Abstract:Xylaria fusispora, an undescribed species of Xylaria (Xylariales, Xylariaceae), is described and illustrated as a new species based on collections from Guizhou Province, China. Both morphology and phylogenetic analysis of nrDNA ITS sequences support the establishment of this new species. The fungus is characterized by its fusoid-equilateral ascospores and an ascus apical ring not bluing in Melzer’s reagent. The differences between the new species and the related fungi are discussed.

Abstract:A new xylariaceous fungus, Xylaria fanjingensis sp. nov., is described and illustrated from the subtropical forest of Guizhou Province, southern China. The new species is characterized by small, sessile, subglobose stromata attached to the substrate by a narrow connective, the ascal apical ring staining light rust or rust in Melzer's iodine reagent, and the ascospores (37.5)38-44.5(46.5) x 18-20 mu m. Another penzigioid Xylaria species, X. cf. berteri is reported in China for the first time. Morphological descriptions and photographs of stromata and microstructures are provided based on the Chinese collections.

Abstract:Two specimens of Xylaria were collected from Jilin, northeastern China, during a field trip in August 2014. They are described and illustrated here as new species, i.e. Xylaria crinalis and X. betulicola, based on a combination of morphological and ITS sequence data.They share thread-like stromata with a long sterile filiform apex. Xylaria crinalis is similar to X. betulicola from China in both macro- and micro-morphological features, except its few scattered perithecia, more or less conspicuous germ slit, slightly larger and narrower ascospores, and occurrence on wood. In the phylogenetic analysis the two Chinese species clustered with X. filiformis from Iran into a subclade within the genus Xylaria Glade, but were separated from other species as well as from each other.

Abstract:Four species of Xylaria were collected from Guizhou and Hainan provinces in China. Morphological and phylogenetic analyses (based on beta-tubulin, rpb2 and alpha-actin genes) revealed two new species (X. sylvatica sp. nov. and X. wuzhishanensis sp. nov.) and two known species (X. atrosphaerica and X. cubensis). Xylaria sylvatica is distinguished from X. spinulosa by lacking long thorns on the stromatal surface, and larger ascospores (23-28.5 x 7-9.5 mu m vs. 19-23 x 6.5-8.5 mu m) with a sigmoid germ slit. Xylaria wuzhishanensis differs from X. schweinitzii by its semi-globular or irregularly globose stromata, from X. atrosphaerica by its larger ascospores (23-30.5 x 7-9 mu m vs. 17-25 x 6-10 mu m). Their descriptions and illustrations are provided.

Abstract:Two species of Xylaria collected from southern China are reported. Xylaria spinulosa sp. nov. is introduced as a new species based on morphology and sequence data analysis. Xylaria spinulosa differs from other species in the genus mainly by its long spines covering the surface of the stroma. Xylaria atrosphaerica is a new record for China. Abstract:A new pyrenomycetous fungus, Xylaria acericola, collected in Jilin Province, northeastern China, is described and illustrated on the basis of two collections. Both morphology and phylogenetic analysis of rDNA ITS and beta-tubulin sequences support the establishment of this new species. Macroscopically, the new species is characterized by penzigioid stromata erumpent through bark of host plant. Microscopically, it has dark-brown to black, ellipsoid-inequilateral ascospores and large, urn-shaped ascus apical ring bluing in Melzer's reagent. The differences between the new species and the related fungi are discussed. Another penzigioid Xylaria species, X. sibirica, is reported in China for the first time.

Abstract:Based on inferences from morphological, chemical and phylogenetic analysis using ITS sequences, a new species of Alectoria is described from the Hengduan Mountains in southwestern China, A. spinosa Li S. Wang & Xin Y. Wang sp. nov, it has dull yellowish fruticose thallus with abundant pseudocyphellae, which is the main character of Alectoria, and differs from all the other Alectoria species by having isidia-like spinules on the soralia. Two species of Alectoria are confirmed in China, their morphological and chemical traits, together with their geographical distributions in China, are discussed, and a key to the species is provided.

