Abstract:Dynamic oscillating behavior of the flexible structure immerged in viscous fluids has attracted growing attention and been widely used in various practical applications. A general electricity-structure-fluid coupled model for the forced dynamic responses of a cantilever immersed in fluids, with partially distributed macro fiber composite, is proposed in this paper. Based on the classical Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, the first mass-normalized mode shape of the cantilever with partially bonded macro fiber composite is determined using assumed mode method. The attachment of the macro fiber composite actuators stiffens the macro fiber composite-bonded portion of the cantilever. The established mode shape matches perfectly with experimental results. Considering the macro fiber composite actuator as a set of representative elements connected in parallel, the internally actuation moment provided by the macro fiber composite actuators is obtained. The hydrodynamic load caused by the surrounding fluids, decomposed into the added mass and hydrodynamic damping parts, is also added to the theoretical model in the frequency-domain form. The predicted in-air and underwater dynamic behaviors of the flexible beam are consistent with the experimental results at different auction levels. Thus, the obtained general electricity-structure-fluid coupled model can be used to predict the forced dynamic responses of flexible structure with partially bonded actuators immersed in fluids.

Abstract:The simulation of interaction between flow and the elastic structure is a complicated fluid-solid interaction problem, involving the structure's large deformation and fluid interface variation. In this paper, an adaptive CIP (constrained interpolation profile)-based numerical model has been presented to simulate this problem. In this CIP-based model, the constrained interpolation profile method, a high-order finite difference method, is employed as the base flow solver and THINC/SW (Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing with Slope Weighting) method, a volume of fluid method, is applied to capture the flow interface. IBM (immersed boundary method) method is used to treat the fluid-solid interface. The body deformation is calculated by coupled FDM-FEM (finite difference method and finite element method) method. Adaptive mesh is generated by Afivo (Adaptive Finite Volume quadtree/Octree mesh) framework. The cases of flow past a square and water entry of a symmetric solid wedge are carried out to validate the reliability of the flow solver in this present model. Cantilever beam deformation case is used to validate the accuracy of the solid solver in the present model. Then cases of a thin elastic beam in sloshing tank and dam-break flow are carried out by using this model. After that, the case of regular wave past a membrane breakwater is studied. Our numerical results are compared with previous experimental and numerical studies, and good agreements are obtained. It is demonstrated that this present numerical model has good applicability to simulate the interaction between flow and a thin elastic beam.
Multi-physics Analysis of an Electrostatically Actuated Microcantilever in Viscous Fluids

Abstract:The dymamical behavior of MEMS devices is strongly affected by viscous fluid damping effects from the surrounding. These damping effects have to be carefully considered for the design and optimization. For predicting the hydrodynamic loading of an electrostatical device in viscous fluids, it is necessary to build an electrostatic-mechanical-fluidic coupled model, where the flows characteristics were described by Navier-Stokes equations. Comprehensive analyses of the static/dynamic closing behaviors of the microswitch in viscous fluids were performed. Compared with published work of other researchers available in the literature, the numerical model was validated. After that, the static/dynamic closing voltages of the microswitch in the air and deionized water were calculated. The transient behaviors of microswitch under different action voltages were also simulated, including the squeeze-film damping pressure distribution as well. The results show that the difference between the static and the dynamic pull-in voltage in the deionized water is smaller than that in air.
Size-Dependent Free Vibration of Microbeams Submerged in Fluid

Abstract:The size-dependent free vibration of microbeams submerged in fluid is presented in this paper based on the modified couple stress theory. Two different cross-section shapes of microbeams are considered, i.e. the circular cross-section and rectangular cross-section. This nonclassical microbeam model is introduced for capturing the size effect of microstructures. In this fluid and structure coupled system, the effect of hydrodynamic loading on microbeams can be expressed by the added mass method. By using Hamilton’s principle and differential quadrature (DQ) method, we can derive governing equations of microbeams in fluid, and then rewrite them in the discretized form. The frequencies and mode shapes for microbeams are determined by proposing an iterative method. Numerical examples are given to show the effect of fluid depth, fluid density, length scale parameter, slenderness ratio, boundary condition and cross-section shape on the vibration characteristics.

