Abstract:The conversion gain of a photonic microwave mixer is often limited by the large carrier of the modulated optical signal, and may be further deteriorated by the chromatic dispersion-induced power fading after transmission over fiber. To solve this problem, an efficient photonic microwave mixer based on a dual-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator is proposed in this paper. The carrier of the modulated optical signal is suppressed by bidirectional use of the modulator in a Sagnac loop, and a 21.9-dB improvement of the conversion gain is achieved in the experiment. In addition, the frequency response of the mixer after transmission over fiber can be tuned by simply adjusting the direct current bias of the modulator. This feature is applied to compensate the dispersion-induced power fading of the mixing product. In the proof of concept experiment, a vector signal centered at 2.4 GHz is up-converted to 16 GHz and transmitted over 25-km single mode fiber. After power compensation, the constellation diagram, error vector magnitude and receiver sensitivity are significantly improved, and are almost as good as that without fiber transmission.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion of 10-Gb/s signal based on four-wave mixing is experimentally demonstrated in a 30-m-long dispersion-flattened microstructure fiber with small positive dispersion. For an average pump power of 26 dBm, the conversion efficiency was around -19.5 dB with the fluctuation less than +/- 1.4 dB, covering a conversion bandwidth of 20 nm. The eye diagram of the converted signal shows good eye opening.

Abstract:A novel method of wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in a dispersion-shifted fiber by using a spectrum-sliced fiber amplifier light source is demonstrated. By utilizing the wavelength region around the zero-dispersion wavelength of a fiber, a coherent light modulated by 5 Gbit/s RZ signal is converted with a conversion efficiency of -24 dB, the maximum wavelength conversion range of four wave mixing is about 3.4 nm.

Abstract:A novel all-optical multiplexing scheme based on dispersion matching technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The multiplexing parts are constructed by employing only standard single mode fibers and dispersion compensation fibers, which are simple and stable. The eye diagrams and bit error rate performance of such a multiplexing transmission system are also shown in this letter.

Abstract:Employing spectrally efficient PolMux-RZ-8PSK modulation format and single-ended digital coherent detection technique, we demonstrate 8 times 114-Gb/s DWDM transmission over 640 km of SSMF on a 25-GHz grid with record spectral efficiency of 4.2 bit/s/Hz, utilizing no optical dispersion compensation or Raman amplification. We show that the distortion caused by the direct square-law detection of the signal component with single-ended photo detection can be effectively mitigated by a novel DSP algorithm.

Abstract:Directly-modulated laser (DML) is widely employed in intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) system due to its low cost and high output power. However, the corresponding frequency chirp is regarded as one of the main disadvantages for its application in passive optical networks (PONs). In this paper, we theoretically analyze the frequency response evolution of DML based system under different chirp and dispersion conditions, proving that the system bandwidth can be improved by interactions between negative dispersion and DML chirp. Based on this concept, we experimentally demonstrated downstream 50 Gb/s PAM4 signal transmission over 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) access based on the 10 Gb/s DML operating at 1310 nm and avalanche photodiode (APD). A dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) providing -150 ps/nm dispersion at 1310 nm in the optical line terminal (OLT) is used to pre-equalize the frequency response of bandwidth-limited directly modulated signals in the optical domain. Thanks to our proposed dispersion-supported equalization (DSE) technique, the system bandwidth can be improved by 5 GHz. Feed-forward equalization (FFE), decision feedback equalization (DFE) and Volterra filter are employed to evaluate the signal performance improvement, respectively. By evaluating the receiver sensitivity, the DSE combined with FFE scheme shows 2 dB improvement than the complex Volterra algorithm, indicating its potential to reduce the complexity of digital signal processing (DSP) and therefore a lower cost and power consumption in PON.

Abstract:Polarization-insensitive 640 Gbit/s demultiplexing for OTDM data signals is demonstrated using a 100 m polarization-maintaining highly non-linear fibre. The scheme is based on four wave mixing (FWM) in a polarization-maintaining fibre loop (PMFL) with bidirectional operation. Less than 0.2 dB polarization dependence is obtained. The FWM efficiency is about -6 dB if the passive loss of the PMFL is not included. The flatness characteristic of the FWM efficiencies allows for the OTDM demultiplexing of a high speed signal with a bandwidth of 1.2 THz. Error free performance with low penalty for the demultiplexed 10 Gbit/s signal is achieved for the polarization scrambled 640 Gbit/s data signal. BER measurements and eye-diagrams show that the demultiplexed 10 Gbit/s signals with and without polarization scrambling have almost identical performance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 40-to-320-Gbit/s phase-coherent WDM-to-TDM multiplexing based on cross-phase modulation (XPM) and subsequent 320-to-40-Gbit/s demultiplexing using XPM-induced frequency shift in highly nonlinear fibers. An average penalty of approximately 7 dB at 10-9 BER is observed after the nonlinear processes.

Abstract:Simultaneous demultiplexing and regeneration of 40-Gb/s optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) signal based on self-phase and cross-phase modulation in a dispersion shifted fiber is numerically and experimentally investigated. The optimal walkoff time between the control pulse and OTDM signal is obtained by numerical simulation. Our experiment also shows that it is an effective method for realizing simultaneous demultiplexing and regeneration when used in the middle of a system or in the receiver with a proper walkoff time.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical phase multiplexing scheme using four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. Two 10-Gb/s pi/2-shifted return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals are successfully phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift-keying signal with a negative 1.6-dB power penalty. With more input DPSK WDM signals, the proposed scheme can be applied to obtain a multilevel phase-shift-keying signal with increased capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate probabilistically shaped 64-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (64QAM) 50-GHz-grid wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission with a bit rate of 400-Gbit/s per channel over 3,600-km Raman-amplified ultra-large effective area fiber (ULAF). Our results show that the probabilistically shaped 64QAM outperforms the hybrid-32/64QAM by 50% reach improvement. Thanks to pre-equalization and look-up-table pre-distortion, a 5.5-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) gain can be obtained. Furthermore, utilizing ULAF with Raman amplifier causes an apparent improvement on the transmission performance compared with using the SSMF with EDFA. We also compare the optical coupler with the wavelength selective switch utilized in the WDM system to explore a suitable way for WDM transmission. Advanced DSP including Butterworth low-pass digital filter is also used at the receiver end.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical time division demultiplexing from 8 X 2.5 Gb/s pseudorandom data stream using a nonlinear optical loop mirror, or nonlinear fiber Sagnac interferometer switch. To ensure good extinction ratio of the demultiplexed signal, some experimental results show it is necessary to adjust carefully the dc bias, modulation current, compression fiber length and switching width and synchronous between the data and control pulses.

Abstract:We demonstrate excellent all-optical demultiplexing of 40-Gb/s base-rate channels out of 160- and 320-Gb/s single polarization optical time-division-multiplexed data streams. The demultiplexer utilizes a semiconductor optical amplifier and an optical filter placed at the amplifier output. The center wavelength of the filter is blue-shifted from the wavelength of the clock signal, so that ultrafast chirp dynamics can be employed for optical switching. Error-free demultiplexing was achieved at very low optical switch powers: 3.5 mW (160-Gb/s data), 6.3 mW (320-Gb/s data), and 0.09 mW (40-GHz clock). The proposed demultiplexer has a simple structure and allows monolithic integration.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.
