Abstract:Li Shen's 46-line poem written after he encountered calumny in the Hanyuan was an important document about the contention between Niu and Li and the literature in Tang Dynasty. Although it was the poet's personal account of history, yet a lot of people and events were mentioned, especially the contention between the two different schools headed by Niu and Li. It is of great significance if we use this as a case to explore the relationship between the political events and literature in Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:Confucian culture has always been the most glorious component of Chinese culture. Governing the mainstream world of China for more than two millennia, it has cast a profound and long-lasting influence on the way of thinking and cultural-psychological formation of the Chinese people. Confucianism emphasizes caring about others with benevolence and governing a state with ethics, reflecting the importance of moral principles for politics. "Ren" and "Li" are important parts of the core values of Confucianism, so analyzing the differences between them and their evolution is of great significance for further understanding Confucian culture. This paper selected 132 classic Confucian works from SikuQuanshu, a large collection of books compiled during the Qianlong's reign of the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), to calculate the use of frequency of "Ren" and "Li" in those books by means of big data. Then the data was analyzed to show the development trajectory of "Ren" and "Li" from the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC) to the Qing Dynasty, providing a new perspective for the study of Confucian culture. The analysis result shows that from the Spring and Autumn period to the Qing Dynasty, both the frequencies of "Ren" and "Li" record a peak and a bottom: "Ren" has its peak in the Sui and Tang period (581-907) while "Li" reaches its climax in the Wei and Jin period (220-420); both "Ren" and "Li" hit their bottom during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). The average frequency of "Li" is higher than that of "Ren" during most of the time (eight dynasties and periods). In general, "Li" is more frequently referred to in classic Confucian works than "Ren," especially in those of the pre-Sui and Tang era. The An-Shi Disturbances in the Tang Dynasty may mark an important turning point for the frequencies of "Ren" and "Li" in classic Confucian works.

Abstract:Analects 2.3 is a key passage in the construal of Confucius' political and legal thought, but readings of it diverge. Many scholars view it as a broader evaluation of the rule of law relative to that of rites, while some read it more specifically as pertaining to the coercive enforcement of morality. Some read the quotation as an instrumental, conformist tenet, whereas some perceive its humanistic and ethical nature. Textual and contextual findings show that the latter categories in both cases are the more plausible. This clarification illuminates differences between Confucius' notion of virtue-rites guidance and later variations that may lack respect for moral autonomy.
A New Interpretation of the Chapter Mutual Concealment of Offences among the Kin in the Analects

Abstract:The character "yin"in the words "yin kuo","yin rou","yin shen","yin shi","yin he","yin du" should be read as "yin". Therefore, the chapter "fu wei zi yin, zi wei fu yin" in the article Zi Lu of The Analects is very likely to means that the father should correct his son, and the son should correct his father too. The Confucianism in pre-Qin, whose representative was Confucius, were not Consanguinist; they would abide by rules of morality when paternity conflict with public morality. So Confucius was not able to advocate concealment of offences for one’s father. There is no relationship between the concealment of offences for parents and the "lin er ren bu ke" in the Bamboo Slips of Nei Li in Shanghai Museum. To interpret this article in accordance with "ren bu ke" of Nei Li will violate the fundamental principle "Sincere" of Confucian behave.

Abstract:Confucius,the founder of Confucianism,was a great philosopher and educationist in ancient China. "Ren" is the central concept of Confucius educational philosophy and theory,and one of the most discussed topics by Confucius and his disciples. To understand what "Ren" is requires a good understanding of three sayings of Confucius. The first one is "to love others",which is the guiding principle;the others are "treating people the way you want to be treated" and "to help others to take their stand in so far as he himself wishes to take his stand,and get others there in so far as he himself wishes to get there",which are the codes of conduct. Methodologically,sympathy is the basic way to practice "Ren". Confucius' comments upon "Ren" are of great significance for modern education. They inspire us to reflect upon the human nature and aims of education,the value judgment and moral affection in education,and the role of sympathy in moral education and development. However,Confucian thought also has some faults,including the origin of "Ren",and the approach from loving family members to strangers,and the inner intention between "Ren" and equality and justice in education and beyond. Such issues need to be further explored.

