. It was found that these rigid/coil polymer pairs could form submicrometer hollow spheres in their common solvent chloroform. The rigid character of PI and its hydrogen-bonding grafting to PVPy chains are the key factors for such unique self-assembly behavior. Over a broad composition range, decreasing the ratio of PI/PVPy was found unfavorable to the assembly, i.e., leading to larger and broadly distributed hollow spheres. As the weight ratio of PI/PVPy decreased to 0.5 or less, the hollow spheres disappeared and soluble complex formed. PI could form hollow spheres with SVP as well, provided the pyridine unit content in SVP was not less than 11 mol %. With regard to the effect on the aggregate size and its distribution, decreasing the pyridine content in SVP was found equivalent to decreasing the PI/PVPy ratio. The structure of the hollow spheres of PI/SVP could be locked by chemical cross-linking SVP, and TEM studies showed that the cross-linked particles were able to maintain their integrity. Scanning electron micrographs of the solvent-cast films of the hollow-sphere solutions showed a two-dimensional hexagonal close-packing lattice of circular holes in a polymer matrix, similar to that for rod-coil block copolymers reported in the literature. Our work proved that this regular pattern was induced by water droplets and their packing in the process of dewetting of the polymer solutions.
Block-Copolymer-Free Strategy for Preparing Micelles and Hollow Spheres: Self-Assembly of Poly(4-Vinylpyridine) and Modified Polystyrene

Abstract:Noncovalently connected micelles (NCCM) with poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVPy) as the shell and hydroxyl -containing polystyrene, i.e., PS(OH), as the core were formed in a selective solvent mixture for PVPy by inter-polymer hydrogen bonding. With increase in the hydroxyl content in PS(OH), the structure of the micelles changed from perfect spheres to rodlike and then networklike aggregates. Shell-cross-linked micelles and then hollow spheres were obtained based on the NCCM, with hydrogen bonding rather than covalent bonds between the core and shell. The shell structure was locked in by the reaction of PVPy with the cross-linker of 1,4-dibromobutane, under mild conditions, Cavitation of the spherical micelles was realized just by changing the medium from the selective solvent to a common one to dissolve PS(OH) chains in the interior of the micelles, The resultant spheres were proved to be hollow by TEM observation and by both static and dynamic light scattering, The thickness of the shell could be controlled by changing the micelle composition. DLS, TEM, SEM, and AFM studies demonstrated that the integrity of the assembled spheres was maintained during the cross-linking and cavitation, The size of the hollow spheres increased apparently with dilution of the solution. Compared to the conventional route to shell-cross-linked micelles and hollow spheres from the micelles made of block copolymers, the current approach has the significant advantages of avoiding synthesis of block copolymers and chemical degradation of the core components.

Abstract:Exploitation of facile and versatile synthetic approaches to polymeric nanoarchitectures is of great interest in polymer science and engineering. Herein, we show that a simple hydrothermal route using double-solvents as reaction media has the ability to generate polymer nanospheres with tunable morphologies and components. In this one-pot approach, condensation polymerization of a resol precursor and radical polymerization of styrene are allowed to occur simultaneously under hydrothermal treatment. The synergistic self-organization of phenolformaldehyde crosslinked networks and polystyrene chains leads to the formation of well-defined hollow nanospheres with adjustable shell thickness or even Janus particles comprising a solid hemisphere and a hollow hemisphere. Furthermore, control over the composition of the hollow polymer nanospheres can be easily achieved by introducing a third monomer into the hydrothermal system.

Abstract:The main feature that determines the self-assembly property and the structure of linear-hyperbranched copolymer consists of the architecture of the copolymer and exterior factors such as the solvent, initial copolymer concentration, crosslinking, and molecular recognition. To gain an understanding of the feature, hyperbranched polyphosphoramidate-poly(trimethylene carbonate) (HPPAE-PTMC n ) copolymer with different topological structures was synthesized through chemical coupling reaction. HPPAE-PTMC n copolymer can form core–shell micelles. Via core-crosslinking, the stability of HPPAE-PTMC n micelles was enhanced and their comprehensive self-assembly behavior including its size, stability and morphology was further investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering and fluorescence analysis. Diameter of the core-crosslinked micelles increased with arm grafting ratio but decreased with arm length, which was contrary to their non-crosslinked analogues. Interestingly, a morphological transformation was observed after β-CD was introduced to the copolymer solution as a result of host–guest inclusion complexation. TEM results revealed that HPPAE-PTMC n aggregates evolved from rods to a coexistence of rods and spherical micelles as the initial concentration increased and further to vesicles after increasing the molar ratio of β-CD/PTMC segments.
New Approaches to Stimuli-Responsive Polymeric Micelles and Hollow Spheres

