Abstract:A robust 4-channel WDM optical phase modulated 60GHz wireless fiber system is proposed and simulated. In this system, a Fabry-Perot (FP) frequency interleaver is designated to suppress optical carriers for 60GHz signal generation. Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a 60-GHz bidirectional radio-over-fiber system with downstream orthogonal frequency division multiplexing address (OFDMA) and wavelength reuse upstream single-carrier frequency division multiple address (SC-FDMA). In the downstream, a 3-dB optical coupler is used for two-carrier injection-locking a distributed feedback (DFB) laser in order to realize the single-sideband modulation. In the upstream, the weakly modulated one of the two downstream carriers is filtered out for wavelength reuse. Transmission of 9.65-Gb/s 16-QAM downstream OFDMA on 60-GHz carrier and 5-Gb/s QPSK upstream SC-FDMA (2.5 Gb/s for each user) are both successfully demonstrated over 53-km standard single mode fiber without chromatic dispersion compensation. The crosstalk between the downstream OFDMA and the upstream SC-FDMA can be neglected.

Abstract:A high speed quasi-distributed demodulation method based on the microwave photonics and the chromatic dispersion effect is designed and implemented for weak fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Due to the effect of dispersion compensation fiber (DCF), FBG wavelength shift leads to the change of the difference frequency signal at the mixer. With the way of crossing microwave sweep cycle, all wavelengths of cascade FBGs can be high speed obtained by measuring the frequencies change. Moreover, through the introduction of Chirp-Z and Hanning window algorithm, the analysis of difference frequency signal is achieved very well. By adopting the single-peak filter as a reference, the length disturbance of DCF caused by temperature can be also eliminated. Therefore, the accuracy of this novel method is greatly improved, and high speed demodulation of FBGs can easily realize. The feasibility and performance are experimentally demonstrated using 105 FBGs with 0.1% reflectivity, 1 m spatial interval. Results show that each grating can be distinguished well, and the demodulation rate is as high as 40 kHz, the accuracy is about 8 pm.

Abstract:This work aims to discuss a study of numerical simulations of the performance of arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) demultiplexers in a fiber optical network in a special class of fiber denominated fiber of photonic crystal (PCF) considering the dispersive and non-linear effects. The proposed method is based on numerical simulations in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network configuration in PCF. For the simulation and analysis, the commercial OptiGrating software was used, a versatile numerical tool used to model integrated devices that incorporate FBG and OptiSystem software to simulate fiber propagation with non-linear and dispersive characteristics. The analysis of the performance of the systems was done through a comparison between the values obtained in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Quality Factor (Q Factor) in a dense WDM system with spacing between 50 GHz channels, and 12 Gbit/s transmission rate. The results show that the FBG demultiplexer in terms of the BER and the Q factor for the PCF was the one that obtained the best performance, when compared the FBG demultiplexer with SMF and the AWG demultiplexer obtained excellent results for both fibers.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the feasibility of a simple multigigabit-per-second (Gbps) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing multilevel orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signal modulation at 60 GHz and a single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). In this paper, the impact of fiber chromatic dispersion and OFDM beat noise on the performance of the RoF system are investigated by theoretical analysis, VPI WDM-TransmissionMaker simulation and experimental demonstration. A 13.875-Gb/s QPSK OFDM signal occupying the full 7-GHz license-free band at 60 GHz with frequency multiplication for the RoF link is demonstrated. After 3 km of standard single-mode fiber transmission with no dispersion compensation, the power penalty is less than 3 dB.

Abstract:Optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) is one of the key components for WDM systems to enable greater connectivity and flexibility of the network. Fiber grating based devices seem to be promising candidates for OADMs. Two types of OADMs based on fiber gratings and circulators are demonstrated. A novel structure with cascaded gratings is proposed to reduce the interferometric crosstalk which severely degrades the system performance in the common structure. The add/drop multiplexing experiments of 4-channel WDM signals indicate that in the cascaded gratings structure there is 8 dB reduction of the crosstalk for the added signal compared with the common structure and a complete suppression of the crosstalk for the dropped signal.