Abstract:This study proposes an CIP (Constraint Interpolation Profile) viscous flow model that couples the Finite Element Method for structural deformation, to investigate the wave interaction with a fluid-filled membrane submerged breakwater. A modified ghost-cell immersed boundary method is adopted to achieve an accurate simulation of the fluid-structure interaction. After validation by published experimental data, the model is used to study the interaction between regular waves and a fluid-filled membrane submerged breakwater. The excess internal pressure, vorticity field, elastic modulus and structural responses are analyzed. The results show that, in lower excess internal pressure, the wave reflection, vortex shedding and energy dissipation are more significant. Be-sides, through the analysis of displacement and velocity distribution, three different vibration modes of the membrane structure are identified at different wave frequencies.

Abstract:In this paper, an underwater vibration model is developed to depict the dynamic characteristic of V-shaped beams for both small and finite amplitude vibrations by considering the fluid–structure interactions between the complicated geometry and viscous fluids. The gap to width ratio in beam’s cross-section is introduced to describe the geometry of the V-shaped beam. For small amplitude vibrations, a complex hydrodynamic function in terms of the gap to width ratio and the frequency parameter is presented to characterize the fluid–structure interactions according to the 2-D fluid dynamics simulations. Besides, a 3-D numerical simulation is performed to verify the proposed computational approach and hydrodynamic function in the 2-D analysis. As the vibration amplitude increases, the 2-D fluid dynamics simulations are further conducted to investigate the effects of amplitude parameter on the flow physics. Therefore, a revised hydrodynamic function governed by the interplay of the frequency parameter, the gap to width ratio and the amplitude parameter is presented to model the hydrodynamic force for finite vibration amplitude accounting for nonlinear damping effects. Moreover, the experimental verifications on both small and finite amplitude vibrations of several V-shaped beams with different geometrical sizes are carried out. It illustrates that the presented model is capable of capturing the nonlinear damping phenomenon occurred at finite oscillation amplitudes and is generally able to predict the underwater vibrations of V-shaped beams with both small and finite amplitude.

Abstract:Material length scale considerably affects the mechanical properties of microcantilever components. Recently, cantilever-plate-like structures have been commonly used, whereas the lack of studies on their size effects constrains the design, testing, and application of these structures. We have studied the size-dependent dynamic behavior of a cantilever plate based on a modified couple stress theory and the differential quadrature method in this note. The numerical solutions of microcantilever plate equation involving the size effect have been presented. We have also analyzed the bending and vibration of the microcantilever plates considering the size effect and discussed the dependence of the size effect on their geometric dimensions. The results have shown that (1) the mechanical characteristics of the cantilever plate show obvious size effects; as a result, the bending deflection of a microcantilever plate reduces whereas the natural frequency increases effectively and (2) for the plates with the same material, the size effect becomes more obvious when the plates are thinner.

Abstract:V-shaped beams have been widely used in atomic force microscope(AFM)and micro-nano mechanical sensing applica-tions.The structure is usually used for sophisticated detection,sensing and performance characterization in viscous fluids,thus making it complex to study the vibration characteristics of the structure by considering the fluid-structure interaction between the complicated geometry and viscous fluids.It is of fundamental importance to investigate the vibration characteristics of V-shaped beams submerged in viscous fluids owing to the fact that the vibration characteristics will directly affect the dynamic properties of the applications.In this paper,an underwater vibration model is developed to depict the dynamic characteristics of V-shaped beams immersed in viscous fluids by taking into account the fact that the cross-section and bending stiffness of the V-shaped beam are variable along the beam axis.A complex hydrodynamic function in terms of the gap to width ratio and the frequency parameter is developed to describe the hydrodynamic loading where the complex hydrodynamic function is derived from the modified hydrodynamic function based on the gap to width ratio in beam's cross-section.Besides,the frequency response of V-shaped beams vibrating in viscous fluids is obtained theoretically.Moreover,the experimental verifications on flexural vibrations of several V-shaped beams with different geometrical sizes are carried out.It demonstrates that the experimental data is in good agreement with the theoretical results,thus validating the modified expression of hydrodynamic function and the underwater dynamic model.Besides,the effect of different fluid viscosities,an-gles of V-shaped beams and the scale of the geometry on the vibration characteristics of the coupling system is analyzed based on the proposed fluid-structure interaction model.

