Abstract:A neutron multiplicity counter is designed and calibrated with the integrated electronics data acquisition and processing software described here.The predelay time length search equations are developed by balancing the correlated counts and the background counts of Am-Li neutron sources.A deadtime coefficient fitting method minimizes the root mean square.Nine parameters are acquired and two plutonium samples are used to verify the counter performance and parameter calibration algorithm.Test results show that the design and calibration for neutron multiplicity measurements are valid.

Abstract:Neutron multiplicity pertains to the probability distribution of the quantity of neutrons released during induced or spontaneous fission processes within fissile materials. The technology for neutron multiplicity measurement leverages temporal correlations in the emission of fission neutrons from nuclear materials. It employs mathematical tools to elucidate the processes of neutron generation, multiplication within the nuclear material, and detection of outside nuclear materials. In this paper, two multiplicity counting methods are devised building on the RMC (Reactor Monte Carlo) code. The results obtained from both methods, including singles, doubles, and triples counting rates, exhibit good agreement with MCNP. Additionally, parameters associated with the detection efficiency and decay time of the apparatus are computed. By amalgamating the acquired singles, doubles, and triples counting rates, the mass of fissile material within the sample is inversely determined using a passive method with the point model equation. Notably, the point model equation reveals that spontaneous fission neutrons and induced neutrons possess distinct energy spectra, challenging the validity of the assumption that the probability of neutrons being captured without causing fission can be disregarded. In light of these considerations, the neutron multiplicity counting equation was rederived. The accuracy of the Monte Carlo simulation results is improved using the new method.

Abstract:The prompt neutron decay constant α of the Uranium-Plutonium metal assembly was meas-ured with Rossi-α technique at delay critical and sub-critical conditions,and then αc is obtained.The relation-ship between α with reactivity and α is analyzed with detector counts reciprocal.The comparison shows that the direct measured result under delay critical condition is 0.835±0.005/μs,which error is 1/6 of that from Rossi-a and extrapolation methods.

Abstract:To minimize the environmental burden of the disposal of spent nuclear fuel, nuclide management process is one of good candidates to separate and collect major nuclides in the spent nuclear fuel. After high heat load nuclides, high mobile nuclides, and long-lived nuclides are separated, collected, and fabricated as the waste form for the disposal. From safeguards perspective, nuclear material of the TRU/RE waste form should be verified. The amount of Plutonium can be estimated by Cm/Pu ratio using burnup code calculations and Cm-244 measurement. In this study, a fast neutron coincidence counter for Cm-244 neutron measurement of the TRU/RE waste form was designed with EJ-276 plastic scintillation detectors using PTRAC of MCNP6.2. The preliminary experimental performance evaluation using one EJ-276 plastic scintillation detector was conducted. And total and coincidence counting efficiency using a Cf-252 neutron source was calculated with respect to the number of detectors.

Abstract:Aiming at measuring the prompt neutron decay constant a of fast critical assemblies, Rossi-alpha method was improved by means of the acquisition of neutron and gamma time sequence. The application of the time sequence method in delayed critical & subcritical experiments at a fast critical assembly was here in described, focus in particular on the gamma analysis and the exploration of A/C ratio which directly affects the measurement precision of alpha. The reliability of the time sequence method is proved by the agreement of the a values obtained based on neutron and gamma. The A/C ratio based on neutron and gamma shows an obvious difference and the corresponding conclusion guides to a larger A/C ratio. The time sequence method shows advantages of higher experimental efficiency and flexible data analysis which contribute to more accurate experimental result. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In response to the significant dependency on empirical judgment in measuring the prompt neutron decay constant with the traditional Rossi-alpha method and the issue of requiring an excessive number of detectors with the DMD-Rossi-alpha method, this paper introduces a calculation method for the prompt neutron decay constant based on a combination of Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS), Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), and the Rossi-alpha method. Initially, the method uses LHS to expand the sample dataset of neutron noise data to reduce the number of detectors required. It then employs the Rossi-alpha method to construct a Rossi-alpha distribution model from neutron noise data. Finally, it utilizes DMD for feature extraction from the Rossi-alpha distribution model, thereby determining the prompt neutron decay constant. Research findings demonstrate that, by simulating the KUCA facility using RMC3.5 in a near-critical state, the relative error of the α value calculated by the LHS-DMD-Rossi-alpha method model is 9% less than that calculated by the Rossi-alpha method. This approach, capable of enhancing the precision of measuring the prompt neutron decay constant with just a single detector, holds significant theoretical value and engineering significance for the advancement of reactor physics and experimental techniques.

