Abstract:Nearly monodispersive CaF2 hollow microspheres were synthesized by a facile aqueous solution route from the mixed aqueous solutions of CaCl2, Na2WO4, and NaF at room temperature. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and N-2 adsorption-desorption techniques. The CaF2 hollow microspheres have an average diameter of about 1.5 mu m and a hollow interior of 0.5 mu m. The shell is composed of numerous single-crystalline nanoparticles with diameter of about 20 nm. The morphologies and diameters of the CaF2 products are strongly dependent on the experimental parameters, such as the concentration of the aqueous NaF solution and the reaction temperature. The synthetic experiments indicate that the growth process of CaF2 hollow microspheres involves first the formation of CaWO4 solid microspheres and then the formation of CaF2 solid microspheres through the reaction between CaWO4 and F- ions controlled by the difference of the solubility product for CaWO4 and CaF2. Phenomenological elucidation based on TEM observations and XRD patterns of intermediate products at different precipitation stages indicates that the formation mechanism for the CaF2 hollow microspheres is related to the Ostwald ripening mechanism. N-2 adsorption-desorption measurement shows that the CaF2 hollow microspheres possess a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and porosity properties. The synthetic procedure is straightforward and represents a new example of the Ostwald ripening mechanism for the formation of inorganic hollow structures in an aqueous solution at room temperature.
Elaboration, Structure and Luminescence of Sphere-Like CaF2:RE Sub-Microparticles by Ionic Liquids Based Hydrothermal Process

Abstract:A new and simple method for the synthesis of rare earth ion doped CaF₂ (CaF₂:RE³⁺) sub- microparticles is presented, using an ionic liquids based hydrothermal process. The structural properties of the CaF₂ nanoparticles were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The CaF₂ nanoparticles exhibited a sphere-like morphology with a diameter of about 150 nm. During the synthesis, the ionic liquid [bmim]BF₄(1-butyl, 2-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate) acts as both a co-solvent and reactant. The crucial effect of EDTA-2Na (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid disodium salt) on the formation of CaF₂:RE sub-microparticles was explored and discussed. The strong green (513-569 nm) and strong red (636-685 nm) upconversion emissions of the CaF₂:Er³⁺, Yb³⁺ nanoparticles (λex = 980 nm) were also investigated. The luminescent properties of CaF₂:Eu³⁺ and CaF₂:Ce³⁺,Tb³⁺ were also evaluated. This work may represent a new step in synthesizing fluoride sub-nanocrystals using ionic liquids.

Abstract:Monodisperse orthorhombic-phase BiF3 nanocrystals with various shapes were prepared easily by a novel solvent extraction approach using an acid-base-coupled extractant. More importantly, the extractant used in this route can be recycled after synthesis. Our results show great promise for further extending the method to the preparation of other metal-fluoride nanoparticles.

Abstract:Multiferrocenyl and multiadamantyl cuboctahedron nanospheres were synthesized via rapid self-assembly reactions of twelve 90 degrees Pd-II-containing compounds and twenty-four 120 degrees organic bidentate N-ligands in acetone solution. The selected self-assembly reaction and corresponding solvent were demonstrated to be effective and simple in the preparation of self-assembled nanospheres. DOSY NMR spectroscopy, AFM images and theoretical calculations confirmed the formation of cuboctahedron complexes with the size of 4-5 nm. Multifunctional molecular self-assembly processes offer considerable synthetic advantages including significantly fewer steps, fast and facile formation of final desirable products, and will lead to a new multifunctionality platform for cuboctahedron complexes.

Abstract:Mesoporous YF3 nanoflowers were successfully prepared via solvent extraction route. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations indicated that these nanoflowers with uneven porous architectures had a spherical shape and were consisted of many YF3 nanosheets with a thickness of about 15nm. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was used to check the chemical composition and purity of the products. YF3 nanoflowers had bimodal mesoporous distribution and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of 116m2/g.

Abstract:A cost-effective approach to prepare carbon spheres (CSs) in a large quantity by pyrolizing the C2Cl4/Fe(C5H 5)2 mixture at 550°C, was discussed. The mixture was loaded into a stain-less steel autoclave and put into an electronic furnace at a constant temperature of 550°C. The dark solid formed after a period of cooling down at room temperature, was divided in to two parts. These products were then analyzed through x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), raman spectrum and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FSEM). FSEM and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images revealed a large quantities of carbon spheres of the range 30-580 nm sizes.

