Abstract:Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) is known as a promising pseudocapacitive material, but low conductivity limits its applications. Hydrogenation is demonstrated to increase the conductivity of MoO3 and hence improve its electrochemical performance. Hydrogenated MoO3 (MoO3−x) shows enhanced conductivity based on, both first principle calculations and single nanobelt measurements. Freestanding MoO3−x/carbon nanotubes (CNT) composite films have been fabricated and showed much improved electrochemical performance compared to composites of CNT and as-synthesized MoO3 (MoO3/CNT). Electrodes showed a specific capacitance of 337F/g (based on the mass of MoO3−x) and a high volumetric capacitance of 291F/cm3 (based on the whole electrode) with excellent rate capability. Also we confirmed that the improved intercalation kinetics and the increased intercalation pseudocapacitance could be attributed to the higher electronic conductivity of MoO3−x, which results in better and faster intercalations of Li+ ions. This electrochemical behavior implies that MoO3−x can serve as a very good negative electrode with high capacitance at high mass loading levels.

Abstract:Due to its excellent electrochemical properties, MoO3 is considered to be a promising electrode material in the field of energy storage, but it still suffers low electronic conductivity and serious aggregation. Herein, the partially expanded graphite paper (EGP) with a three-dimensional porous structure is synthesized by a cathodic electrochemical exfoliation, serving as a conductive substrate for the in-situ growth of MoO3 nanobelts via a simple hydrothermal method. The self-supporting MoO3/EGP composite material directly used as the electrode material of the supercapacitor, shows a high specific capacitance of 7.1 F cm(-2) at 1 mA cm(-2). In addition, the assembled symmetrical supercapacitor by using MoO3/EGP as electrodes offers an energy density of 0.77 mWh cm(-2) at a power density of 2.41 mW cm(-2) and the capacitance retention is 84.1% after 5000 cycles at 10 mA cm(-2), indicating the excellent cyclic stability. The remarkable electrochemical performance of MoO3/EGP is attributed to the self-supporting porous structure of EGP with high electronic conductivity, which not only effectively prevents the aggregation of MoO3 nanobelts but also promotes the transfer kinetics of ion and electron.
Morphology-controlled synthesis of one-dimensional zinc molybdate nanorods for high-performance pseudocapacitor electrode application

Abstract:Nanorod-shaped Zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) materials have been prepared using a cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) template-assisted hydrothermal synthesis, followed by subsequent calcination process. The morphology and size of the ZnMoO4 can be altered by adjusting the concentration of CTAB. The optimal concentration of CTAB provides nanorod-shaped ZnMoO4, which accordingly determines the electrochemical features of prepared supercapacitor electrodes. The electrochemical properties were examined using cyclic voltammetric (CV) and chronopotentiometric (CP) techniques. The cyclic voltammetric studies confirm the pseudocapacitor mechanism with the specific capacitance of 779 Fg−1 at a scan rate of 5 mVs−1. Furthermore, the chronopotentiometric studies deliver the specific capacitance of 540 Fg−1 at a current density of 1 Ag−1. Besides, the ZnMoO4 demonstrated outstanding cyclic stability and the capacitance retention of about 90% was observed even after continuous 3000 cycles at a scan rate of 100 mVs−1. This endeavor demonstrated an important promising approach to synthesize ZnMoO4 nanorods with high specific capacitance, rate capability and superior cycle stability, which have attractive interest to be the candidate for electrode materials towards high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:The proposal of pseudocapacitive materials breaks the barriers between batteries and capacitors, allowing for the possible achievement of a balanced energy-power performance. However, the limited reserve of lithium restricts the practical applications of pseudocapacitive materials in lithium-based systems, whereas sodium resources are abundant with the similar properties to lithium, but there is a lack of suitable pseudocapacitive materials for sodium-based systems. The exploitation of pseudocapacitive materials for Na+ storage is urgent. This study, for the first time, reports a sonochemical approach, involving intercalation and ultrasonic exfoliation processes, to prepare composite K2Mo4O13/alpha-MoO3 (i.e., KMO) nanorods, and the possible applications of the KMO nanorods in Li+/Na+ pseudocapacitance were evaluated. The as-synthesized KMO possessed a uniform rod-like morphology formed by assembling nanoneedles (or nanobelts) with a large apparent aspect ratio of more than 10. Both in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the KMO nanorods exhibited efficient pseudocapacitance, which was not observed in the pristine MoO3-Na system. In SIBs, the as-synthesized KMO delivered a capacity of 895 mA h g(-1) at 0.02 A g(-1), which was much higher than that of the pristine MoO3-Na system. Moreover, it was found that the b values of KMO (i = av(b), current i and scan rate v in the CV curves) were over 0.9 at potentials ranging from 1 V to 2 V in SIBs, indicating an obvious pseudocapacitive process. Benefiting from the layered K2Mo4O13 nanorods built with edge-shared distorted MoO6 octahedra, the Na+ ions with a larger size could be intercalated into the spaces between the double MoO6 plates. This sonochemical approach based on the intercalation and exfoliation chemistry opened a new path to prepare molybdenum-based nanostructures for superior Li+/Na+ pseudocapacitance applications on a large scale in a low-carbon and environment-friendly manner.

