Abstract:Rapidly-growing demand for wearable and flexible devices is boosting the development of flexible lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The exploitation of flexible electrodes with high mechanical properties and superior electrochemical performances has been a key challenge for the rapid practical application of flexible LIBs. Herein, a flexible composite electrode was prepared from the mixed solutions of Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54]O2 (LLOs), carbon nanotubes(CNTs), and nanofibrillated celluloses (NFCs) via a vacuum filtration method. The resulting LLOs/CNTs/NFCs electrode delivered an initial discharge capacity of 253 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C in the voltage range from 2.0 to 4.6 V, and retained a reversible capacity of 178 mAh g−1 with 83% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1 C. The LLOs/CNTs/NFCs electrode exhibited excellent flexibility along with repeated bending in the bending test. The LLOs/CNTs/NFCs electrode after bending test remained a discharge capacity of 149 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 1 C, and the corresponding capacity retentions was 76%. The excellent electrochemical performance and high flexibility can be ascribed to the framework formed by CNTs with high conductivity and NFCs with good mechanical properties. The results imply that the as-fabricated electrode can be a promising candidate for the flexible LIBs.

Abstract:Nanostructured Li4Ti5O12/CNT composite particles were synthesized using an aerosol spray drying process followed by thermal annealing. After assembling into CNT networks, lightweight, flexible and binder-free Li4Ti5O12/CNT anodes were fabricated for lithium-ion batteries. Electrodes fabricated from these nanocomposites showed effective electron and ion transport and, more importantly, more robust structure compared to traditional binder-bonded electrodes. The electrodes delivered a high reversible capacity and superior rate performance up to an extremely high rate of 100C. Moreover, ultralong cycling stability was attained through 8000 rapid charge-discharge cycles with 89% capacity retention. These results demonstrate the feasibility of ultrafast batteries.

Abstract:Lithium transition metal oxides (LTMOs) are important cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Constructing the robust hybrid of LTMO-flexible substrate is of great significance for developing advanced flexible LIBs. However, currently reported flat noble metal-based flexible cathodes are cost-expensive and show quite low areal capacities. Developing low-cost and nanostructured flexible substrates for LTMO cathodes is highly desirable but still rarely reported. Particularly challenging is preventing flexible substrate corrosion and mitigating/eliminating the severe ion migration at interface during necessary high-temperature annealing process. Herein, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with truncated conical graphene layers are carefully chosen as flexible substrates for the growth of ultrasmall LiMn2O4 nanocrystals. The highly graphitic structure enables good high-temperature oxidation resistance. The plenty of exposed graphitic edge planes afford unexpected strong anchoring of LiMn2O4, evidenced by both experimental results and theoretical calculations. Moreover, an amorphous carbon layer is simultaneously introduced and coated on LiMn2O4 nanocrystals, which provides another strong outer anchoring like a 'cargo net'. Such dual-carbon-anchoring strategy help produce a 1D LiMn2O4-nanocarbon hybrid with robust interface. As LIB cathode, it owns fast electron conduction, smooth Li+ transportation, good electrochemical stability and especially superior mechanical flexibility, thus enabling a high areal mass loading of 17.7 mg cm(-2). The corresponding fabricated flexible LiMn2O4/CNF@C//CNF full cell exhibits a high areal capacity of 2.01 mAh cm(-2) as well as good rate capability and cycling stability.

Abstract:Binder-free LiCoO(2) -SACNT cathodes with excellent flexibility and conductivity are obtained by constructing a continuous three-dimensional super-aligned carbon nanotube (SACNT) framework with embedded LiCoO(2) particles. These binder-free cathodes display much better cycling stability, greater rate performance, and higher energy density than classical cathodes with binder. Various functional binder-free SACNT composites can be mass produced by the ultrasonication and co-deposition method described in this paper.

Abstract:Flexible energy-storage devices have attracted growing attention with the fast development of bendable electronic systems. Thus, the search for reliable electrodes with both high mechanical flexibility and excellent electron and lithium-ion conductivity has become an urgent task. Carbon-coated nanostructures of Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) have important applications in high-performance lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, these materials still need to be mixed with a binder and carbon black and pressed onto metal substrates or, alternatively, by be deposited onto a conductive substrate before they are assembled into batteries, which makes the batteries less flexible and have a low energy density. Herein, a simple and scalable process to fabricate LTO nanosheets with a N-doped carbon coating is reported. This can be assembled into a film which can be used as a binder-free and flexible electrode for LIBs that does not require any current collectors. Such a flexible electrode has a long life. More significantly, it exhibits an excellent rate capability due to the thin carbon coating and porous nanosheet structures, which produces a highly conductive pathway for electrons and fast transport channels for lithium ions.