Abstract:This article briefly describes some new approaches to stimuli-sensitive polymeric micelles and hollow spheres, which were developed in the authors’ laboratory in recent years. (1) Self-assembly of component polymers to non-covalently connected micelles (NCCM) driven by specific interactions. For example, in water, PCL and PAA formed core-shell nanospheres due to interpolymer hydrogen bonding. After crosslinking the PAA shell and removing the PCL core, “nanocages” made of PAA network were obtained. This hollow structure shows perfect reversible size-pH dependence. (2) Simultaneous in-situ polymerization of monomers and self-assembly of the polymers. In this approach, PNIPAM network was formed by radical polymerization covering PCL particles. Hollow spheres of PNIPAM network were then obtained by biodegradation of the PCL core. Both the core-shell spheres and hollow spheres show reversible size dependence on temperature change because of the phase transition of PNIPAM around 32°C. (3) Complexation-induced micellization and transition between the micelles and hollow spheres. Graft copolymers of hydroxylethyl cellulose (HEC) and PAA were prepared by free radical polymerization. The copolymers showed pH dependent micellization, i.e., micelles formed when pH of the graft copolymer solution decreased to around 3. The micellar structure could be locked by crosslinking the PAA grafts. The resultant cross-linked micelles undergo pH-dependent transition between the micelles and hollow spheres, which accompanies a remarkable particle size change. Both the micellization and the structure transition were found to be reversible and associated with H-bonding complexation between the main chain and grafts.
Functional Polymeric Nanoobjects by Cross-Linking Bulk Self-Assemblies of Poly(Tert-Butyl Acrylate)-Block-Poly(Glycidyl Methacrylate)

Abstract:We report the bulk self-assembly of diblock copolymer poly(tert-butyl acrylate)-block-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PtBA-b-PGMA) with the PGMA that bears many epoxy groups as a cross-linkable segment and the PtBA as a hydrolyzable segment. The PtBA-b-PGMA block copolymers of a different composition were synthesized by two-step atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). After hulk self-assembly, the morphologies of microphase separation of the block copolymers were studied with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that with decrease of volume ratio of the PGMA segments the PtBA-b-PGMA self-assembled into lamellae. cylinders, and spheres with the dispersed PGMA domains. The epoxy groups in the PG MA domains were cross-linked by exposing the microphase-separated films into an atmosphere of either ethylenediamine (EDA) or propargylamine (PA). Then the bulk materials were dispersed into the good solvent of PtBA to generate the polymeric nanoobjects of plates, fibers, and spheres. of which the cross-linked PG M As were the cores and the PtBAs were the coronas. After hydrolysis of the PtBA segments into the poly(acrylic acid)s (PAAs). the cross-linked nanoobjects could be dispersed in basic water and showed reversible pH responsibility. The pendant alkyne croups in the PA cross-linked nanoobjects were applied to anchor anthracenes by click reaction with 9-(azidomethyl)anthracene (9-AMA).
Controllable Nanostructure Formation Through Enthalpy-Driven Assembly of Polyoxometalate Clusters and Block Copolymers

Abstract:The coassembly of block copolymers (BCPs) With nanoscale inorganic objects is an important route to fabricate nanostructured polymer composites. However, the immiscibility of inorganic/polymeric interface is a recurring challenge to overcome, particularly for inorganic clusters, such as the polyoxometalates (POMs)/BCPs system. In this paper, we present a general method to incorporate POMs into BCP matrices, in which a POM cluster is embedded as a core in a supramolecular star polymer (SSP) whose arms possess the same chemical composition as a BCP segment. Because of the enthalpic interaction between SSP arms and BCP segments, the SSP can carry POM into BCP matrices to realize their coassembly. By this way, we successfully localize a Keggin-type POM cluster [CoW12O40](6-) modified with polystyrene (PS) arms into the PS domain of poly(styrene-b-ethylene oxide) micelles, which induces the formation of a series of hybrid micelles with spherical, toroidal, and bicontinuous structures. The morphological transition of micelles can be adjusted by the length of PS arms and the content of cluster cores. The mechanism is studied by both experimental methods and simulations. An unconventional mechanism for toroid formation is disclosed for the first time, which follows a sphere-rosary-toroid pathway. Furthermore, the electrostatically bonded structure of SSP is found to play a crucial role on this pathway. These results not only pave the way for fabricating cluster polymer nanocomposites with controllable structures but also provide new insights into comprehending the self-assembly behavior of complex polymer systems.
Well-shaped poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based copolymer nanowires from spherical micelles via kinetic shape evolution