Abstract:Size-controlled CeF3 nanoparticles were synthesized via the reversed micelles formed in solvent extraction system.By adjusting the concentration of organic phase,the components of feed and stripping solution,the nucleation,the growth and coagulation of the particles could be controlled.And also the size of CeF3 nanoparticles could be controlled effectively.A turning point in the concentration of Triton X-100 was found in particle dispersion.The coagulation of particles was accelerated with the increase of the concentration of Triton X-100().When equaled a critical value,the coagulation was prevented and the dispersion became better.

Abstract:Mono-dispersed semiconductor ZnS hollow spheres with the diameter of 300-500 nm and the shell thickness of about 100-150 nm have been synthesized successfully by solvothermal method from ethanol solution in the presence of a special surfactant-quaternary ammonium salt of 2-undecyl-1-dithioureido-ethyl-imidazoline (SUDEI) made in our lab. The mono-dispersed ZnS hollow spheres are characterized by XRD, size distribution investment, UV-vis, TEM, and SEM, respectively. The UV-vis measurement indicates that there is a broad absorption at 210-280 nm, which is likely to be caused by "hollow-effect." A growth mechanism of ZnS hollow spheres has also been put forward and discussed.

Abstract:This manuscript reports the solvothermal method for the fabrication of monodisperse and single-crystal Fe3O4 hollow microspheres with a diameter of 200nm in the presence of Na2CO3. The effects of reaction parameters like the reaction time and the reagent concentration on the structure of the resultant samples are investigated. The amount of water in the reaction system plays an important role during the reaction process. The formation mechanism for Fe3O4 hollow spheres is illustrated by an Ostwald ripening process. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM and scanning electron microscopy are used to characterize the as-prepared products. The Fe3O4 hollow spheres reveal a ferromagnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization of 75.3emug−1, a remnant magnetization of 2.0emug−1, and a coercivity of 31.3Oe at room temperature.

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4 hollow spheres were successfully synthesized with a water in oil in water (W/O/W) emulsion. During the facile procedure, no high pressure, high temperature, or other complex reaction conditions were required. Transmission electric microscope (TEM) images showed that all the hollow structural products have a good spherical morphology with an average diameter of 160 nm. The average size and the size distribution were further determined with dynamic light scattering (DLS), which reveals that the hollow nanospheres have a narrow size distribution. The average size from DLS was about 180 nm, which approximated that from TEM data. X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrates that the products were all Fe3O4 phase without any impurity. By increasing or decreasing the dosage of precipitate and precipitant sources, we controlled the shell thickness successfully in the tens of nanometers range. The formation mechanism of those hollow magnetic nanospheres was discussed by using the "reverse micelle transport" mechanism.

Abstract:Silica hollow spheres with different shell porosity were simply synthesized with micelle and emulsion dual templating route. Various anionic surfactants, such as palmitic acid (C(16)AA), N-acyl-L-phenylalanine (C(18)Phe), N-palmitoyl-L-alanine (C(16)AlaA) and oleic acid (OA) have been used as templates, and 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APES) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) have been used as co-structure directing agent (CSDA) and silica source, respectively. The circle lamellar layer structure and mesopores vertical to the silica hollow spheres surface are believed to originate from the initial formation of amphiphilic carboxylic acid oil drop, which afterwards self-assemble to form the shell of hollow spheres and its mesostructure upon addition of CSDA and silica source. The mesoporous silica hollow spheres with high porosity could be achieved by adding a moderate amount of ethanol in the OA synthesis system, depending on the co-surfactant effect of ethanol that changes the curvature of micelles. The particle diameter and the hollow structure have been controlled by choosing different templates and by manipulating synthesis gel composition. The average particle diameter of the mesoporous silica hollow spheres were controlled in the range of 80-220 nm with constant shell thickness of similar to 20 nm and constant mesopore size of similar to 4 nm. Besides, the formation of the silica hollow spheres has been investigated in detail with reaction time. These mesoporous silica hollow spheres would have potential applications on catalysis, bimolecular encapsulation, adsorption, drug release, etc. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A facile solution-phase method has been developed to synthesize specially hollow and solid ZnS nanospheres. High-resolution TEM images on the nanospheres suggest their formation via the oriented aggregation of the primary ZnS nanocrystals. The morphology and size of the ZnS nanospheres can also be tuned easily by controlling the experimental conditions. These special spherical structures are very easily encapsulated within a uniform silica layer without any surface modification, suggesting potential applications in biochemistry and biodiagnostics.

