Abstract:Conflicts and tensions among major powers are often seen as clashes of interests between entities with significant influence. Nevertheless, from a historiographical standpoint, one would challenge the validity of such a simplistic view. The themes of nations that have to be considered full are undeniably formed by comprehensive historical and cultural components. Hence, it is essential to comprehensively evaluate cultural disparities to have a comprehensive understanding of interstate conflicts. This research uses case studies and qualitative methodologies to conduct a comparative analysis of the ideologies and national value identities that underlie Chinese-American interactions during the last decade. It focuses on the cultural distinctions inherited from China and the United States in order to get a deeper understanding of these connections. This research posits that the concept of democracy is firmly ingrained in the cultural and political fabric of these societies, giving rise to divergent ideologies. Numerous pieces of evidence indicate that the cultural aspects of a country significantly influence its political evolution.

Abstract:Many commentators in the post-Cold War period have attempted to transplant Tocqueville's thesis,that"the Great French Revolution further strengthened the'centralization'that the'old system'had already promoted",into the context of the twentieth-century China.This attempt overlooks the different positions of the two countries in the modem international system.In Tocqueville's vision,China occupies a position similar to that of Algeria,the French colony.However,how the colonized should fight for Tocqueville-style liberty is exact-ly the weak point in Tocqueville's thought.His differentiated attitudes towards colonizers and the colonized are deeply associated with his aristocratic concept of"liberty".A raised consciousness of China's place in the mod-em international system provides the key not only to re-understanding Tocqueville,but also to understanding the legitimacy of"Chinese-style modernization".In fact,"Chinese-style modernization"is based on the negation of the legitimacy of colonialism.A deep reflection on how colonialism has shaped the intellectual tradition of ar-ea studies in the modern West will help us establish China's subjectivity in the construction of her"independent knowledge system".

Abstract:China has been a multi-ethnic political polity for over two thousand years. “Culturalisation” of ethnic minorities in peripheries has been a tradition in China deeply rooted in the Confucianism. This tradition resulted in a united-pluralistic polity with a huge population and the non-stop writing history throughout a series of dynasties. The People's Republic began to adopt the policies of the former USSR since the 1950s and gave ethnic minorities more political status, or what is called “politicisation” of ethnic minorities in China. This policy has improved socioeconomic development of minority groups and promoted group corporations but also has strengthened the group consciousness among the minorities. The collapse of the Soviet Union provides a lesson that this policy orientation might provide an institutional basis for national disintegration when internal and external powers work together. Meanwhile, the “equality de facto” has been the goal of official ethnic policy since the 1950s and many policies have been designed and practiced in favour of minority groups, but there also some debate on its social consequences which also need our attention.
Economic development, social integration, and the subjective well-being of residents in the western regions of China: based on the perspective of multi-ethnic China

Abstract:Abstract Based on a large sample of survey data collected from 12 Chinese provinces, municipalities directly under the central government and autonomous regions in the western regions of China, this article discusses the subjective well-being of the residents of all ethnic groups in the western regions, along the two dimensions of economic development and social integration. The results show that the overall subjective well-being of all ethnic groups in Western China is good, and the percentage of people who indicated that they often feel happy is generally higher than the percentage of those who often feel unhappy. The residents of ethnic minority status such as the Huis and the Uyghurs experience good subjective well-being more often than residents of other ethnic groups. Microscopic indicators, such as the level of household income, and macroscopic indicators, such as the level of regional economic development, can exert significant positive impacts on the subjective well-being of residents from various ethnic groups. In addition, emotional integration, trust-based integration, and integration through communication—as important variables of social identity and social acceptance—can also have significant positive impacts on improving the subjective well-being of residents of all ethnic groups. The article concludes that, for the residents of all ethnic groups living in the less developed western regions of China, economic development and increased income remain the key means of improving the subjective well-being, and promoting inter-ethnic interactions and strengthening social integration are also positive methods of effectively improving the subjective well-being.

