Abstract:Following the introduction of economic reform, China has experienced a rapid development over last three decades. This has exerted a huge demand on energy. The electric power industry has continued to grow rapidly to meet this demand. This has been done through the expansion of transmission and distribution networks, in phase with the rapid development of installed generating capacity. The construction of extra high voltage (EHV) and high voltage (HV) transmission facilities has increased rapidly in recent years. Intensive research programs have been set up to overcome various problems. Insulation systems have to be improved and new materials have to be developed to meet challenges. This paper intends to introduce the recent progress of solid dielectrics research in China. A variety of topics are covered and special attention is paid on the following contents: space charge measurement and its application, multi-stress aging of dielectrics, varistor ceramics, capacitor ceramics, nanometer composite dielectrics, optical fiber and bio-dielectrics.

Abstract:Nanometric dielectrics have always been a focus of engineering dielectrics. Researchers have deepened the understanding of nanometric dielectrics through multi-angle studies. In this paper, we put forward some ideas about engineering dielectrics researches. It is proposed that the name nanodielectric composites should be more precise according to low dimensional physics. For space charge limited current (SCLC), it is considered that SCLC is not solely determined by carriers which are the same as injected carriers in the transition from ohmic region to high field region. In view of pulse related space charge measurement methods, especially pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method has been mainly adopted, its advantages and disadvantages are described. At last, experimental results of trap-related breakdown and flashover phenomenon, functionalized groups related interfacial compatibility, and classified effects of nanofillers on short-term breakdown and long-term failure are presented to inspire further discussion.

Abstract:With great progress of space charge measurement technologies in the last three decades, lots of researches are focused on space charge in solid dielectrics. The space charge measurement technology for solid dielectrics has developed from destructive ways to non-destructive ways. Pressure wave propagation method and pulsed electro-acoustic method are two kinds of most popular methods nowadays. Theories and features of these two methods are compared and analyzed. Development of space charge measurement technologies in China is introduced. Based on above reviews, the influences of space charge effects on electrical properties are reviewed by prestressing effects, morphology effects, space charge phenomena and space charge dynamics, etc. Studies of some features of solid dielectrics by using space charge, such as trap depth, are discussed. The important role of space charge in developments and evaluations is emphasized. It’s also emphasized that different space charge characteristics are needed for applications in different areas. Progresss of space charge measurement technology provide new powerful ways for researches on solid dielectrics. However, more detail work should be carried out to improve dielectric theories and industrial applications of space charges.

Abstract:Abstract Dielectric ceramic capacitors, with the advantages of high power density, fast charge-discharge capability, excellent fatigue endurance, and good high temperature stability, have been acknowledged to be promising candidates for solid-state pulse power systems. This review investigates the energy storage performances of linear dielectric, relaxor ferroelectric, and antiferroelectric from the viewpoint of chemical modification, macro/microstructural design, and electrical property optimization. Research progress of ceramic bulks and films for Pb-based and/or Pb-free systems is summarized. Finally, we propose the perspectives on the development of energy storage ceramics for pulse power capacitors in the future.

Abstract:Dielectric capacitors for electrostatic energy storage are fundamental to advanced electronics and high-power electrical systems due to remarkable characteristics of ultrafast charging-discharging rates and ultrahigh power densities. High-end dielectric capacitors with excellent energy storage performance are urgently desirable to satisfy ever growing demands for miniaturization and integration of electronic and electrical systems. Herein, we present a panoramic review to the recent progress of ceramic-based dielectrics in the forms of solid solutions, composites, films and multilayer ceramic capacitors. This paper summarizes the fundamentals of dielectric ceramics, including ultimate principles, primary parameters, key influence factors, typical ferroic material systems, and referrible structure, where the strategic emphases are focused on the structure–property relation on the multiscale. Finally, this review elaborates the challenges for current dielectrics and opportunities for future dielectrics.

