Abstract:Reactor design optimization is a challenging task that requires significant resources in terms of time, labor, and iteration. As advanced reactors continue to be developed, the design requirements and constraints may become more challenging, including economic, safety, and transportation considerations. Meeting these constraints and efficiently designing a reasonable reactor optimization solution within a short timeframe based on existing design experience is a significant challenge. In this paper, a combination of structure optimization and the characteristic statistical algorithm (CSA) is proposed to obtain reactor core optimization based on the existing limit of physics and thermal design. Neutronic design codes RMC/MCNTRANS are used to calculate neutronic performance, such as reactivity, power distribution, and fuel burnup. The thermal sub-channel code KMC-SUB is used to calculate coolant temperature. With the assistance of the Shenzhen Supercomputer Center, a large-scale computation was carried out, and a set of optimized core schemes meeting the constraints of nuclear design were found. Data analysis was then used to determine key design variables to guide the direction of continuous core optimization. The results show the feasibility of using CSA for core design optimization and provide insight into the importance of different design variables.
