Abstract:The Cahn-Hilliard equation is a fundamental model that describes phase separation processes of binary mixtures. In recent years, various dynamic boundary conditions have been proposed in order to account for possible short-range interactions of the material with the solid wall. We propose a new class of dynamic boundary conditions for the Cahn-Hilliard equation in a rather general setting. The derivation is based on an energetic variational approach that combines the least action principle and Onsageru0027s principle of maximum energy dissipation. One feature of our model is that it naturally fulfills important physical constraints such as conservation of mass, dissipation of energy and force balance relations. Then we investigate the resulting system of partial differential equations. Under suitable assumptions, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global weak/strong solutions to the initial boundary problem with or without surface diffusion. Furthermore, we establish the uniqueness of asymptotic limit as $tto+infty$ and characterize the stability of local energy minimizers for the system.

Abstract:We consider a non-isothermal modified Cahn--Hilliard equation which was previously analyzed by M. Grasselli et al. Such an equation is characterized by an inertial term and a viscous term and it is coupled with a hyperbolic heat equation. The resulting system was studied in the case of no-flux boundary conditions. Here we analyze the case in which the order parameter is subject to a dynamic boundary condition. This assumption requires a more refined strategy to extend the previous results to the present case. More precisely, we first prove the well-posedness for solutions with bounded energy as well as for weak solutions. Then we establish the existence of a global attractor. Finally, we prove the convergence of any given weak solution to a single equilibrium by using a suitable Lojasiewicz--Simon inequality.

Abstract:The motion of two contiguous incompressible and viscous fluids is described within the diffuse interface theory by the so-called Model H. The system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations, which are coupled with the Cahn-Hilliard equation associated to the Ginzburg-Landau free energy with physically relevant logarithmic potential. This model is studied in bounded smooth domain in R^d, d=2 and d=3, and is supplemented with a no-slip condition for the velocity, homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for the order parameter and the chemical potential, and suitable initial conditions. We study uniqueness and regularity of weak and strong solutions. In a two-dimensional domain, we show the uniqueness of weak solutions and the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions originating from an initial velocity u_0 in V, namely u_0 in H_0^1 such that div u_0=0. In addition, we prove further regularity properties and the validity of the instantaneous separation property. In a three-dimensional domain, we show the existence and uniqueness of local strong solutions with initial velocity u_0 in V.

Nonnegative Weak Solution to the Degenerate Viscous Cahn-Hilliard Equation

Abstract:The Cahn-Hilliard equation is a widely used model for describing phase separation processes in a binary mixture. In this paper, we investigate the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation with a degenerate, phase-dependent mobility. We define the concept of a weak solution and establish the existence of such a solution by taking limits of solutions to the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation with positive mobility. Additionally, assuming that the initial data is positive, we demonstrate that the weak solution remains nonnegative and is not identically zero. Finally, we prove that the weak solution satisfies an energy dissipation inequality.

Abstract:We consider a general class of bulk-surface convective Cahn--Hilliard systems with dynamic boundary conditions. In contrast to classical Neumann boundary conditions, the dynamic boundary conditions of Cahn--Hilliard type allow for dynamic changes of the contact angle between the diffuse interface and the boundary, a convection-induced motion of the contact line as well as absorption of material by the boundary. The coupling conditions for bulk and surface quantities involve parameters $K,L\in[0,\infty]$, whose choice declares whether these conditions are of Dirichlet, Robin or Neumann type. We first prove the existence of a weak solution to our model in the case $K,L\in (0,\infty)$ by means of a Faedo--Galerkin approach. For all other cases, the existence of a weak solution is then shown by means of the asymptotic limits, where $K$ and $L$ are sent to zero or to infinity, respectively. Eventually, we establish higher regularity for the phase-fields, and we prove the uniqueness of weak solutions given that the mobility functions are constant.

Abstract:A nonlinear evolutionary partial differential equation is considered that is obtained as a natural (from the physical point of view) generalization of the well-known Cahn–Hilliard equation. The generalized version is supplemented with terms responsible for convection and dissipation. The new version of the equation is considered together with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. For such a boundary value problem, local bifurcations of codimensions one and two are studied. In both cases, the existence, stability, and asymptotic representation of spatially inhomogeneous equilibrium states, as well as invariant manifolds formed by such solutions of the boundary value problem, are analyzed. To substantiate the results, methods of the modern theory of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems are used, including the method of integral manifolds and the apparatus of the Poincaré theory of normal forms. Differences between the results of the analysis of bifurcations in the Neumann boundary value problem and the conclusions of the analysis of the periodic boundary value problem studied by the authors of this paper in previous publications are indicated.

Abstract:We study the long-time behavior, within the framework of infinite dimensional dynamical systems, of the Cahn–Hilliard equation endowed with a new class of dynamic boundary conditions. The system under investigation was recently derived by Liu–Wu (Arch Ration Mech Anal 233:167–247, 2019) via an energetic variational approach such that it naturally fulfills physical properties like mass conservation, energy dissipation and force balance. For the system with regular potentials, we prove the existence of exponential attractors, which also yields the existence of a global attractor with finite fractal dimension. For the system with singular potentials, we obtain the existence of a global attractor in a suitable complete metric space.

Abstract:We consider the Cahn-Hilliard equation in one space dimension with scaling a small parameter \epsilon and a non-convex potential W. In the limit \espilon \to 0, under the assumption that the initial data are energetically well-prepared, we show the convergence to a Stefan problem. The proof is based on variational methods and exploits the gradient flow structure of the Cahn-Hilliard equation.

