Abstract:In this note, a nonlinear model of a single electromagnet with two control inputs used in a maglev system is developed. A nonlinear feedback controller is then designed using feedback linearization. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated by simulations.

Abstract:The single DOF (degree of freedom) linear maglev (magnetic levitation) system is the basis of studying on the maglev guideway. Generally, the electromagnet is selected to provide the electromagnetic force, however, this force is highly nonlinear. This paper presents a linear model of the single DOF linear maglev system, and establishes the corresponding experimental platform. In order to improve the dynamic response and depress the current ripple, a predictive current control based on three-level technology is proposed. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method achieves excellent dynamic and static performance.
Levitation Force Control of Maglev Permanent Synchronous Planar Motor Based on Multivariable Feedback Linearization Method

Abstract:The whole control system is a strong coupling, nonlinear and multivariable system because the motion of maglev permanent magnet synchronous planar motor has multi-degrees of freedom and the magnetic field produced by the permanent magnet decreases nonlinearly in the vertical direction. The decoupling and linearization of the levitation force is the key part for high-speed and high-precision control. The paper analyzes the mathematical model and the levitation force of the motor. After that, the paper designs a nonlinear controller, which achieves the goal of decoupling and linearizing the multivariable and nonlinear system, by using multivariable feedback linearization method. The simulation result in Matlab/Simulink shows that the whole control system has high-speed response to the given reference and good robustness under disturbance.

Abstract:In an electromagnetic suspension system of a magnetic levitation vehicle, a single electromagnet with two control voltages (inputs) is the smallest electromechanical unit providing for a suspension force. In this paper, a non-linear controller using a feedback linearisation technique is developed on the basis of a non-linear model for such a suspension unit. The state feedback control law requires an observer, and a high-gain observer is proposed. The resulting observer-controller performance is illustrated using a simulation study.

Abstract:In order to realize the high speed and high-precision control of a maglev planar motor, a high-precision electromagnetic model is needed in the first place, which can also contribute to meeting the real-time running requirements. Traditionally, the electromagnetic model is based on analytical calculations. However, this neglects the model simplification and the manufacturing errors, which may bring certain errors to the model. Aiming to handle this inaccuracy, this paper proposes a novel design method for a maglev planar motor control system based on two-dimensional linear interpolation. First, the magnetic field is divided into several regions according to the symmetry of the Halbach magnetic array, and the uniform grid method is adopted to partition one of these regions. Second, targeting this region, it is possible to sample the electromagnetic forces and torques on each node of the grid and obtain the complete electromagnetic model in this region through the two-dimensional linear interpolation method. Third, the whole electromagnetic model of the maglev planar motor can be derived according to the symmetry of the magnetic field. Finally, the decoupling method and controller are designed according to this electromagnetic model, and thereafter, the control model can be established. The designed control system is demonstrated through simulations and experiments to feature better accuracy and meet the requirements of real-time control.

Abstract:Based on the fact that the magnetic levitation system is nonlinear and sensitive, a robust control strategy which is composed of the optimal Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and the sliding mode control is presented. The LQR design makes sure the system performance index is satisfied, while the sliding mode control restrains the disturbance exterior, as well as makes sure fast dynamical response. The strategy solves the conflict between system dynamical performance, robustness and static performance. The controller is easy to design and realize. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate the system has fast dynamical response and is insensitive to disturbance out of the system.

Abstract:This paper concerns the design, implementation, and nonlinear velocity-tracking control of a novel magnetic-levitation (maglev) system for magnetically levitated trains. The proposed system uses only one tubular linear induction motor to produce three forces required in a maglev system: propulsion, levitation, and guidance. Classical maglev systems, on the other hand, contain a separate force-generating system to build each of these three forces. Another benefit that the proposed system offers is that there is no need to control the guidance, and particularly, the levitation forces, one of the most challenging tasks in maglev systems. The system always centers the moving part during operation and eliminates the necessity for control of the levitation and guidance forces. However, the propulsion force strongly requires some control efforts because a linear induction motor has nonlinear system dynamics. This paper gives a condensed design guideline based on the mature theory of electromagnetic launchers, particularly the linear induction launcher type. It explains the implementation process, shows experimental test results, and finally, presents a nonlinear partial state-feedback controller for the proposed system.

Abstract:High-speed Maglev control system is highly integration automatic system combined with levitation control subsystem, traction control subsystem, and operation control subsystem, and traction control subsystem is one of key subsystem. The problem of High-speed Maglev traction control was analyzed in this paper, and the nonlinear dynamic model of the High-speed Maglev traction system was set up. The precision linear model of the High-speed Maglev traction system was given based on the feedback linearization method, and based on it the controller was designed. The simulations show the good velocity curve tracking performance and the robustness of the traction control system.

