Abstract:Zeolite crystals were synthesized at a lower temperature (150°C) by adding a nucleation solution prepared at higher temperature (190°C) to the mother solution. The effects of the Na2O/SiO2 ratio, nucleation time of the nucleation solution, and the ratio of Na2O/SiO2 ratio in the mother solution on crystal transformation between ZSM-5 and mordenite were investigated. The transformation between zeolite ZSM-5 and mordenite could be controlled effectively by changing the overall Na2O/SiO2 ratio in the overall solution. A Na2O/SiO2 ratio of 0.18 formed a boundary between ZSM-5 and mordenite phases when the overall solution had a composition of xNa2O:100SiO2:2.5Al2O3:12SO42−:4000H2O. When the Na2O/SiO2 ratio was increased higher than 0.18 by altering the composition of the mother solution, the ZSM-5 product formed by nucleation at higher temperature (190°C) could be transformed into mordenite crystals during crystallization at lower temperature (150°C). When the Na2O/SiO2 ratio was ≤ 0.18, a product containing both ZSM-5 and mordenite crystals was obtained during nucleation at higher temperature that could be transformed into ZSM-5 crystals during crystallization at lower temperature. A precondition for crystal transformation between ZSM-5 and mordenite was that the crystallinity of the product formed during nucleation at higher temperature must be ≤ 30%.

Abstract:The effects of NO3- and SO42- ions on the H+ concentration in organic phase and crystal morphology of solid product nesquehonite (MgCO3 center dot 3H(2)O) in the coupled reaction-extraction crystallization process were investigated. During the coupled process, the H+ concentration in organic phase increased with the increase in concentration of NO3- ions and decreased with the increase in concentration of SO42- ions, indicating that NO3- ions promoted the carbonization of MgCl2 while SO42- ions inhibited the same. The rodlike MgCO3 center dot 3H(2)O crystals became short and thick in the presence of both NO3- and SO42- ions. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and molecular dynamic simulation were used to clarify the mechanism by which impurity ions modified the structure. The results indicated that the NO3- and SO42- anions could be selectively adsorbed on the top facet (011) of MgCO3 center dot 3H(2)O, preventing the growth of crystal surfaces, which results in the decrease in length and increase in diameter of MgCO3 center dot 3H(2)O product. The morphology modification by NO3- ion was mainly due to the selective adsorption of NO3 ions. Both selective adsorption of ions and the incorporation of ions accounted for the morphology modification by SO42- ions.

Abstract:Nesquehonite synthesized by mixing MgCl2·6H2O and Na2CO3 at T 25°C, was thermally treated at various temperatures (170°C, 200°C, 295°C, 350°C, and 390°C), based on thermal analysis study of raw nesquehonite. The mineral phases formed at each temperature were studied by means of Raman microspectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. After thermal treatment of raw nesquehonite above 295°C, its dominant Raman peak at 1,100 cm−1, which corresponds to the v1 CO32− antisymmetric stretching vibrations, exhibits broadening and upshift of up to 10 cm−1, whereas the Raman peaks at 707 cm−1, at 770 cm−1, at 1,425 cm−1, and at 1,710 cm−1 disappear, and new Raman peaks arise at 1,282 cm−1 and at 1,386 cm−1. The latter have been attributed to the decomposition of HCO3−, in accordance with the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study. According to the differential thermal analysis study, water of crystallization is lost in two steps until 295°C; therefore, the phase studied above this temperature corresponds to Mg (HCO3)(OH). The Raman peak at 3,550 cm−1 assigned to the existence of OH−, exhibits weakening after thermal treatment. Our results corroborate a Mg (HCO3)OH·2H2O nesquehonite formula.