Abstract:In this paper, the flexural vibration of the V-shaped beam with varying section and bending stiffness submerged in a quiescent viscous fluid is studied. Fluid-structure interactions are modelled through a complex hydrodynamic function that describes added mass and damping effects. A parametric study is conducted on the two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics of an oscillating V-shaped beam under harmonic base excitation to establish a handleable formula for the hydrodynamic function, which is in terms of the frequency parameter and the ratio between the gap of the beam cross-section and the width of the beam. The real part and imaginary parts of hydrodynamic function decrease with both the frequency parameter and the ratio. The frequency response of the V-shaped beam is obtained by solving the model numerically. Findings from this work can be used in the design of V-shaped structures of interest in marine applications such as the energy harvesting devices and micromechanical oscillators for sensing and actuation.

Abstract:Purpose In this paper, the transverse vibrations of an axially moving cantilever beam subject to a continuously distributed moving mass are studied numerically. Methods An elastic coupling coefficient is introduced to describe the actual elastic coupling effect between the beam and moving mass. The motion equations of the system are derived by Lagrange's equation and Galerkin method. The Newmarkbeta direct time integrating method is adopted to analyze the dynamic responses. Results and Conclusion The motion equations are verified by comparing the dynamic responses with previous literature. An interesting energy separation phenomenon is observed when the moving mass separates from the beam. The effects of moving mass parameters (moving mass velocity, length, and elastic coupling coefficient) on beam dynamics and the energy separation phenomenon are discussed. It has been observed that the elastic coupling effect between the beam and moving mass has a significant effect on beam dynamics.

Abstract:Vibrating micro-/nanosized cantilever beams under an applied axial force are the key components of various devices used in nanotechnology. In this study, we perform a complete theoretical investigation of the cantilever beams under an arbitrary value of the axial force vibrating in a specific environment such as vacuum, air or viscous fluid. Based on the results easy accessible expressions enabling one the fast and highly accurate estimations of changes in the Q-factor and resonant frequencies of beam oscillating in viscous fluid caused by the applied axial force are derived and analyzed. It has been also shown that for beam-to-string and string vibrational regimes the mode shape starts to significantly deviate from the one known for a beam without axial force. Moreover, a linear dependency of the vibrational amplitude in resonance on the dimensionless tension parameter has been found. We revealed that only a large axial force, i.e. the string vibrational regime, significantly improves the Q-factor of beams submerged in fluid, while an increase of the axial force in beam and beam-to-string transition regimes has a negligibly small impact on the Q-factor enhancement. Experiments carried out on the carbon nanotubes and nanowires are in a good agreement with present theoretical predictions.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the size-dependent vibration and dynamic stability for axially functionally graded (AFG) microbeams immersed in fluid. We consider rectangular and circular cross-section shapes of AFG microbeams. The modified couple stress theory (MCST) is employed to characterize the size dependency of microbeams. The Mori-Tanaka method provides the formulations of material properties with axially continuous gradual variation. The fluid effect on the microbeam is simulated as the added mass. According to the variational principle, we can obtain the governing equations and the boundary conditions of the free vibration and dynamic stability problems. The natural frequency and critical excitation frequency are solved by the differential quadrature (DQ) method and iterative method. Numerical examples present the response of the natural frequency, critical buckling load and critical excitation frequency on the fluid depth, size parameter, fluid density and cross-section shape.

Abstract:We derive a mathematical model and the corresponding computational scheme to study deflection of a two-dimensional elastic cantilever beam immersed in a channel, where one end of the beam is fixed to the channel wall. The immersed boundary method has been employed to simulate numerically the fluid-structure interaction problem. We investigate how variations in physical and numerical parameters change the effective material properties of the elastic beam and compare the results qualitatively with linear beam theory. We also pay careful attention to "corner effects" -- irregularities in beam shape near the free and fixed ends -- and show how this can be remedied by smoothing out the corners with a "fillet" or rounded shape. Finally, we extend the immersed boundary formulation to include porosity in the beam and investigate the effect that the resultant porous flow has on beam deflection.