Abstract:The mathematical model of a maglev system with a single hybrid magnet is identified from the experimental data in this paper. Firstly, the model structure of the hybrid maglev system is chosen based on Newton-Second Law and Kirchoff Equation. To simplify the identification procedure, current-loop control algorithm is introduced and the proposed model structure is decomposed into two parts, which are separately the nonlinear kinetics and the linear Electrics. Secondly, the information of the practical hybrid system is acquired by a closed-loop identification experiment, and the controller design to stabilize the system and the reference signal design to persistently excite the system are both addressed in detail. Then the proposed model structure is written as two ARX equations after introducing new states, and the parameters are identified by Least-Square-Method. Finally, the applicability of the identified model is evaluated by another set of experimental data, which illustrates that the obtained model is sufficiently accurate for the purpose of controller design. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:The magnetic levitation system is a critical part to guarantee safe and reliable operations of a maglev train. In this paper, the control strategy is proposed for the magnetic levitation system based on the model predictive control incorporating two-level state feedback. Taking advantage of the measurable state variables, that is, air gap, electromagnet acceleration, and control current through high-resolution sensor measurement, the first-level nonlinear state feedback is to linearize the unstable nonlinear magnetic levitation system, and the second-level linear state feedback is to further stabilize the system and improve the dynamic performances, which together provide a stable prediction model. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control strategy can ensure high-precision air gap control and favorable disturbance resistance ability.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of maglev train passing through the track joints, this paper proposes a Lyapunov-based backstepping controller for Magnetic Levitation System. First, the theoretical model of the maglev system is, and then, the theoretical formulae of the backstepping controller is deduced; to achieve rapid current response, a current loop feedback is designed. Second, a numerical simulation is carried out, and the simulation results show that the backstepping controller is not only simpler in design, but also faster in response. Finally, the designed controller is verified by experiments in the existing maglev system. The experimental results show that compared with the traditional PID controller, the backstepping method has a smaller overshoot and a faster response speed when dealing with the problem of a maglev train passing through the track joints. Also, it is more adaptable to external disturbances.
Real-Time Adaptive Control of a Magnetic Levitation System with a Large Range of Load Disturbance

Abstract:In an idle light-load or a full-load condition, the change of the load mass of a suspension system is very significant. If the control parameters of conventional control methods remain unchanged, the suspension performance of the control system deteriorates rapidly or even loses stability when the load mass changes in a large range. In this paper, a real-time adaptive control method for a magnetic levitation system with large range of mass changes is proposed. First, the suspension control system model of the maglev train is built up, and the stability of the closed-loop system is analyzed. Then, a fast inner current-loop is used to simplify the design of the suspension control system, and an adaptive control method is put forward to ensure that the system is still in a stable state when the load mass varies in a wide range. Simulations and experiments show that when the load mass of the maglev system varies greatly, the adaptive control method is effective to suspend the system stably with a given displacement.

Abstract:The kinetic theory is used to analysis the two-stage maglev system and to optimize the control parameters. The magnetic force of differential magnet coil is considered as a mass-spring-damping second-order system,and analyzed by the software ANSYS. The equivalent stiffness and damping ratio of the system are designed according to the result of transient response and stiffness analysis. PID parameters are also designed theoretically. The maglev system works stably after repeated tests,and experiment result shows the correctness of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The Electromagnet levitation technique has been popularly used in transport and industrial felds in recent decades, such as high-speed levitation trains, frictionless magnetic bearings, and high precision control in semiconductor manufacturing (CST (1996); Kim et al. (1998)). Due to its high efficiency and good environmental orientation, the application of this technique is extensively growing. For instance, the attitude of a small-sized satellite can be efficiently controlled by using the electromagnetic force generated from the interaction between the onboard (controlled) electrical field and the earth magnetic field (Wisniewski & Stoustrup (2004)).

Nonlinear Control of Maglev Positioning Stage

Abstract:Magnetic-levitation (maglev) positioning stage is a system with complex nonlinear, strong coupling and low damping. This research focused on the control algorithm and the effect of eddy current damper applied to the system which consists of a moving table, four Halbach permanent magnetic arrays, four stators and displacement sensors. All of the magnetic arrays are fixed to the bottom of the moving table. To avoid the occurrence of oscillation while the stage is being positioned, a permanent magnet set which served as an eddy current damper was added to the system; and it is proved through theoretical analysis that the damping force generated by the eddy current damper is proportional to the movement speed of the table. A motion control mathematical model including the segment of an eddy current damper was built, and the nonlinear controller of the system was given based on the theory of differential geometry decoupling. Simulation results show that decoupling control of movement the moving parts can be realized in horizontal and vertical directions.