The Effect of Solution Chemistry on Nucleation of Nesquehonite

Abstract:Several series of nesquehonite nucleation experiments (62 experiments in total) were conducted in aqueous solutions having Mg2+/CO32- activity ratios (here referring to log(a(Mg2+)/a(CO32-))) ranging between -0.96 to 2.89, but different saturation states (Omega ranging between 2.49-6.90) and solution pH. The goal was to understand the effect of solution chemistry on the nucleation of nesquehonite. Our experimental results show that induction-time estimates from our precipitation experiments with similar Mg2+/CO32- activity ratios are consistent with classical nucleation theory (CNT), while the surface energy derived from CNT varies with Mg2+/CO32- activity ratios. The induction times of nesquehonite nucleation are scattered noticeably when the saturation state of solution is low (Omega < 4), and the nuclei surface energy, derived from the relationship between induction time and saturation state of solution, increases with increasing Mg2+/CO32- activity ratios. These observations can be explained by the different absorption behaviors of Mg2+ and CO32- and/or reduced Gibbs free energies through better screening of the electric double layer. A surface energy model involving solution composition is developed that combines surface complexation with electrostatic models. This new model takes into account how surface charge may affect surface energy. This model implies that the highest surface energy may occur around the point of zero charge (p.z.c), where the nucleation is fastest (or conversely, where the induction time is shortest) under low saturation states, but not under high saturation states. An accelerated attachment kinetic of monomers is also expected at the p.z.c. where high energy surface requires surface absorbed ions to have higher reactivity. This study provides deeper insight into mechanisms of nesquehonite nucleation in nature, and guidelines for accelerating the precipitation rates of nesquehonite.

Abstract:A valid strategy via a gas-solid reaction for preparing Mg-based nanocomposite with controllable crystallite size and suitable for massive production is proposed. The nanocomposites consisting of well-dispersed catalytic nano-Mg2NiH4/CeH2.73 embedded in the nano-MgH2 matrix with crystallite sizes of all phases below 10 nm are fabricated via controlling activation temperature and hydrogen gas (H-2) pressure upon the amorphous Mg80Ce10Ni10 alloy. Increasing H2 pressure and reducing temperature are beneficial for obtaining fine hydrides, leading to lowered hydrogen desorption temperature. MgH2 and CeH2.73 gradually grow up with the increase of de-/re-hydrogenation cycles, while Mg2NiH4 remains stable during cycling. After 15 de-/re-hydrogenation cycles, the finest nanocomposite shows remarkably reduced activation energy of dehydrogenation of 87 +/- 7 kJ/mol (similar to 160 kJ/mol for commercial MgH2). Abstract:The preparation of nesquehonite (MgCO3·3H2O) and hydrogen chloride by MgCl2 and CO2 based on a coupled reaction-extraction-alcohol precipitation process is an effective way for the comprehensive utilization of brine. The effects of impurity ions Na+, K+and Ca2+in brine on the morphology of the solid product obtained in the coupled reaction-extraction-alcohol precipitation process are investigated systematically. The results indicate that Na+and K+have a similar influence on the coupled process. The products are rod-like high purity MgCO3·3H2O when Na+ and K+ are added. Moreover, Na+ and K+ can be selectively absorbed onto the axial face (1 0 1) of MgCO3·3H2O, that will hinder the growth along the (1 0 1) direction and resulting a decrease in the diameter of MgCO3·3H2O. Ca2+shows a negative effect on the coupled process. The added impurity CaCl2 can react with CO2 and form spherical amorphous nano Mg/Ca-carbonate, which will decrease the purity of the solid products.
Synthesis of lansfordite under regulation of dicarbonate

Abstract:Lansfordite (MgCO3·5H2O) was synthesized via the reactive crystallization of MgCl2 with Na2CO3 under the regulation of NaHCO3. The effects of crystallization parameters on the crystallization process and products were experimentally investigated by means of SEM, XRD, TG techniques and taking into consideration the change of magnesium ion concentration during the crystallization process. MgCO3·3H2O was easy to generate as by-product in the synthesis process. Process conditions of pure MgCO3·5H2O preparation were as follows:NaHCO3 amount was ≥3.00 g·L?1, Na2CO3 feeding speed was 2—50 ml·min?1, reactive temperature was 0—5.0℃. The as-synthesized lansfordite crystals displayed prismatic morphology with smooth faces and a size of 20—160 μm. Analysis showed that crystallization kinetics was promoted with the addition of NaHCO3. 3HCO?group created the steric effect inhibiting nesquehonite growth but was beneficial for lansfordite crystallization. Therefore, pure lansfordite could be synthesized under the regulation of NaHCO3. Changes in process parameters could make the crystallization process shift between thermodynamic control and kinetic control, affecting crystal polymorph and morphology.