Abstract:In a historical perspective, the great significance of the discussion on social sciences in China consists in the fact that it symbolizes the termination of its shaping stage of imitation, so this inquiry may manifest itself as a turning-point for the social sciences in China. The constructive independence of social sciences requires the elimination of the dualistic antithesis between standardization/scientificization and localization/Chinalization. And it ought to be the knowledge of local-globalization originating from the two-way promotion of the particularization of universalism and the universalization of particularism. Additionally, the independence of social sciences in China must be achieved in the background of globalization, which involves sophisticated interactions of different regions across the world and complex interactions of different fields at home.

Abstract:'Nation' and 'ethnic group' are distinct concepts in Western literature. But under the strong influence of the Soviet Model of 'nationality', China established a similar framework dealing ethnic relations since the 1950s. This framework is different from the Chinese tradition of over 2000 years. Because the Soviet Union has disintegrated, China should rethink the Soviet model in comparison with Chinese tradition as well as the 'nation-ethnic group relations' in the western nations. 'De-politicization of ethnicity' in China might lead China to a new direction for harmonious society construction.

Abstract:Abstract By comparing five aspects between China and the West—ideas, model of political participation, path of economic and social development, pattern of protection of language and culture rights, and construction of national cohesion and social (Minzu) solidarity, this paper reveals that the Chinese path of integration and development among all ethnic groups has the following characteristics: the ideas of equality, solidarity, mutual assistance and harmony among all ethnic groups; the integrative participation model of all ethnic groups under the unified leadership of the Communist Party of China; the integration on the economic and social development (common prosperity and development); equal protection of the language and culture rights of all ethnic groups; strong sense of national cohesion and social solidarity of fifty-six ethnic groups, based on the equal emphasis on the individual and collective rights as well as the close integration between political value and traditional cultural value. In general, China’s ethnic policies embody both specific rights and the level of community with a common future. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, relations between ethnic groups are harmonious and positive, and development of all ethnic groups tends to achieve a real equality. In Western countries, ethnic (or racial) relations remain relatively stable with fluctuations from time to time, and the development gap between ethnic groups has a trend of further expansion. Different ideas, systems and cultural concepts lead to different ethnic relationships and current situations of development between China and the West.

Abstract:The great concerns and deep misunderstandings the western public shows towards Tibet have a profound historical and mental origin,that is,the "myth of Shangri-La" about old Tibet. The expedition of German explorers in Tibet,whose travel writings and memoirs created a German "myth of Tibet" and gave a highly colored account of China's "negative image",was the major way through which the Germans kept contact with Tibet before the Second World War. It deeply affected the Germans’ mental structure concerning the Tibet issue. In view of this we should pay more attention to the "foundational" work,thus smashing the "myth of Shangri-La" by effective ways and telling the western public a true Tibet.

Abstract:Following the recent trends of globalization and regionalization, the idea of Asia has been revived in political, economic, and cultural fields. This essay examines some of the various uses of this idea in modern East Asian and especially Chinese history. The essay consists of four parts. Part One discusses the derivativeness of the idea of Asia, that is, how this idea developed from modern European history, especially the nineteenth century European narrative of "World History," and it points out how the early modern Japanese "theory of shedding Asia" derived from this narrative. Part Two studies the relationship between the idea of Asia and two forms of Narodism against the background of the Chinese and Russian revolutions-one, exemplified by Russian Narodism, attempted to use Asian particularity to challenge modern capitalism; the other, represented by Sun Yat-sen, attempted to construct a nation-state according to a socialist revolutionary program, and to develop agricultural capitalism under the particular social conditions of Asia. Part Three considers the differences and tensions between the "Great Asia-ism" of Chinese revolutionaries such as Sun and the Japanese idea of Toyo (East Asia), and it discusses the need to overcome the categories of nation-state and international relations in order to understand the question of Asia. Part Four discusses the need to go beyond early modern maritime-centered accounts, nationalist frameworks, and Eurocentrism in re-examining the question of Asia through historical research by focusing on the particular legacies of Asia (such as the tributary system) and the problems of "early modernity.".