Abstract:In this work, innate free-standing and flexible anode composed of entangled N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is fabricated by a facile annealing method following a simple compression without needing any tedious processing operations. The well cross-linked CNTs of the resultant free-standing anode enable robust diffusion channels for lithium ions and high flexibility. Served as the anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) without the utilization of binder and current collector, the fabricated free-standing electrode can deliver a reversible area capacity of 2.14[Formula: see text]mAh[Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text] at 1[Formula: see text]mA[Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text] with superior cycling stability and excellent rate capability. The obtained reversible area capacity for the fabricated free-standing electrode material is much higher than that of the commercial graphite anode ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]mAh[Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text] at 1[Formula: see text]mA[Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text]). Furthermore, the assembled full flexible battery utilizing the fabricated free-standing electrode also exhibits attractive performance and can substantially supply power for an electronic watch at flat and 180∘ bending positions, indicating the promising application in flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:The major difficulties for the development of flexible energy storage batteries lie in the scalable manufacture of high-performance flexible electrodes with bending tolerance. In the present study, large-scale CNT films are prepared by a continuous production method and used to fabricate a self-supported flexible high-capacity conversion anode with ultra-long cycling life by the in situ growth of NiCo 2 S 4 nanosheets tightly anchored on the CNTs. The CNTs produced via such a scalable method have interconnected porous channels, providing a large contact area between the active materials and electrolyte facilitating the electrochemical conversion reaction of NiCo 2 S 4 . An ultra-high rate capability is achieved in terms of a capacity of 280 mA h g −1 at 20 A g −1 . The interlaced construction of NiCo 2 S 4 nanosheets with CNTs and firm anchoring on the CNT film result in a remarkable ultra-long cyclability of the NiCo 2 S 4 /CNT electrode with a capacity retention rate of 96% after 7500 cycles. A flexible full battery device is further established with the NiCo 2 S 4 /CNT anode and Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /CNT cathode with the sealed package of PDMS, exhibiting good cycling stability and mechanical durability under different bending states. The present work highlights a scalable flexible battery electrode material, and demonstrates its potential applications in flexible Na-ion batteries.

Abstract:Ultra-stretchable carbon nanotube (CNT) composite electrodes for lithium-ion batteries are fabricated by coating CNT films and active material powders on biaxially pre-strained polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. The wrinkled structures that form during the pre-straining and release process extend along the strain axis to protect the CNT composite structures from fracture. The CNT composites demonstrate excellent stability and high durability with resistance increase of less than 12% after 2000 cycles at 150% strain. Both CNT/Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) anodes and CNT/Li(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)O-2 (NCM) cathodes maintain excellent electrochemical properties at cyclic 150% strain in different axes. The full lithium-ion battery consisting of the stretchable CNT/LTO anode and CNT/NCM cathode is able to withstand 150% strain in different axes without large decreases in performance. Stretchable batteries fabricated by the scalable, highly efficient, and low-cost biaxial pre-strain process with excellent durability and electrochemical properties will have potential applications in flexible devices.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) and TiO2 nanofibre composite films are prepared and used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) without the use of binders and conventional copper current collector. The preliminary experimental results from X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy suggest that the TiO2 nanofibres were well-dispersed and interwoven by the CNTs, forming freestanding, bendable and light weighted composite. In comparison with TiO2 nanofibre based LIBs, the CNTs could significantly improve the battery performance due to their high conductivity property and 3D network morphology. In both 1–3V and 0.01–3V testing voltage ranges, the as-prepared composites show excellent reversible capacity and capacity retention. The superior lithium storage capacity of the CNT/TiO2 composite was mainly attributed to dual functions of the CNTs – the CNTs not only provide conductive networks to assist the electron transfer but also facilitate lithium ion diffusion between the electrolyte and the TiO2 active materials by preventing agglomeration of TiO2 nanofibres. This work demonstrates that the CNT–TiO2 composite film could be one type of potential electrode material for large-scale LIB applications.