Abstract:HYPOTHESIS: It is a Holy Grail to realize the goal-oriented synthesis of zeotype crystals via direct thermodynamic/kinetic control of crystallization in the simplest inorganic system. Especially, the most commonly used counter cations (i.e., Na+ and K+) are in turn believed to play merely the role of balancing charges and stabilizing frameworks, which make the simple ion-based morphology/porosity control remain big challenges.EXPERIMENTS: We re-examined the role of Na+ and K+ to fine-tune the classical/nonclassical crystallization process in a seed-induced system with the simplest composition (Si/Al sources, inorganic alkali, and H2O), and proposed an "ion switch" strategy. By analyzing the multiple growth curves, tracking the precursor evolution, and observing epitaxial crystallization behavior, a distinctive "ion switch"-worked nonclassical mechanism was uncovered.FINDINGS: By the "ion switch" strategy, ZSM-5 mesocrystals were fine-regulated with diverse architecture from single crystal to nanocrystallite assembly and intracrystal mesopore-enriched crystal. Such simple ions-controlled crystallization was achieved through microstructure heterogeneity of zeolitic building-blocks triggered by different counterions and their corresponding assembly behavior from oriented attachment to random deposition. Furthermore, this protocol can be extended to a wider H2O/SiO2 range, mixed Na+/K+ systems, and other alkali metal ions from Li+ to Cs+, and ZSM-5 mesocrystals with extended morphologies can be obtained.

Abstract:Batch reactive crystallization of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) from ammonium carbonate ((NH4)(2)CO3) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4) was investigated in the presence of magnesium (Mg2+) ions. It was observed that Mg2+ ions partly inhibited the conversion of CaSO4 into CaCO3. When the content of Mg2+ was less than 2%, the reduction in conversion rate of CaSO4 was less than 2%, and the effect of Mg2+ ions could be ignored. Effect of impurity on crystallization kinetics of CaCO3, including the growth rate and nucleation rate, was investigated. The results revealed that when Mg2+ ions content was less than 1%, Mg2+ could promote the growth of CaCO3 and inhibit the nucleation process, which was favorable for the filtration of CaCO3.When the content of Mg2+ ions was greater than 1%, Mg2+ inhibited the growth of CaCO3, which resulted in explosion nucleation and led to a large number of particles in the solution, which was unfavorable for the filtration of CaCO3. Based on the Bransom model, the particle size distribution equations of CaCO3 were established. X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy images exhibited the existence of spherical vaterite of CaCO3 due to the reaction of CaSO4 with (NH4)(2)CO3 under the effect of Mg2+ ions, which was inconsistent with the results reported in the literatures.
On-line FBRM Investigation of Secondary Processes of Nesquehonite in the Electrolyte Solutions

Abstract: On-line FBRM(Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement) was employed to monitor the change trends of particle chord length (CL) and counts per second (CPS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize sample morphology and crystal form. Based on these, the secondary processes of nesquehonite in electrolyte solutions were investigated. Experimental results show that:NaCl and Na2CO3 have no significant effects on the nesquehonite secondary processes. Nesquehonite particles become larger in MgCl2 solution. Theoretical calculations show that the Ostwald ripening is not obvious in the secondary processes of nesquehonite. Based on the analysis of the nesquehonite structure and the products morphology, it was found that the MgCl2 greatly promotes the aggregation of nesquehonite crystals. The morphology of nesquehonite is transferred from the rod-like to the bundle-like structure by aggregation. Under the experimental conditions, the chord length increases more than 20% and it firstly increases and then decreases with the increase of MgCl2 concentration. The aggregation occurrs among those particles with the chord length below 20μm. The aggregation leads to the increase in particle number and size of particles with the chord length above 20μm.

Abstract:Controlled nanocrystallization of glasses is prerequisite for developing transparent glass-ceramics with functionalities that determined by precipitated nanocrystals and residual glassy matrix. However, simultaneously control of nanocrystal phase and size in glasses has not yet been achieved. Herein, we introduce a modified chalcogenide flux protocol to precisely design metal halide (MX) nanocrystals in glassy matrices. The size and amount variation of MX nanocrystals were quantified with thorough microscopic analysis, demonstrating the growth of MX nanocrystals occurs with the depletion of smaller ones. We reveal an Ostwald-ripening controlled nanocrystallization mechanism for simultaneously controlling over the crystal phases and crystal growth of MX precipitates in chalcogenide glassy matrices. These results not only show a new fact for understanding the nature of glass formation and crystallization, but also provide a simple and convenient route to robust glass-ceramic materials embedded with a variety of MX nanocrystals for novel photonic applications.

