Abstract:The quantum-mechanical problem of $N$ fermions with $\delta$-function interaction in a one-dimensional potential well of finite depth is solved. It is shown that there exists exact wave function of Bethe-ansatz form in the case that a single particle tunnels outside of the well. Abstract:In this paper we solve one-dimensional trapped SU( 2) bosons with repulsive δ-function interaction by means of the Bethe-ansatz method. The features of ground state and low-lying excited states are studied by numerical and analytic methods. We show that the ground state is an isospin ‘ferromagnetic’ state which differs from spin- 1 fermion systems. There exist three quasi-particles in the excitation spectra, and both holon–antiholon and holon–isospinon excitations are gapless for large systems. The equilibrium thermodynamics of the system at finite temperature is studied using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. The thermodynamic quantities, such as specific heat, etc, are obtained for the case of the strong coupling limit.
An Explicit Wavefunction of the Interacting Non-Hermitian Spin-1/2 1D System

Abstract:We present an explicit Bethe-ansatz wavefunction to a 1D spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ interacting fermion system, manifesting a many-body resonance resulting from the interplay between interaction and non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupling. In the dilute limit, the wavefunction is greatly simplified and then factorized into Slater determinants and a Jastrow factor. An effective thermodynamic distribution is constructed with an effective Hamiltonian including a repulsion resulting from Pauli's exclusion principle and a distinctive zigzag potential arising from the resonance. The competition between these effects leads to a transition from a uniformly distributed configuration to a phase separation. The connection to the recent cold atom experimental efforts of realizing on-site atom-loss is discussed.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present an experimental study of the collective dipole oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. The dynamics of the center-of-mass dipole oscillation is studied in a broad parameter region as a function of spin-orbit coupling parameters as well as the oscillation amplitude. The anharmonic properties beyond the effective-mass approximation are revealed, such as the amplitude-dependent frequency and finite oscillation frequency at a place with a divergent effective mass. These anharmonic behaviors agree quantitatively with variational wave-function calculations. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrate a unique feature of the spin-orbit coupled system predicted by a sum-rule approach, stating that spin polarization susceptibility-a static physical quantity-can be measured via the dynamics of dipole oscillation. The divergence of polarization susceptibility is observed at the quantum phase transition that separates the magnetic nonzero-momentum condensate from the nonmagnetic zero-momentum phase. The good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results provides a benchmark for recently developed theoretical approaches.

Abstract:We study the spin distribution and macroscopic entanglement in spinor condensates confined in an anisotropic potential under external magnetic fields. Different types of magnetic phases can be reached by tuning the magnetic dipolar interaction strength by modifying the trapping geometry. We investigate the atom-number fluctuations of the ground state and show that the different internal hyperfine states exhibit super-Poissonian, Poissonian, and sub-Poissonian distributions with different trapping geometries and strengths of the external magnetic field. We also propose a scheme to create a macroscopic maximally entangled spin state by slowly sweeping the external magnetic field.

Abstract:Motivated by recent experimental breakthroughs in generating spin-orbit coupling in ultracold Fermi gases using Raman laser beams, we present a systematic study of spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trap in the presence of an in-plane Zeeman field (which can be realized using a finite two-photon Raman detuning). We find that a topological Fulde-Ferrell state will emerge, featuring finite-momentum Cooper pairing and zero-energy Majorana excitations localized near the edge of the trap based on the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Genes (BdG) equations. We find analytically the wavefunctions of the Majorana modes. Finally using the time-dependent BdG we show how the finite-momentum pairing field manifests itself in the expansion dynamics of the atomic cloud.

Abstract:Dynamics for localized spin-wave packets (localized magnons) are studied in a two-component ultra-cold atom system trapped in one-dimensional optical lattices. The centre of the Gaussian wave packet produced in a ferromagnetic chain shows Bloch oscillations under an additional transverse gradient magnetic field, which can be applied to measure the many-body superexchange interaction between the nearest-neighbour atoms.