Abstract:The formation of self-assembled arrays or superstructures from copolymers has attracted intense research interest. Herein, we propose a kinetic approach to form self-assembled nanowires using a PDMS-based block copolymer consisting of poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly[2-(cinnamoyloxy)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMS-b-PCEMA). The copolymer was synthesized by using the macroinitiator PDMS-Br to initiate 2-(trimethylsiloxy)ethyl methacrylate (HEMA-TMS) via ATRP, followed by hydrolysis of the TMS group and gradual esterification with cinnamoyl chloride. PDMS-b-PCEMA presented core-shell spherical micelles in tetrahydrofuran, which transformed into nanowires within 5 days self-assembly via a typical kinetic shape evolution. The diameter of the assembled nanowires with a PCEMA inner core and PDMS shell was about 25–35 nm. The formation of these nanowires reflected a balance between the PDMS and PCEMA components: the PDMS segment was soluble enough to form a corona block, which was beneficial for the transformation of the micellar shape. Meanwhile, the PCEMA segment was able to control the diameter of the nanowire micelles but had no decisive effect on their formation. The effect of solvents on the self-assembled micelles indicated that nanowires were formed in tetrahydrofuran and dichloromethane, while core-shell micelles were formed in acetone. This was due to the different permittivities of these solvents. The nanowires were fixed by cross-linking the PCEMA group under UV irradiation, which enhanced their stability. We believe that this work provides a new strategy for the formation of nanowires and offers a guide for the diversified self-assembly of nanostructures from copolymers.

Abstract:The nanostructures based on polymers have attracted much research interest because of their rich morphologies, unique properties and potential applications in various fields. In particular, helical nanostructures have been research hotspots in recent years. In this work, composite non-helical and helical nanowire arrays of atactic poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP), and block copolymers polystyrene- block -poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS- b -P2VP) were fabricated successfully with inorganic species such as HAuCl 4 through a liquid/liquid interfacial adsorption and self-assembly approach without addition of any chiral inducers. The formation process of the helical nanowires of P2VP includes the following steps, i.e. adsorption of the polymer molecules and HAuCl 4 at the interface, the following protonation of pyridine groups, straightening of the P2VP chains by mutual repulsion between the protonated pyridine groups, aggregation of the P2VP chains due to the hydrophobic interactions between the backbones, and ordered organization of the pyridine groups through π-π interactions. The helical nanowires of PS- b -P2VP are worm-like micelles with a PS core and a P2VP shell, which are formed through the self-assembly of the block copolymer molecules with HAuCl 4 within the interfacial phase with the help of hydrophobic interaction between the PS blocks and orderly stacking of the P2VP blocks. The different formation mechanisms reflected the effects of molecular structure on the self-assembly of polymers. In addition, the formed nanowires further self-organize into ordered arrays due to the increasing interfacial pressure during the generation of the nanowires. The results of this study expand the scope of research on polymer self-assembly and the application of liquid/liquid interfacial self-assembly techniques to acquire highly ordered supramolecular nanostructures.

Structural Transformation of Diblock Copolymer/Homopolymer Assembles by Tuning Cylindrical Confinement and Interfacial Interactions.

Abstract:In this study, we report the controllable structural transformation of block copolymer/homopolymer binary blends in cylindrical nanopores. Polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine)/homopolystyrene (SVP/hPS) nanorods (NRs) can be fabricated by pouring the polymers into an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) channel and isolated by selective removal of the AAO membrane. In this two-dimensional (2D) confinement, SVP self-assembles into NRs with concentric lamellar structure, and the internal structure can be tailored with the addition of hPS. We show that the weight fraction and molecular weight of hPS and the diameter of the channels can significantly affect the internal structure of the NRs. Moreover, mesoporous materials with tunable pore shape, size, and packing style can be prepared by selective solvent swelling of the structured NRs. In addition, these NRs can transform into spherical structures through solvent-absorption annealing, triggering the conversion from 2D to 3D confinement. More importantly, the transformation dynamics can be tuned by varying the preference property of surfactant to the polymers. It is proven that the shape and internal structure of the polymer particles are dominated by the interfacial interactions governed by the surfactants.