Reactive Crystallization Process of Hydromagnesite Microspheres

Abstract:Hydromagnesite is an important chemical raw material and product.A reactive crystallization method was provided to prepare hydromagnesite microspheres directly in experiments.The effects of stirring time,reactive temperature and reactant concentrations on the morphology and particle size were studied.The formation mechanism of hydromagnesite microspheres was analyzed.The results show that hydromagnesite microspheres with controllable size and good shape can be obtained by controlling the stirring time.The size of particles is 10—43 μm with the coefficient of variation of 28%—43%.It is found that the amorphous substance is first generated by the reaction of magnesium chloride and sodium carbonate in the crystallization process.The amorphous substance gradually transfers to crystal phase.The study shows that the stirring has a significant impact on the phase transfer of amorphous substance.Crystal nuclei form during the stirring process.Under the static condition,the growth process of amorphous substance onto the pre-existed crystals is dominant.As a result,the crystal size and morphology can be regulated by the stirring time.

Abstract:Utilizing MgO as the precursor and deionized water as the solvent, this study synthesized nanoparticles of Mg(OH)2 via hydrothermal methods, aiming to control its purity, particle size, and morphology by understanding its growth under non-uniform nucleation. Characterization of crystal morphology and structure was conducted through scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while laser particle size detection assessed the secondary particle size distribution. The study focused on how MgO's hydrothermal process conditions influence Mg(OH)2 crystal growth, particularly through ion concentration and release rate adjustments to direct crystal growth facets. These adjustments shifted the dominant growth plane, enhancing the peak intensity ratio I001/I101 from 1.03 to 2.14, thereby reducing surface polarity and secondary aggregation of crystals. The study of the physicochemical properties of the same sample at different times revealed the pattern of crystal dissolution and recrystallization. A 2 h hydrothermal reaction notably altered the particle size distribution, with a decrease in particles sized 0.2~0.4 μm and an increase in those sized 0.4~0.6 μm, alongside new particles over 1 μm, indicating a shift toward uniformity through dissolution and recrystallization. Optimal conditions (6% magnesium oxide concentration, 160 °C, 2 h) led to the synthesis of highly dispersed, uniformly sized magnesium hydroxide, showcasing a simple, eco-friendly, and high-yield process.

Abstract:In order to achieve efficient recovery of ions from the simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification wastewater, the effects of various factors (i.e. the saturation temperature, the cooling termination temperature, the stirring rate and the cooling rate) on crystallization yield, metastable zone width and crystal morphology were investigated to determine the optimal crystallization conditions of Mg2+//SO42-, NO3-H2O system. According to the results of experiments, the nucleation kinetics were also speculated by Nyvlt self-consistent equation and classical 3D nucleation theory. Also, the crystallization products were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Under the determined optimal conditions, the yield of the crystal can reach 78%, and the crystal products were verified as pure MgSO4. 7H(2)O, whose morphology is complete without defects.

Abstract:Production of anhydrous magnesium chloride by dehydra ti on of bischofite is one of the best ways to utilize the magnesium resource of sa lt lakes. Formation of magnesium chloride hexammoniate (MgCl 2·6NH 3) is the critical step of the coupled reaction crystallization process, which is an att ractive dehydration process. Primary nucleation of MgCl 2·6NH 3 by reaction crystallization process was performed in this research. The induction period of MgCl 2·6NH 3 primary nucleation was measured by the laser method, and classi cal theory of primary nucleation was used to quantify the nucleation process. W hen supersaturation ratio (S=C/C*)S2,homogeneous nucleation occurred; when S2,heterogeneous nucleation occurred.The relationships among critical free energy of nucleation,critical size of nucleus and supersaturation was obta ined.Critical free energy and critical size of nucleus decreased with increasing supersaturation.
Effect of Alcohol on the Crystallization Process of MgCO3·3H2O: an Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