Abstract:We conduct a theoretical study of SU(N) fermions confined by a one-dimensional harmonic potential. Firstly, we introduce a new numerical approach for solving the trapped interacting few-body problem, by which one may obtain accurate energy spectra across the full range of interaction strengths. In the strong-coupling limit, we map the SU(N) Hamiltonian to a spin-chain model. We then show that an existing, extremely accurate ansatz - derived for a Heisenberg SU(2) spin chain - is extendable to these N-component systems. Lastly, we consider balanced SU(N) Fermi gases that have an equal number of particles in each spin state for N=2, 3, 4. In the weak- and strong-coupling regimes, we find that the ground-state energies rapidly converge to their expected values in the thermodynamic limit with increasing atom number. This suggests that the many-body energetics of N-component fermions may be accurately inferred from the corresponding few-body systems of N distinguishable particles.

Abstract:We investigate quantum entanglement between two (spin-1/2) fermions inside a cylindrical harmonic trap, making use of the von Neumann entropy for the reduced single particle density matrix as the pure state entanglement measure. We explore the dependence of pair entanglement on the geometry and strength of the trap and on the strength of the pairing interaction over the complete range of the effective BCS to BEC crossover. Our result elucidates an interesting connection between our model system of two fermions and that of two interacting bosons.

Abstract:We study the properties of spin-orbit coupled and harmonically trapped quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas with tunable s-wave interaction between the two spin species. We adapt an effective two-channel model which takes the excited states occupation in the strongly confined axial direction into consideration by introducing dressed molecules in the closed channel, and use a Bogoliubovde Gennes (BdG) formalism to go beyond local density approximation. We find that both the in-trap phase structure and density distribution can be significantly modified near a wide Feshbach resonance compared with the single-channel model without the dressed molecules. Our findings will be helpful for the experimental search for the topological superfluid phase in ultracold Fermi gases.

Abstract:We study the semiclassical dynamics of a spinor condensate with the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction included. The time evolution of the population imbalance and the relative phase among different spin components depends greatly on the relative strength of interactions as well as on the initial conditions. The interplay of spin exchange and dipole-dipole interaction makes it possible to manipulate the atomic population on different components, leading to the phenomena of spontaneous magnetization and Macroscopic Quantum Self Trapping. Simple estimate demonstrates that these effects are accessible and controllable by modifying the geometry of the trapping potential.

Abstract:We consider a trapped atomic system in the presence of spatially varying laser fields. The laser-atom interaction generates a pseudospin degree of freedom (referred to simply as spin) and leads to an effective spin-orbit coupling for the fermions in the trap. Reflections of the fermions from the trap boundaries provide a physical mechanism for effective momentum relaxation and non-trivial spin dynamics due to the emergent spin-orbit coupling. We explicitly consider evolution of an initially spin-polarized Fermi gas in a two-dimensional harmonic trap and derive non-equilibrium behavior of the spin polarization. It shows periodic echoes with a frequency equal to the harmonic trapping frequency. Perturbations, such as an asymmetry of the trap, lead to the suppression of the spin echo amplitudes. We discuss a possible experimental setup to observe spin dynamics and provide numerical estimates of relevant parameters.

Abstract:At low temperature, collective excitations of one-dimensional (1D) interacting fermions exhibit spin-charge separation, a unique feature predicted by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) theory, but a rigorous understanding remains challenging. Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) formalism, we analytically derive universal properties of a 1D repulsive spin-1/2 Fermi gas with arbitrary interaction strength. We show how spin-charge separation emerges from the exact TBA formalism, and how it is disrupted by the interplay between the two degrees of freedom that brings us beyond the TLL paradigm. Based on the exact low-lying excitation spectra, we further evaluate the spin and charge dynamical structure factors (DSFs). The peaks of the DSFs exhibit distinguishable propagating velocities of spin and charge as functions of interaction strength, which can be observed by Bragg spectroscopy with ultracold atoms.