Abstract:Abstract: Through the 1950s, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) considered nationality disunity to be a product of "great Han chauvinism." But what happens when history's bad guys are not Han? In parts of China's Northwest, the party identified Hui Muslim elites as the main agents of nationality exploitation and Tibetans as their principal targets. It therefore declared Tibetans of all classes to be victims of nationality exploitation and ordered that "good" Muslims be distinguished from "bad," a task made more urgent by a string of uprisings that engulfed several Muslim-majority areas of the Qinghai-Gansu Highlands from 1949 to 1953. While echoes can be found in the late Qing state's response to Muslim rebellion, this article argues that the CCP's approach to the "Hui question" must be viewed as part of a particular practice of minoritization and a framework for conceptualizing the new socialist nation-state that would leave Muslims and other non-Han communities susceptible to majoritarian-state violence.

Abstract:This article examines two existing "academic regions" in Chinese anthropology:the Southeastern and Southwestern models of anthropology.The author points out that the "bifurcation" of Southeastern "complex"of communities,lineages,markets,and folk religions and Southwestern "ways of being ethnic"has created a serious problem for the anthropology of Chinese civilization.He also argues that to further "internal understandings"of either region,it is necessary to think "externally" — to bring "external relationships" into "internal structures".The author has written extensively on sinological anthropology and ethnology as well as Chinese social science in general.In this context,he criticizes anthropologies in China and abroad of their common negligence of the relationships which have played important roles in the configuration of the regions under the empire-turned nation.

Abstract:This article takes a look at Chinese state policies toward the predominantly Buddhist community in Tibet from the 1950s till the year 2008 and analyzes to what extent these policies have changed, if at all. After providing some background information in relation to state ideology, the article looks at the decades of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and gives an overview of state policies. Many of these policies show that the Chinese state has followed a policy of high handedness toward this region, which has broader implications in relation to human rights issues and security. “Reforms” introduced in Tibet have had more to do with tightening state control over Tibet rather than raising the material standards of the indigenous people. Ultimately, to understand the complex situation in Tibet, one needs to examine at the interaction between religion, nationalism and state reform in the region. The article argues that state reform needs to be more balanced, taking into consideration the religious sentiments of the local people.

Abstract:China's western borderlands, heavily non-Han in population, were still weakly territorialized in the Republican period. In 1950, the arrival of the People's Liberation Army in northern Sichuan – then a largely Tibetan space locally managed by rgyal (kings) and lamas – began a multi-decade confrontation with Tibetan indigeneity. The purpose of this article is to determine why the Party government, despite generous financial inputs, has had more difficulty integrating and transforming this ethnic group than almost all the other 54 minorities (minzu). Four widely differing efforts can be distinguished at four conjunctures in the People's Republic: 1) the establishment of the new "autonomous" prefecture of Aba in the "United Front" of the 1950s; 2) violent Maoist social revolution between 1958 and 1968; 3) a Chinese tourist boom beginning in the 1980s; and 4) policies of ethnocultural assimilation since 2013. The first and third modes of territorialization could be described as administrative and neoliberal, and both accommodated Tibetan indigenous elements in what may be called non-state territorialization. The second and fourth have in different ways been authoritarian and assimilative, with the state aiming to make Tibetans, with other non-Han minzu across China, thoroughly Chinese in culture and identification. Despite successes in objective territoriality – in making Aba a state space – the party-state cannot easily superimpose a Chinese identity on Aba and other Tibetans. Some of its actions – the early naming of a "Tibetan" minzu and sharp policy swings in religion and education -have tended to strengthen, not undermine, distinct Tibetan identification.

