Abstract:Corythucha ciliata (Say), an invasive pest originating from North America, causes severe damage on sycamore trees. However, little is known about the population genetics and evolutionary forces underlying the invasiveness of this important pest. In the present study, we use three mitochondrial genes ( COI , ND1 and ND5 ) and nine microsatellite markers to investigate the population genetics of C. ciliata and retrace its spread through China. The results suggest a low level of genetic diversity in Chinese and European populations of C. ciliata . Our results indicate that populations of C. ciliata have obvious genetic structure, and genetic differentiation is not caused by geographic isolation. In median-joining networks, we observed a higher frequency of shared haplotypes in groups 1 and 3. Based on gene flow and approximate Bayesian computation analyses, we discovered that C. ciliata first invaded the east coast of China and subsequently moved inland. Demographic analysis suggested that populations of C. ciliata in China may have undergone a recent bottleneck effect. Finally, our results suggest that population structure, high gene flow and environmental conditions have favored the broad invasiveness of this important pest.

Abstract:Biological invasions are predicted to be more frequent as climate change is increasing its positive impact on the prevalence of invasive exotic species. Success of insect invaders in different temperature zones is closely related to their tolerance to temperature extremes. In this study, we used an exotic lace bug (Corythucha ciliata) as the study organism to address the hypotheses that an insect species invading a subtropical zone from temperate regions has a high capacity to survive and adapt to high temperatures, and that its thermal tolerance plays an important role in determining its seasonal abundance and geographic distribution. To test these hypotheses, the effects of heat shock on the survival and reproduction of C. ciliata adults were assessed in the laboratory. Adults were exposed to 26 (control), 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, and 45 degrees C for 2 h, and then were transferred to 26 degrees C. Heat-shock temperatures ranging from 35 to 41 degrees C did not significantly affect survival pattern, longevity, and fecundity of adults, but heat shock at 43 and 45 degrees C significantly reduced these traits. Exposing parent females to heat-shock treatments from 35 to 41 degrees C did not significantly affect the hatching rate of their eggs, survival of the nymphs, and the proportion of female F-1 progeny, while no progeny were produced with treatments of 43 and 45 degrees C. The results indicate that C. ciliata can tolerate high temperatures less than 41 degrees C, which may contribute to its expansion into the lower latitudes in China where its hosts (Platanus trees) are widely planted. Our findings have important implications for predicting seasonal abundance and understanding invasion mechanisms of this important urban invader under climate change.
A New Host Record and Cytological and Ultrastructural Characteristics of Coleosporium Asterum in China.

Abstract:Due to its strong competitiveness and lack of the natural enemies,goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) spreads rapidly in eastern China,especially in Shanghai,Zhejiang,Jiangsu and Anhui provinces,resulting in seriously ecological problems.The rust disease on goldenrod was observed in the suburbs of Ningbo,Zhejiang Province in May 2015.The leaves infected by the rust showed yellow spots with uredinia and massive urediniospores,causing leaf distortion,blighting and defoliation.On the basis of its morphological and molecular characteristics,the causal agent was identified as Coleosporiμm asterum.TEM observation showed that teliospore formation and germination as well as basidial development were a continuous process.A sorus contained simultaneously both teliospore and basidia being in different level of development.Our studies provide scientific data for further research of infective cycle and dissemination of the rust in China.

Abstract:Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is one of the most common pests impacting citrus orchards in southern China. Samples of D. citri were collected in southern China in order to systematically explore the genetic architecture of the species. Mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cytb) and cytochrome coxidase subunit I (COI) were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which allowed highlighting low haplotype and nucleotide diversities among the population. Two clades could be observed in the haplotype network. Moreover, Bayesian and maximum parsimony phylogenetic trees were constructed based on the sequences of Cytb and COI. Here, we report on the significant genetic variation of the species when comparing southwestern China with other regions of southern China (southern and southeastern). This analysis also suggested that the genetic structure of D. citri in China originates may from long-term climate fluctuations concomitant with recent disturbances resulting from human activity. Combined with previous data, the present work indicates that D. citri potentially entered China through two distinct invasion routes and spread within the country via three transmission paths.