Abstract:In order to better promote the research and development of high energy storage density and high efficiency lead-free ceramic dielectric capacitors, a comprehensive introduction to the energy storage principle and classification of ceramic dielectric energy storage materials was presented, the research progress, main research systems and performance advantages and disadvantages of linear dielectric, ferroelectric, relaxed ferroelectric and antiferroelectric energy storage materials in recent years were comparatively analyzed. The current challenges faced by ceramic energy storage materials and strategies to improve their energy storage were summarized. The current challenges of ceramic energy storage materials and the strategies to improve their energy storage performance were summarized, and their future development and applications were also presented.

Abstract:Dielectric capacitors with the prominent features of ultrafast charging-discharging rates and ultrahigh power densities are ubiquitous components in modern electronics. To meet the growing demand for electronics miniaturization, dielectric capacitors with high energy storage properties are extensively researched. Here we present an overview of the recent progress in the engineering of multiscale structures of dielectric ceramics ranging from bulk to thin films. This article commences with a brief introduction of the fundamentals of dielectric ceramics, including primary parameters, a library of dielectric ceramics, and multiscale structures. Emphases are placed on the relationship between multiscale structures and energy storage properties and the rational structure design principles in dielectric ceramics. Also included are currently available multilayer ceramic capacitors based on multiscale engineered ceramic structures. Finally, challenges along with opportunities for further research and development of high-performance dielectric ceramics for electrostatic energy storage are highlighted.

Abstract:Dielectric materials featured with polarization at an applied electric field have been demonstrated with a wide range of applications such as energy storage and conversion, thus triggering tremendous efforts in scientific and industrial research. To date, numerous strategies have been explored to improve the performance of dielectric materials; especially, the recently reported high-entropy design enabling flexible composition configuration and tunable functional properties has attracted increasing attention. In this contribution, we review the very recent investigations and applications of high-entropy design for dielectric materials, including dielectric energy storage, electrocalorics, piezoelectrics, and ferroelectrics, and address the challenges and remaining concerns. Finally, we suggest future research directions for the preparation and in-depth structure characterization of high-entropy dielectric materials. This review will provide a holistic view of the most state-of-the-art high-entropy dielectric materials and envision prospects of high-entropy design for dielectrics.

Abstract:Flexible polymer-matrix nanodielectrics have recently been attracting more attention in the fields of frontier research internationally since the beginning of the 21st century. It would accelerate a technical reformation for the applications in new energies, bioscience and biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, electronic skin, wearable electronic clothing, Internet of things, and electrical insulation. This review summarises the recent development and achievements of nanodielectrics, including space charge suppression, high energy density storage, partial discharge resistance, non-linear field grading properties, high thermal conductivity, and future applications in biomedical area. Special attention is given to two representative interface models that are the Lewis's diffusion electrical double-layer model and Tanaka's multi-core model. At last, some issues related to the technology of nanodielectrics have also been discussed.

Abstract:Materials exhibiting high energy/power density are currently needed to meet the growing demand of portable electronics, electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage devices. The highest energy densities are achieved for fuel cells, batteries, and supercapacitors, but conventional dielectric capacitors are receiving increased attention for pulsed power applications due to their high power density and their fast charge-discharge speed. The key to high energy density in dielectric capacitors is a large maximum but small remanent (zero in the case of linear dielectrics) polarization and a high electric breakdown strength. Polymer dielectric capacitors offer high power/energy density for applications at room temperature, but above 100 °C they are unreliable and suffer from dielectric breakdown. For high-temperature applications, therefore, dielectric ceramics are the only feasible alternative. Lead-based ceramics such as La-doped lead zirconate titanate exhibit good energy storage properties, but their toxicity raises concern over their use in consumer applications, where capacitors are exclusively lead free. Lead-free compositions with superior power density are thus required. In this paper, we introduce the fundamental principles of energy storage in dielectrics. We discuss key factors to improve energy storage properties such as the control of local structure, phase assemblage, dielectric layer thickness, microstructure, conductivity, and electrical homogeneity through the choice of base systems, dopants, and alloying additions, followed by a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art. Finally, we comment on the future requirements for new materials in high power/energy density capacitor applications.

