Abstract:The energy crisis and environmental protection are gaining increasing concern in recent years. ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has a significant impact on the total electricity consumption all over the world. Telecom networks, being an important part of ICT, consume significant energy since more network equipment is deployed annually. Specifically, in IP-over-WDM networks, energy is consumed by network elements at both IP and WDM layers. Routers in the IP layer are the largest energy consumer in this architecture, and current network infrastructures have no energy-saving scheme, so a large amount of energy is wasted when traffic load is low. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to save energy in IP-over-WDM networks by shutting down idle line cards and chassis of routers based on time-of-the-day network traffic variation. A method based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is proposed to ensure that the energy cost incurred by the IP routers and optical cross-connects is minimized by our approach. We also propose some possible approaches to minimize potential traffic disruption when the network elements are shut down.

Abstract:With the aim to address the problem that current energy-saving algorithms in the IP network were low practical,an energy-saving method in the reconfigurable network architecture based on its natural features was proposed that the central server unified manages the routing configuration of all the routers.The method firstly using the modified OSPF protocol algorithm to determine a candidate link set in which all the links were probably closed or sleep,then the multi-commodity model was utilized to remap the traffic volume of these links to other physical paths.Thus,some links can be idle since their data flows had been redirected.It was reasonable to power off idle physical links for the purpose of saving energy.Finally,the simulated experiments had verified the effects of saving energy and the differences between the proposed algorithm and the high recognized energy-saving method –GreenTE were given.

Abstract:The explosive growth of Internet drives the development of high performance router. Applying distributed architecture, today's multi-shelf IP core router can provide flexible switch capacity from 1Tbps to 100Tbps. However, the more capacities it has, the more power it consumes, which is becoming a key barrier for bandwidth scaling. This paper studies the energy awareness in design of multi-shelf IP over WDM networks. we analyze the power consumption of different components in multi-shelf IP over WDM networks, including multi-shelf IP core router, ROADM and WDM line system, to deduce the power estimation model. Then, targeting at power minimization, a 2-step MILP design model is proposed, which provides sufficient design details for implementation. Simulation results indicate that, our design approach can minimize the number of both line-cards and router chassis, so performs far better than traditional hop by hop approach in energy saving.

Abstract:We propose a MILP based design model for energy reduction in IP over dynamic optical networks. By virtual topology reconfiguration, it can dynamically switch off unnecessary networking equipments, and reduce the power caused by over-provision. Abstract:Energy-efficient time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network has been intensely investigated. However, conventional schemes aimed at energy efficiency may bring about repeated power-state transitions between sleep mode and active mode, resulting in periodic device-temperature cycling and frequent wavelength reassignment, which will greatly deteriorate network quality of service. These side effects become non-trivial when traffic fluctuates sharply as expected in the future. In this letter, we propose a wavelength-postponed-switching-off (WPS) strategy to reduce power-state transitions by means of postponing the power-off of redundant wavelengths. Redundant wavelengths represent wavelengths that are supposed to be powered off by conventional schemes when traffic declines. Illustrative results show that, the WPS strategy can provide a balanced performance of both energy efficiency and device lifetime, while decreasing service interruption caused by turning ON or OFF the equipment.

Abstract:The inter-cycle sleep design previously proposed as a power-saving scheme for next-generation Ethernet passive optical networks (NG-EPONs) is able to effectively decrease the power consumption of heavy-load traffic. However, with a medium to high traffic load, these networks may still suffer from a high level of power consumption if no enhanced mechanisms are used. It was noted that the optical line terminal (OLT) often fully opens all communication channels at a medium to heavy load. Moreover, the number of opened channels was changed cyclically according to the traffic loading status. Accordingly, optical network units (ONUs) may be frequently allocated to different channels with changing loads. This may lead to inefficient operation and result in significant channel tuning delays. We thus propose a loading-aware time-division multiple access (TDMA) mechanism that allows the OLT to reserve a maximum bandwidth for each ONU when the network experiences heavy-load traffic. The performance results of our simulations reveal that the proposed scheme is able to reduce power consumption for targeted medium to high loads since ONUs under such loads can extend their sleep time because the cycle length is maximized. Moreover, the total delay is maintained at a relatively low level after applying the proposed scheme since the tuning delay is reduced significantly; however, the transmission delay is slightly increased due to the increased cycle length.

