Abstract:We compare the coherent optical single carrier frequency domain equalization(CO-SCFDE) system and the coherent optical single carrier frequency division multiplexing(CO-SCFDM) system with coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(CO-OFDM) system by simulation and experiment.The results show that the single carrier systems based on frequency domain equalization not only inherit the advantages of OFDM system,but also reduce nonlinear transmission impairment.They are very promising for future long-haul optical transmission.

Abstract:Optical superchannel employing single-carrier (SC) and multi-carrier (MC) subband modulation techniques have been widely discussed for high-speed coherent optical transmission and networks. In this paper, we establish uniform system design based on frequency-domain equalization (FDE) and carry out a thorough study on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) superchannel versus SC frequency division multiplexing (SCFDM, also named as DFT-spread-OFDM) superchannel. The baseband signal characteristics of SCFDM and OFDM are analyzed. SCFDM and OFDM superchannel systems with 4-, 16-, 64- and 256-QAM formats and polarization division multiplexing (PDM) are numerically investigated against various impairments. The results show that SCFDM superchannel outperforms its MC counterpart against finite DAC&ADC resolution and fiber nonlinearities, while suffers more penalty when very large dispersion or laser phase noise exists. Abstract:Single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE), as a mature technique in wireless commutation, is widely researched for signal equalization and compensation utilizing high speed electronic devices such as DSP. In this paper, for the first time, we propose and demonstrate a SC-FDE technique in optical communication system. By adopting SC-FDE technique, after 50km, 80km, 100km transmission for a 10Gb/s ASK single sideband (SSB) signal on a single mode fiber (SMF), the dispersion of optical signa1 is effectively compensated. The SSB signal is generated by a dual-arm Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) cascading a phase modulator (PM) based on Hilbert Finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter. The results demonstrate, in our proposed SC-FDE model, the eye opening and the clock recovery is improved, and the effect of compensation is enhanced as the transmission distance increases.

Abstract:The frequency domain equalizers (FDEs) employing two types of overlap-add zero-padding (OLA-ZP) methods are applied to compensate the chromatic dispersion in a 112-Gbit/s non-return-to-zero polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (NRZ-PDM-QPSK) coherent optical transmission system. Simulation results demonstrate that the OLA-ZP methods can achieve the same acceptable performance as the overlap-save method. The required minimum overlap (or zero-padding) in the FDE is derived, and the optimum fast Fourier transform length to minimize the computational complexity is also analyzed.

Abstract:A digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) system has been proposed as a possible solution for large capacity and long-distance coherent optical transmissions due to its high tolerances for chromatic dispersion (CD), equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) and fiber nonlinearity. In a DSCM receiver, for subcarrier-demultiplex to occur properly, frequency offset estimation (FOE) must be implemented before demultiplexing. It is beneficial to decrease complexity and EEPN by compensating CD on each subcarrier. Therefore, a high CD tolerance is indispensable for the FOE algorithm in a DSCM receiver. However, the mainstream blind FOE algorithms for single-carrier systems, such as the 4th power fast Fourier transform algorithm, could not work for DSCM systems. To deal with this challenge, a pilot tone-based FOE algorithm with high CD tolerance is proposed and verified using simulations and offline experiments. The final estimation accuracy of about 10 MHz of the proposed two-stage FOE is achieved at low computational complexity. Simulations and offline experiments show that DSCM systems with the proposed algorithm have a 0.5~1 dB Q-factor improvement over Nyquist single-carrier systems.

Abstract:Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) is one well-known scheme, which has recently become a preferred choice for uplink channels. Due to the usage of single carrier, the performance of SC-FDMA systems degrades in deep frequency selective fading channels. In this paper, we propose a structure of equalizer based on frequency domain decision feedback which could be used for multi-user SC-FDMA systems. Specific parameters of the equalizer are analyzed as well. This algorithm is applicable to various carrier allocations in multi-user systems such as localized allocation, distributed allocation, and frequency-hopping (FH) allocation. To reduce the complexity, it is not necessary to derive the inversion of matrix, which is required in the traditional decision feedback equalizer for single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE-DFE). It is shown by the simulation results that perfect performance could be achieved under all kinds of situations for multi-user systems. This structure can be used in the broadcasting uplink channels with SC-FDMA scheme.