Abstract:The population density of the sycamore lace bug Corythucha ciliata(Say) and damage level were investigated to evaluate the economic injury level(EIL) with the benefit/cost ratio of the Platanus.The regression equation of population density and damage index was fitted.The results indicated that there were five significant peaks in the occurrence of the eggs,nymphs and adults per year.The bugs were first found in the middle and last ten days of April and the peak period of population occurrence was from the last ten days of July to mid-September.The EIL was determined as 36.77%.There was significant correlation between population density and damage indices,fitting the Logistic regression model:Y=0.928 4/(1+e0.895 2-0.001 9x).The control threshold was 250 adults and nymphs per hundred leaves.Based on the management strategy of "early prevention and early control",the optimum control period is from mid-to end of April,when the density reaches the control threshold.

Abstract:Tuta absoluta（Meyrick） is a devastating invasive pest originating from South America. It has spread rapidly to Europe, Africa, and Asia, and has invaded China in recent years, and now is a highly potential threat to the solanaceous crop industry in China. Due to its characteristics of leaf mining, fruit burrowing, short life history, high reproductivity, etc., its control effect relying on chemical pesticides is limited. Many theoretical studies and application explorations have been carried out for developing the biological control strategies for Tuta absoluta in the world, and a lot of biological control agents with high potential for usage have been screened. In this review, we summarized the research progress on the global biological control of Tuta absoluta, focusing on the parasitic and predatory natural enemy insects, the bio-control microbes, and the repellent plants and their chemical extracts. In the green control of Tuta absoluta in China, in-depth studies could be carried out on the introduction of biocontrol species suitable for the agricultural niche in China, the digging of local biocontrol resources, and the industrialization of these biocontrol organisms; meanwhile, the integrative utilization of these organisms could be promoted via the combined use of them and the ecological regulation of the agricultural landscape, so as to ensure the high-quality development of Chinese solanaceous crop industry.
Occurrence of Entomopathogenic Fungi in Migratory Alate Aphids in Yunnan Province of China

Abstract:Occurrence of entomopathogenic fungi in migratory alate aphids was investigated by trapping air-borne aphids on cabbage and wheat plants and observing the insects for fungal infection. Potted cabbage and wheat plants put 30 m apart on yellow cloth, were placed on the top of a tall building (six-story building) in Yunnan Province, China away from cultivated fields or other vegetation. Seven species of aphids trapped on the plants collected and monitored for fungal infection in the laboratory at a daily basis from 19 February to 31 December, 2003. Aphids were trapped every day during the experimental period. A total of 3,681 aphids were trapped on cabbage and 3,028 on wheat. Myzus persicae (Sulzer), Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), and Sitobion avenae (F.) were the major aphid species accounting for 94.7 and 93.1% of the insect specimens landing on cabbage and wheat, respectively. Other aphis species encountered included, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach), Pemphigus sinobursaris Zhang, and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). Preference for host plant played significant role in attraction of aphids, especially of the three major species. Accumulated over the whole experimental period nearly 33% of the aphids landing on cabbage and 37% landing on wheat were infected with fungi. Erynia neoaphidis Remaudiere and Hennebert, Entomophthora planchoniana Cornu, and Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuilemin were the major fungal pathogens encountered and accounted for nearly 95% of the infested aphids on cabbage and 97% on wheat. Other entomopathogenic fungi encountered included Zoophthora radicans (Brefeld) Batko, Conidiobolus obscurus (Hall and Dunn) Remaudiere, and Neozygites fresenii (Nowakowski), Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Wize) Brown and Smith, and Aspergillus flavus Link. Although the number of aphids trapped throughout the experimental period did not vary consistently with temperature or humidity, the fungal was directly related to relative humidity. Higher insect mortality, especially due to Entomophthorales, positively related relative humidity.

Abstract:An important invasive insect pest,locust gall midge Obolodiplosis robiniae(Haldemann)(Diptera:Cecidomyiidae),was newly discovered from China.Native to North America,this species attacks leaf of black locust tree,Robinia pseudoacacia L.As one characteristic of infestation,its larvae(usually 3-8 individuals)gregariously feed inside the longitudinal rolling gall along the edges of leaf.In Qinhuangdao City of Hebei Province and Jinzhou,Anshan,Huludao and Chaoyang cities of Liaoning Province,its attacking rate on black locust trees were about 100%.The pest threats the health of R.pseudoacacia which has been planted in large areas in China.Strict quarantine,study on its biology and control measures are necessary in order to block its spread and damages.