Abstract:The explosion of Internet traffic calls for quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed packet transmission in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with high energy and bandwidth efficiency. Conventional routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms focus on circuit switching, which does not well meet this requirement due to the bursty nature of IP traffic. Based on a novel traffic matrix decomposition technique, we study the joint design of traffic scheduling and routing in a reconfigurable WDM optical network to improve energy and bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, every node in the network is equipped with a set of parallel tunable lasers, each with a reconfiguration overhead. A dynamic matrix is adopted to model the traffic among the nodes and is decomposed into a set of transmission configurations (i.e., traffic scheduling). The configurations are then fulfilled by tuning the parallel lasers and routing the scheduled traffic under the topology constraint, to achieve loss-free packet transmissions with bounded delay (i.e., QoS guarantee). We reveal that a tradeoff exists between the packet delay and the required number of tunable lasers. The latter is then minimized under a given packet delay to save energy. As far as we know, this is the first work to adopt traffic matrix decomposition in WDM networks to save energy. The proposed framework is validated by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:As the Internet continues to grow, the power consumption of telecommunication networks is rising at a considerable speed, which seriously increases the operational expenditure and greenhouse gas emission. Since optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks are currently the most promising network infrastructures, power saving issue on these networks has received more attention in recent years. In traditional optical WDM networks, a large amount of power is drained by the redundant idle resources and reserved backup resources although these powered on resources do not carry traffic in most of the time. In order to reduce the network power consumption, turning off the corresponding network components or switching them to a low-power, standby state (or called sleep mode) is a promising greening approach. In this paper, we study the power-aware provisioning strategies and propose a sleep mode based Power-Aware Shared Path Protection (PASPP) heuristic algorithm to achieve the power efficiency of optical WDM networks. By jointly utilizing link-cost and fiber-cost in path routing, resource assignment, and resource release, PASPP makes working paths and backup paths converge on different fibers as much as possible, and switch idle and backup components to sleep mode to realize power saving. Simulation results show that our PASPP can obtain notable power saving and achieve satisfactory tradeoff between power efficiency and blocking probability with respect to Power-Unaware Shared Path Protection (PUSPP). Abstract:With the rapid growth of network scale and traffic,Internet energy consumption issue is becoming increasingly severe.We conduct a study on the energy optimization of IP(Internet Protocol)over TDM(Time Division Multiplexing)over WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) networks.After the energy-saving mechanisms are analyzed,we propose a multi-layer network energy consumption optimization model,namely ITO model,which takes account of the modular construction of network equipment and the architecture of multi-layer networks,and uses the method of the coordination between traffic flow control and network resources configuration and management to reduce the network energy dissipation.The ITO model makes optimal distribution and routing of the traffic flows between multiple network layers so that network equipment can use multi-granularity module sleep mechanism to minimize the power of entire multi-layer networks according to their traffic loads.Simulation results indicate that our model can effectively reduce network energy consumption,and the network power consumption can reduce to 24%～ 38% of the peek value when the traffic is low.In addition,our experiments also investigate the impacts of the following factors on the network energy consumption optimization:traffic grooming and bypass,the combinations of different network layers,the dynamic power consumption and the modular structure of network equipment,which can provide a reference for the building of energy efficient green networks.

Abstract:Energy efficiency has long been an important design consideration in Passive Optical Networks. Over the years, significant efforts have been seen in reducing the power consumption on user side equipment, i. e., Optical Network Units. As the capacity of PONs are increasing in terms of the number of wavelength channels and the line-rate, it is equally important to improve the power efficiency on the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) side. In this paper, we will introduce our recent efforts in reducing the cost and power consumption of the OLTs, by introducing dynamic wavelength sharing and switching. Our results show that under typical ONU online profiles, the proposed dynamic wavelength sharing schemes can reduce up to 70% power consumption, and also can reduce the number of required wavelengths by a similar number in a multiple-PON environment, without bringing in significant loss in ONU availability and performance.

Abstract:Environmental and economic concerns promote research on designing energy-efficient Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexed Ethernet Passive Optical Network (TWDM-EPON), which is the future extension to TDM-EPON. In TDM-EPON, a plethora of research is already present to achieve energy savings at Optical Network Units (ONUs) which can easily be applied for TWDM-EPON ONUs. However, TWDM-EPON provides an additional opportunity for saving energy at the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). All existing protocols have primarily been designed for saving energy at the OLT receivers. The protocols to save energy at the OLT receives depends only on the Up-Stream(US) traffic scheduling while its transmitter counterpart depends on both US and Down-Stream (DS) scheduling since the OLT transmits GATE message along with DS traffic. The US and DS scheduling have a basic difference. The MAC protocol doesn't allow scheduling of US traffic of an ONU after its REPORT arrival at multiple disjoint time slots. However, this restriction is absent for DS traffic and hence, the grant-size of an ONU can be partitioned and every part can be scheduled at different times. In this paper, we propose a method for saving energy at the OLT transmitters in TWDM-EPON while satisfying the SLAs. This includes a heuristic algorithm to partition the DS grant and schedule them. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed method provides a significant improvement in energy efficiency as compared to existing protocols (up to 45%).