Abstract:In this article, a reconfigurable mixer based on only one dual-polarization quadrature phase shift -keying modulator (DP-QPSKM) is proposed and comprehensively demonstrated for a radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. By changing the detection unit and adjusting the dc voltages, the single-ended, double-balanced, image (IM)-free, mixing spurs suppressed, and dispersion-immune mixing can be implemented. Experimental results show that the ~60-dB IM rejection ratio and the spur suppression ratio are achieved. Moreover, the dispersion-induced power fading is successfully compensated by the dc voltage adjustment. The spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is about 100.56 dB.Hz<sup>2/3</sup>. Only one optical path is required without extra optical filters or phase-related devices, which makes the structure concise and stable. This structure would be more compact to meet the potential of integration if a dispersion medium with smaller size is available.

Abstract:We propose a silicon photonicgrating coupling scheme for dual-band multiplexing in optical fibers. By utilizing subwavelength grating effective refractive index engineering, a dual-band operating grating coupler and a wavelength-polarization diplexer are designed. Both devices are fabricated on a 220-nm silicon-on-insulator and require only one 220-nm full etch step to facilitate cost-effective production. The subwavelength grating coupler guides S-band and O-band lights from a single-mode fiber into a waveguide as transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic modes, while the subwavelength diplexer separates the two signals into two waveguides. Experimentally, our proposed scheme for coupling and multiplexing can achieve a total insertion loss of –4.26 dB at near 1490 nm and –5.86 dB at near 1310 nm.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a W-band (75-110 GHz) full-duplex transmission fiber-wireless-fiber system with the rate up to 60 Gb/s for the first time. Both the uplink and downlink in our proposed system consist of two spans of 80 km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) and a 1-m wireless link. We experimentally demonstrate that our proposed system can simultaneously transmit a 60 Gb/s upstream quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal carried by 99 GHz carrier frequency over the uplink and a 60 Gb/s downstream QPSK signal carried by 101 GHz carrier frequency over the downlink. Both millimeter-wave generation and demodulation are enabled by photonic techniques. Wireless crosstalk that occurs between the uplink and the downlink is effectively avoided because the pair of antennas adopted in the uplink is polarization orthogonal to that adopted in the downlink. With the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of 20 dB, the bit error ratios (BERs) for 60 Gb/s signal transmission are less than the third-generation forward-error-correction (FEC) limitation of 2 x 10(-2).
Passive Single-Mode Wavelength-Division (de)multiplexers for Short-Link Multi-Wavelength Applications in Field Environments

Abstract:We construct a passive grating-based wavelength-division (de)multiplexer (MUX/DMUX) for single-mode-fiber networks. The MUX/DMUX has almost identical bi-directional filtering characteristics on optical signals at wavelengths around 1550 nm. With total insertion loss less than 3 dB and an enlarged passing band of each channel, the encapsulated device exhibits very stable performance under temperature variation and is immune from mechanical vibration. The insertion loss of this device changes about 1 dB at temperatures from 25 degree(s)C to 60 degree(s)C, while the enter wavelength of each channel drifts about 8.3 X 10-4 nm/(nm(DOT) degree(s)C). Better results are expected with further optimization on the design. The device successfully demultiplexes 231 -1 PRBS signals up to 3.5 Gb/s per channel in an emulated amplifier-free local- area networks (LAN's) and metropolitan-area networks transmission. It is plausible the cost-effective MUX/DEMUX is an excellent candidate to meet 10 Gb/s all-optical multi- wavelength short-link applications.