Abstract:The paper analyses the Sino-American contacts of 2009–2012 on the Tibet issue, which had occupied an important place in China–US relations since the 1980s. With Barack Obama moving into the White House, the US adopted a softer policy aimed at strengthening the relations with China. However, the Tibet issue remained a source of conflict and disagreement between Beijing and Washington. US leaders believed that China was pursuing a tough policy towards the peoples of Tibet and suggested some ways to settle the issue. Beijing, in its turn, saw this as an interference in China’s internal affairs. Having examined the works of Russian and foreign researchers, the author comes to the conclusion that for the United States the issue of human rights in Tibet was not of strategic importance, but, primarily, an opportunity to discredit China on the international arena, as any decision taken by the country would be deemed insufficient. Understanding this, Beijing reacted quite sharply to Washington’s comments, closing the door to further discussion. The paper’s chronological framework spans from the beginning of Barack Obama’s (2009) to the end of Hu Jintao’s (2012) term in office. The author turns to various sources in English and Chinese, which gives the article a significant element of novelty.

Abstract:The consciousness of non-Han nationalities in modern China evolved around a deep antipathy to the Qing, assimilationist ideas, and pretentious multi-ethnicism. The concepts of equality among nationalities and right to self-determination entered into the discourse of nation- and state-building in China under the influence of Lenin’s revolutionary ideals and Stalin’s views on ‘the national question’. The Communist Party of China (CPC) has struggled to reconcile these concepts with its nationalist agenda since its inception in 1921. The CPC later innovated ethno-regional autonomy for minorities and developed corresponding institutions. This article argues that the Party’s three main agendas of national unification and interethnic unity, developmental goals, and majoritarian nationalism have all complicated its ties with ethnic minorities, and evaluates how the present leadership of the 100-year-old Party has been managing the relationship.

Abstract:The Ecological Civilization (Eco-Civilization) is a Chinese political framework to advance a renewed human–nature relationship that engenders a sustainable form of economic development, and its narratives provide political impetus to conserve ethnic minority cultures whose traditional practices are aligned with state-sanctioned efforts for environmental protection. This official rhetoric is important in Xishuangbanna, a prefecture in Yunnan province renowned for its lush tropical rainforests and Dai ethnic minority. This article explores the relationship between Dai cultural identity and the Chinese state in the context of environmental concerns and development goals. Historical analyses of ethnic policies and transformations of landscapes and livelihoods are presented alongside descriptions of contemporary efforts by Dai community members and the Chinese state to enact Eco-Civilization directives, and they illustrate paradoxical circumstances in which political rhetoric and practice are seemingly at odds with one another, yet often contradict in such ways so as to further the Chinese state agenda. Moreover, case studies demonstrate how new policies and sustainable development efforts have often perpetuated structures and ideologies of the Maoist era to reinforce inequalities between central state powers and already marginalized ethnic minorities. These dynamics warrant further consideration as the Chinese government continues to champion its leadership in environmental governance.
On the Fundamental Issue in China's Transitional Society

Abstract:There are three dimensions of a life-world,namely,the material life,the social life,and the spiritual life.As life can be maintained in long time,it accumulates along the aforementioned three dimensions its tradition.Any change to the life-world,internal or external,therefore can be projected into the three dimensions,as a material change,a social change,or a spiritual change.Evolution of the tradition may be caused by a strong enough change conflicting with tradition.A transitional society is characterized by sustained conflicts between changes and the tradition.A significant change in China's social structure during the past two centuries can be expressed as the constant expansion of thesmall-worldnetwork structure which is compatible with the market economy.This change has been accompanied by apower-lawpattern of distribution of opportunities,wealth,and power among the population,and thus broadly triggered the issue of justice—first of all as an urgent demand for fairness.This is the primary form of the fundamental issue in China.Because of the under-development of spiritual life,the pressing demand for fairness can only be met by reforms within the material-social life-world,namely political reforms.The basic direction of the urgent reform will be to stop or alleviate the power-law distribution of powers.But this requires a radical change of the network structure of the life-world from efficiency dominated to sentiments dominated.The demand for a change from efficiency principle to the principle of the heart-feeling,is the higher-level form of the fundamental issue in China.