Abstract:The rapid development of portable and wearable electronics has called for novel flexible electrodes with superior performance. The development of flexible electrode materials with excellent mechanical and electrochemical properties has become one of the key factors for this goal. Here, a NixCoy-silicate@CNTs film is developed as a flexible anode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). On this film, NixCoy-silicate nanosheets are firmly and intimately anchored on the surface of CNTs, which have a 3D network structure and link the adjacent nanosheets together. Benefitted from this, the composite film is not only sufficient to withstand various deformations due to its excellent flexibility but also has excellent electrochemical properties, in terms of high reversible capacity of 1047 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) as well as a high rate and cycling performance (capacity retention up to 78.13% after 140 cycles). The pouch-type full flexible LIB using this material can stably operate under various bending conditions, showing the great potential of this 3D NixCoy-silicate@CNTs film for flexible energy storage devices with high durability. Abstract:A three-dimensionally aligned CNT/Si hybrid for flexible and efficient anode has been developed for lithium ion batteries. A delithiation capacity of 2562 mA h g−1 was achieved at a current density of 1 A g−1 with 93% retention after 100 cycles, and the delithiation capacity was retained at 1055 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 5 A g−1. The high specific capacity, cyclic stability and rate performance are ascribed to the aligned CNTs that serve as both conductive pathways and buffer scaffolds to effectively accommodate the volume change of Si in three dimensions. In addition, a stable electrochemical performance is maintained after increasing the areal density of the hybrid anode by over 10 times, indicating great promise for practical applications.

Abstract:Flexible and durable electrode materials are-of vital importance to developing advanced energy storage devices for emerging wearable electronics. Most current strategies adopt chemical modifications or chemical binders to improve the interface interaction between flexible components, which inevitably lowers the cyclic lifetime and increases the production cost. Here, we report an in situ, scalable sol gel method to fabricate free-standing TiO2/superaligned carbon nanotube (SACNT) hybrid films as flexible anodes in Li-ion batteries. The natural and desirable wettability between TiO2 and SACNTs makes any chemical modifications or chemical binders unnecessary in the fabrication process, delivering a clean TiO2 SACNT interface. The as-prepared TiO2/SACNT anodes not only inherit the high flexibility of the SACNT framework but also enhance rate capability and charge/discharge reversibility with its pseudocapacitive storage mechanism. These anodes exhibit a high capability and a long cyclic lifetime (over 1000 cycles at 60 C) in half cells. They are further assembled to make flexible full cells, where binders, conductive agents, and current collectors are all unnecessary. The capacity decay of a full-cell test is almost negligible over SOO cycles of bending with a fast charging rate within 50 s, suggesting TiO2/SACNT films to be a promising material for flexible storage devices.

Abstract:Multiwalled CNT entangled networks integrated into a highly conducting carbon layer can be grown on a range of substrates including glassy carbon and metal foils. A continuous flexible CNT electrode with high surface area and conductivity is produced, with a stable battery capacity of 572 mAh g–1. This discovery provides a direct route for the generation of large‐scale flexible CNT electrode materials.

Abstract:Mesoporous lithium titanate (LTO) nanoclusters are in situ synthesized in a network of super aligned carbon nanotubes (SACNTs) via a solution-based method followed by heat treatment in air. In the LTO-CNT composite, SACNTs not only serve as the skeleton to support a binder-free electrode, but also render the composite with high conductivity, flexibility, and mechanical strength. The homogeneously dispersed LTO nanoclusters among the SACNTs allow each LTO grain to effectively access the electrolyte and the conductive network, benefiting both ion and electron transport. By the incorporation of LTO into the CNT network, mechanical reinforcement is also achieved. When serving as a negative electrode for lithium ion batteries, such a robust composite-network architecture provides the electrodes with effective charge transport and structural integrity, leading to high-performance flexible electrodes with high capacity, high rate capability, and excellent cycling stability.
Two-Step Fabrication of Li4Ti5O12-Coated Carbon Nanofibers as a Flexible Film Electrode for High-Power Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A self-standing nonwoven flexible Li4Ti5O12/carbon nanofiber composite (denoted LTO/CNF) was synthesized by using a facile method involving the electrospinning fabrication of CNFs and chemical deposition of LTO over the CNF surface. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses show that the LTO/CNF film is composed of 50 +/- 20 nm diameter LTO polycrystalline particles distributed over 300 +/- 50 nm diameter CNF nanofibers. The nitrogen sorption isotherm further reveals the existence of mesopores in the LTO/CNF film. The as-prepared LTO/CNF composite exhibits attractive rate capability for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), delivering initial specific capacities of 158, 153, 146, 138, 131, 122, and 109 mAhg(-1) at rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 C, respectively, and a very stable cycling performance during 500 charge and discharge cycles at 20 C, which superior to electrodes made of commercial coarse-type LTO anodes. In addition, the electrochemical impedance is effectively reduced by fabricating the unique electrode architecture, which originates from the improved 3D conducting network and the nanocrystalline size of the LTO active phase. Electrospinning of CNFs and chemical deposition of a nanocrystalline LTO phase proves to be an effective and facile method to develop anodes for flexible LIBs with a wide range of potential applications.

