Abstract:Single-carrier (SC) and multicarrier (MC) transmissions have emerged as two competitive technologies for long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission systems. In this letter, we compare chromatic dispersion (CD) and nonlinearity tolerances for coherent optical SC frequency-domain-equalization and SC orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing systems. We establish the simulation systems employing the same structures of transmitter and receiver, the same structure of frame, and almost the same frequency-domain equalization method except the inverse fast Fourier transform processing. Both CD tolerance and nonlinear transmission performance in single-channel and wavelength-division-multiplexing scenarios are investigated. The comparison can reveal the difference of SC and MC transmissions.

Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.

Abstract:There is a worldwide impact to the TV broadcasting and consumer electronics industries starting from the decision of the FCC, of which the transition period of SDTV to digital will be completed in the year of 2006. The digital television era seems to be arriving earlier than that has ever been expected. How to face the challenge of this new era is a serious concern of the industries at present. The VSB transmission system is accepted for terrestrial broadcasting of DTV in the US. As a counterpart, the COFDM system is accepted for DVB. It is natural of interested to investigate these two transmission schemes and compare the performance and the methods of implementation. Abstract:DFT-S-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier (SC) modulation are two typical modulation formats in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. They may have respective advantages and disadvantages in different scenarios. Therefore, bit error ratio comparison results of these two modulation formats will be useful for designing and optimizing the practical RoF system. We experimentally compare these two modulation formats in a long wireless distance RoF system at W-band. It can be concluded that DFT-SOFDM and SC modulation have similar performances in a RoF system with transmission distance over 80 km fiber and 224-m wireless link. Abstract:Optical superchannel employing single-carrier (SC) and multi-carrier (MC) subband modulation techniques have been widely discussed for high-speed coherent optical transmission and networks. In this paper, we establish uniform system design based on frequency-domain equalization (FDE) and carry out a thorough study on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) superchannel versus SC frequency division multiplexing (SCFDM, also named as DFT-spread-OFDM) superchannel. The baseband signal characteristics of SCFDM and OFDM are analyzed. SCFDM and OFDM superchannel systems with 4-, 16-, 64- and 256-QAM formats and polarization division multiplexing (PDM) are numerically investigated against various impairments. The results show that SCFDM superchannel outperforms its MC counterpart against finite DAC&ADC resolution and fiber nonlinearities, while suffers more penalty when very large dispersion or laser phase noise exists. Abstract:Sampling Frequency Offset (SFO) will affect the performance of OFDM communication systems. There are currently two main types of SFO synchronization methods: Blind Estimation and Data-Aided Estimation. In this paper, we simulate and compare the two types of methods. In the end, simulation results show that Data-Aided Estimation has higher estimation accuracy and a wider range of applicability.

Cross-phase modulation effects in 40 Gbit/s WDM dispersion managed systems are showed for the first time to our knowledge. Also we discuss the robustness of these two kinds of systems by considering the flatness of WDM transmission links.

Abstract:The performances of SCDCF-based and RDF-based 40Gb/s OTDM and WDM systems are compared by means of numerical simulation. Theory and numerical results were presented and discussed with 40Gb/s signal of different duty cycles. Cross-phase modulation effects in 40Gb/s WDM systems are showed for the first time. We find that in single channel transmission small duty cycle signal shows superior performance. The problem of RDF based system is mainly due to large nonlinearity of the RDF fiber we choose to calculate. The residual dispersion remains potential problem even at very excellent slope compensation in 40Gb/s systems. RDF based system offers more robust performance than SCDCF at the same value of compensation rate due to its relative short SMF fiber in every span.

Abstract:We compare the coherent optical single carrier frequency domain equalization(CO-SCFDE) system and the coherent optical single carrier frequency division multiplexing(CO-SCFDM) system with coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(CO-OFDM) system by simulation and experiment.The results show that the single carrier systems based on frequency domain equalization not only inherit the advantages of OFDM system,but also reduce nonlinear transmission impairment.They are very promising for future long-haul optical transmission.