Abstract:It has long been accepted that the ancient Chinese ruler–subjects relationship was a metaphorical extension of the father–son relationship, where loyalty and family reverence were considered synonymous. The Confucian classic the Xiaojing is taken as a significant piece of evidence supporting this view. However, based on the annotated version of the Xiaojing discovered in Dunhuang, it is evident that during the Han Dynasty and the Six Dynasties period, Confucian scholars made clear distinctions between father–son relationships and ruler–subjects relationships. They also made a clear differentiation between the moral connotations of loyalty and family reverence. The father–son relationship is a bond of blood, while the ruler–subjects relationship is a bond of duty and appropriateness, meaning that the ethical requirements for the father–son relationship and ruler–subjects relationship are fundamentally different. Therefore, expressions such as “service to ruler with family reverence is loyalty” does not mean to unify loyalty and family reverence, but means that the governor should select people who have already cultivated the virtue of family reverence to become officials because they have learnt how to show respect in their family life.

Abstract:The reliability of exegetical conclusion is determined by the efficient demonstration.Some scholars thought that "zhi qi zhang er yun" in the Analects of Confucius means rice cultivating,weeding and culture seedlings,which is not valid for the following reasons: they treated probability as necessity;at that time rice didn’t play a major role;"yun"(weeding) and "zi"(culture seedlings) were not endemic in cultivating."yun" meaning hand weeding in paddy field in Tian Gong Kai Wu can not be used to explain ancient document.Unearthed relics of Han dynasty displayed that there were weeding in the paddy field and weeding by using hoe,it doesn’t accord with linguistic reality asserting that "zhi" can not be taken as "zhi"(put down).Some scholars thought this "zhang" was "li zhang"(plough),which does not hold water because they treated speciality as generality.It is disguised replacement of concept to explain "zhang" as "li zhang".

Abstract:“Yi Zhun Hu Li of the Codes of Tang” is the typical summary about the characteristics of the Codes of Tang. As the result, the Codes of Tang became the example and symbol of the Confucianalized Chinese tradition. What should be paid attention to is that the “Li” taken as the standard of the Codes of Tang is Tang Li, i.e. the variation of Li which had been evolved from Qin and Han Dynasties. Such kind of Li and the value thereof, either called “Li Doctrine” or “Ming Doctrine”, constitutes the official legitimism of past dynasties. However, such kind of Li is substantially different from the Li advocated by Confucius. Therefore, the instant proposition and the propositions about the Chinese laws being Confucianalized must be treated dialectically with concrete analysis to make clear what is the true Confucianalization and what is the Confucianalization in form. Thus, we will not blame Confucian because of the brutality and rigor in laws.

Abstract:From the perspective of macro-politics, previous studies of Xunzi’s theory of Li 禮 (Rituals and Social Norms/Propriety/Rules of Proper Conduct) mainly concern the function and value of Li as a means of social control/governance that provides regulations and institutions ( Dianzhang Zhidu 典章制度). As a study of moral philosophy, this article adopts a micro-perspective to examine the individual agent [who practices Li ], and focuses on the dimension of individual self-cultivation through Li as discussed by Xunzi. This article argues that, based on the Confucian notion of moral community, even at the level of laws and institutions, the social stratification and social order established by Li also contain the value of “constructive morality.” The value foundation of Li lies not only in the propriety of external behavior but also in its performance of inner virtues. This article also points out that Li is a notion of virtue precisely because it is the realization and expression of Yi . In addition, Li -performance is the cultivation and nourishing of the agents’ emotions and ethics in which natural emotion is elevated into moral sentiment. In short, according to Xunzi, Li -performance is a fundamental process and means of individual moral self-cultivation.