Abstract:Xylaria is a widely distributed genus in the Ascomycota phylum that can decompose wood. It is an essential decomposer in ecosystems and a source of bioactive secondary metabolites. Based on morphological characteristics and molecular evidence, this article thoroughly describes two new species discovered on the fallen leaves in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, along with illustrations and comparisons with similar species. Xylaria diaoluoshanensis is characterized by filamentous stromata with long infertile apexes, ascospores sometimes with non-cellular appendages. Xylaria fulvotomentosa differentiates itself from other Xylaria species that grow on fallen leaves by its stroma surface, being yellow tomentose. These two new species of the genus Xylaria were found by phylogenetic analysis using the ITS-β-tubulin-RPB2 sequence dataset. Furthermore, a species first discovered in China, X. petchii, is described. Finally, a search table for 44 species related to fallen leaves and petioles in the world is established.

Abstract:In this study, we describe 27 new species of xylarialean taxa based on a comprehensive analysis that combines morpho-anatomy and multi-locus phylogenetics using ITS, rpb2, and TUB2 loci sequences. The newly identified species include Anthostomella guizhouensis, An. yunnanensis, Astrocystis dinghuensis, As. guizhouensis, As. heterocyclae, As. sichuanensis, Collodiscula baoshanensis, C. quadrangularis, Kretzschmaria sichuanensis, K. kuankuoshuiensis, K. landingshanensis, Nemania bannaensis, N. buxi, N. landingshanensis, N. lasiocarpae, N. leigongshanensis, N. mengmanensis, N. subchangningensis, Nigropunctata khalidii, Pandanicola guizhouensis, Rosellinia cerasi, R. guiyangensis, R. guizhouensis, R. limushanensis, R. lishuicola, R. wuzhishanensis, and R. yaorenshanensis. Additionally, we report the occurrence of xylarialean taxa in China or on the Chinese mainland as new geographical findings, which includes Anthostomella leucobasis, An. pseudobambusicola, An. rhaphidophylli, An. smilacis, An. vestita, Astrocystis bambusae, Rosellinia yumingjui, Stilbohypoxylon elaeidicola and Xylaria frustulosa, X. glebulosa, and X. longissima. Morphologically similar species and phylogenetically close taxa are compared and discussed. This extensive exploration enhances our understanding of fungal diversity and distribution, particularly within the context of China's rich ecological landscape and the Xylariaceae.

Abstract:Discovering novel Xylaria species. The genus Xylaria comprises a diverse group of fungi with a global distribution and significant ecological importance, known for being a source of bioactive secondary metabolites with antibacterial, antioxidative, anticarcinogenic, and additional properties. In this study, we present a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the species of Xylaria found in some parts of southern China, characterized by an extensive multilocus phylogeny analysis based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS), TUB2 (β‐tubulin), and DNA‐directed RNA polymerase II subunit 2 (rpb2) gene regions. Morphological examination and detailed comparative analyses of the collected specimens were conducted to determine the distinctiveness of each species. The multilocus phylogeny approach allowed us to infer evolutionary relationships and assess species boundaries accurately, leading to the identification of 40 novel Xylaria species hitherto unknown to science. The newly described species are: X. baoshanensis, X. bawanglingensis, X. botryoidalis, X. dadugangensis, X. doupengshanensis, X. fanglanii, X. glaucae, X. guizhouensis, X. japonica, X. jinghongensis, X. jinshanensis, X. kuankuoshuiensis, X. liboensis, X. negundinis, X. orbiculati, X. ovata, X. pseudoanisopleura, X. pseudocubensis, X. pseudobambusicola, X. pseudoglobosa, X. pseudohemisphaerica, X. pseudohypoxylon, X. puerensis, X. qianensis, X. qiongzhouensis, X. rhombostroma, X. serratifoliae, X. shishangensis, X. shuqunii, X. shuangjiangensis, X. sinensis, X. tongrenensis, X. umbellata, X. xishuiensis, X. yaorenshanensis, X. yinggelingensis, X. yumingii, X. yunnanensis, X. zangmui, and X. zonghuangii. The study's findings shed light on the distinctiveness of the newly described species, supported by both morphological distinctions and phylogenetic relationships with their close relatives. This taxonomic revision significantly contributes to our understanding the diversity of Xylaria in China and enriches the knowledge of fungal biodiversity worldwide.

Abstract:This study presents the identification of four novel Xylaria species, discovered in the karst region of China. The discovery was facilitated by a rigorous analysis that encompassed both morpho-anatomical features and multi-locus phylogenetics utilizing sequences from the ITS, rpb2, and TUB2 loci. The newly identified species are designated as Xylariajichuanii sp. nov., X.nanningensis sp. nov., X.orientalis sp. nov., and X.taiyangheensis sp. nov. The distinction of these species from their known counterparts was verified through comparison of morphological features and phylogenetic analysis. The study further provides detailed morphological descriptions, illustrative representations, and a phylogenetic tree, all of which contribute to the taxonomic positioning of these novel species.