Abstract:Environmental concerns have motivated network designers to further reduce energy consumption of access networks. This paper focuses on reducing energy consumption of Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) as one of the most efficient transmission technologies for broadband access. In EPON, the downstream traffic is sent from the optical line terminal (OLT) located at the central office to all optical network units (ONUs). Each ONU checks all arrival downstream packets and selects the downstream packets destined to itself. Therefore, receivers at ONUs have to always stay awake, thus consuming a large amount of energy. Contrariwise, an ONU transmitter can be triggered by the arrival of the upstream traffic and so it can go to the low power mode when no traffic is observed. Putting ONUs into the low power mode during light traffic is a known strategy for energy saving. In this article, we address the downstream challenge and also improve the ONU transmitter sleep time by proposing a simple sleep control scheme. We also propose an upstream and a downstream sleep-aware traffic scheduling scheme to avoid missing the packets during the sleep states. The proposed sleep control scheme does not need the handshake process and is based on the mutual inference at OLT and ONU. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can save energy as much as 60% when the network traffic is light.

Abstract:In the electrical/optical hybrid data center networks, the switching fabric is consuming a significant amount of energy. Regarding the fact that the data center traffic is time-varying, this paper studies the energy-efficient scaling approaches to manage the ON/OFF state of optical circuit switches and electrical packet switches to save energy while ensuring service quality. Simulation results show that the energy consumption of the hybrid data centers is saved, and the performance of the data centers is not degraded significantly.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to improve the energy efficiency of wavelength division multiplexing - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing - passive optical networks (WDM-OFDM-PONs). By using an N × M opto-mechanic switch in optical line terminal (OLT), an OFDM modulation module is shared by several channels to deliver data to multiple users with low traffic demands during non-peak hours of the day, thus greatly reducing the number of operating devices and minimizing the energy consumption of the OLT. An experiment utilizing one OFDM modulation module to serve three optical network units (ONUs) in a WDM-OFDM-PON is performed to verify the feasibility of our proposal. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation show that the proposed scheme can achieve a saving of 23.6% in the energy consumption of the OFDM modulation modules compared to conventional WDM-OFDM-PON.

Abstract:Maximizing the optical network unit's (ONU) sleep time is an effective approach for achieving maxi- mum energy conservation in green Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs). While overlapping downstream and upstream ONU transmissions can maximize the ONU sleep time, it jeopardizes the quality of service (QoS) performance of the network, especially for downstream traffic in case the overlapping is based on the upstream time slot. In this paper, we study the downstream traffic performance in green EPONs under the limited service discipline and the upstream-based overlapped time window. Specifically, we first derive the expected mean packet delay, and then present a closed-form expression of the ONU sleep time, setting identical upstream/downstream transmission cycle times based on a maximum downstream traffic delay re- quirement. With the proposed system model, we present a novel downstream bandwidth allocation scheme for energy conservation in green EPONs. Simulation results verify the proposed model and highlight the advantages of our scheme over conventional approaches.

Abstract:Economical and environmental concerns necessitate network engineers to focus on energy-efficient access network design. The optical network units (ONUs), being predominantly responsible for the energy consumption of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON), motivates us towards designing a novel protocol for saving energy at ONU. The proposed protocol exploits different low power modes (LPM) and opts for the suitable one using traffic prediction. This scheme provides a significant improvement of energy-efficiency especially at high load (~ 40%) over existing protocols. A better understanding of the performance and a deeper insight into several design aspects can only be addressed through a detailed mathematical analysis. The proposed protocol involves traffic prediction which infringes Markovian property. However, some pragmatic assumptions along with a proper selection of observation instances and state descriptions allow us to form a Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC) of the proposed algorithm. Thus, the primary objective of this paper is to propose a novel scheme for achieving energy-efficiency at ONU and mathematically analyze the performance of it with the help of a DTMC. The analysis reveals that the energy-efficiency is more sensitive to the power consumption of doze mode as compared to other LPM while the effect of sleep-to-wake-up time is minor.