Abstract:Ti@MoOx core–shell nanorod arrays with diameters within 100nm were fabricated by electrodepositing MoOx on a Ti nanorod array prepared by oblique angle deposition. A high areal capacitance of 27mFcm−2 and satisfactory cycling stability were obtained. After post-annealing, MoO2 grains were introduced to enhance the rate capability, suggesting a potential pseudocapacitive micro-electrode.

Abstract:Currently, the specific capacity and cycling performance of various MoS2/carbon-based anode materials for Na-ion storage are far from satisfactory due to the insufficient structural stability of the electrode, incomplete protection of MoS2 by carbon, difficult access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, as well as inactivity of the adopted carbon matrix. To address these issues, this work presents the rational design and synthesis of 3D interconnected and hollow nanocables composed of multiwalled carbon@MoS2@carbon. In this architecture, (i) the 3D nanoweb-like structure brings about excellent mechanical property of the electrode, (ii) the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets are sandwiched between and doubly protected by two layers of porous carbon, (iii) the hollow structure of the primary nanofibers facilitates the access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, (iv) the porous and nitrogen-doping properties of the two carbon materials lead to synergistic Na-storage of carbon and MoS2. As a result, this hybrid material as the anode material of Na-ion battery exhibits fast chargetransfer reaction, high utilization efficiency, and ultrastability. Outstanding reversible capacity (1045 mAh g(-1)), excellent rate behavior (817 mAh g(-1) at 7000 mA g(-1)), and good cycling performance (747 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 700 mA g(-1)) are obtained.
High Pseudocapacitive Performance of MnO2 Nanowires on Recyclable Electrodes

Abstract:Manganese oxides are promising pseudocapacitve materials for achieving both high power and energy densities in pseudo capacitors. However, it remains a great challenge to develop MnO2-based high-performance electrodes due to their low electrical conductance and poor stability. Here we show that MnO2 nanowires anchored on electrochemically modified graphite foil (EMGF) have a high areal capacitance of 167 mF cm(-2) at a discharge current density of 0.2 mA cm(-2) and a high capacitance retention after 5000 charge/discharge cycles (115%), which are among the best values reported for any MnO2-based hybrid structures. The EMGF support can also be recycled and the newly deposited MnO2-based hybrids retain similarly high performance. These results demonstrate the successful preparation of pseudocapacitors with high capacity and cycling stability, which may open a new opportunity towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly method of utilizing electrochemical energy storage devices.
Characterization of Moo3 Nanobelt Cathode for Li-Battery Applications

Abstract:Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) and PPyxMoO3 (x=0.5 and 1) nanobelts were obtained by the simple hydrothermal process from MoO3 sol. The morphology and structure of the samples were characterized using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectra, SEM and AFM. The results show that the H atoms in polypyrrole are H-bonded with the O atoms in the Mo=O bonds of MoO3 nanobelts. Using the electrolyte, we fabricated electrochemical cells with a configuration of Li/(LiPF6+EC+DMC)/(MoO3+acetyleneblack+PTFE) and studied discharge profiles.