In the present paper, the encouraging progress and achievements worldwide in research and application of the fungus during the past decade were reviewed on aspects of host range, biology, secondary metabolites, genetic variability, natural occurrence, virulence, and formulation. The experience with the use of P.fumosoroseus for whitefly control in western countries could facilitate the utilization of the fungus as microbial control agent in China.

Abstract:The longicorn beetle Monochamus saltuarius (Coleoptera; Cerambycidae) is an insect vector that transmits the pine wood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, a serious issue in pine forests in China, Japan, and South Korea. Dastarcus helophoroides and Scleroderma guani are effective in controlling M. saltuarius. However, the application of these parasites for the direct control of vector insects requires detailed analyses of the suitability of the selected natural enemies in potential pest areas, particularly under climate change. Based on species distribution records as well as the current and projected climate change trends up to 2050, we utilized an optimized Maxent algorithm to predict the potential distribution patterns of M. saltuarius and its natural enemies in China. Furthermore, we estimated Schoener's D to quantify the overlap in adaptability between M. saltuarius and its natural enemies. The potentially suitable areas predicted under the current climate conditions were concentrated mainly in northeast and north China. Additional suitable areas were detected in central, eastern, northwestern, and southwestern China. Under future climate conditions, the suitable range of M. saltuarius gradually shifted southward, with a tendency to expand into high-altitude and colder regions, such as Sichuan, Qinghai, and Tibet. The potential distribution of the natural enemies D. helophoroides and S. guani continued to expand under climate change. A comparison of the appropriate habitats of M. saltuarius and natural enemy insects indicated that D. helophoroides is more suitable for initial biological control in north, northeast, and central China as well as certain northwest and coastal regions. S. guani could be prioritized for nationwide release, while joint control using both species may be effective in Liaoning, Hebei, and Tianjin provinces. These analyses demonstrate that future climate change is likely to exert adverse effects on the potential distribution of M. saltuarius but is favorable for the potential distributions of natural enemies. This study offers important insights into the effective control of M. saltuarius and provides an experimental basis for the utilization of natural enemies according to the characteristics of different regions.

Effects of Temperature on the Development and Population Growth of the Sycamore Lace Bug, Corythucha Ciliata.

Abstract:The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata (Say) (Hemiptera: Tingidae), is an important invasive exotic pest of Platanus (Proteales: Platanaceae) trees in China. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of temperature on C. ciliata in the laboratory so that forecasting models based on heat accumulation units could be developed for the pest. Development and fecundity of C. ciliata reared on leaves of London plane tree (Platanus × acerifolia) were investigated at seven constant temperatures (16, 19, 22, 26, 30, 33, and 36° C) and at a relative humidity of 80% with a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D). The developmental time was found to significantly decrease with increasing temperature. The developmental time from egg hatching to adult emergence was respectively 47.6, 35.0, 24.1, 20.0, and 17.1 days at the temperatures of 19, 22, 26, 30, and 33° C. C. ciliata could not complete full development at 16° and 36° C. The developmental threshold temperature (C) estimated for egg-to-adult was 11.17° C, with a thermal constant of (K) 370.57 degree-days. Longevity of females was found to be the shortest, 17.7 days at 33° C and the longest, 58.9 days at 16° C, and that of males was the shortest, 19.7 days at 33° C and the longest, 59.7 days at 16° C. Fecundity was the highest at 30° C, being 286.8 eggs per female over an oviposition period of 8.9 days. Female lifetime fecundity was reduced at other temperatures, being the lowest (87.7 eggs per female) at 19° C. The population trend index (I) of C. ciliata was the highest (130.1) at 30° C and the lowest (24.9) at 19° C. Therefore, the optimal developmental temperature for C. ciliata was determined to be 30° C.
A decade of leafminer invasion in China: lessons learned