Abstract:Single-carrier (SC) and multicarrier (MC) transmissions have emerged as two competitive technologies for long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission systems. In this letter, we compare chromatic dispersion (CD) and nonlinearity tolerances for coherent optical SC frequency-domain-equalization and SC orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing systems. We establish the simulation systems employing the same structures of transmitter and receiver, the same structure of frame, and almost the same frequency-domain equalization method except the inverse fast Fourier transform processing. Both CD tolerance and nonlinear transmission performance in single-channel and wavelength-division-multiplexing scenarios are investigated. The comparison can reveal the difference of SC and MC transmissions.
Combined MMSE-FDE and Interference Cancellation for Uplink SC-FDMA with Carrier Frequency Offsets

Abstract:Due to its lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) compared with orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) has been recently accepted as the uplink multiple access scheme in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) of cellular systems by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). However, similar to OFDMA, carrier frequency offset (CFO) can destroy the orthogonality among subcarriers and degrade the performance of SC-FDMA. To mitigate the effect of CFOs, we propose a combined minimum mean square error frequency-domain equalization (MMSE-FDE) and interference cancellation scheme. In this scheme, joint FDE with CFO compensation (JFC) is utilized to obtain the initial estimation for each user. In contrast to previous schemes, where the FDE and CFO compensation are done separately, in JFC, the MMSE FDE is designed to suppress the MUI after CFO compensation. To further eliminate the MUI, we combine JFC with parallel interference cancellation (PIC). In particular, we iteratively design the MMSE FDE equalizer to suppress the remaining MUI at each stage and obtain better estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the system performance.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new iterative frequency domain equalization (FDE) algorithm for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) systems. This new FDE scheme is capable of enhancing the system fidelity by considering the complete frequency-domain second order description of the received signal. In addition, a new nulling filter design is also proposed for MIMO-GFDM systems to remove the residual interference, which further improves the system fidelity compared with the traditional scheme. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed FDE algorithm.

Abstract:A non-Cyclic Prefixed Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Single-Carrier Frequency-Domain Equalization (non-CP MIMO-SCFDE) system based on a recursive algorithm of Joint Channel Estimation and Data Detection (recursive-JCEDD) is proposed in this paper. Unlike the traditional CP MIMO-SCFDE system, the transmitted block of the proposed system is designed in the way that block-type pilot sequences and Single-Carrier (SC) information sequences have been arranged alternately without any cyclic prefix before each SC information sequence. Moreover, a recursive-JCEDD algorithm based on interference cancellation is proposed for the corresponding receivers. Simulation results show that the Bit Error Rate (BER) of the proposed system based on the recursive-JCEDD algorithm is lower than traditional CP MIMO-SCFDE or MIMO-OFDM with channel estimation for more than 0.5 dB.

Abstract:Single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) has recently been receiving much attention as an attractive technology for broadband wireless communications for its advantages such as low peak-to-average ratio and reduced sensitivity to carrier frequency offsets, when compared to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this paper, we investigate its combination with multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technology and propose a novel hybrid time-frequency domain equalizer, FDE-NP, which consists of a feedforward frequency domain equalizer and an array of time domain noise predictors (NPs). It is shown that the proposed scheme has lower complexity and achieves better performance and complexity trade-off than the conventional FDE designs. To evaluate the system performance, we will propose an accurate theoretical analysis based on the modified Chernoff bound and show that it is not only applicable to the proposed FDE-NP scheme, but also to general MIMO systems with equalization. By using the developed modified Chernoff bound and along with the simulation results, we will show that the proposed FDE-NP scheme can achieve significant performance improvement over the conventional FDE MIMO schemes.

Abstract:Coherent optical single-carrier frequency-division-multiplexing (CO-SCFDM) is a promising candidate for future high-speed long-haul optical fiber transmission system. Being a modified form of coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM), the CO-SCFDM can inherit the advantages such as low computation complexity and high flexibility, while suffers less nonlinear impairment due to much lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 1.08 Tb/s polarization-division multiplexing (PDM) CO-SCFDM transmission over 3170 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) only. The back-to-back and nonlinear transmission performances for CO-OFDM and CO-SCFDM are also compared.

Abstract:Single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) with multi-input multi-output (MIMO) has been recognized as an alternative technology to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) MIMO for broadband wireless communication systems, especially for the uplink transmission. Conventional studies focused on the FDE design with the assumption of perfect channel estimation. In this paper, we investigate the robust SC-FDE design for MIMO systems with imperfect channel estimation. Based on a statistical model for channel estimation, we derive the optimal equalization coefficients for the robust FDE with parallel interference cancellation and successive interference cancellation (SIC). We also propose a sub- optimal ordering algorithm for the SC-FDE scheme with SIC. Numerical results show that the proposed robust FDE MIMO schemes achieve 1.5dB~3dB gains in signal-to- noise ratio over the conventional non-robust FDE MIMO schemes.

Abstract:In the single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems, frequency synchronization is critical for demodulation. In this paper, a novel frequency synchronization algorithm is proposed for Unique Word (UW) based SC-FDE system. Taking advantage of the constant amplitude zero autocorrelation (CAZAC) characteristic of the UW, the algorithm realizes the carrier recovery via simple convolution operation. Performance analysis and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves not only the Cramer Rao lower bound (CRLB) but also a larger estimation range with lower realization complexity compared with the traditional algorithms.