Abstract:A hybrid polypyrrole-covered MoO3(PPy/MoO3) nanorod is designed and synthesized via hydrothermal and in situ chemical oxidative polymerization methods. It is found that this nanorod can remarkably enhance the electrochemical performances, including the higher specific capacitances (687Fg−1 at a current density of 1Ag−1) and excellent cycling stability (83% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles), which attributed to high surface area, the electron conduction promoting effect of PPy nano conductive layer and the synergic effect between the PPy and MoO3 nanorod. Such a hybrid nanorod is a promising electrode material for application in supercapacitors.
Facile Synthesis of Novel V0.13Mo0.87O2.935 Nanowires With High-Rate Supercapacitive Performance

Abstract:Binary metal oxides composed of molybdenum-vanadium oxides are promising candidates for supercapacitors. Here, we report the synthesis of one-dimensional V0.13Mo0.87O2.935 nanowires through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. This nanowire presented a high specific capacitance of 394.6 F g-1 (1 mV s-1) as an electrode applied to the supercapacitor. Importantly, this electrode showed a perfect rate capability of 91.5% (2 to 10 A g-1) and a continuous verified outstanding cyclic voltammetry of 97.6% after 10,000 cycles. These superior electrochemical properties make the synthesized V0.13Mo0.87O2.935 nanowires a prospective candidate for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Molybdenum-based metal oxides have succeeded in incredible consideration for supercapacitor applications due to their outstanding structural, morphological and electrochemical properties. Herein, a highly porous orthorhombic MoO3 (α-MoO3) nanobenzene like nanosheets are synthesized on nickel foam (Ni-F) via a simple and cost-effective chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the synthesis of nanostructured α-MoO3 having multi oriented diffraction planes. The surface morphology (SEM) analysis indicated that the entwined nanobenzene through nano-rods/particles is beneficial for good electrical conductivity hence the high electrochemical performance of synthesized α-MoO3. The electrochemical properties of synthesized α-MoO3 electrode material like cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charging-discharging (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are analyzed using a three-electrode electrochemical workstation in 2 M KOH electrolyte solution. The synthesized α-MoO3 pseudocapacitor presented a maximum specific capacitance of 3206 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. Moreover, α-MoO3 exhibits a cyclic stability of about 99.95% after 3000 cycles, high energy density (111 Wh/kg), power density (2500 W/kg) and negligible charge transfer resistance (0.6 ohms), indicating that it can serve as an excellent electrode material for supercapacitors. The Power law and Dunn's model simulations also confirmed that the excellent electrochemical performance of synthesized α-MoO3 electrode material is contributed by capacitive as well as diffusion-controlled behavior.

Abstract:We controllable designed and synthesized four kinds of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructured Co3O4 thin films directly deposited on the nickel foam surface by a facile chemical bath deposition method. The morphologies of the Co3O4 films were regulated by using different anions (SO4 2−, NO3 −, Cl−, and CH3COO−) originated from the precursors. The effect of different anions on the surface morphologies and pseudocapacitance behaviors of Co3O4 films was investigated by multiple electrochemical methods, including cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies (EIS). The results indicated that the anions in the precursor salts greatly affected the morphology and porosity of the Co3O4 thin film, and consequently exhibited the different electrochemical performances in 2.0 M KOH electrolyte. The Co3O4 thin film prepared from cobalt acetate shown excellent electrochemical performance among the four different Co3O4 thin films electrodes, such as a high specific capacitance (743.8 F·g−1) and nice cycling stability (95.8% retention after 1000 charge-discharges at a high current density of 5 A·g−1). Furthermore, this work also provides a facile large-scale fabrication method to prepare secondary nanostructure on pseudocapacitance materials, such as graphene, transition metal oxides, carbon fibers, for enhancing the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor at low operation temperature.

Abstract:The development of electrode materials with excellent performance serves as the key for researchers to enhance the energy density of supercapacitors. Cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4) nanomaterials have been regarded as one of the most prospective electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their high theoretical capacitance and excellent electrical conductivity. In this paper, three kinds of CoMoO4 nanorods were prepared directly via simple and environmentally friendly solid-phase chemical reactions with solid inorganic salts as raw materials. According to X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test results, different reagents had certain effects on the size and morphology of CoMoO4, and these affected its electrochemical performance. In particular, the samples prepared with Co(NO3)2·6H2O as raw material took on a more uniform micromorphology, with a better crystallinity. Simultaneously, electrochemical test results showed that the samples synthesized with Co(NO3)2·6H2O presented relatively good electrical conductivity and a large specific capacitance (177 F g−1). This may be due to the nitrates reacting more slowly during the reaction and the crystals having difficulty aggregating during growth. Therefore, the structure of the prepared CoMoO4 nanomaterial was more uniform, and it was resistant to collapse during the charging and discharging process; thus, the capacitor presents the best performance.