Abstract:A digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) system has been proposed as a possible solution for large capacity and long-distance coherent optical transmissions due to its high tolerances for chromatic dispersion (CD), equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) and fiber nonlinearity. In a DSCM receiver, for subcarrier-demultiplex to occur properly, frequency offset estimation (FOE) must be implemented before demultiplexing. It is beneficial to decrease complexity and EEPN by compensating CD on each subcarrier. Therefore, a high CD tolerance is indispensable for the FOE algorithm in a DSCM receiver. However, the mainstream blind FOE algorithms for single-carrier systems, such as the 4th power fast Fourier transform algorithm, could not work for DSCM systems. To deal with this challenge, a pilot tone-based FOE algorithm with high CD tolerance is proposed and verified using simulations and offline experiments. The final estimation accuracy of about 10 MHz of the proposed two-stage FOE is achieved at low computational complexity. Simulations and offline experiments show that DSCM systems with the proposed algorithm have a 0.5~1 dB Q-factor improvement over Nyquist single-carrier systems.

Abstract:We present a detailed comparison of applying three advanced modulation formats including pulse amplitude modulation-8 (PAM-8), carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation-64 QAM (CAP-64), and discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) with a bandwidth-limited direct-detection receiver for 100 Gb/s/λ optical transmission systems. These modulation formats are all experimentally demonstrated with corresponding digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. The comparison is carried out to evaluate the performance of each modulation format in terms of nonlinear equalization, received optical power and optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR). Our experimental results show that only 112 Gbit/s DFT-S OFDM is successfully achieved over 50 km of SSMF under the hard decision-forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10−3.

Abstract:With the rapid evolution of standards in terrestrial celluar systems, the challenges for next generation broadband mobile satellite communications are to proivde high-speed data transmissions in order to complement with terrestrial wireless communications mutually. In this paper, the performance of adopting Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDM) and Single Carrier Frequency division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) schemes in multi-beam broadband Mobile Satellite system are compared. In particular, the nonlinear effects on these two systems introduced by on-board high power amplifier are studied in the condition with and without predistorter. Then the propagation delay characteristic of multibeam geosynchronous (GEO) satellite system is analyzed, according to which two specific uplink timing synchronization methods are given. Based on the synchronization achieved by these methods, the influences of high-speed user movement in OFDM and SC-FDMA based satellite system are researched. Finally, the results of link level performance comparison are obtained in all above conditions by the means of simulation.

Abstract:We utilize new performance criteria to evaluate performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier modulation with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE), which is described as the required ratio of average transmitted energy per bit to power spectral density of noise at a certain bit error rate (BER). The criteria takes not only received BER performance into account, but the power loss caused by input power back off (IBO) that depends on the requirement of adjacent channel interference (ACI) at transmitter. Simulation results indicate that IBO for unique-word-aided SC-FDE is about 4 dB lower than that for OFDM and pilot-aided SC-FDE to keep ACI below −30dB. Under the new performance criteria, although OFDM system has poorer performance in static and slow dispersive fading channel, it has advantages over SC-FDE systems especially in fast dispersive fading channels.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally compared the performance of discrete-Fourier-transform spread (DFT-spread) and pre-equalization in a 244.2-Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexed 16-ary quadrature amplitude-modulation orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (PDM-16QAM-OFDM) transmission system. The pre-equalization is effective to overcome the high-frequency power attenuation in the channel. However, the acquisition of static channel response for pre-equalization is really complicated and the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the signal after pre-equalization even becomes a little higher. The DFT-spread can be applied to simultaneously resist high-frequency power attenuation and reduce the PAPR of OFDM signal. The experimental results also show that one band DFT-spread demonstrates the best narrow optical filtering tolerance. The transmission distance for 8 × 244.2-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) PDM-16QAM-OFDM at the soft-decision forward-error correction threshold of 2.4×10-2 is 2× 420 km based on pre-equalization, while extended to over 3×420 km based on one band DFT-spread, which well illustrates one band DFT-spread is more efficient for high-bandwidth coherent WDM-OFDM system.