Abstract:Xylaria, a large and cosmopolitan genus of Ascomycota, plays an important ecological role in forest ecology as wood-decomposers, and serve as a source of bioactive secondary metabolites. The present work concerns a survey of Xylaria from Southwest China. Four new species of Xylaria with pale-colored ascospores associated with fallen fruits and seeds are described and illustrated based on morphological and phylogenetic evidences. The phylogeny inferred from a combined dataset of ITS-RPB2-β-tubulin sequences supports these four species as distinct species. The four new taxa, namely Xylariarogersii, X. schimicola, X. theaceicola, and X. wallichii, are compared and contrasted against morphologically similar species. A dichotomous identification key to all the accepted species of Xylaria associated with fallen fruits and seeds is given.

Abstract:Morphological and phylogenetic analyses on samples of Xylaria species associated with fallen fruits from China were carried out, and two new species were described, namely X. aleuriticola and X. microcarpa . Xylaria aleuriticola is found on fallen fruits of Aleurites moluccana , and characterized by stromata dichotomously branched several times with long acute sterile apices, fertile parts roughened with perithecia and tomentose, and ellipsoid to fusiform ascospores. Xylaria microcarpa differs in its very small stromata with dark brown tomentum, light brown ascospores with an inconspicuous straight germ slit, and grows on leguminous pods. The differences between the new species and morphologically similar species are discussed. Phylogenetic analyses on ITS - RPB2 - TUB sequences confirmed that the two species are clearly separated from other species of the genus Xylaria . Xylaria liquidambaris is reported as a new record from China. A key to the Xylaria species associated with fallen fruits and seeds reported from China is provided to facilitate future studies of the genus.

Abstract:Xylariomycetidae comprises extremely diverse taxa that are widespread on decaying wood worldwide. An investigation of the diversity of microfungi on oil tree plantations in Sichuan Province was conducted during 2020–2021. Twelve saprobic taxa representing five species were identified as members of Amphisphaeriales and Xylariales through morphological comparisons. Phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, rpb2, tub2 and tef1 sequence data indicated a distinct clade formed by three strains within Xylariomycetidae, unrelated to any currently recognized families. Thus, a novel anthostomella-like genus, Bicellulospora, is proposed and treated as Xylariales genera incertae sedis. Bicellulospora is characterized by dark brown to black, immersed, subglobose ascomata with a clypeus, cylindrical asci, and hyaline to yellowish brown, inequilaterally ellipsoidal ascospores with a large upper cell and a dwarf lower cell. Two new species of Amphisphaeria, namely A. oleae and A. verniciae, are introduced based on multi-gene phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU, rpb2 and tub2) coupled with morphological characteristics. Amphisphaeria micheliae and Endocalyx ptychospermatis are reported as new host records.

Abstract:A study of the phylogeny and taxonomy of Xylaria species associated with fallen fruits and seeds within the genus Xylaria and among gernera of the family Xylariaceae based on ITS, RPB2, and β-tubulin sequences of 97 species from Xylaria and 7 other genera of the Xylariaceae were analyzed. The 7 genera included Amphirosellinia, Astrocystis, Kretzschmaria, Nemania, Podosordaria, Poronia, and Rosellinia. The results of our phylogenetic study showed that Xylaria species were distributed among five major clades, X1, X2, X3, X4, and X5. Clade X1 encompassed exclusively those Xylaria speices associated with termite nests, clade X2 composed Xylaria speices growing on leaves, fibrous pericarps and some on wood, clade X3 contained endocarp-inhabiting Xylaria species, clade X4 composed primarily of wood-inhabiting Xylaria speices, clade X5 composed primarily of species of Xylaria associated with leguminous pods. Xylaria appears to be a paraphyletic genus, with most of 7 genera included in it. Nine new taxa associated with fallen fruits and seeds, namely X. aleuriticola, X. cordiicola, X. meliicola, X. microcarpa, X. rogersii, X. schimicola, X. terminaliicola, X. theaceicola, and X. wallichii, are described, illustrated, and compared to morphologically similar species. Four species, X. carpophila, X. liquidambaris, X. oxyacanthae, and X. xanthinovelutina, were reported in China for the first time. A key to all the accepted species associated with fallen fruits and seeds in Xylaria from China was given.