Abstract:An 8×25-Gb/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system is demonstrated experimentally. The optical pulse source is based on optical frequency comb (OFC) generation and pulse shaping, which can generate nearly chirp-free 25-GHz 1.6-ps optical Gaussian pulse. The eightfold optical time-division demultiplexer consists of a single-driven dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) and a Mamyshev reshaper. Error-free demultiplexing of 8×25-Gb/s back-to-back (B2B) signal with a power penalty of 4.1 dB to 4.4 dB at a bit error rate (BER) of 10−9 is achieved to confirm the performance of the proposed system.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a four-mode division (de)multiplexer capable of operating in two distinct wavebands centered at 1550 nm and 1970 nm. The phase matching condition can be established across multiple wavebands in the asymmetric directional couplers. The 2 μm light can be coupled back and forth multiple times with a total coupling length that equals the minimum coupling length of the 1.55 μm light, and the structure could be scaled to more mode channels. As a proof of concept, the fabricated dual-band four-mode (TE0-TE3) device exhibits low insertion losses and crosstalk < 2.2 dB and < −13.0 dB from 1510 to 1590 nm, < 3.1 dB and < −10.6 dB from 1950 to 2000 nm, respectively. Moreover, we further demonstrate 4 × 114 Gbps optical transmission at 1.55 μm waveband and record-high 4 × 84 Gbps optical transmission at 2 μm waveband with PAM8 signals in the fabricated devices, respectively. The results indicate that the demonstrated multi-band mode division (de)multiplexer is promising for future chip-scale high-speed optical interconnects across multi-wavebands.

Abstract:A radio-over-fiber (RoF) system combines the advantages of fiber and wireless communication, has the characteristics of large bandwidth, low loss, and flexible mobility, and has broad development prospects in the future beyond 5G/6G communication networks. In this paper, we have realized the effective transmission of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift- keying (PDM- QPSK) signals with a transmission rate more than 100 Gbit/ s in the RoF system based on commercial optical transport network (OTN) real- time processing. Specifically, we respectively demonstrate the transmission of PDM-QPSK signals with a frequency of 22 GHz and a transmission rate of 125. 52 Gbit/s in 20 km+ 25 km two- span fiber and PDM-QPSK signals in 20 km+ 25 km two- span fiber and 1 cm wireless links with a frequency of 60 GHz and a transmission rate of 125. 52 Gbit/s. The results show that if soft-decision forward- errorcorrection (SD-FEC) coding with a 15% overhead is enabled, error-free transmission can be realized. In addition, we propose a new method for polarization modulation by an integrated dual- polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP- MZM) in the real- time processing. The RoF system reduces system complexity, which has great application value in future mobile data communication networks.

Abstract:A simple multi-band QPSK signal transmission scheme, constructed by using an optical remote up-conversion technique and a Schottky diode RF detector, is theoretically analyzed and experimentally implemented in a 60-GHz millimeter wave (mm-wave) radio over fiber (RoF) system, for the first time. There is no need for complex system architecture or any expensive high-frequency clock source in our scheme. Simulation results show that our scheme is highly tolerant to fiber dispersion, compared with the conventional 60 GHz multi-band RoF system. In the experimental demonstration, successful delivery of QPSK signals at two 60-GHz sub-bands is achieved over 50-km fiber and 4-m wireless distance. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A full-duplex radio over fiber link scheme with 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) 10 Gb/s downstream and 2.5 Gb/s upstream signals is proposed. In the downlink, the 60 GHz dual-tone optical millimeter-(mm-) wave signal carrier is generated by the 15 GHz local oscillator via a Mach-Zehnder modulator with frequency quadrupling. The 16-QAM 5 GHz IF signal is up-converted to 65 GHz by modulating it on one of the two tones with single-sideband (SSB) modulation at the central station. At the remote base station, the 65 GHz SSB optical mm-wave signal is detected by a high-speed photodiode. After the 60 GHz uplink dual-tone optical mm-wave carrier is abstracted by optimized filtering, the uplink 63 GHz mm-wave signal is modulated onto it to down-convert to the 3 GHz SSB optical IF signal. Since both the down- and uplink optical mm-wave signals have SSB spectra with the signal modulated on one of the two tones, they suffer little from the fiber dispersion. The simulation results show that the bidirectional signals have good performance even after being transmitted over 30 km standard single mode fiber.
