Abstract:With the aim to address the problem that current energy-saving algorithms in the IP network were low practical,an energy-saving method in the reconfigurable network architecture based on its natural features was proposed that the central server unified manages the routing configuration of all the routers.The method firstly using the modified OSPF protocol algorithm to determine a candidate link set in which all the links were probably closed or sleep,then the multi-commodity model was utilized to remap the traffic volume of these links to other physical paths.Thus,some links can be idle since their data flows had been redirected.It was reasonable to power off idle physical links for the purpose of saving energy.Finally,the simulated experiments had verified the effects of saving energy and the differences between the proposed algorithm and the high recognized energy-saving method –GreenTE were given.

Abstract:The explosion of Internet traffic calls for quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed packet transmission in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with high energy and bandwidth efficiency. Conventional routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms focus on circuit switching, which does not well meet this requirement due to the bursty nature of IP traffic. Based on a novel traffic matrix decomposition technique, we study the joint design of traffic scheduling and routing in a reconfigurable WDM optical network to improve energy and bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, every node in the network is equipped with a set of parallel tunable lasers, each with a reconfiguration overhead. A dynamic matrix is adopted to model the traffic among the nodes and is decomposed into a set of transmission configurations (i.e., traffic scheduling). The configurations are then fulfilled by tuning the parallel lasers and routing the scheduled traffic under the topology constraint, to achieve loss-free packet transmissions with bounded delay (i.e., QoS guarantee). We reveal that a tradeoff exists between the packet delay and the required number of tunable lasers. The latter is then minimized under a given packet delay to save energy. As far as we know, this is the first work to adopt traffic matrix decomposition in WDM networks to save energy. The proposed framework is validated by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:As the Internet continues to grow, the power consumption of telecommunication networks is rising at a considerable speed, which seriously increases the operational expenditure and greenhouse gas emission. Since optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks are currently the most promising network infrastructures, power saving issue on these networks has received more attention in recent years. In traditional optical WDM networks, a large amount of power is drained by the redundant idle resources and reserved backup resources although these powered on resources do not carry traffic in most of the time. In order to reduce the network power consumption, turning off the corresponding network components or switching them to a low-power, standby state (or called sleep mode) is a promising greening approach. In this paper, we study the power-aware provisioning strategies and propose a sleep mode based Power-Aware Shared Path Protection (PASPP) heuristic algorithm to achieve the power efficiency of optical WDM networks. By jointly utilizing link-cost and fiber-cost in path routing, resource assignment, and resource release, PASPP makes working paths and backup paths converge on different fibers as much as possible, and switch idle and backup components to sleep mode to realize power saving. Simulation results show that our PASPP can obtain notable power saving and achieve satisfactory tradeoff between power efficiency and blocking probability with respect to Power-Unaware Shared Path Protection (PUSPP). Abstract:The energy crisis and environmental protection are gaining increasing concern in recent years. ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has a significant impact on the total electricity consumption all over the world. Telecom networks, being an important part of ICT, consume significant energy since more network equipment is deployed annually. Specifically, in IP-over-WDM networks, energy is consumed by network elements at both IP and WDM layers. Routers in the IP layer are the largest energy consumer in this architecture, and current network infrastructures have no energy-saving scheme, so a large amount of energy is wasted when traffic load is low. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to save energy in IP-over-WDM networks by shutting down idle line cards and chassis of routers based on time-of-the-day network traffic variation. A method based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is proposed to ensure that the energy cost incurred by the IP routers and optical cross-connects is minimized by our approach. We also propose some possible approaches to minimize potential traffic disruption when the network elements are shut down.

Abstract:Energy-efficient time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network has been intensely investigated. However, conventional schemes aimed at energy efficiency may bring about repeated power-state transitions between sleep mode and active mode, resulting in periodic device-temperature cycling and frequent wavelength reassignment, which will greatly deteriorate network quality of service. These side effects become non-trivial when traffic fluctuates sharply as expected in the future. In this letter, we propose a wavelength-postponed-switching-off (WPS) strategy to reduce power-state transitions by means of postponing the power-off of redundant wavelengths. Redundant wavelengths represent wavelengths that are supposed to be powered off by conventional schemes when traffic declines. Illustrative results show that, the WPS strategy can provide a balanced performance of both energy efficiency and device lifetime, while decreasing service interruption caused by turning ON or OFF the equipment.

Abstract:Low-rate personal area network (LR-WPAN) specified by the IEEE Std. 802.15.4 is characterized by low complexity, low cost and low power. It holds great potential in many fields, such as telemetry, patient monitoring, and industrial automated control. Yet one of the most important determining factors is the power consumption, since most standards compliant devices are believed to be battery-powered.In this paper, we analyze power consumption of the sleep mode, specifically, the indirect mode in downlink transmission and the direct mode in uplink transmission. Analysis by other researchers and by our own indicates that overhearing presents a significant problem in energy waste and should be avoided. Yet unlike the case of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) where RTS/CTS mechanism is specifically adopted to this end, LR-WPAN is designed to operate without RTS/CTS to reduce system complexity. To attack the overhearing problem, we propose a sleep mechanism in the backoff stage in uplink transmission. The efficiency of such mechanism is evaluated analytically using the system model that we have recently developed and is verified numerically via ns-2.