Abstract:Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) is a highly invasive species that has become established in agricultural and ornamental crops throughout the world. L. trifolii was first recorded in China in 2005 in Guangdong Province. Subsequently, its known distribution in China has rapidly expanded to another 11 provinces (Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Fujian, Guangxi, Shandong, Hainan, Hebei, Henan, Hubei and Anhui), where it is currently causing considerable damage and economic losses. Experimental research and field surveys have contributed to our understanding of the ecology of L. trifolii and particularly the process of invasion and its interactions with other established, exotic Liriomyza leafminer species. A number of factors have contributed to the successful establishment of L. trifolii and displacement of interspecific competitors. In China, L. trifolii has become a particularly devastating pest in areas with intensive farming with extensive monocultures and a reliance on insecticide use. Integrated pest management incorporating judicious applications of insecticide combined with biological and cultural controls is likely to provide the best long-term management strategy for L. trifolii. We provide information regarding 10 years of L. trifolii invasion in China and discuss areas of future research to enhance our overall understanding of the biology and ecology of L. trifolii and to improve management programmes for this widespread invasive insect pest. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.
An Extensive Field Survey Combined with a Phylogenetic Analysis Reveals Rapid and Widespread Invasion of Two Alien Whiteflies in China.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:To understand the processes of invasions by alien insects is a pre-requisite for improving management. The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is a cryptic species complex that contains some of the most invasive pests worldwide. However, extensive field data to show the geographic distribution of the members of this species complex as well as the invasion by some of its members are scarce.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We used field surveys and published data to assess the current diversity and distribution of B. tabaci cryptic species in China and relate the indigenous members to other Asian and Australian members of the complex. The survey covered the 16 provinces where indigenous B. tabaci occur and extends this with published data for the whole of China. We used molecular markers to identify cryptic species. The evolutionary relationships between the different Asian B. tabaci were reconstructed using Bayesian methods. We show that whereas in the past the exotic invader Middle East-Asia Minor 1 was predominant across China, another newer invader Mediterranean is now the dominant species in the Yangtze River Valley and eastern coastal areas, and Middle East-Asia Minor 1 is now predominant only in the south and south eastern coastal areas. Based on mtCO1 we identified four new cryptic species, and in total we have recorded 13 indigenous and two invasive species from China. Diversity was highest in the southern and southeastern provinces and declined to north and west. Only the two invasive species were found in the northern part of the country where they occur primarily in protected cropping. By 2009, indigenous species were mainly found in remote mountainous areas and were mostly absent from extensive agricultural areas.CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:Invasions by some members of the whitefly B. tabaci species complex can be rapid and widespread, and indigenous species closely related to the invaders are replaced.
Surveillance and invasive risk of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren in China.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren is one of the world's most successful and destructive invasive ant species. In mainland China, fast, monthly, and annual pest reports have been established since 2010. The distribution of S. invicta under climate change in China was predicted using MaxEnt modeling in combination with comprehensive surveillance data and 56 environmental factors. RESULTS Fast and monthly reports revealed that S. invicta had spread to new territories almost every year. The transportation of seedlings and deployment of turfgrass were the major artificial transmission pathways. Annual reports indicated that control efforts had effectively reduced its occurrence areas and severity degree and retrieved the economic loss caused by S. invicta. The MaxEnt model predicted that S. invicta would expand to 23 provinces in China under climate change. The moisture variables were the key factors affecting the distribution of this pest. CONCLUSION Based on the theoretical reference framework of this research, China proposed the first-ever integrated tactics against a single pest jointly by nine ministries, which include clarifying responsibilities, cutting off transmission pathways, strengthening surveillance, declaring pest distributions, and holding control operations. Practical efforts and measures combating the devastating S. invicta may shed light on its management and other invasive species worldwide. This article is protected by copyright. Global Invasion History and Genomic Signatures of Adaptation of the Highly Invasive Sycamore Lace Bug

Abstract:Invasive species cause massive economic and ecological damage. Climate change has resulted in an unprecedented increase in the number and impact of invasive species; however, the mechanisms underlying these invasions are unclear. The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata, is a highly invasive species originating from North America and has expanded across the Northern Hemisphere since the 1960s. In this study, we assembled the C. ciliata genome using high-coverage Pacific Biosciences (PacBio), Illumina, and high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) sequencing. A total of 15,278 protein-coding genes were identified, and expansions of gene families with oxidoreductase and metabolic activities were observed. In-depth resequencing of 402 samples from native and nine invaded countries across three continents revealed 2.74 million single nucleotide polymorphisms. Two major invasion routes of C. ciliata were identified from North America to Europe and Japan, with a contact zone forming in East Asia. Genomic signatures of selection associated with invasion and long-term balancing selection in native ranges were identified. These genomic signatures overlapped with expanded genes, suggesting improvements in the oxidative stress and thermal tolerance of C. ciliata. These findings offer valuable insights into the genomic architecture and adaptive evolution underlying the invasive capabilities of species during rapid environmental changes.