Abstract:Lithium sulfur batteries (LSBs) with high energy density hold some promising applications in the wearable and flexible devices. However, it has been still challenging to develop a simple and feasible approach to prepare flexible LSB cathodes with both robust mechanical strength. Herein, flexible cathodes with controllable thicknesses are successfully fabricated via a facile blade-coating method. Due to the strong cohesion among CNTs bundles and the well-designed structure, the flexible cathodes are demonstrated to be with a combination of impressive mechanical strength and enhanced electrochemical performance. For the flexible cathodes with the sulfur mass loading of 4 mg cm-2, the areal capacity is close to 3.0 mA h cm-2, and the breaking stress is up to 5.59 MPa with 7.77% strain. Meanwhile, the pouch cell exhibits excellent cyclic stability at both flat/bent conditions. All demonstrate that the flexible cathodes may satisfy the demands of practical application. Moreover, this methodology is suitable for designing other flexible battery electrodes, such as flexible anodes for lithium ion batteries, flexible anodes for sodium/potassium ion batteries, etc.

Abstract:The fast development of flexible devices has greatly boosted the demands for flexible lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Accordingly, a broad exploration of flexible electrodes in LIBs is crucial. At present, the major challenge in the flexible electrode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is how to achieve an excellent electrochemical performance (particularly high-energy density) while maintaining superior mechanical flexibility. Herein, flexible silicon/carbon nanotube (Si/CNT) electrode is prepared via a common blade-coating, which is adoptable to large-scale production. The CNT network from monodispersed CNT solution endows the electrode with superior tensile strength and mechanical toughness. The tensile strength of the flexible electrodes is up to 3.75 MPa, and the corresponding strain at break is 43.9%. The flexible electrode delivers an areal capacity of 10.6 mAh cm−2 at 0.06 mA cm−2, which is completely meet the practical requirement (1–3 mAh cm−2). And a high reversible capacity of 5.64 mAh cm−2 can be retained at 0.3 mA cm−2 after 200 cycles. In addition, the pouch cell exhibits a promising cycling stability under the repeated deformation state. Moreover, this work also provides a feasible and scalable method to fabricate flexible electrodes for other wearable energy storage systems.

Abstract:Orthorhombic LiMnO2 (o-LiMnO2) is considered as a potential cathode material for lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, the irreversible phase transformation to spinel LiMn2O4 and sluggish lithium ion diffusion kinetics result in low practical specific capacity and poor cycling stability. In this work, conductive o-LiMnO2/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composites frameworks were constructed via an ingenious one-step dynamic hydrothermal method. The obtained o-LiMnO2/CNTs composites achieved outstanding electrochemical performance upon adjustment of the CNTs content. The results demonstrated either physical introduction of 1 wt% CNTs into o-LiMnO2 or in-situ formed o-LiMnO2/CNTs composite with 0.5 wt% CNTs could improve electrochemical performance effectively compared with pristine o-LiMnO2. However, when the content of CNTs increased to 1 wt% in in-situ formed o-LiMnO2/CNTs, the specific capacity reached 194.4 mAh g−1 and retention rate was 93.7% after 50 cycles at 0.1C. Moreover, the in-situ formed composite with 5 wt% CNTs led to the optimum specific capacity of 204.9 mAh g−1 and a high capacity retention rate (97.7% after 50 cycles at 0.1C). Galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) measurement also demonstrated that 5 wt% CNTs in o-LiMnO2/CNTs composite drastically improved the slowest Li+ diffusion step by a factor 100 times after 30 cycles as compared to the pristine counterpart. This behaviour demonstrated an accelerated diffusion of lithium through this new approach and improved reversibility of charging-discharging.