Abstract:A De Pangher-type long counter was constructed at Peking University for neutron fluence measurement. The responses and effective centers of the long counter were calculated using the Monte Carlo method. The variations with neutron energy of the position of the effective center, calculated by the Monte Carlo code, was experimentally validated with a 241AmBe neutron source and several mono-energetic neutron sources ranging from 100 keV to 6 MeV. Long counter calibration was performed using a radionuclide source from Peking University, and neutron fluence measured by the calibrated long counter was successfully compared to values determined with reference instruments (two recoil proton counters and a 238U fission chamber). The relative deviations were lower than 6% along the whole energy range. The calibrated long counter was thus successfully applied in the calibration of a Bonner sphere spectrometer.

Abstract:Passive neutron multiplicity counting is widely used as a nondestructive assay technique to quantify mass of plutonium material. One goal of this technique is to achieve good precision in a short measurement time. In this paper, we describe a procedure to derive mass assay variance for multiplicity counting based on the three-parameter model, and analytical equations are established using the measured neutron multiplicity distribution. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to evaluate precision versus plutonium mass under a fixed measurement time with the equations. Experimental data of seven weapons-grade plutonium samples are presented to test the expected performance. This variance analysis has been used for the counter design and optimal gate-width setting at Institute of Nuclear Physics and Chemistry.

Abstract:In this study, according to the establishment of the classical neutron multiplicity measurement equation, a fast-neutron multiplicity analysis and measurement equation is established, considering the influence of neutron scattering cross-talk, by means of theoretical analysis and computer simulation. Moreover, the fission rate F, multiplication M, and (α, n) reaction rate α in the established equation were solved. A new measurement method of scattering cross-talk was established and the established equation was validated using Geant4 simulation. The fast-neutron multiplicity counting equation has only a smaller deviation from the fast-neutron multiplicity counting system based on liquid scintillation detector, and it has a wider application prospect.

Abstract:Based on the principle of neutron multiplicity and data unfolding mathematics, this paper developed the software which can execute the neutron multiplicity analysis, neutron attenuation analysis, parameter calibration, Pu mass solution with the neutron pulse sequence acquisition method. The measurement system consisted of detector, nuclear electronic apparatus, pulsed sequence acquisition and analysis software was tested and calibrated by californium source. Three mental plutonium components with different mass were used for experimental assay and validation, which showed that the assay bias was within 15% against the nominal value of the samples.

Abstract:Fast neutron multiplicity counting (FNMC) analysis method is a new nondestructive analysis method for nuclear materials. It uses a fast neutron detector array to detect the neutrons emitted by the sample. The quality of plutonium in the sample is obtained by recording the neutron coincidence counting of fast neutron multiplicity. At present, the first three multiplets widely studied including singlets, doublets and triplets can no longer meet the needs of the research. In this paper, The derivation process of fast neutron multiplicity measurement equation for liquid scintillation detector is studied in detail based on the basic principle, neutron counting method, by using the methods of the factorial moments, probability generating functions and parameter estimation method, and considering the influence of scattering crosstalk. Finally, the fast neutron multiplicity measurement equation including singlets, doublets, triplets, quadruplets and pentuplets are established according to the parameter estimation method and the two kinds of solution methods of this equation are given. The work in this paper lays a theoretical and analytical foundation for the research of fast neutron multiplicity measurement system based on liquid scintillation detector.

Abstract:A neutron decays into a proton, an electron, and an anti-neutrino through the beta-decay process. The decay lifetime ($\sim$880 s) is an important parameter in the weak interaction. For example, the neutron lifetime is a parameter used to determine the |$V_{\rm ud}$| parameter of the CKM quark mixing matrix. The lifetime is also one of the input parameters for the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, which predicts light element synthesis in the early universe. However, experimental measurements of the neutron lifetime today are significantly different (8.4 s or 4.0$\sigma$) depending on the methods. One is a bottle method measuring surviving neutron in the neutron storage bottle. The other is a beam method measuring neutron beam flux and neutron decay rate in the detector. There is a discussion that the discrepancy comes from unconsidered systematic error or undetectable decay mode, such as dark decay. A new type of beam experiment is performed at the BL05 MLF J-PARC. This experiment measured neutron flux and decay rate simultaneously with a time projection chamber using a pulsed neutron beam. We will present the world situation of neutron lifetime and the latest results at J-PARC.