Abstract:AbstractThe plant bug,Nesidiocoris tenuis(Hemiptera: Miridae), is one of the most thermophilous dicyphines in agroecosystems and is widely distributed in China. Little is known regarding the genetic structure ofN. tenuisand the effect of historical climatic fluctuations onN. tenuispopulations. We analyzed partial sequences of three mitochondrial protein-coding genes (COI, ND2andCytB) and nuclear genes (5.8S, ITS2 and28S) for 516 specimens collected from 37 localities across China. Analyses of the combined mitochondrial dataset indicated that the Southwestern China group (SWC) was significantly differentiated from the remaining populations, other Chinese group (OC). Asymmetric migration and high level of gene flow across a long distance within the OC group was detected. The long-distance dispersal ofN. tenuismight be affected by air currents and human interference. Both the neutrality tests and mismatch distributions revealed the occurrence of historical population expansion. Bayesian skyline plot analyses with two different substitution rates indicated thatN. tenuismight follow the post-LGM (the Last Glacial Maximum) expansion pattern for temperate species. Pleistocene climatic fluctuation, complicated topography and anthropogenic factors, along with other ecological factors (e.g. temperature and air current) might have accounted for the current population structure ofN. tenuis.

In order to monitor and control it effectively, it is necessary to know the potential geographical distribution of this pest. The ER (Eclosion rate) model was constructed from empirical biological data, and analyzed with ArcGIS. Based on the soil temperature and moisture data of Chinese meteorological stations, the potential geographical distribution of B. cucurbitae from January to December in China was predicted. Six categories were used to describe different levels of suitability for B. cucurbitae in China. The potential geographical distribution and suitable levels for every month in China were obtained and showed that almost all locations were suitable from May to September. Further analysis showed that monitoring measures should be taken in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Hainan provinces throughout the year. © 2013 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.
Prediction of Suitable Distributions of Red Palm Weevil Rhyncophorus ferrugineuss Fabriciu (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in China with Analysis of Bio-Climatic Matching

Abstract:【Objective】It is urgent to study on potential distribution area of the red palm weevil, Rhyncophorus ferrugineuss Fabriciu, because it is an important invasive and quarantine pest in China. 【Method】The pivotal bio-climatic matching value of R. ferrugineuss output from CLIMEX model was interpolated into GIS analysis. After overlay analysis of matching value map and host map, the prediction distribution of the pest was improved. 【Result】The results indicated that R. ferrugineuss can widely distribute in south area from Qinling Mountain and the high risk areas include Guangxi, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hainan, Taiwan and Hongkong, etc.. 【Conclusion】Analysis of bio-climatic matching provides an applied way for potential distribution area of R. ferrugineuss in China, and the results adapted to the actual distribution. South China, East China and West-south China are the crucial quarantine and control areas.
Potential Range Expansion and Niche Shift of the Invasive Hyphantria Cunea Between Native and Invasive Countries

Abstract:1. Hyphantria cunea is a problematic invasive species that has caused considerable damage to agricultural and forestry ecosystems in China.2. We compared 19 bioclimate variables between its native country (the United States of America) and China to elucidate the environmental factors associated with its presence. Using present climate data (1970–2000) and projected future climate data (2050 and 2070) based on two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs 2.6 and 8.5), we used MaxEnt to predict the suitable habitat areas for H. cunea in the USA and China. Using these analyses, we predicted the niche change of H. cunea in China using the ‘ecospat’ package in R.3. Our model predicts that climate change will generally increase the extent of suitable habitat in both China and the USA, although low latitude areas will be limited by future climate change. We also report low niche overlap between the USA and Chinese populations of H. cuena and significant differences in bioclimate variables associate with its presence in each country. Therefore, our results suggest H. cunea has adapted to several climatic conditions in China. This indicates the niche of H. cunea may shift and adapt to novel environmental conditions over the course of its spread.4. Overall, the analysis of the environmental characteristics, niche changes, and suitable areas of H. cunea provides a basis for pest control and management strategies aimed at preventing further spread. Our methods may also be used to study other similar invasive species.