Abstract:We propose a MILP based design model for energy reduction in IP over dynamic optical networks. By virtual topology reconfiguration, it can dynamically switch off unnecessary networking equipments, and reduce the power caused by over-provision. Simulation results indicate that the proposed design can significantly improve network energy performance.

Abstract:A single watchful sleep mode (WSM) combines the features of both cyclic sleep mode (CSM) and cyclic doze mode (CDM) in a single process by periodically turning ON and OFF the optical receiver (RX) of the optical network terminal (ONT) in a symmetric manner. This results in almost the same energy savings for the ONTs as achieved by the CSM process while significantly reducing the upstream delays. However, in this study we argue that the periodic ON and OFF periods of the ONT RX is not an energy efficient approach, as it reduces the ONT Asleep (AS) state time. Instead, this study proposes an adaptive watchful sleep mode (AWSM) in which the RX ON time of ONT is minimized during ONT Watch state by choosing it according to the length of the traffic queue of the type 1 (T1) traffic class. The performance of AWSM is compared with standard WSM and CSM schemes. The investigation reveals that by minimizing the RX ON time, the AWSM scheme achieves up to 71% average energy saving per ONT at low traffic loads. The comparative study results show that the ONT energy savings achieved by AWSM are 9% higher than the symmetric WSM with almost the same delay and delay variance performance.

Abstract:An adaptive hybrid reservation protocol (AHRP) is proposed for the purpose of quickly and efficiently establishing a lightpath in dynamic wavelength routed networks. This protocol uses a special reservation-and-probe (RESV_PROB) packet and extends the signaling to integrate forward reservation and backward reservation into one monolithic process. To decrease the blocking probability that happens in cases where two end nodes associated with a specific link simultaneously reserve the same wavelength, an adaptive wavelength selection policy is specially employed in AHRP. A discrete-event simulation tool based on ns-2 is developed to investigate AHRP's performance, including its blocking probability, average lightpath setup delay, and signaling overhead. AHRP is also compared with existing protocols. Results show that during highly dynamic traffic conditions, AHRP possesses the lowest blocking probability, shorter setup delay, and less signaling overhead.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an ant-based algorithm for dynamic routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) in WDM optical networks under the wavelength continuity constraint. By adopting a new routing table structure and keeping a number of ants in the network to cooperatively explore the network states and continuously update the routing tables, our new ant algorithm can efficiently support the ants' foraging tasks of route selection and wavelength assignment in WDM networks, and allow a connection to be setup promptly on arrival with a small setup time. Extensive simulation results based on the ns-2 network simulator indicate that the proposed algorithm can adapt well to traffic variations and achieves a lower blocking probability than the fixed routing algorithm.

Abstract:Energy optimization has become a crucial issue in the realm of ICT. This paper addresses the problem of energy consumption in a Metro Ethernet network. Ethernet technology deployments have been increasing tremendously because of their simplicity and low cost. However, much research remains to be conducted to address energy efficiency in Ethernet networks. In this paper, we propose a novel Energy Aware Forwarding Strategy for Metro Ethernet networks based on a modification of the Internet Energy Aware Routing (EAR) algorithm. Our contribution identifies the set of links to turn off and maintain links with minimum energy impact on the active state. Our proposed algorithm could be a superior choice for use in networks with low saturation, as it involves a tradeoff between maintaining good network performance and minimizing the active links in the network. Performance evaluation shows that, at medium load traffic, energy savings of 60% can be achieved. At high loads, energy savings of 40% can be achieved without affecting the network performance.

A Novel Dynamic Routing Scheme In Ip Over Wdm Networks

Abstract:To have a better network usage in IP (Internet protocol) over WDM (Wavelength division multiplexing) networks, it is important to take into account the combined topology and resource usage information at the IP and optical layers, i.e, for an arriving request, there should be a scheme to determine whether it is better to route it over the existing topology or to open new wavelength paths. Moreover, lightpath length should be considered in many cases especially for different QoS (Quality of service) applications and traffic engineering. To solve these issues, this paper develops an integrated dynamic length-constrained routing algorithm based on transforming-graph. As the proposed routing scheme makes full use of the statistic information of the users' bandwidth requirement and considers carefully both the IP and optical layers' information, thus reduces greatly the bandwidth fragment which can not be used by any other subsequent requests, i.e, an improved network resource usage. Simulation results show that the developed scheme performs very well in terms of performance metrics such as the number of rejected requests and the network average blocking probability.
A Loading-Aware TDMA Sleep Scheme to Improve Power Consumption Performance on Medium to High Traffic for NG-EPON Networks