Abstract:The effect of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and isopropanol) on the crystallization process of nesquehonite was investigated by combining experiments and molecular dynamics simulation. With the presence of alcohol, the transformation rate from Mg(HCO3)(2) to MgCO3 center dot 3H(2)O can be accelerated apparently and the solubility of MgCO3 center dot 3H(2)O can be reduced significantly. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicates that Mg(HCO3)(2) is unstable and can be transformed to pure MgCO3 center dot 3H(2)O easily. Based on the molecular dynamics simulation, we find that alcohol enhances the desolvation of Mg2+ through reducing the water molecules in the first solvation circle of Mg2+. Hence, the solvation energy could be reduced, which is beneficial for the precipitation of Mg2+. The results in this study provide theoretical foundations for the coupled reaction-extraction-alcohol precipitation process to fix CO2 and produce MgCO3 center dot 3H(2)O.

Abstract:Can we control the crystallization of solid CaCO3 from supersaturated aqueous solutions and thus mimic a natural process predicted to occur in living organisms that produce biominerals? Here we show how we achieved this by confining the reaction between Ca2+ and CO32- ions to the environment of nanosized water cores of water-in-oil microemulsions. Using a combination of in situ small-angle X-ray scattering, high-energy X-ray diffraction, and low-dose liquid-cell scanning transmission electron microscopy, we elucidate how the presence of micellar interfaces leads to the formation of a solute CaCO3 phase that can be stabilized for extended periods of time inside micellar water nano-droplets. We can also control and >>on-demand<< trigger the actual precipitation and crystallization of solid CaCO3 phases through the targeted removal of the organic-inorganic interfaces.

Abstract:In this study, nesquehonite MgCO3·3H2O whiskers with long length and high aspect ratio were synthesized through reactive crystallization, in which MgCl2 and Na2CO3 precipitated in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The effects of SDS concentration, reactive temperature and reactants concentration were investigated. SEM, XRD and FT-IR were used to character morphology and structure of the products. It was found that the presence of SDS in the mixed aqueous solution was an important parameter for the morphology and size of nesquehonite crystals. The morphology of nesquehonite crystals changed from rod-like to bundle-like with increasing SDS concentration. The average length of nesquehonite whiskers was about 87–180 μm while the aspect ratio was 18–45. The longest length reached 250 μm and the biggest aspect ratio was about 100. The reactive temperature and reactant concentration also affect the size even the crystal type. It is concluded that SDS was beneficial for oriented growth of one-dimensional nesquehonite whiskers based on the formation process of the nesquehonite whiskers. The possible mechanism of SDS in nesquehonite whiskers precipitation was ascribed to physical adsorption of SDS on the individual amorphous nanoparticles or crystallites. The critical point of oriented growth occurred when the SDS concentration was about 4.33 mM.
Metastable Zone Width and the Primary Nucleation Kinetics for Cooling Crystallization of NaNO3 from NaCl-NaNO3-H2O System

Abstract:For investigating the fractional crystallization process of high-saline wastewater from coal chemical industry, the primary nucleation kinetics of NaNO3 during cooling crystallization was studied. 20 g NaCl/100 g H2O was added to simulate the high-saline environment, which resulted in a ternary NaCl-NaNO3-H2O mixture system. Based on the measured solubility and supersolubility in the temperature range from 288.09 to 311.70 K by using ultrasonic velocity sensor, the effects of stirring rate, cooling rate and presence of seed crystals on the metastable zone width (MSZW) were analyzed. The results showed that increasing the saturation temperature as well as increasing the stirring rate will make the MSZW of NaNO3 narrow. This is mainly attributed to the intensification of mass transfer and diffusion, which promotes the crystal nucleation. By contrast, the change in the size of solute molecular clusters in the solution may lag behind the transformation of the solution state, so that the MSZW of NaNO3 becomes wide when increasing the cooling rate. Meanwhile, because the addition of seed crystals is beneficial to induce the solution to start crystallization at a lower supersaturation, it always leads to the narrowing of MSZW, whereas the dosage has a relatively weak effect in the scope of experimental research. Furthermore, self-consistent Nyvlt-like equation and classical 3D nucleation theory were used to study the primary nucleation kinetics of NaNO3 during cooling crystallization process. Corresponding nucleation kinetic equations were regressed based on the experimental data. The activation energies E-sat of NaNO3 nucleation process fitted by these two models were 28.97 and 26.08 kJ/mol, respectively.