Abstract:We consider the hyperbolic relaxation of the viscous Cahn–Hilliard equation with a symport term. This equation is characterized by the presence of the additional inertial term τDφtt that accounts for the relaxation of the diffusion flux. We suppose that τD is dominated by the viscosity coefficient δ . Endowing the equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, we show that it generates a dissipative dynamical system acting on a certain phase‐space, depending on τD . This system is shown to possess a global attractor that is upper semicontinuous at τD=δ=0 . Then, we construct a family of exponential attractors IτD,δ which is a robust perturbation of an exponential attractor of the Cahn–Hilliard equation; namely, the symmetric Hausdorff distance between IτD,δ and I0,0 tends to 0 as (τD,δ) tends to (0,0) in an explicitly controlled way. Finally, we present numerical simulations of the time evolution of weak solutions as a function of parameters.

On the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with nonlocal dynamic boundary condition and singular potential: well-posedness, regularity and asymptotic limits

Abstract:We consider a class of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations in a bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$ $(d\in\{2,3\})$, subject to a nonlocal kinetic rate dependent dynamic boundary condition. This diffuse interface model describes phase separation processes with possible long-range interactions both within the bulk material and on its boundary. The kinetic rate $1/L$, with $L\in[0,+\infty]$, distinguishes different types of bulk-boundary interactions. For the initial boundary value problem endowed with general singular potentials, including the physically relevant logarithmic potential, we first establish the existence and uniqueness of global weak solutions when the bulk and boundary chemical potentials are coupled through a Robin-type boundary condition, i.e., $L\in(0,+\infty)$. The proof of existence is based on a Yosida approximation of singular potentials and a suitable Faedo-Galerkin scheme. Subsequently, we investigate asymptotic limits as the kinetic rate approaches zero or infinity, which yield weak well-posedness for the limiting cases $L=+\infty$ and $L=0$, respectively. Under appropriate assumptions on the interaction kernels, we derive explicit convergence rates for the Yosida approximation as $\varepsilon\to0$ and for the asymptotic limits as $L\to0$ or $L\to+\infty$. Finally, we demonstrate that every global weak solution exhibits a propagation of regularity over time and establish the instantaneous strict separation property.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a hyperbolic relaxation of the viscous Cahn--Hilliard system with zero Neumann boundary conditions. In fact, we consider a relaxation term involving the second time derivative of the chemical potential in the first equation of the system. We develop a well-posedness, continuous dependence and regularity theory for the initial-boundary value problem. Moreover, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the system as the relaxation parameter tends to 0 and prove the convergence to the viscous Cahn--Hilliard system.

Abstract:We consider a class of Cahn-Hilliard equation that models phase separation process of binary mixtures involving nontrivial boundary interactions in a bounded domain with non-permeable wall. The system is characterized by certain dynamic type boundary conditions and the total mass, in the bulk and on the boundary, is conserved for all time. For the case with physically relevant singular (e.g., logarithmic) potential, global regularity of weak solutions is established. In particular, when the spatial dimension is two, we show the instantaneous strict separation property such that for arbitrary positive time any weak solution stays away from the pure phases +/- 1, while in the three dimensional case, an eventual separation property for large time is obtained. As a consequence, we prove that every global weak solution converges to a single equilibrium as t -> infinity, by the usage of an extended Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with well-posedness of the Cahn-Hilliard equation subject to a class of new dynamic boundary conditions. The system was recently derived in Liu-Wu (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal.233(2019), 167-247) via an energetic variational approach and it naturally fulfils three physical constraints such as mass conservation, energy dissipation and force balance. The target problem examined in this paper can be viewed as a transmission problem that consists of Cahn-Hilliard type equations both in the bulk and on the boundary. In our approach, we are able to deal with a general class of potentials with double-well structure, including the physically relevant logarithmic potential and the non-smooth double-obstacle potential. Existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of global weak solutions are established. The proof is based on a novel time-discretization scheme for the approximation of the continuous problem. Besides, a regularity result is shown with the aim of obtaining a strong solution to the system.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the well-posedness and large time behavior of Cauchy problem for Cahn–Hilliard equation in ℝ^n ( n∈ℤ^+, n≥ 3 ). First, based on the higher-order norm estimates of solutions and the mollifier technique, we obtain the local well-posedness of strong solutions. Then, by using pure energy method, standard continuity argument together with negative Sobolev norm estimates, one proves the global well-posedness and time decay estimates provided that the H^[ n/2] +1 -norm of initial data is sufficiently small.

Abstract:We consider a relaxation of the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation induced by the second-order inertial term~$u_{tt}$. The equation also contains a semilinear term $f(u)$ of "singular" type. Namely, the function $f$ is defined only on a bounded interval of ${\mathbb R}$ corresponding to the physically admissible values of the unknown $u$, and diverges as $u$ approaches the extrema of that interval. In view of its interaction with the inertial term $u_{tt}$, the term $f(u)$ is difficult to be treated mathematically. Based on an approach originally devised for the strongly damped wave equation, we propose a suitable concept of weak solution based on duality methods and prove an existence result.

Abstract:A diffuse-interface model that describes the dynamics of nonhomogeneous incompressible two-phase viscous flows is investigated in a bounded smooth domain in ${\mathbb R}^3.$ The dynamics of the state variables is described by the nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard system. We first give a blow-up criterion of local strong solution to the initial-boundary-value problem for the case of initial density away from zero. After establishing some key a priori with the help of the Landau Potential, we obtain the global existence and decay-in-time of strong solution, provided that the initial date $\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^{2}(\Omega)}+\|\nabla \mu_0\|_{L^{2}(\Omega)}+\rho_0$ is suitably small.

Abstract:We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution to a Cahn-Hilliard/ Allen-Cahn equation in dimension 1 to 3 subject to a multiplicative stochastic perturbation driven by space time white noise. This models absorption/desorption mechanisms in surface interface or on cluster interface morphology. Some regularity properties of the solution will also be described. This a joint work with D.