Abstract:Space charges occur during electrification operations and threaten the service life of power equipment and microelectronics. The current developments and understanding of space charge behavior in epoxy‐based dielectrics are reviewed from macroscopic to microscopic perspectives. The underlying mechanisms in inhibiting space charge suppression are discussed. The key challenges and research opportunities in this interdisciplinary field are highlighted. Epoxy‐based dielectrics are extensively used in grid‐connected energy systems and modern microelectronics as electrical insulation, adhesive, and packaging components. However, space charge accumulation in epoxy‐based dielectrics is a foremost factor threatening device stability and lifespan, especially under conditions of high voltage direct current and high temperatures during long‐term operation, and thus are investigated systematically. This article reviews the state‐of‐the‐art progress in understanding and regulating the space charge behavior of epoxy‐based dielectric materials. The development of space charge measurement techniques is first introduced. Then, experimental observations of macroscopic space charge characteristics in epoxy dielectrics under different conditions, along with the advancement of nanofiller‐doping strategies for improving space charge suppression capabilities, are discussed and emphasized. Afterward, simulation progress based on the bipolar charge transport models and quantum chemistry calculations are summarized to provide some insight from a microscopic perspective. It is concluded by providing a brief summary and highlighting future research opportunities in inhibiting space charge accumulation of epoxy‐based dielectrics for practical applications in power equipment and electronic devices.

Abstract:Compared to polymers and their nanocomposites, dielectric ceramics are considered as promising candidates for the pulsed-power devices because of their excellent temperature stability and good anti-fatigue characteristic. Nevertheless, relatively low energy storage density is the main disadvantage for dielectric ceramics, which does not meet the requirement of miniaturization for pulsed-power devices. Therefore, how to improve the energy storage density of dielectric ceramics has become one of hot topics on the research of functional ceramics in recent years. In this paper, the basic principle of the capacitor for electric energy storage was introduced firstly and then the research advances of BaTiO3-based, BiFeO3-based, (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3-based lead-free relaxor ceramics and (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-based, and AgNbO3-based lead-free anti-ferroelectric ceramics were reviewed based on our group's research, in which the composition design strategies of different material systems were especially summarized. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of lead-free nonlinear energy-storage ceramics were analyzed, and the coping strategies as well as the future development direction were also proposed.

Abstract:Owing to the feature of ultrahigh power density, the dielectric capacitors play an increasingly important role in the field of industrial production, basic scientific research, aerospace, and military industry in recent years. However, the relatively low energy storage density of the dielectric capacitors generally leads to their big sizes, which is difficult to meet the miniaturization requirements of future devices. Polymer-ceramic nanocomposites can combine high permittivity of the ceramic fillers and the excellent breakdown strength of the polymer matrix, thus achieving excellent energy storage performance. At present, developing the polymer-ceramic nanocomposites with high energy storage density is the key to realize the miniaturization goal of dielectric capacitors in the future. The current research progress of polymer-ceramic nanocomposites for energy storage capacitor applications from three perspectives was systematically summarized, including regulation of the nanofillers, optimization of the interfaces, and design of the multilayer composite structure. Notably, the influences of the dimension, size, species, hierarchical structure of the nanofillers, interface optimization methods such as surface modification and core-shell structure construction, as well as multilayer structure design such as sandwich structure and gradient structure on the permittivity, breakdown strength and the energy storage density of the nanocomposites were introduced in detail. Meanwhile, the structure-activity relationships between the microstructure of nanocomposites and their energy storage properties were further analyzed and discussed. Finally, based on the challenges and shortcomings of the current research, the important development directions of this field in the future were proposed, including selecting the new 2D nanofillers, enhancing the energy storage efficiency, employing multimode combined optimization strategy, and constructing the corresponding dielectric capacitors.