Abstract:We discuss the Brownian thermal noise which affects the cantilever dynamics of a dAFM (dynamic atomic force microscope), both when it works in air and in presence of water. Our scope is to accurately describe the cantilever dynamics, and to get this result we deeply investigate the relationship between the cantilever thermal fluctuations and its interactions with the surrounding liquid. We present a relatively simple and very easy-to-use analytical model to describe the interaction forces between the liquid and the cantilever. The novelty of this approach is that, under the assumption of small cantilever oscillations, by using the superposition principle we found a very simple integral expression to describe fluid-cantilever interactions. More specifically we note that, beside including fluid inertia and viscosity (which is common to many existing models in the literature) an additional diffisivity term needs to be considered, whose crucial influence for the correct evaluation of the cantilever response to the thermal excitation is shown in the present paper. The coefficients of our model are obtained by using numerical results for a 2D fluid flow around a vibrating rectangular cross-section, and depend on the distance from the wall. This allowed us to completely characterize the dynamics of a dAFM cantilever also when it operates in tilted conditions. We validate the analytical model by comparing our results with numerical and experimental dAFM data previously presented in literature, and with experiments carried out by ourselves. We show that we can provide extremely accurate prediction of the beam response up and beyond the second resonant peak.

Dynamic Behavior of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Conveying Viscous Fluid Based on Nonlocal Elastic Theory

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a fixed-fixed double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) conveying fluid is studied based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The viscosity of the fluid and the nonlocal effect are incorporated in the formulation, and the Galerkin discretization method is used to solve the coupled equations of motions. The critical flow velocity of the fluid is obtained. Numerical simulations show that the van der Waals (vdW) interactions and the internal moving fluid play significant roles in the natural frequencies and the instability of DWCNTs. Also, the influences of the viscosity, nonlocal effect, aspect ratio and the surrounding elastic medium on the dynamic behavior of the double-walled carbon nanotube is studied in detail. It is found that a higher viscous-fluid-conveying DWCNT embedded in a stiff matrix with a larger aspect ratio make the induced instability vibration occur until a higher flow velocity.

Abstract:The nonlinear vibration of cantilever nickel microbeams with thickness in micron level is investigated through experiment and theory. A non-contact dynamic vibration measurement system is built to test the fundamental linear frequency and the nonlinear amplitude-frequency curves near the primary resonance. Experimental result reveals the nonlinear amplitude-frequency curves exhibit a marked weak softening-type behavior as well as hysteresis behavior. To elucidate the experimental observations, a modified couple stress-based Euler-Bernoulli beam model incorporating geometric and inertial nonlinearities is established. The derived partial differential equation of motion is converted into a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by employing the Galerkin method. And then, the multi-dimensional Lindstedt-Poincaré (L-P) method is applied to solve these ODEs. By comparing these analytical and experimental results, a good agreement is observed. Besides, a p-version Ritz method is combined with the iteration algorithm to reveal the close similarity of the beam and plate models and to further demonstrate the size-dependency in the nonlinear regime. Meanwhile the size-dependency in nonlinear regime is demonstrated. The effects of different order nonlinear terms, length scale parameter and damping coefficients on the system are investigated. It is illustrated that the period-doubling bifurcation occurs when imposing sufficiently large excitations, and it turns into chaos with increasing the excitations continuously.
The dynamics of an externally driven nanoscale beam that is under high tension and immersed in a viscous fluid

Abstract:We explore the dynamics of a nanoscale doubly-clamped beam that is under high tension, immersed in a viscous fluid, and driven externally by a spatially varying drive force. We develop a theoretical description that is valid for all possible values of tension, includes the motion of the higher modes of the beam, and accounts for a harmonic force that is applied over a limited spatial region of the beam near its ends. We compare our theoretical predictions with experimental measurements for a nanoscale beam that is driven electrothermally and immersed in air and water. The theoretical predictions show good agreement with experiment and the validity of a simplified string approximation is demonstrated.

Abstract:Using the method of macro simulating micro, dynamics of a micro-cantilever in the ambient condition was analyzed. First, the micro-cantilever's vibrating-phase was plotted and then its dynamics model was established. The phase of the micro-cantilever's contact on the basis surface was studied by JKR theory. A conclusion was drawn that the dynamics analysis of the cantilever should be focused on the phase having liquid-bridge force. Neck-shrink of the surface materials was also found during the vibration. Finally, an example was given.

Abstract:The interaction problem of an elastic structure and an incompressible viscous fluid is solved through a computational procedure proposed in this paper. The fluid region is considered to be bounded though without free surface boundary. The discrete fluid domain is described by the streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin finite element method. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian description is employed to treat the moving interface between the structure and the fluid. The predictor-multicorrector method is adopted to solve the coupling finite element equations. The results of three numerical examples show the effectiveness of the procedure.