Abstract:The inter-cycle sleep design previously proposed as a power-saving scheme for next-generation Ethernet passive optical networks (NG-EPONs) is able to effectively decrease the power consumption of heavy-load traffic. However, with a medium to high traffic load, these networks may still suffer from a high level of power consumption if no enhanced mechanisms are used. It was noted that the optical line terminal (OLT) often fully opens all communication channels at a medium to heavy load. Moreover, the number of opened channels was changed cyclically according to the traffic loading status. Accordingly, optical network units (ONUs) may be frequently allocated to different channels with changing loads. This may lead to inefficient operation and result in significant channel tuning delays. We thus propose a loading-aware time-division multiple access (TDMA) mechanism that allows the OLT to reserve a maximum bandwidth for each ONU when the network experiences heavy-load traffic. The performance results of our simulations reveal that the proposed scheme is able to reduce power consumption for targeted medium to high loads since ONUs under such loads can extend their sleep time because the cycle length is maximized. Moreover, the total delay is maintained at a relatively low level after applying the proposed scheme since the tuning delay is reduced significantly; however, the transmission delay is slightly increased due to the increased cycle length.

Energy-efficient Rate Adaptation for Outdoor Long Distance WiFi Links

Abstract:WiLD (WiFi-based Long Distance) mesh networks have been broadly deployed for bringing extremely low-cost IT revolution to developing regions. However, external WiFi/non-WiFi interferences severely aggravate network performance. Besides, over-provisioning transmission power without considering the channel dynamics and interferences can result in unnecessary energy consumption, which will eventually lead to the network outage. In this paper, an energy efficient rate adaptation algorithm is proposed for WiLD links. It adopts an online measurement of FDR (Frame Delivery Ratio)-RSSI mapping to choose bit rate based on the joint considerations of RSSI and transmission power. Moreover, a novel algorithm called CNP-CUSUM (Continuous Non-Parameter-Cumulative Sum) is presented to detect changes of external interference intensity at receivers by leveraging beacon loss ratio statistics. Our simulation results show that it significantly outperforms fixed bit-rate, fixed transmission power schemes by achieving higher energy efficiency and considerable link throughput gain.

Abstract:Minimizing energy consumption is crucial for portable wireless devices because they operate on a limited battery supply. In this paper, an adaptive energy consumption mechanism for the IEEE 802.16e broadband wireless access (BWA) network was proposed. A mobile subscriber station goes to sleep mode after negations with the base station and temporarily wake-up periodically for a short interval to check whether there is downlink traffic to it to decide whether it goes to awake mode or continues to be in the sleep-mode. The sleep interval is increased exponentially if there is no incoming or outgoing packet during that period. Moreover, the initial sleep interval and maximum interval is adaptive according to the traffic condition. We analytically model the sleep-mode scheme and compare the performance of our scheme with that of traditional energy saving mode by simulations. The result shows that our scheme not only reduces the power consumption dramatically, but also decreases the packet response time.

Abstract:As for energy hole issue in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), an energy-balanced dynamic hierarchical data forwarding strategy is proposed. According to the node usable energy, relative position and the energy consumption of cluster head in different area, the unequal hierarchical model is constructed. Furthermore, in order to realize energy efficiency of inter-cluster multi-hop communication, both node energy cost in the phase of inner-cluster communication and node relationship are considered for relay node selection, then the packet compression algorithm, a way to further reduce the forwarding packet, is performed during the process of multi-hop inner-cluster packet forwarding. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism can balance the network load effectively, prolong the network lifetime, and improve the performance of network packet forwarding.
Traffic-aware Power Adaptation and Base Station Sleep Control for Energy-Delay Tradeoffs in Green Cellular Networks

Abstract:Traffic-aware resource allocation and base station (BS) sleep control are key methods for energy saving in cellular networks. In this paper, first, we consider the control problem of how to adapt transmit power according to flow-level traffic variations, which leverages the tradeoff between energy consumption and delay performance. Based on different time scales of traffic variations, two power adaptation strategies are investigated: load-aware and queue-aware. The two strategies adapt transmit power according to flow arrival rate and instantaneous number of flows, respectively. Optimal solutions are given for both strategies. Since the optimal solution of the queue-aware strategy has no explicit form, tight bounds are derived as an approximation. Simulation results show that the two strategies perform closely in terms of energy consumption and average delay, while the queue-aware strategy is better in the tail distribution of delay and is more robust to system parameter variations. Secondly, for the load-aware strategy, with more practical concerns like the total BS energy consumption and BS sleep control taken into account, the relationship between energy consumption and delay is explored and energy-optimal rate can be obtained under certain conditions. Two threshold-based BS sleep strategies are investigated where the optimal threshold and rate are derived respectively.

Abstract:The explosive growth of Internet drives the development of high performance router. Applying distributed architecture, today's multi-shelf IP core router can provide flexible switch capacity from 1Tbps to 100Tbps. However, the more capacities it has, the more power it consumes, which is becoming a key barrier for bandwidth scaling. This paper studies the energy awareness in design of multi-shelf IP over WDM networks. we analyze the power consumption of different components in multi-shelf IP over WDM networks, including multi-shelf IP core router, ROADM and WDM line system, to deduce the power estimation model. Then, targeting at power minimization, a 2-step MILP design model is proposed, which provides sufficient design details for implementation. Simulation results indicate that, our design approach can minimize the number of both line-cards and router chassis, so performs far better than traditional hop by hop approach in energy saving.