Abstract:Abstract Neutron multiplicity measurement technology utilizes the correlation of neutron emission times during fission in nuclear materials. By employing mathematical tools to interpret processes such as neutron generation, multiplication, and detection in nuclear materials, a point model equation can be derived through this process. Simultaneously, nuclear material mass can be inverted based on neutron multiplicity counting. Due to the different spontaneous fission neutron yields of uranium and plutonium, neutron multiplicity analysis methods are divided into active and passive methods. This article is based on the independently developed Monte Carlo program RMC, which models and analyzes the AWCC device, and studies the neutron multiplicity counting in both active and passive methods. At the same time, the parameters of the point model equations are calculated, and the influence of different gate widths on the results is analyzed, demonstrating the capability of RMC in solving this problem. This expands the application of RMC in this field and provides reference for the design of subsequent experimental instruments.

Abstract:Efficient calibration methods have been applied to a complex neutron detector array by using the cosmic-ray muons. Through a differential operation on the time difference spectrum, the two edges of this spectrum can be precisely determined, corresponding to the geometrical two ends of the bar, and therefore the relationship between the position and time difference spectrum can be deduced for each bar. The alignment between different bars is realized by choosing cosmic-rays which are perpendicular to the bars. The position resolutions are extracted through a track fitting procedure which uses all tracks detected coincidently by the whole system, together with a simulation analysis. A method is also developed to calibrate the deposited energy by using cosmic-rays at different incident angles.

Abstract:Fast neutron multiplicity counting (FNMC) analysis method is a new nondestructive method for nuclear materials, which defines sample plutonium quality by the fast neutron detection array with multiplicity counting technique. Referring to the most advanced FNMC experimental device, fast neutron multiplicity counter model was constructed in this paper. A series of typical plutonium material sample models were designed, which includes the plutonium metal with different isotopic abundance and different quality and the plutonium oxide. The correctness of the equations and the necessity to amend the original equation were verified by computer simulated measurement through C++ language Programming with the help of Geant4 simulation toolbox, fission software library function by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the IAEA provided neutron reaction data in Geant4 format. The simulation results showed the advantage of the new equation calculations than original equation calculations and the error of the new equations is less than half of that of the original equations.
Fissile Material Detection using Neutron Coincidence Counters

Abstract:A paper study is conducted on the detection of fissile material using neutron coincidence counters. Three unknown independent properties of assays of fissile material assays are identified to be the effective mass, the (alpha,n) production rate and the neutron multiplication rate. Singlet counting can only be implemented for very well-known assay samples. Doublet counting may be employed with calibration curves which reduce the number of unknowns from three to one. Multiplicity counting theoretically enables assay mass determination without calibration curves. Coincidence counting is most widely applied via active and passive well coincidence counters. Passive neutron well counters are well suited for determination of 240 Pu masses. Active neutron well counters are well suited for determination of fissile material masses. Active well counters are found to have relative mass errors of 4% for a highly enriched uranium (HEU) sample of mass of 1kg and 8% for a mass of 50g. Thermal neutron interrogation sources feature smaller relative errors in small assays than fast neutron interrogation sources.

Abstract:A pulse shape discrimination method to discriminate neutron events from backgrounds based on the double-pulse effect of 3He proportional counters is proposed and detailed in this paper. We made an ambient thermal neutron measurement system composed of a commercial 3He proportional counter tube and the corresponding readout electronics. The background of the system has been measured and the minimum detectable amount of the 3He proportional counter tube will be reduced by an order of magnitude with this method. The system was applied to measure the ambient thermal neutron flux inside a large neutron shielding structure at a deep underground laboratory and the pulse shape discrimination method proves to be effective.
Measurement of the neutron lifetime using a magneto-gravitational trap

Abstract:Precision measurements of the free neutron lifetime $\tau_n$, when combined with measurements of the axial vector form factor, can be used to test unitarity of the CKM matrix. Non-unitarity is a signal for physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Sensitivity to BSM physics requires measurements of $\tau_n$ to a precision of 0.1~s. However, the two dominant techniques to measure $\tau_n$ (colloquially beam and bottle measurements) disagree by nearly 10~s. UCN$\tau$ is a neutron lifetime experiment using a magneto-gravitational trap and an in-situ neutron detector. Neutrons in this trap are not susceptible to loss on material walls as in previous bottle measurements. Additionally, the in-situ detector allows spectral monitoring of the trapped Ultracold Neutrons. In this talk, I will present our most recent result - $\tau_n=877.7\pm0.7_\text{(stat.)}+0.4/-0.2_\text{(sys.)}$~s. I will also present Monte Carlo simulations of systematic effects in the experiment including heating and spectral cleaning.

Abstract:The leaking neutron flight-time effect influence on measurements of prompt neutron was analyzed and verified by experiments in order to obtain the prompt neutron decay constant for hydrogenous reactors through experiments.The results illustrate that prominent neutron flight-time effect influences the measurement and the flight-time effect can be smaller by reducing the detection distance and shielding the thermal neutrons for thermal neutron sensitive detector.