Abstract:Development of sustainable routes for synthesis of zeolites is very important because of wide applications of zeolites at large scale in the fields of catalysis, adsorption, and separation. Here we report a novel and generalized route for synthesis of zeolites in the presence of NH4F from grinding the anhydrous starting solid materials and heating at 140-240 degrees C. Accordingly, zeolites of MFI, BEA*, EUO, and TON structures have been successfully synthesized. The presence of F- drives the crystallization of these zeolites from amorphous phase. Compared with conventional hydrothermal synthesis, the synthesis in this work not only simplifies the synthesis process but also significantly enhances the zeolite yields. These features should be potentially of great importance for industrial production of zeolites at large scale in the future.

Abstract:Potassium nickel fluoride (KNiF3) hollow spheres with diameters of 200–400nm have been solvothermally synthesized at 110°C using KF and NiCl2 as reactants in ethanol, without additional template materials or surfactants. The results of XRD and XPS indicate that the products are perovskite-type KNiF3. TEM microphotos show that the hollow spheres are composed of KNiF3 nanoparticles with an average size of 10nm, and the wall thickness is 20–40nm. UV–vis and PL spectra have recorded the optical properties of KNiF3 hollow spheres. A possible mechanism for the formation of KNiF3 hollow spheres is also discussed.

Abstract:Hollow carbon spheres containing Fe3N nanocrystals (Fe3N/HCSs) are synthesized by ferrocene and ammonium chloride in high pressure argon at 500 °C. The structure, morphology and properties of the products are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The hollow carbon spheres have diameters of 1-10 µm and shell thickness of hundreds of nanometers. The dimensions of the acicular Fe3N nanocrystals have diameters of ca. 100 nm and lengths of 600-800 nm. The weight percent of Fe3N nanocrystals in Fe3N/HCSs is about 37.8%. The saturation magnetization value of the hollow carbon spheres containing Fe3N nanocrystals is 10.61 emu/g.

Abstract:A seed-induced in-situ hydrothermal conversion technique is proposed to prepare novel hollow microspheres with zeolite/mullite composite shells from fly ash cenosphere (FAC), a solid waste with a hollow structure from coal power stations. Two groups of hollow microspheres were prepared, one with zeolite FAU/mullite composite shells and the zeolite LTA/mullite composite shells. The FAC in this study plays dual roles as both the template cores and the aluminosilicate nutrition contributor. The final products inherit the hollow spherical morphology of FAC and possess zeolite crystals and the inner porous shell of mullite. Such hollow zeolitic materials are expected to have many advantages in applications such as catalysis, adsorption, separation, and as releasing capsules.

Abstract:Monodisperse Fe3O4nanospheres with uniform particle size distribution were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method, without adding any surfactants and structure directing agents. The morphology, structure and phase composition of the nanospheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption stripping curves and pore size distribution curves. The measurements revealed that the Fe3O4nanospheres were assembled by 5-10 nm nanocrystallines; with porous structure, their specific surface area reached 41 m2/g. In addition, the formation mechanism of the nanospheres was elaborately analyzed by adjusting the solvothermal reaction temperature and time. It's confirmed that this preparation method has a strong universality. ZnO and CuO nano- and microspheres have been synthesized with the same or similar experimental parameters. These nano-and microspheres will have a more significant application prospect in the energy- and environment-related fields for the use of li-ion battery anode, supercapacitor, catalysis, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a novel method for the fabrication of small monodisperse hollow silica spheres. In this approach, when silica shells were coated on polystyrene particles by the sol-gel method, the polystyrene cores were dissolved subsequently, even synchronously, in the same medium to form monodisperse hollow spheres. Neither additional dissolution nor a calcination process was needed to remove the polystyrene cores. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and porosity measurements were used to characterize the monodisperse hollow silica spheres.