Abstract:A novel maglev transportation system was proposed for large travel range ultra precision motion. The system consists of a levitation subsystem and a propulsion subsystem. During the propulsion subsystem driving the moving platform along the guideway, the levitation subsystem uses six pairs of electromagnets to steadily suspend the moving platform over the guideway. The model of the levitation system, which is a typical nonlinear multi-input multi-output coupling system and has many inner nonlinear coupling characteristics, was deduced. For testifying the model, the levitation mechanism was firstly controlled by proportional-integral-differential (PID) control, and then a lot of input-output data were collected for model parameter identification. The least-square parameter identification method was used. The identification results prove that the model is feasible and suitable for the real system.

Abstract:Magnetic levitation motion stage is applicable for precision measurement and positioning equipments due to advantages of non-contact,no friction and no abrasion.To achieve precision control for the maglev motion stage system which has strong coupling and nonlinear characteristics,a feedback exact linearization control method is proposed.Noninteractive control of the motion stage levitating position and horizontal position was realized.Variable-structure controllers were designed respectively according to different characteristics of vertical and horizontal directions.Simulation results show that this method is very effective in the decoupling of levitating drive and horizontal drive.In addition,the controllers have strong robustness.

Abstract:Reliable control of high-speed maglev traction motors and power converters is a prerequisite for the stable operation of high-speed maglev trains. Due to the particularity of the high-speed maglev system, a rotor magnetic field directional control strategy with constant excitation and zero direct axis current is usually adopted to achieve independent traction suspension control. Considering the low switching frequency of the traction converter, a three-level topology is adopted. Compared to the two-level, the voltage stress per switch in the three-level topology is only half of the DC bus voltage, and the corresponding DC bus voltage is doubled. With the same switching frequency, the three-level output ripple and harmonics are much smaller. In this paper, traction control simulation models based on two-level and three-level converters are built in MATLAB/Simulink to compare the operation of maglev trains with different inverter topologies and to verify the superiority of the three-level structure.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the dynamic longitudinal edge effect of linear induction motor, a mathematical model considering the effect of edge effect on magnetization branch is established. The motor parameters are very important to improve controller performance, so the method to obtain motor parameters through finite element calculation is proposed and the parameters are queried online accurately. Then the calculation of command value considering thrust accuracy and the design of the sliding mode controller are proposed to enhance thrust accuracy and dynamic response of the system. Besides, a multi-mode modulation method is applied. A kind of synchronous modulation method based on the phase-locked loop is adopted, which reduces low-frequency harmonics and thrust ripples at high speed. Finally, the proposed control algorithm and modulation strategy are verified by experiments. The results show that the proposed control system has excellent control performance and robustness.
Control Strategy of Maglev Vehicles Based on Particle Swarm Algorithm

Abstract:Taking a single magnet levitation system as the object, a nonlinear numerical model of the vehicle–guideway coupling system was established to study the levitation control strategies. According to the similarity in dynamics, the single magnet-guideway coupling system was simplified into a magnet-suspended track system, and the corresponding hardware-in-loop test rig was set up using dSPACE. A full-state-feedback controller was developed using the levitation gap signal and the current signal, and controller parameters were optimized by particle swarm algorithm. The results from the simulation and the test rig show that, the proposed control method can keep the system stable by calculating the controller output with the full-state information of the coupling system, Step responses from the test rig show that the controller can stabilize the system within 0.15 s with a 2 % overshot, and performs well even in the condition of violent external disturbances. Unlike the linear quadratic optimal method, the particle swarm algorithm carries out the optimization with the nonlinear controlled object included, and its optimized results make the system responses much better.

Abstract:Levitation control is a core technique of magnetic levitation (Maglev) trains, whose performance has a significant impact on the driving safety and ride comfort during the operation of Maglev trains. With the rapid development of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials, a novel hybrid levitation system for Maglev trains, composed of HTS and normal conducting electromagnets, is becoming a more promising alternative to the conventional levitation system, due to a lager levitation air gap and lower energy consumption. The controller of the hybrid levitation system is hard to design due to strong nonlinearity, open-loop instability and fast-response requirements. In this study, we propose a robust model predictive control (MPC) strategy for the novel hybrid levitation system in which state constraints are taken into account, including the air gap, and the velocity and acceleration of the hybrid magnet. In the MPC strategy, the prediction model employs a stabilized model through nonlinear and linear state feedback. With regard to the online computational load, the primal-dual interior-point (PDI) algorithm is adopted to solve the optimization problem with high efficiency to deal with constraints in a real-time manner. Finally, simulation results are demonstrated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed MPC-PDI control strategy for the hybrid levitation system, and the significances considering state constraints are revealed. This study provides an engineering realization solution to the novel hybrid levitation system of a Maglev train.