Abstract:The amorphous molybdenum oxides on the surface of molybdenum carbide nanoparticles undergo a faradaic redox reaction during the sodiation and desodiation process, which exhibits notable pseudocapacitive behavior. A sodium ion capacitor based on pseudocapacitive Mo2C nanowires anode coupled with high‐rate battery‐type Na3V2 (PO4)2F@C cathode delivers a high energy and power density. Electrochemical sodium‐ion storage technologies have become an indispensable part in the field of large‐scale energy storage systems owing to the widespread and low‐cost sodium resources. Molybdenum carbides with high electron conductivity are regarded as potential sodium storage anode materials, but the comprehensive sodium storage mechanism has not been studied in depth. Herein, Mo2C nanowires (MC‐NWs) in which Mo2C nanoparticles are embedded in carbon substrate are synthesized. The sodium‐ion storage mechanism is further systematically studied by in/ex situ experimental characterizations and diffusion kinetics analysis. Briefly, it is discovered that a faradaic redox reaction occurs in the surface amorphous molybdenum oxides on Mo2C nanoparticles, while the inner Mo2C is unreactive. Thus, the as‐synthesized MC‐NWs with surface pseudocapacitance display excellent rate capability (a high specific capacity of 76.5 mAh g−1 at 20 A g−1) and long cycling stability (a high specific capacity of 331.2 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 over 1500 cycles). The assembled original sodium ion capacitor displays remarkable power density and energy density. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the sodium storage mechanism of Mo2C materials, and constructing pseudocapacitive materials is an effective way to achieve sodium‐ion storage devices with high power and energy density.

Abstract:Porous and single-crystalline Co3O4 nanospheres have been synthesized successfully on a large scale. It was found that the reaction time can dramatically affect the growth of the Co3O4 nanospheres in nanoreactors constructed with AOT(-) and Co2+ ions. The dynamic evolution of the nanostructures produced in the reaction strongly support a stepwise splitting mechanism proposed to explain the formation of the porous and single crystalline nanospheres. The pseudocapacitors made with the porous and single crystalline Co3O4 nanospheres exhibit excellent charge-storage performance. The enhanced electrochemical properties of the materials can be attributed to their superstructures with pores and single crystalline features.

Abstract:Ternary Ni-Co-Mo oxy-hydroxide nanoflakes grown on carbon cloth was successfully fabricated based on a facile hydrothermal method. This composite product consists of three components: Ni-Co double hydroxide and Mo oxide. As a novel electrode material for pseudocapacitors, the Ni-Co-Mo oxyhydroxide nanoflakes on carbon cloth exhibit excellent electrochemical properties, with a specific capacitance of 2562 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), and a good cycling stability. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the large specific surface area and the enhanced conductivity achieved through incorporating of Mo. By virtue of simple fabrication procedures and enhanced electrochemical performance, such ternary oxy-hydroxide nanoflakes have highly promising potential for energy storage devices. Abstract:α-MoO_3 nanobelts can be hydrothermally synthesized by acidifying solution of molybdate with nitric acid at a well-controlled concentration.X-ray diffraction,transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) were employed to analyze the crystalline structure and morphology of the synthesized MoO_3 nanofibres.The results indicate that orthorhombic MoO_3 nanofibres with widths ranging from 50～400nm grow along direction when nitric acid concentration is above 6.3mol/L,while hexagonal MoO_3 can be obtained when nitric acid concentration is around 2.6mol/L.Galvanostatic cycling tests reveal that electrode composed of MoO_3 nanobelts shows smaller decline in first lithiation capacity than that consists of microsized MoO_3 powders when the current density increases from 0.195～0.52mA/cm~2.
Dual‐Doped Molybdenum Trioxide Nanowires: A Bifunctional Anode for Fiber‐Shaped Asymmetric Supercapacitors and Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:A novel in situ N and low-valence-state Mo dual doping strategy was employed to significantly improve the conductivity, active-site accessibility, and electrochemical stability of MoO3 , drastically boosting its electrochemical properties. Consequently, our optimized N-MoO3-x nanowires exhibited exceptional performances as a bifunctional anode material for both fiber-shaped asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) and microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The flexible fiber-shaped ASC and MFC device based on the N-MoO3-x anode could deliver an unprecedentedly high energy density of 2.29 mWh cm(-3) and a remarkable power density of 0.76 μW cm(-1) , respectively. Such a bifunctional fiber-shaped N-MoO3-x electrode opens the way to integrate the electricity generation and storage for self-powered sources.