Abstract:A simple, yet robust route to prepare polymer nanoparticles with tunable internal structures through supramolecular assembly within emulsion droplets is presented. Nanoparticles with various internal morphologies, including dispersed spheres, dispersed spirals, stacked toroids, and concentric lamellae, are obtained due to the 3D confinement and variation of hydrogen-bonding agent. This method also allows us to form mesoporous particles through further disassembly of the supramoleclar assemblies by rupturing the hydrogen bonding.
Complex Self-Assembly of Hyperbranched Polyamidoamine/Linear Polyacrylic Acid in Water and Their Functionalization

Abstract:This paper studied the complex self-assembly of hyperbranched polyamidoamine (h-PAMAM) and linear polyaryalic acid (l-PAA) by the facile mixing of their aqueous solutions. The complex self-assembly behavior and mechanism were investigated by the optical microscopy, UV-vis spectrometer, TEM, and zeta potential measurements. Interestingly, various self-assembled aggregates from micelles to microscaled vesicles were obtained by adjusting the solution pH. Moreover, the hollow structure of the vesicles was successfully stabilized by using glutaric dialdehyde (GDA) to cross-link the PAMAM layer. As expected, the resulting hollow spheres were able to capture different noble metal ions from their aqueous solution and reduce them into nanoparticles in situ, hence forming the hybrid hollow spheres. Such hybrid hollow spheres might have potential application in catalytic fields.
Synthesis of Amphiphilic Copolymers with A Dendritic Polyethylene Core and Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Arms and Their Self-Assembled Nanostructures

Abstract:A tandem synthetic strategy combining chain walking polymerization and azide-alkyne click chemistry was successfully used to prepare amphiphilic copolymers with a dendritic polyethylene core and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) arms. Dendritic polyethylene (DPE) tethered with multi-reactive hydroxyl groups (DPE-(OH)(11)) was synthesized by copolymerization of ethylene and trimethylsilyl-protected 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate using an alpha-diimine palladium catalyst under low ethylene pressure of 0.1 atm. Alkynyl-terminated DPE (DPE-(equivalent to)(11)) was quantitatively obtained by esterification reaction of DPE-(OH)(11) with pentynoic acid. Using a "grafting to" technique, PEO precursors with a terminated azido group were introduced to the DPE core with high efficiency by azide-alkyne click coupling reaction. The self-assembly behaviors of the obtained core-shell amphiphiles in selective solvents including water and hexane were studied by TEM, AFM and fluorescence. Supramolecular vesicles, unimolecular micelles, and multi-molecular micelles were observed, which is dependent on selective solvent as well as number and chain length of PEO arm.

Abstract:We developed a novel strategy for the near-monodispersed crosslinked polymeric nanocapsules with controllable structure via the 'self-templating' approach by the following four steps: (i) preparation of the PVAc lattices by the emulsion polymerization of VAc; (ii) surface hydrolysis of the PVAc lattices; (iii) crosslinking the PVA segments on the surface of the surface-hydrolyzed PVAc lattices and (iv) removal of the PVAc core of the core-shell structures by being dissolved by methanol. The strategy developed was confirmed with Fourier-transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering techniques. In the strategy developed, the particle size, the thickness and the crosslinking degree of the nanocapsules could be controlled with the lattice's size, relative molecular weight of PVAc and the crosslinking degree of the crosslinked shell.

Abstract:The development of reliable synthetic routes to polymeric nanostructures of well-defined composition, morphology and function is of scientific importance and technological interest. The generation of functional hollow polymeric nanostructures, hollow nanospheres and nanotubes in particular, can be achieved through direct and template-directed synthesis, core–shell precursors, and self-assembly of copolymers and polymer conjugates, as well as from dendrimers. The ability to prepare precursor macromolecules of well-defined structure and architecture has been substantially enhanced by recent advances in controlled radical polymerizations. The application and potential application of the hollow polymeric nanospheres and nanotubes as nanoreactors, and in diagnostics, encapsulation, controlled release, and other stimuli-responsive systems are also described.
