Abstract:In this paper we solve one-dimensional trapped SU( 2) bosons with repulsive δ-function interaction by means of the Bethe-ansatz method. The features of ground state and low-lying excited states are studied by numerical and analytic methods. We show that the ground state is an isospin ‘ferromagnetic’ state which differs from spin- 1 fermion systems. There exist three quasi-particles in the excitation spectra, and both holon–antiholon and holon–isospinon excitations are gapless for large systems. The equilibrium thermodynamics of the system at finite temperature is studied using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. The thermodynamic quantities, such as specific heat, etc, are obtained for the case of the strong coupling limit.

Abstract:The quantum-mechanical problem of bosons, in a square well in one dimension and interacting with a \ensuremath{\delta} function, is analyzed and solved. The resulting Bethe-ansatz wave function is a sum, over the Weyl group of Lie algebra ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{N}}$, of nondiffractive waves. The secular equation of the spectrum is obtained and its thermodynamic limit is discussed.

It is shown that there exists exact wave function of Bethe-ansatz form in the case that a single particle tunnels outside of the well. Two-dimensional bosonic droplets in a harmonic trap

Abstract:We investigate a system of bosons in a two-dimensional harmonic trap. In the limit of strong attractive interactions, the bosons make a droplet insensitive to external confinement. For weak interactions, in contrast, the ground state is given by the harmonic trap. In this work, we conduct a variational study of the transition between these two limits. We find that this transition occurs abruptly at the critical interaction strength whose value is universal if scaled appropriately with the number of particles. To connect the abrupt change in the properties of the system to the classical description of phase transitions, we analyze the static response of the Bose gas related to the isothermal compressibility. Finally, we perform numerically exact calculations for a few particles to demonstrate the effects of finite range interactions on this transition. We conclude that finite range effects wash out the point of transition.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve one-dimensional SU(3) bosons with repulsive delta-function interaction using the Bethe ansatz method. The features of the ground and low-lying excited states are studied by both numerical and analytical methods. We show that the ground state is a SU(3) colour ferromagnetic state. The configurations of quantum numbers for the ground state are given explicitly. For a finite N system, the spectra of low-lying excitations and the dispersion relations of four possible elementary particles (holon, antiholon, sigma-coloron and omega-coloron) are obtained by solving the Bethe ansatz equation numerically. The thermodynamic equilibrium of the system at finite temperature is studied by using the strategy of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz; we give a revised Gaudin-Takahashi equation which is useful for the numerical method. Thermodynamic quantities, such as specific heat, are obtained for some special cases. We find that the magnetic property of the model in the high-temperature regime is dominated by Curie's law, chi proportional to 1/T, and the system has Fermi-liquid-like specific heat in the strong coupling limit at low temperature.

Abstract:We study properties of the ground state of a bosonic gas of atoms in a tight trap. The atoms interact via model molecular potentials that may have either positive or negative scattering lengths. We discuss the possibility of Bose-Einstein condensation in such a system. We show that when the size of the trap becomes comparable to the correlation length of the condensate, stable Bose-Einstein condensation might occur independent of the sign of the scattering length.

Abstract:The ground state and its structure for a rotating, harmonically trapped N-Boson system with a weak repulsive contact interaction are studied as the angular momentum L increases up to 3N. We show that the ground state is generally a fragmented condensate due to angular momentum conservation. In response to an (arbitrarily weak) asymmetric perturbation of the trap, however, the fragmented ground state can be transformed into a single condensate state. We manifest this intrinsic instability by calculating the conditional probability distributions, which show patterns analogous to the boson density distributions predicted by mean-field theory.

Abstract:The ground-state energy of a mixture of spin-\textonehalf{} fermions and bosons in one dimension, interacting with a repulsive $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function potential, is analyzed. The wave function is given by repeated use of a generalized Bethe hypothesis. The "momenta" in the hypothesis are determined by coupled Fredholm integral equations. Numerical solutions are given. No phase separation is found.

Abstract:An elongated trap potential for cold atoms is designed based on a quadrupole-Ioffe configuration. Phase fluctuations in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), which is confined by the trap, are studied. We simulate the atom density distribution induced by fluctuation after time of flight from this elongated trap potential and study the temperature measurement method related to the distribution. Furthermore, taking advantage of the tight confinement and radio frequency dressing technique, we propose a double well potential for splitting BECs. Our results are helpful for improving understanding of low-dimensional quantum gases and provide important guidance for atomic interferometry.

Abstract:We investigate degenerate quantum gases in one dimension trapped in a harmonic potential that is split in the centre by a pointlike potential. Since the single particle eigenfunctions of such a system are known for all strengths of the central potential, the dynamics for non-interacting fermionic gases and low-density, strongly interacting bosonic gases can be investigated exactly using the Fermi-Bose mapping theorem. We calculate the exact many-particle ground-state wave-functions for both particle species, investigate soliton-like solutions, and compare the bosonic system to the well-known physics of Bose gases described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We also address the experimentally important questions of creation and detection of such states.

Abstract:We consider a harmonically trapped few-Boson system under rotation and investigate the ground state properties beyond the usual “lowest Landau level” approximation by using exact diagonalizations in a restricted Hilbert subspace. We find that both the effective interaction energy and density distribution are strongly affected by the two-body interaction strength.
